7 years. 7 long years had passed, so much pain had been caused by the disappearance of her friends, since he had disappeared. She hadn't had a chance to speak with him after he'd been exiled from the guild, and unfortunately, the last words they'd exchanged had been words of anger. It had started out as a small argument, but in just a few minutes it had grown into something much bigger.
Ever since that day, (y/n) had been replaying her own words over and over in her mind. She told herself that she could have understood his point of view better, that she shouldn't have been so mean or defensive, that she could have asked him to talk, to sit down, or at least to separate for a few minutes until he calmed down. (Y/n) now had to carry the guilt on her shoulders, now that he was gone, she would never have the chance to make amends.
She had needed to get as far away from the guild as possible, everything reminded her of Laxus, his place at the bar, the table where he usually sat with the Thunder God Tribe, or even just her house. His scent was still in the sheets, his clothes were still in the wardrobe. She'd never found the courage to take them off, she didn't want to lose him again. (Y/n) still had a small part of hope inside her that he wasn't dead after all, that he'd turn up on her doorstep and everything would go back to the way it was before. But she knew it was a lost cause, something she dreamt about every night.
And then one fine morning, Lamia Scale was there, saying that at last there might still be some realistic hope. The energy at the island hadn't completely disappeared, and was slowly building up again after all these years. (Y/n) had simply let her gaze wander to the horizon, but what if it wasn't true? Perhaps the magic really was returning to this place, but without giving their friends a chance of survival. The young woman had refused to go on an adventure with the others, but she could see that some of them were terribly happy, especially the members of Shadow Gear. She had no right to let her feelings get the better of her too, she had to keep a cold head, keep her hopes deep in her heart, and above all, not let anyone see it.
"-You can go home, it's possible they'll be back tomorrow, there's no real point in spending the night here. When they're back, don't worry, you'll know." Macao said softly, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"-I...I don't even know why I'm still here. Every time they leave, we end up disappointed... If you only knew how much I want it to be the right one, for them to suddenly walk through the door, for Gray to strip, for Natsu to start fighting him, for Erza to try and separate them so that her cake gets destroyed, and for her to finally join in the fight too. And Laxus... Even if he came back, could he come back to the guild? Would he want to talk to me..." She looked at the guild leader, before shaking her head. "-I'm just at my breaking point sometimes."
"-Go get some rest, you're back from a mission. But we're here, we can support you, okay? Whether it's tomorrow, or even for years, we're with you. One day we'll understand, one day I'm sure we'll find them." He nodded to her towards the door. "-I'll walk you out, Romeo's still outside, you know how he's been since..."
"-He lost Natsu, we all know how much he admires him. He's like me on this one, too much hope ends up hurting, he's protecting himself."
Macao and (y/n) left the guild, walking through the streets of Magnolia. The young woman looked around, trying to find Romeo, it was a way for her not to think about what was going to happen in the next few hours at least. Once at Magnolia South Park, (y/n) noticed Romeo sitting against the tree, looking around. He too didn't want to get his hopes up. Telling Macao that she could finish on her own, she left him to go and talk to his son.
The young woman arrived home a few minutes later, and sat down on her sofa, looking in front of her, where on the small table was a drawing of the Thunder God Tribe, a gift from Reader.
The only thing she could do now was wait, and above all, hope to see her lifelong love alive again.
⋆.ೃ࿔⛈ ݁ ˖*༄
Hours had passed without any real news. (y/n) finally got up and stood in front of the window, trying to see someone from the guild approaching. But no one came. When there was a sudden knock on the door, she frowned, wondering who it could be, and went straight to open it.
Behind her was Bisca, a slight smile on her face. It was surprising, since she hadn't seen her coming from the guild, perhaps she came here from the boat?
"-I figured you'd be here." She smiled at him, "-Come on, let's get back to the guild."
"-If you're here it's to say something, no need to leave to do so."
"-I'm not saying anything until we get back to the guild. Take your jacket or don't, but I'm not waiting for you."
The woman leaves her house, letting (y/n) stand here for a few seconds, wondering what she should do. She knew that she would be disappointed at the end, that they didn’t find anyone. But… what if ? What if he has come back ? Having finally made her decision, she left her house, barely taking the time to lock her front door. Bisca hadn't waited for her, and had already started on her way to the guild. (Y/n) had to run to catch up with her, coming to her side without saying a word.
A lump of anxiety had filled her stomach, and she could feel it growing as they walked.
After a few minutes, she stopped, hearing much more noise than usual coming from the guild. (Y/n) looked at Bisca, as if to ask if she was dreaming. So much noise could only mean one thing. A Fairy Tail party. A celebration. And so, the return of their companions, their friends, their family. The woman smiled gently at her, nodding. That was enough for (y/n) to start running, her heart beating so fast she could hear it in her ears. She didn't waste a second opening the door of the guild, discovering all those they had lost 7 years ago, all those they had mourned, cried.
And suddenly, in front of his eyes, was Natsu ruffling Romeo's hair, like a big brother would. Macao with Mirajane and Makarov chatting at the bar, probably making up for lost time. Erza with a slice of strawberry cake, while being with Alzack. Levy surrounded by Jet and Droy, crying non-stop as she tries to reassure them. Gildarts and Cana were at a table, a beer in front of each of them. Lisanna, Elfman, Lucy, Wendy, Gray, Juvia, Gajeel... Everyone was finally back.
She entered the room, attracting stares from her friends, but each of them said nothing - they knew who she was looking for. She too had the right to find him without being interrupted. Her gaze fell on his blond hair, and her eyes softened as tears quickly filled her eyes. Laxus turned around after Fried nudged him lightly, pointing to the young woman with a shake of his head.
Laxus rose from the bar, his gaze meeting the eyes of the woman he loved, the woman who had never really left his thoughts, the woman he had thought of directly when he woke up on this island. He was the first to move forward, realising that she must still be in a state of shock.
When he reached her level, he looked her up and down, realising that he had not kept his promise to always be there for her. For years she had been alone, she had suffered, she had probably had to fight. And he had simply disappeared from the face of the earth thanks to the Fairy Sphere. It was their only means of survival, and yet he blamed himself. Of course, Acnologia's arrival was not his fault, or that of anyone else in the guild, but he regretted his past actions. He'd been so blinded by it that he'd forgotten that behind it all, once the doors were closed, there was someone who loved him.
His hand rose to rest tenderly on her cheek, never taking his eyes off her for a second. He was trying to communicate his endless love for her, words had never really been his forte, but at this moment, he promised himself he would make an effort. She deserved it, she deserved all the happiness in the world, and Laxus wanted to be part of her happiness, he wanted to make her smile every morning when he kissed her, when he told her he loved her.
“-Laxus…” She whispers in a trembling voice.
“-I’m here now my love, I will never leave you again. I swear.” He stroked her cheek with his thumb, smiling. “-I’m sorry for everything that happened in the past, I will make up to you, we will be happy if you still want us to be together.”
“-Of course I want us, I never even thought about leaving you. Now that you are here again, you are stuck with me.” She let out a small laugh, although you could hear the emotion in her voice.
The blond smiled at her tenderly, placing a soft kiss on the top of her head, holding her against him as a few tears escaped from her eyes. The guild members around them looked on in delight. Makarov, the master, well, the former master, was happy to see his grandson reunited with the woman who loved him. Of course, he still couldn't understand how Laxus could have strayed from the straight and narrow by having someone like (y/n) by his side, but the main thing was that now, he wasn't just interested in possessing power.
Surprisingly, even Natsu hadn't said anything, he hadn't intervened to ask (y/n) to fight him, or Laxus. He'd realised that this wasn't the time, and it was one of the rare occasions when he finally understood the need not to be interrupted. Gray had done the same, not yet trying to provoke the pink-haired one, after all he could wait.
Once the reunion at the guild centre was over, (y/n) and Laxus headed towards the Thunder God Tribe to have a little more privacy. The young woman smiled at Freed, Bickslow and Evergreen; she'd had time to really get to know them since she was a child, but also in a different way as Laxus's girlfriend. Once the blond was seated, he pulled her closer to him, making her sit on his lap, putting a firm arm around her waist to hold her against his body.
“-You’re coming back to the guild right ?” She whispers to his only attention, looking at him expectantly.
“-I don’t know yet baby, for the moment I’m just happy to be here. I will speak to gramps later.”
“-Then you’re still living with me, I have your stuff in my closet.”
“-Of course, even if I didn’t want to, you would have kidnapped me, you little minx.”
The couple started to laugh, happy to finally be back together after so many years. She did not let him go, keeping her arms around him.
⋆.ೃ࿔⛈ ݁ ˖*༄
For the rest of the night, (y/n) stayed with Laxus, her face against his chest, finally complete again. The guild had slowly begun to empty, with those who had lodgings outside leaving to join him. The young woman couldn't help but feel sorry for her friends, as when they had disappeared, the guild had managed to pay some of the rent so that their debts weren't too high, but over the last 4 years, this had become totally impossible. Missions had become rarer and rarer, guide members were leaving, and the worst was during the Grand Magic Games. The guild's reputation had been destroyed in such a short space of time.
Laxus drew her attention by gently kissing her cheek, making her lift her face towards him so that she could meet his gaze. There was so much love in his eyes that (y/n) thought she might start crying again just from that.
"I love you.” She said softly, placing a hand on his jaw. "And I missed you terribly."
"I love you too". He grabs her hand and places a kiss on it. "Let's go home, shall we? I need to be forgiven.”
There was something in his gaze that instantly lit a flame in (y/n). It was a look she could recognise at any moment, something she could never forget. And it told her that her night was not about to end. The woman agreed, rising first, followed by Laxus, who wasted no time in taking her hand and pulling her out of the guild.
The walk to their shared flat seemed to last an eternity, with Laxus's firm hand still in hers, leading the way at a quick pace. He didn't even take a second to look around, the only thing that mattered to him at the moment was (y/n). He had never felt the need to be close to her so strongly, the need to kiss her, to show her his love, to prove to her that he had come back and that he would never leave her alone again.
No sooner had they entered their flat than Laxus pushed her against the door, pressing his lips directly against hers in a passionate, fiery kiss. The couple knew that if they had kissed in the guild, they would have ended up putting on a show that their friends would not have wanted to see. And all that tension was being released as the two came to lose themselves in each other's arms.
"-If you only knew how much I'd missed your lips." He said between kisses, his voice having suddenly become deeper, his hands had begun to venture down her body, reaching under her T-shirt to caress the soft skin of her stomach. "-I missed your body, your skin, your voice, everything about you."
"-Laxus..." She intervenes in a low voice, meeting his gaze. "-I need you so much, please." Her voice became more plaintive, almost begging.
“-I know baby, but you gotta wait.” He replied softly, continuing to kiss her.
They kissed again, Laxus gently running his tongue over her lips before nibbling her bottom lip. At his movement, (y/n) let out a plaintive moan. Between her thighs, she could already feel the moisture building up, and only the desire to see the blond man take care of it filled her mind. However, he seemed determined to discover her body again, as if it were their first time. (Y/n) came and put his arms around her shoulders, bringing him even closer to her. She could feel a lump forming against her, but knew better than to say anything to him, the tension had to be built up, they both had to get closer to the edge, the better they would fall.
The blonde only broke the kiss for a few seconds, just long enough to look at his girlfriend, her eyes slightly moist, filled with passion and desire. A desire that only he was capable of satisfying. This thought only excited him even more, and he came back to kiss her fiercely, removing his own jacket at the same time and letting it fall to their feet. (y/n)'s jacket joined it only moments later.
Their body temperature seemed to have risen a hundred degrees in just a few minutes, and all it took was one kiss to fill them with excitement.
The couple began to explore each other's bodies over the top of their clothes, and Laxus was the first to put his hands under her top again to touch her body. Sensing (y/n)'s curves, he broke the kiss they were sharing, nibbling her neck to put a few love marks on it, leaving his mark, showing everyone that she was his, and his alone.
“-Such a good girl for me, so sweet, so soft.” His deep voice sent shivers down (y/n)'s spine, making her close her eyes as she looked forward to the next step.
“-Please, please, I’ll be good for you, but please, just touch me already.”
He clicked his tongue lightly, shaking his head as he looked at her disapprovingly. Slowly, he raised a hand, catching her jaw.
"I taught you to be patient, have you forgotten everything already? It's all right, we'll start again from the beginning."
Laxus looked at her, placing a gentle kiss on her lips. He intended to take his time, of course, but he could only understand her desire, her needs. The blond was going to tease her, but in the end, she would be the one to have the last word.
(Y/n) smiled softly, she could feel that he wanted to touch her as much as she did, and yet he held back. The blond returned to kiss her neck just after he had removed her T-shirt, revealing her bra, and using one of his hands, he untied the last piece of clothing, leaving her breasts for him to see alone. Laxus turned his gaze to it, placing one of her breasts in his hand, taking her nipple between two fingers and beginning to touch it. As for the second, he took it into his mouth, sucking gently. The young woman quickly began to moan, throwing her head back against the front door.
She had waited so long to feel his touch, to feel the pleasure that only he could make her feel for 7 years, 7 long years. Laxus was a desperate man, he wanted to see her face contort with pleasure, so he came to torture her chest, coming to knead her breasts one after the other.
(y/n) felt her body getting hotter and hotter, the fire completely overwhelming her at the sensation Laxus was making her feel. The blond looked up at her, before slowly moving his second hand down to his trousers, unzipping them. She didn't waste another second sliding them down his legs. He pulled his mouth away from her, putting his arms around her waist to carry her.
Quickly, he took the common path to the bedroom, before sitting on the edge of the bed, leaving her on his lap. She came to kiss him, putting her arms around his neck, her breasts pressed against his chest.
Laxus's hands came to rest on her buttocks as he quickly devoured her lips. Their tongues began a dance together, both with their eyes closed, and both craving each other more and more. The blond came to move her against him, and the young woman moaned into his mouth as she felt her humidity rub against the blond's trousers, giving him a much-needed rub for his crotch.
“-Go ahead baby, come on, use me.”
(y/n) didn't hesitate, starting to accelerate against him. Laxus's fingers became firmer on her buttocks, helping her with her movements. He didn't waste a second of the show, his face concentrated on hers, watching her eyebrows furrow with pleasure, her eyes close as soon as one of the rubbing strokes touched her clitoris particularly well, her half-open mouth letting out moans of pleasure.
“-I know you’re getting closer, baby girl. Does it feel good ? Do you like using my legs for your little pleasure ? We have the entire night for it, you have no idea of how much orgasm I will give you.”

@steddie-spooktober day 8: bonfire | 447 words | G |
For hours, the bonfire in Steve's backyard had been a roaring blaze, surrounded by chatter and laughter that burned just as bright, just as free. The kids chased each other around with marshmallow sticks while the older teens drank beer and told ghost stories. Actually, who were they kidding - the adults were just as loud and obnoxious as the kids. Eddie himself was the one who'd started the stick battle in the first place when he attempted to fight Robin for the seat on the bench next to Steve, claiming the smoke was blowing in his eyes where he was sitting. He'd made a valiant effort but ultimately lost and had to claim his victory through subterfuge instead, AKA stealing her spot when she got up to go to the bathroom. He stayed there for the rest of the night. (Robin rolled her eyes and took Eddie's old seat. “There's no smoke here, dumbass,” she said, and Eddie shrugged. Maybe he just wanted to sit by Steve.)
Now, though, the flames are burning low, the conversation so too, and no one has the energy left to try to get either going again. It's late, the party’s over. One by one the rest of the group disperses, says their goodbyes, until only Steve and Eddie remain by the remains of the fire. Neither of them make any move to follow suit, in no hurry to leave and perfectly content to stay right here sitting on this bench for a little while longer.
Left alone with the quiet and the dying embers, something seems to shift in the space between them. One glance at Steve now has Eddie feeling all of the sudden breathless and mesmerized.
Maybe it's the fading firelight, bathing them in a dusky orange glow, sleepy shadows dancing languidly across their faces. Maybe it's the smile Steve gives him, the softest little curve at the corner of his mouth. Or maybe it's just the beers they've had and the joint they'd shared hazing over their minds. Whatever it is, Eddie finds himself leaning in, and Steve meets him halfway.
Their lips connect, fit together like puzzle pieces. It's nothing more than a slow, gentle press of a kiss, lingering for only a few moments before they separate, but it's enough to leave a warmth rippling through Eddie's chest, a mini bonfire of his own sparked in his heart.
Maybe later they'll talk about it. Maybe tomorrow they'll face each other with awkward confessions of regret or dramatic confessions of love.
Or maybe, Eddie thinks as Steve settles his head on his shoulder and entwines their hands together, maybe they don't need to say anything at all.

A blurb for Max Verstappen where he does his best to keep you and the kids away from the Drive to Survive netflix crew but wants you around the new docuseries being filmed about Max and his life off the track
"Netflix people are going to be in our garage tomorrow morning", Max said as he came out of the ensuite bathroom, careful with the noise he was making as the kids were in the living room area of the hotel room, the sofas turning into beds so they could sleep near you still despite the half wall that created a sense of separation between the spaces.
"So we'll just join you for the afternoon then", you added, showing him your understood what he meant, "have you spoken to them about us not wanting their faces shown in the show? You know how they sometimes record the paddock and other people show. I know it's inevitable sometimes, mas maybe blurr it out or something", you tried.
"Yes, I spoke to them this morning. They seemed understanding enough, although there was the usual comment of why and if they could do this or that", Max shrugged, getting in the bed next to you, "what did you tell them?", you wondered.
"Didn't let them get too far. They already know where we stand with you and the kids showing up, so there's not need to beat around the bush again and again. They're butthurt because you appear on the docuseries, but it sounds like it's a their problem and not ours, so I'm not too fussed. And neither should you be", he smiled, kissing your cheek and letting you snuggle up to him.
.
"Are you ready, Y/N?", one of the producers asked as they arranged the camera on your car so it could catch both you and the person asking the questions.
"I'm going to pick up the kids from school now, they're at a very good age now where it's not hard getting them to leave the house in the morning because they love going to school, but also not too hard to get them to leave school because they also love being at home and know they'll see their friends tomorrow", you chuckled, remembering Finn's tantrum when you wanted to take him home and he wanted to stay in school because he wanted to keep paying with his friends whose parents were running a little bit late to pick them up too.
"Is it hard juggling all of this with Max being away for some good chunks of time every now and again?", she asked as you stopped at a red light.
"It isn't as hard as before", you reasoned, "when they were younger and their needs were different, I relied a lot on my mother in law and my parents whenever Max wasn't home, which was really mostly weekends because he arranged the schedule and RedBull made it work. But now they're older and they're at a stage where they are a little bit more independent and, honestly, we just take each day as it comes and go from there", you smiled.
"How is parenting along with Max?", she wondered, "you know, there are many moments in parenting where you think 'this is definitely not the way we should do this but it works for now so we just stick to it' - and you really hope for the best in these cases -, but last week we both went to a parent-teacher meeting and both teachers said that the kids were doing well, they were kind, empathetic, respectful. - And what is there more to ask, you know? - we both got out of the meeting and we're like 'yeah, this parenting thing is going just fine',", you smiled, "obviously, we got home to our little girl having a meltdown about not being able to fly, but really? It's an amazing journey parenting with Max, even when he has to tell our daughter that that's not something humans do and let her mourn a capacity she never had", you chuckled.
(Thank you for your submission ✨️)

november 2 2024 vs habs, 3-1 win
bond fic part three (1, 2). i don't think they'll all be in this 'world' from now on, but i definitely plan to revisit, especially if sid keeps saying insane things like 'i love....really enjoy playing with him' on television while making the most blatant genoface of all time.
Sid feels guilty about the bond.
It doesn’t take a genius to tell that it’s benefitting him right now a lot more than it is Geno. It also doesn’t require any special detective skills to narrow down what exactly it was that caused it to clamor for recognition now, after presumably years of lying dormant—the specialists the team has hauled in haven’t been able to pinpoint exactly when it started to click into place, but they’ve narrowed it down to sometime in 2014.
Sochi. Coughing up a 3-1 playoffs lead to the Rangers (the first time). The front office getting a clean sweep, with barely-veiled references to their leadership, or rather lack thereof, being the cause. Sid remembers how much closer to Geno he felt after their post-Olympics conversation, how much they talked that summer, hours on the phone railing at ownership, at management, at their teammates.
He’d wondered why Geno brought that up after his 500th goal. It had felt personal, almost, to hear him give up such a private, important detail like when they really started to consider each other family to the public.
Now, though, Sid knows why. That was the bond. It was the bond, which had sat patiently for a decade, pushing Geno closer to Sid, making him beg for time on Sid’s line, which—really, shouldn’t that have been a clue? He puts up 11 points in five games and suddenly wants to switch to wing? Geno’s always said that the Penguins were Sid’s team, always deferred to him and stepped back and let him take the spotlight, but at the expense of his own points production? It was the bond sensing a weakness, a stumbling in Sid’s ability to lead the team on his own, that pushed Geno up off his own line to Sid’s side. Geno never would have argued so hard to give up his role otherwise, especially not when his line was helping keep the team afloat.
After the Anaheim game, they’d stood in the parking lot for almost 20 minutes, Geno holding them up as he braced himself against the car, before someone found them. The athletic trainers had come running first, then the medical staff, and they’d been examined in separate rooms. Sid had been allowed to drive himself home, but Geno was still in with Vyas when he left, sitting on an exam table and shaking so hard he had to lean against a trainer to stay upright.
Everything in Sid had screamed at him to stay, but Kevin had firmly ushered him onward, and Sid had no choice but to go home.
And then Geno missed practice. A maintenance day, Sully called it, but the twanging discontent at the periphery of Sid’s sensation said otherwise, and he’d have gone straight to Geno’s after practice if he hadn’t been firmly warned off doing so. He needs space, Vyas had said. He’s not adapting as well as you to the bond, and proximity is pushing him past his own limits. He can’t help it. You need to give him today, and he’ll be better tomorrow. This will take time for the two of you to adjust before it’s smooth.
When Geno shows up for the game, though, the circles under his eyes are so dark that Kris is at his side immediately, brow furrowed with worry as he corrals Geno off to a corner of the lounge to talk to him. Geno listens, but doesn’t do anything except shake his head, even when Kris gets more animated, talking with his hands and getting in Geno’s space.
Sid leaves them to it. Kris knows what happened, is one of the few people they told, but there’s nothing he or anyone else can do. There’s nothing Sid can do, even, except keep playing and listen to the staff and hope that whatever is keeping Geno from adjusting resolves itself soon.
They can’t avoid each other in the game, though. Sid doesn’t think they’ve ever shared this much ice time in their whole careers as they have the last two games. Every shift, every faceoff, Geno’s there at his left, crouched down and staring at the puck, waiting for it to drop and play to start. On the bench they bend together over the iPad, and even Ricky trying to sit between them at Vyas’s request after the first period doesn’t last more than a few shifts.
Sid feels like he’s orbiting something, their gravitational pulls drawing them closer and closer together; collision feels inevitable and imminent. He can’t stay away from Geno, and he doesn’t want to.
Geno on his wing is a revelation. He’s settling into it now, digging in the corners and whipping the puck around the boards back to the point, doing all the dirty work to set up the rest of their skaters for a goal that he doesn’t get a single bit of credit on the scoresheet for. Sid knows, though, can feel the bond humming when they’re clicking out there, knows that his passes to Geno are going to hit every time, knows that Geno will find him through traffic and set him up no matter what.
It’s the third period when Geno starts swearing on the bench.
Sid scoots closer and tries to talk to him, but Geno shakes his head vehemently and hits his stick on the boards, going off in Russian to himself, and when he stands up and moves down the bench, Sid gives up.
They get the win. It’s hockey night in Canada, so Sid has to grab some branded towel and talk to the kid from Sportsnet, but his mind is a million miles away.
It’s like watching from a distance when he hears himself almost say he loves Geno on national television.
He’s able to backtrack, soften it and change what he was about to say, but when he finally escapes to the locker room, his hands are shaking as he unties his skates.
Sid can practically see Geno at home, pacing his kitchen and fighting with himself over how he feels. It’s the same conflict that’s been bubbling up since Halloween night in Sid, the one he didn’t notice until Geno left after the game. The same fear, the same worry, the same realization that for years there’s been something there that neither of them have seen.
Sid isn’t adapting better to the bond at all, it turns out. He’s just been better at folding himself in denial over what it meant.

could you write something with kisses before dinner where avery feels like she’s not your your steve’s favourite and she gets upset?
for you my love! dad!steve x pregnant!mom!you. 3.7k
Steve gives Bethie's hand a tug. "Come on, this way."
Bethie follows without complaint, her rain boots smacking the sidewalk with each step. Steve keeps checking to make sure the umbrella's covering her, though there's little need for his worrying when she's wearing her rain mac, a scarf, and a super thick sweater under her coat.
It's a very short walk to the door for Avery's classroom. She and the other first graders get called out one by one from a huge door that exits a cubby room. Steve stands where he always does, out of the way from most but close enough that Avery doesn't have to look far.
Steve hadn't always wanted kids. When he was sixteen, he thought that having children might be the worst thing in the world, not because he'd ever been around any kids that weren't worth loving, but because they acted like a sort of glue, sticking you to another person. But he got older, and he realised he wanted to be stuck, and then he realised there isn't any glue to children, they can't serve as an adhesive that binds you to someone. You either love your partner or you don't (of course, it's a little more complicated than that) and children are usually separate.
Steve met you. He loved you more than he ever loved another person. And then you had Avery, and Bethie, and Dove, and he somehow loved you more for it. It's immeasurable.
Steve loves you, and he loves his kids most of all. You wouldn't be offended, you feel the same —kids are a different kind of love.
It's why being out in the rain doesn't matter. Bethie's hand is warm where he covers it in his, and when she gives a little shiver he crouches down to rub her shoulders, knowing it doesn't help but wishing it did.
He's so excited to see Avery he can't describe it right, and it doesn't make any sense because he saw her seven hours ago at drop off when she kissed him goodbye and ran away to go play races with her friends. Since then, he's taken Bethie to her doctor’s check up, chased Dove around the house for a bath, put on a load of washing, made dinner preparations, done the dishes, all while acting as a willing serf for a moderately pregnant you on bed rest after a bout of high blood pressure. All of those anxieties and chores and exhaustions —he wouldn't have it any other way— and still he's geared up to see his oldest.
Avery usually runs out of the door like she's on springs, but today she's only walking. Steve groans as he stands up properly, beckoning for Avery to come and stand under the umbrella as he calls, "Hey, Avey-bear, where's your water bottle?"
She only has her lunch box.
"I think it's lost forever," she says, looking up at him with wide eyes.
He can't hug her with his hands full, but he gives her the best 'dad loves you' look that he can muster, his most adoring smile. "You think so? Don't worry, we'll fix it."
"It's not broken," she says.
"I just mean that we'll find it or I'll buy you another one." Avery holds her hand up. "Take your sisters, baby.”
"I wanna be under the umbrella," she whines.
Steve doesn't blame her. The rain is coming down heavier by the minute, and she doesn't have a nice sweater on like Beth. The weather wasn't as unpleasant this morning.
"You can hold it if you don't stab me in the eye," he says.
"Yes! Please please please," she says, accepting the umbrella he passes with a charmingly pleased smile.
They walk through the playground, the winding path to the parking lot and between cars. Steve picks Bethie up and carries her from the parking lot onward, worried she'll pull away. Avery tells him about her day without prompting, the umbrella jabbing him in the hips and stomach occasionally.
"We're making cards tomorrow for them, do you think the old people like cards?" she asks as they approach the car.
"I think they'll love your card."
Steve unlocks the doors and pulls Avery's open first. He takes the umbrella from her and she climbs into her car seat with a load of thunking and huffing. Steve didn't think it through, there's the umbrella to shake dry, car seat straps to click, and his arms are still full of Beth, who's been her usual quiet self the entire time.
"You okay, Beth?" he asks her.
"I'm cold," she murmurs.
Steve can't have that. He pushes the umbrella into the footwell by Avery's feet and water flecks the poor girl's jeans, but at least he has a hand free to click together her car seat strap. She lifts her head for a kiss and he doesn't recognise it until the door's shutting between them.
He winces and rushes to Bethie's side. "Sorry, babe," he says when he opens the door, putting Beth in her seat with ease. Avery pouts at him. "I'll give you a kiss when we get home, I'm sorry, my head's not screwed on tight enough right now. I'm just rushing to get back to mom."
Avery blows hair out of her face, annoyed.
The drive home is nice and slow. Steve's cargo is too important to rush and risk hydroplaning. Bethie's asleep by the time they get home as he hoped she would be, and Avery is itching for the bathroom. He lets her out first and she sprints away before he can get a kiss.
Steve scoops Bethie up and whacks his head on the car roof. He does it every single time he tries to get her out, and he stands there with the rain pounding his back, sucking air in through his teeth. "Sugar," he whispers.
He pulls Bethie securely to his chest, locks the car and climbs the short step into the house, head pounding. He's unsurprised and horrified to see you up in the kitchen making Avery a cup of juice, Dove propped on your baby bump like a perfectly sized seat.
"Not okay," he says, hands covering Bethie's ears as he closes the front door behind him. "Go sit down now. I'm not kidding. Right now."
"Steve–"
"Y/N," he says, real annoyance in his voice. He doesn't like bossing you around, doesn't like being a jerk, but you can't mess with bed rest, not so far along. It's not even the baby he's thinking about, it's you. "Go lay down, please."
You smile guiltily. "I'm feeling better."
Avery looks like she's the one who's had the telling off when you leave. She sips from her juice cup and won't meet his eyes, her sleeves dark with water. She has a bad habit of not rolling them up when she washes her hands, and Steve always sighs when he sees it.
Your home is oddly shaped. When you first walk in, you can see up the stairs to the right, and you can see straight down the hall to the kitchen, and you can also see into the living room to the left. The living room leads into the kitchen, too, which means there's double the baby gates.
Steve puts Bethie down on the big bean bag by the windows and finds you laying down on the L-shaped couch, Dove content where she sits by your hip. Your hands play with the thin blonde wisps of hair at her neck. The longer it grows the darker it becomes.
"Sorry for worrying you," you say, not looking at him. "I really do feel better."
"I'm glad you do, but you know it's not one of those things that works on feelings," Steve says. He rubs his forehead, and then he drops his hand against his thigh in defeat. "Sorry for being snappy. You freaked me out."
"I have to get up sometimes. To pee and stuff," you say. "Will you get Ave her juice? She wants Mapap."
"What? For what?" he asks.
Dove turns in her seat to look at Steve like she's surprised he's here. Then, in a startling turn of events, she babbles happily. "Daddy," she says, holding up her hands. "Home."
"I'm home," he agrees sweetly.
"Daddy," she says again.
Dove loves Steve, but she's always had a preference for her mom. When you're working, Dove is more than happy to spend her days in Steve's arms, in his lap, some days she's stuck to him like a leech, but you walk through the door and she's immediately team Mom. It makes sense, she must miss you while you're away. For the first time in a while, Dove's had to miss Steve instead.
He picks her up with a huge beaming smile and kisses her cheek, still chubby with baby fat. "You're happy to see me?" he asks against her skin.
"I think she has a tummy ache."
"Dove?" Steve asks, folding a curl behind Dove's ear.
"Avery." You grimace. "Are you sure I can't stand up? I feel fine."
"Don't get up." Steve gives Dove another kiss and says to her, "I love you, I'll be right back. Please still love me."
Dove curls into your chest when Steve puts her down in a way that says she certainly won't still love him when he returns, but she enjoyed the hug.
Steve almost trips in the doorway to the kitchen over a teddy bear. Avery eyes him reproachfully, her glass of juice a quarter filled.
"Mommy says you have a tummy ache. Let's get you some medicine, yeah?" Steve asks.
"It's okay."
"It stopped hurting?"
"No," Avery says, frowning. She looks to be on the sudden verge of tears as kids tend to be.
Steve attempts to rescue her. "Okay, baby. Come here," he says, holding out his arms. Avery puts her glass on the counter and walks into his arms, a sad sound squeezed from her as he carries her to the kitchen table. He sits her on a table mat, ducking to be the same height as her eyes, his hands finding a gentle home on her small shoulders. "What's the situation, honey? What kind of pain is it?"
"It feels weird," she says quietly.
"Throw up weird?" he asks, the most important port of call.
"No."
"You sure?" he asks.
Avery shakes her head. Steve doesn't think she'll throw up, but she looks so unhappy that he frowns at her, rubbing the nape of her neck. "What's the pain feel like?"
"Just hurts."
"Okay. I'll get you some Mapap, honey. What would make you feel better? A cuddle?" He leans forward to whisper, "Are you feeling gassy? Maybe you need a burp."
"No, dad," she says. She must be feeling awful, she doesn't laugh. Burps are always funny.
Steve grabs the Mapap from the fringe and tips it onto a spoon. "Here," he murmurs, passing her the last of her juice so she's ready to chase the odd taste of her medicine away.
Avery hesitates to open her mouth.
She has the same eyes as Steve, and right now they're filled with a look hasn't seen in his own for years. He's not sure what to make of it. She doesn't look sick, she looks sad, really sad, driving Steve to a new kind of panic.
"I'll take some with you," he says.
"Really?" she asks.
It's kids Mapap —he could drink the bottle and still have a backache afterward. "Yeah, really really. You want me to go first or second?"
She deliberates. "First."
Steve lifts the spoon of medicine to his nose. He knows he should pretend it's delicious, no big deal, but he sniffs it suspiciously, touching the tip of his tongue to it and wincing dramatically at the taste.
"I get a hug after this, right?" he asks.
Avery laughs. "Yeah, dad."
He raises his brows, as if to say, Well, in that case, and takes the medicine. It's a fake strawberry flavour and disgusting but he pretends it's only sort of bad.
Avery offers him her cup of juice as soon as he takes the spoon out. She's lovely.
Steve makes another cup of juice and another spoon of medicine. Avery takes it without any hesitation, going as far as to say, "It's not that bad."
Steve's thankful for the reprieve. He really hadn't been liking the way Avery looked like she was feeling. He scoops her up as though she weighs nothing (she grows like a bamboo shoot every summer, but Steve is strong) and carries her to the living room, where you're half asleep now and Dove's definitely not, her short fingers petting your neck.
"She's sleeping," Dove tells Steve factually as he sits.
Avery leans against Steve's chest.
"I'm not sleeping," you mumble, "just my Dove is being so nice to me."
"Well, not to make anyone jealous or anything, but Avery promised me a prime time kiss. Like, a huge one."
"No I didn't," Avery says, confused.
"Yes you did, don't be a meanie. I meant to give you one in the car, 'member?"
"Oh," Avery says, "right."
Steve gets his kisses and a great big cuddle, hugging his eldest baby as close as he can. The TV plays one of Dove's favourite movies and you fall asleep, snoring and drooling at once, dribbling from the corner of your mouth. It seeps into the cushion you've underneath you. Dove laughs and points it out to Steve and Avery. Avery's a sweetheart, so she wipes your drool away and pushes a fingertip into your lips until you close your mouth.
Dove climbs off of you and wanders over to Bethie. "Leave her alone, Dove," Steve warns.
Dove gives him a, Who, me? look and climbs onto the bean bag, to Steve's annoyance. Luckily, Dove's feeling nice, and she doesn't wake her sister. She lays down beside her and loosely holds her hand, and after half an hour, everyone's asleep besides Steve and Avery.
He can't help looking at you constantly, worried you're gonna get sick and he won't notice. He's worrying the same thing about Ave.
He's too obvious.
"Is mom okay?" Avery asks.
"Mom's okay. Are you worrying?" he asks.
"You're worrying," Avery says.
"I know mom's gonna be okay, I can promise you she's fine," he says. "But it's like you. You're not feeling very well and it makes me worry, but I know you'll be okay."
Avery doesn't say anything, rubbing her nose against his collar.
"Do you believe me?" he asks.
"About what?"
"About everything, I guess."
"Yeah," she says. Steve gives her shoulder a little pat.
"Okay, good. Mom is fine, and baby's fine, and we'll all be okay as long as she rests up. And your tummy stops hurting, duh."
Avery isn't cheered up by his doting, sweet tones. She stays flat as a pancake on his chest and doesn't move an inch for a while. Steve waits. He knows Avery like the back of his hand. She has something she wants to say, or tell him, or ask.
"Dad?" she whispers.
"Yeah?"
"Is it okay to be nobody's favourite?"
"What?"
Avery hides her face.
Steve encourages her back out again, gently carding through her hair. "What do you mean?" he asks.
Her bottom lip trembles. "Dove is mommy's favourite, and your favourite is Beth, so who's favourite am I?" she asks.
"You're my favourite," he says on automatic.
"But you can only have one," she says, glaring at him.
"That's not how this works, you're my girls. You're my daughters. You're all my favourites."
"You love Bethie most."
Steve wants to say, Of course I don't, how could you think that? He wants to say, Avery, don't be silly. He wants to say, That's not true, because it genuinely isn't.
"I'm so sorry," he says instead.
Avery sniffs. "Why?"
"Ave, I'm so sorry. That's not what you're supposed to think, I– honey, why do you think I love Bethie most?" he asks. "It's not true, I adore your sister, but I love you the same. I love you so much it made my heart actually get bigger," Steve says, rushing to explain it, wanting there to be no doubt. "When you were born, it was the best day of my life. The best day of my life."
"You and Beth are always snuggling," Avery says. Steve has to strain to hear her.
"Your sister loves hugs, and I love giving them to her," he agrees. "Do you wish we hugged more often?"
She nods. He nods back.
"Then we will. I promise."
"I want to be your favourite," she says.
"Avery," he sighs. "You are. It's hard to explain it, but I love you and Bethie and Dove and even the baby all the same."
Avery starts crying. Steve had known it was going to happen, and it still feels like a whack to the chest, flat-palmed.
"Is this why your tummy hurts?" he asks quietly.
"I want to be your favourite," she says again, cheeks shining with tears. "I want to be mom's favourite, it's not fair."
"You're my favourite singer," he says.
Avery frowns.
"You're my favourite singer. You're my favourite at putting her socks on. You're my favourite pancake maker, my favourite–"
"It's not the same," Avery says.
Steve takes her hands in his. "Yes it is! You're my favourite girl just like your sisters, but if that's not good enough, you're my favourite at so much other stuff, Ave. You have my favourite smile, and do my favourite dances. I'm really sorry you think you're no one's favourite," he says, aching. "I promise you, me and your mom love you so much it's weird."
"You promise?" she checks.
"I promise. Cross my heart."
Avery sniffles. Steve wipes her warm cheeks with the side of his hand, tucking her hair behind her ears. She's his mirror. If there's one thing Steve wanted, it was that she would never feel how he felt growing up.
"I can make it up to you, sweetheart, you tell me what it is that makes you upset and I can fix it. Will you tell me, please?"
Avery tells him in little fits and starts. It's nothing done maliciously, ever, but he can heartbreakingly see why Avery might have stacked all of these things together and started wondering what's wrong. Bethie gets super tired in the early evenings, and when she's tired she clings, hoarding Steve's affection for herself; Dove's young enough to be a handful, hoarding yours. There's the missed kiss in the car after school, and a hug that didn't include her at breakfast. A few days ago, you said to Dove, "Mom needs a kiss from her favourite girl." You had no idea Avery was awake, and you didn't mean it with even a drop of cruelty, but it doesn't matter. Avery took it to heart, and she's been upsetting herself with it ever since.
"Do you want to talk to mom?" he asks her, stroking her cheek with his knuckle.
"I don't know…"
"I can talk to her for you, if you want to. Or we can talk to her together. She'll be really sorry, honey, I promise. You know mommy doesn't have a mean bone in her body."
You wake up not too long after that, dragging yourself into a sluggish sleeping position, hand on your bump. "Woah, she's kicking me."
You look up to them with a huge smile, evidently excited to show them, hand already in the hem of your shirt and pulling up, but you notice their matching frowns and say, "What's wrong?"
Steve explains. Avery looks at your bump rather than your face as he does, barely reacting to his hand stroking her hair back.
"Oh," you say, pouting gently, eyebrows pinching together, "Avery, I didn't mean it like that. I didn't mean she's my only favourite, that's not–" You hold your hand out for her. "Sorry, baby. I've really upset you, haven't I?"
Avery squeezes her eyes closed and nods.
"I bet that was really sad, thinking you weren't our favourite girl," you murmur, voice imbued with apology, sympathy, and an overflowing measure of love.
"It's okay," Avery says.
"It wasn't just your fault," Steve says to you. "It was me too."
"Can I come and lie on you?" Avery asks.
Your eyes light with relief. "Yes, yeah. Don't kick my tummy, okay?" You pull Avery onto your front. She's cautious not to dig a knee into your bump but otherwise collapses boneless into your arms.
Parents make literally hundreds and thousands of mistakes just like kids do. Steve knows he hadn't meant to hurt Avery, but he did, and he feels overwhelmingly depressed about it. Being a dad is the only thing he's ever been good at. This is his biggest screw up to date.
You have your eyes closed, your face against Avery's pressing a soft kiss to her cheek. Blindly, you squeeze Steve's arm.
"I love you so much, Avery," you say. "Thanks for telling us how you're feeling. You're always brave."
"I'm not," Avery says. All the love and affection is finally getting to her. She sounds bashfully pleased rather than sad now, hugging your neck extra tight.
"You are!" You pull Steve toward you. "Dad knows. Isn't she just the best in the world?"
Steve covers her back with his arm. The youngest both snore unawares on the big bean bag, the TV flickering with the static at the end of the movie. He should've started dinner an hour ago, but he doesn't feel hungry.
"You're the nicest, strongest, kindest girl I've ever met," Steve says. He's laying it on thick, and every word is true.
"What about me?" you joke.
"You're fine."
"Dad!" Avery laughs, turning her head to smile at him reproachfully. "You can't say that, tell the truth!"
"You're joint first best," he corrects. He covers his mouth with his hand, whispering to Avery, "But you're the very very best, Ave."
Her eyes go soft, straight lashes kissing in the outer corners as she smiles. "Thanks, dad."

Knowledge Prologue
Tumblr media
check out my other works here!
Summary:
The story begins the same for everyone, on the day of the ceremony, one of the most important for all the kids who take part in it every year, and Michelle will not miss the opportunity to leave behind a faction that she did not feel belonged to her.
On her journey, however, she will encounter someone who will make her initiation feel like hell.
Pairing: Eric Coulter x reader
Word Count: 475
Warnings: REALLY slow burn, angst, ncn elements, charachte death, Eric being an asshole at the start, hurt/comfort
"Are you ready for tomorrow?"
"No, how could I be?"
"Come on, Ellie, it won't be the end of the world." A slender, red-haired girl with a face dotted with freckles smiled at her, attempting to reassure her, but to no avail, as she too was gripped by anxiety. "So, it's decided." her smile slwowly fading.
Ellie, gazing at the panorama before her, watched as the city below slowly faded with the onset of night. A gentle wind blew, and she tried to shield herself from its cold by wrapping herself in the white blazer draped over her shoulders.
She shrugged, her voice a sigh. "It was decided years ago, Anne..."
Anne looked at her, tears welling up in her eyes. The looming Aptitude Test would separate them, the friendship they had forged would break irreparably.
They could have lied, said everything would be fine, but in that moment, on the rooftop of the building where they had lived for sixteen years and shared countless memories, they realized it would be one of the last times they would see each other.
The redhead approached her friend, resting her head on her shoulder, seeking comfort. Ellie embraced her, allowing a few tears to escape, silently reliving all the moments they had shared together.
But in the end, they had always known. They had become inseparable for a reason, both excluded from the faction that was supposed to be their home, too different from all the other kids dressed in black and white like them, yet at the same time too different from each other to choose the same faction.
Anne was, she was good.
Ellie watched her as she tried to suppress her sobs, hiding within her arms. Her heart was made of gold, rare in its kind. Always ready to help others, hesitant to speak anything but the truth knowing it could hurt someone.
However, the Candor were not pleased with all this caring nature of hers. They were not pleased even with Ellie's silence, especially with her penchant for getting into trouble.
Her mother considered her a disgrace to their family. Ellie's antics tarnished the name her father had built through years of hard work before disappearing, presumably killed by the outcasts, those without a faction.
It wasn't a secret that her mother was more excited for Ellie's Aptitude Test day than Ellie herself. She didn't hide the fact that if Ellie left their faction, she would do everyone a favor.
"I'll miss you," Anne managed to say as she wiped away her tears, her eyes now red and slightly swollen.
Ellie smiled faintly but said nothing, returning her gaze to the landscape before them; the city was fully illuminated now that the sun had completely set, creating a breathtaking view.
"I should go, or they'll wonder where I am. Goodbye, Ellie."
"Goodbye, Anne."

Ronal X Fem Metkayina Reader X Tonowari Pt 2
Part 1, Final Part
You were really upset with Ronal and Tonowari. You usually would overlook their attitudes, and their mannerisms but, this pregnancy and the fact that they both missed it when they knew you were close was foul. All of the emotions and feelings you had bottled up and taken at face value exploded and you had told them everything from the moment you got together to the present as they stood silent for once not having anything to say. The silence said everything you needed to know. You demanded to have a separate Marui from them and when they tried to deny it, you explained that they didn't even cuddle you so they'll be fine. That was roughly a month ago and you've had their mothers and your own come and see you neither of them trying to convince you to go back or force you to do anything you don't want to do.
"Ma'ite, let us watch him and you go take a walk, yeah? You haven't left the Marui in a long time." It was true, you were so pissed at Ronal and Tonowari but, you had a bigger fear of being seen by the people knowing they will have suspicious and not in the mood to be confronted. You still would allow them to see Aonung and you saw Tsireya but, it wasn't the same. You will give them credit for trying, your favorite foods, jewelry and even clothes have been left for you to find in the morning and evenings. You wanted a verbal apology and to talk but, that would mean the three of you needed to actually sit down instead of you dismissing them, huh?
"You're right. I'll be back. Irayo." You smiled at the three women including your mom pretending to not notice that they were surprised but, said nothing. You got up and once outside the Marui you took a deep breath and made your way down to the beach. You bypassed a few Metkayina who greeted you a bit confusingly but, did nevertheless. The children flocked to you, talking your ear off and you allowed yourself to be pulled into their games. It was nice. They were so excited that you were actually playing with them and who were you to ruin it? Yes, you came out here to clear your mind but, they were helping in their own way, children always saw and understood in their own way more than adults do.
"When can we see baby Aonung!" Of course, they wanted to see your bundle of joy but, he was at home right now.
"How about tomorrow?" They cheered but, you held up your hand making sure you had all of their attention. "However, all of you must be good and do everything you're supposed to, okay?" They nodded seriously and you fought the grin for a second "Can you all be good for your parents? For me?" They cheered happily and you allowed the smile to overtake your face this time. "Group hug!" You always did this with the children and they threw themselves knocking you over with a laugh. You let them get their fill before they dispersed allowing you to get back on your feet and head towards your original destination. Once on the beach away in a little secluded part, you sat on a rock ledge letting your feet dip in the water. You allowed your thoughts to wander. You wanted to forgive them, you could forgive them but, they needed to earn it. They had to earn your forgiveness and you will admit the gifts are nice but, you wanted verbal apologies. You needed to be mentally stimulated by them. That was your gripe with them from the beginning of the relationship. Neither one wanted to take responsibility for when they were wrong but, you did. They acted like they didn't want the relationship to work.
"Ma'ite!" You jumped startled out of your thoughts looking ahead to see your father with Ronal's and Tonowari's father riding on Ilu's towards you. Those three were always together having no problem getting along with each other from the jump. The mothers either but, of course, you got the short end of the stick and ended up with the most headstrong, idiotic duos in the fucking village. Fuck your heart. "Why are you here alone? What's wrong?" You knew all three of them knew of you, Ronal, and Tonowari's situation. You smiled a bit tiredly at your dad making sure to wave at the other two who hovered waiting to hear your answer as well.
"They finally convinced me to come outside, they have Ao'nung all three of them." You addressed all of them with that statement. The four of you stayed together conversing about everything and anything, somehow getting on the topic of their childhood and the stupid things all three of them did. You forgot that the three of them were actually friends growing up and the bond the three had was that of triplets almost. It was endearing, each of them having a sixth sense for the other.
"THE AKULA ALMOST TOOK A CHUNK OF MY ASSHOLE" You were in a fit of hysterics right along with your dad and Ronal's dad listening to Tonowari's dad talk about getting chased by an Akula while hunting and he could feel it's breath on his butt. You pictured younger him swimming for his life since all this happened when Tonowari was a baby.
"Is that the same day I got bit on my nipples?" That ended you, a laugh from the gut escaping you listening to the absurdity of Ronal's dad's talk of getting his nipples almost bitten off by fish and his voice went higher than his mother's. You couldn't sit up, stomach and sides aching from laughing so much, tears streaming down your face missing the happy looks the three men shared continuing their exaggerated storytelling. If they told little white lies to get you to smile and laugh harder that was their secret and theirs alone.
---------------------------------------------------
By the time you went back to the Marui, you felt lighter than before, the talk with your father and the other two making you feel light on your feet. It was nice to giggle, to laugh, to smile. It felt like it was a weight on your shoulders lifted and you were sure to hug and kiss all of them in thanks and if you squeezed your father a little harder, a little longer then it's fine. He's your dad and your the baby girl so he can do it. Making it to the Marui you were greeted by Aonung on his back babbling away and squirming his way across the mat. It was a sight to behold
"Mama's baby boy." You got on your hands and knees crawled to him and lay beside him watching as he reached out to grab a hold of your hair that fell in your face.
"You seem to glow." You turned to Ronal's mom with a smile glancing at your mom and the other mother as well.
"The air did me well, I also saw the children and papa." You talked a little bit about what you did before coming back here not wanting to be far from Aonung. All years of your baby's life will be important but, the first couple of years is when you will solidify the kind of bond you will have with him. You want him to be able to trust you and you want to watch him become a successful young man. He will not be Olo'eyktan, that bestowed upon Tsireya who was born first. He can be whatever he chooses to be but, that is for another time.
"We will take our leave." You looked up bidding the three of them goodbye, purring at the way your mom caressed your face and pressed her forehead to hers in comfort before leaving as well. This left you alone with your thoughts and Aonung. You were tired of thinking so much because it led to all sorts of emotions that you didn't want to feel right now. It will affect Aonung and the last thing you wanted to do was upset your baby. Tsireya was a year older, a baby herself but, still older, and would whine whenever you were upset almost completely in tune with your emotions which was unnerving. It was also, a good sign that she would make a beautiful, intelligent Tsahik for the Metkayina one day. As you watched Aonung breathe your ears picked up on footsteps outside of your Marui. You were silent watching the door not surprised to see Tonowari and Ronal with stuff. They looked up meeting your gaze, hesitating but, they powered on placing food on the mat for you and two bracelets for Aonung. When they pulled back, you grabbed the bracelets inspecting them noticing that they had beads of the same color on his song cord that hung on the wall next to your own.
"Do you like it?" You looked over at Ronal who seemed bashful, a blush across the bridge of her nose to her ears. You were not used to seeing such an expression on her face so you stared at her taking in her features before focusing back on the bracelets with a light smile
"It matches his song cord." You hummed placing one of the bracelets on his wrist and the other one to the side with his other things. One day he will outgrow them and you have no doubt between the three of you, he will never miss it because a new one will take the old one's place. "Thank you." She let out a breath that you only picked up on because of the silence. It was a comfortable silence but, you knew the two of them wanted to say something so you patiently waited for either one to say anything.
"There is a spot I have found on one of my...explorations that I think you will like to see." You turned to Tonowari knowing that was the key word for him wanting to talk to you but, you wanted him to say it. "I want you to come with me. With us. If you have time and wish to tomorrow that is." You stared at Tonowari the same way you did with Ronal enjoying the way these two seemingly strong individuals squirmed under your gaze. Taking a breath deciding to end his suffering you answered.
"I will come. Tomorrow. I will find the two of you when I am ready." You didn't offer either of them a smile but, nodded watching the two of them exit the Marui with shy looks over their shoulders aimed at you. Once they were out of earshot you laid flat on your back bringing Aonung up off the floor to lie on your chest. "Let's hope those two idiots have enough brain power to earn me back, right ma'itan?" The only answer you got was a light snore.

The next part will be the final part because this was only supposed to have been a one-shot but, here we are! Hope you people enjoy it and see you in the next/last part!

Just a reminder before anyone gets too excited by an AO3 email tomorrow that Thursday I'll be posting the first batch of Halloween prompts on AO3, along with one of the miscellaneous ficlets I'd written before. If you hang out here a lot, you'll likely have seen them all before, but now they'll be in a handy place for bookmarking and re-reading! (They'll be posted separately from the main Resonant fic.)

Tumblr media
pairing: Minho x gender neutral!reader genre: fluff, slice of life warnings: cursing, alcohol + underage drinking (be responsible kids) word count: 4.7k notes: — changes made to skz ages: 00 line + jeongin are all graduating high school, mc/changbin/minho/chan have all just graduated college — for the record I don't hate miami as much as this fic might suggest, I'm just really fucking bored here Miami is boring. Minho is less boring. Put two and two together and this city still sucks, but maybe having Minho is enough.
Stray Kids Masterlist
Tumblr media
"I'm bored."
Minho doesn't even bother looking at his camera. "You've said that maybe ten thousand times in the past half hour."
"Yeah, because I meant it." You roll over your bed again. "I'm so fucking bored."
His sigh crackles through the FaceTime call. "Well, it's not like it's New York City, where we could do fucking everything."
"But it's Miami. Sunny Miami." Minho barks out a sharp laugh and you do an impeccable job of ignoring him. "Beach, sun, swamp. People come down here for vacation all the fucking time, there must be something to do."
He holds one hand up to the camera. "Everglades." One finger down. "Wynwood." Another finger. "Some nature estate." A third finger. "Beach." A fourth. And then, a long pause.
"Some other nature estate?" you offer.
Minho flaps his hand at the screen. It's his laptop screen, which you know because he's been glued to his phone for half of the FaceTime. "They're all the same and you know it."
Unfortunately, you do know it. There are only so many times you can walk Vizcaya or sit by the Deering Estate before they all end up coalescing into one big mush of ocean and grass in your brain. Beautiful the first few times. Pretty the next. Then just part of the landscape. Some might say you sound ungrateful, but you've lived here for eighteen damn years. You think you have a right to complain. Besides, how many times can you go to the beach before sand sticks itself so far up your ass that you decide you're never wandering into the ocean's depths again?
It's your turn to sigh this time. "So what are we doing tomorrow? Food? Boba?"
Minho's eating something now, so his voice comes out muffled. "What else is there to do?"
It takes too much effort to roll your eyes so you just stare at the ceiling. "Pick me up at twelve."
. . .
[12:36am] to: minnow just had the most terrifying moment of my life went to get water after everyone had gone to be didn't put on my house slippers bc it was supposed to be quick turned on lights ROACH NOT THREE FUCKING FEET AWAY FROM MY BARE FUCKING FOOT it's dead now but I have to throw it away 🤮 save me

[12:40am] from: minnow cool
[12:40am] to: minnow I GO THROUGH A LIFE THREATENING EXPERIENCE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY IS COOL
. . .
Seungmin is also there when you and Minho enter the Chipotle, so you end up sitting with him. He looks appropriately done with life, as befits a high school senior. "Oooo, skipping class," Minho singsongs before flicking him in the back of the head.
"Shut up," he mutters, slapping Minho's hand away. Or he would have if Minho wasn't so fast. "It's all useless now, I've already gotten into college."
You just laugh, dumping your Chipotle bowl in front of him. "Fail your AP exams and I disown you as my son," you warn cheerily. You nearly hit your head on one of the cheap fluorescent hanging lights as you sit down on the tall stool. There are fingerprints smeared all over the metal countertop and the cracked covering of the stool scratches your thighs. Maybe it was a mistake to wear shorts today. "What are you going to say if this goes on your permanent record?"
Seungmin gives you the stink eye. "Like they'll stop the valedictorian from graduating," he retorts. "And when the fuck did you two get back? I didn't realize you'd graduated already."
"Aww, missed us?" Minho beams, his eyes and mouth all turning into little slits that make him look far more threatening than he is. Actually, he looks like that meme of the cat staring straight at the camera that looks like it's smiling but its mouth is basically just a line with the slightest curvature at both ends. Felix would know what you're talking about. "We got back two weeks ago."
"And you didn't bother to tell us?" Seungmin sniffs.
"We did," Minho says. "You just don't check the group chat."
"You haven't even tried to congratulate us." You wipe away an imaginary tear.
He rolls his eyes, but you detect a little smile on his face that isn't just your own delusion. "Congrats, or whatever."
"I knew you cared!" you cheer, reaching over the table to give him a hug, despite half of the restaurant glaring at you while Seungmin attempts to fight you off. Minho just watches the whole scene unfold, his usual Cheshire Cat half smile stuck on his face.
Seungmin leaves soon after. You make a dramatic plea for him to stay, complete with a seated reenactment of Caesar's stabbing with Minho as Brutus and by proxy Seungmin, because Seungmin leaving is akin to Brutus stabbing Caesar who is you, or whatever. "No, my favorite child, don't go," you wail even as the workers start looking your way. "I'll buy you boba."
Minho snorts. "What are you, his parent?"
"What are you, a fucking loser?"
The offer of boba doesn't work because Seungmin has physics during his last period so he needs to be back in time to catch that class or his teacher will actually probably write him up (she's an evil old woman), and for all his skipping class Seungmin is still a mostly-goody-two-shoes who doesn't actually want anything horrific on his permanent record. So you and Minho finish your bowls alone with a side of healthy bickering, and then you walk back out into the disgusting heat to Minho's shitty little Toyota Corolla.
You almost don't catch the keys before they hit you in the face. "You drive," Minho says, opening the passenger side door.
"I'm not fucking driving." You drop the keys on his lap. "I only have a permit and I'm not on your stupid car's insurance."
"And I am an adult over twenty one with a license, and I trust that if you fuck up my car, I can throw you under the bus and say I was being kidnapped." He throws them back at your face and you screech. "You need to practice, so drive."
Minho wins because he's already in the passenger seat and the heat is sapping away your will to live, which includes your will to wrestle Minho out of that seat so you can take his place. So you end up in the driver's seat, sweating even more because the air conditioning in this car has been busted since last summer, and then you fudge your way out of the parking lot and down the road.
"If you say a word I will fucking kill you," you say.
Minho rolls his eyes and continues looking at his phone.
You manage to reach the boba shop in one piece. Minho orders his regular and you choose one of the new fruit teas on the menu. You find an empty round table with only minimal spillage in a corner of the shop and sit there in silence, sipping your drinks. You pull out your phone. Minho is still on his.
Ten minutes later, you crack. "This place fucking sucks."
"You just figured that out?" Minho mutters. He's chewing his straw as he obnoxiously slurps a boba pearl into his mouth. He's doing that on purpose just to annoy you but you rise to the bait anyway.
"Don't do that, it's disgusting." You put your phone down. "There's just nothing to fucking do. Almost makes me want to go back to college."
"You sure as hell weren't saying that right before graduation."
You debate the merits of slurping up a boba pearl just to take it out of your mouth and throw it at him. "Because I wasn't in buttfuck shit suburban Miami then."
Minho rolls his eyes. You do not throw the boba pearl, but only because you don't want sticky hands. Instead you lapse back into silence, the only sounds being Minho's occasional slurp and your ensuing complaint.
At two, your boba cup is empty and so is your will to live. You've seen the same Instagram reels at least twice, scrolled through Tumblr to oblivion, even poked at Sidechat before immediately closing the app after reading the first post you saw. You can't figure out the last three words on the New York Times Spelling Bee and you've already reached Genius status for the day so you have very little motivation to continue. "Let's go to Target," you say.
"Sure."
He makes you drive again and you yell at him the entire way because you're shit at directions so you have no idea how to get to Target despite having lived here for over a decade, and he won't stop looking at his phone the entire car ride there even while giving directions. You take a wrong left turn at some point and end up on the highway for five minutes. You blame him, obviously. Minho threatens to buy Starbucks just to pour on your head.
You don't buy Starbucks at Target because you just had boba. Minho picks up some vitamins, which he needs, and you find a weighted unicorn plushie, which you also need. He claims he doesn't need the matching dinosaur plushie but you dump it in his arms anyway and he carries it for an entire two hours until you get to checkout, which tells you everything you need to know. You snatch it out of his arms to pay for it and he threatens again to buy Starbucks to pour over your head. You tell him threats don't work the second time if he doesn't make good on them the first time. Unless you're Hyunjin, who's scared of everything.
You end up getting Starbucks anyway just before you leave because Chan and Changbin got back in town today and instead of being jet lagged like normal people they want to see everyone again, so you text the group chat and end up with nine orders including yours and Minho's. You refuse to drive this time. Minho mocks you the entire way to Changbin's house and you threaten to throw his plushie out the window.
Chan gives good hugs. So does Changbin. It doesn't stop you from making fun of them for being gym bros who don't miss a day to work out, not even during finals week. It also doesn't stop you from mocking Chan for his age.
"We graduated in the same year," he complains.
"But you got a Masters combined with your Bachelors," Minho says, grinning. "You're one degree ahead and you've been in school for five years instead of four so you're old."
Then Seungmin comes swinging through the door, four other gremlins following close behind, and you get to be called old by the five boys you practically raised ("You're not my dad!" "Vine's been dead for over ten years, shut the FUCK up.").
"What's with the plushies?" Felix eventually asks. He's already eyeing your unicorn. You hug it closer. Even though you love Felix, you will not cede that plushie to anyone.
"Went to Target," Minho says, carrying his dinosaur by the scruff of its neck. "Got plushies. And Starbucks." He leaves out the bit where you spent most of your two hours there snickering at the stupid holiday cards in the gift section and making fun of the Colleen Hoover books randomly displayed around the store, but it's implied.
You all traipse into Changbin's living room because he's the only one with Mario Kart and enough controllers for all of you. It devolves into a big screaming mess within fifteen minutes and someone spills Chan's coffee. No one notices at first but then Minho, mom friend supreme, yells for everyone to shut the fuck up and get towels to clean up the growing mess. Only Chan and Hyunjin respond, Chan because it's his coffee and Hyunjin because Minho is going to make good on his threat to air fry him someday, but Minho bars Chan from cleaning the mess because it's not his fault and it's his coffee so you end up going out to buy him a new one while Hyunjin sops up the spill. Mario Kart continues as usual.
After placing in the bottom half for almost every game in an hour, Jisung switches the game to Smash. After beating Changbin gets boring, you boot him the console and kick Jisung and Minho's collective ass instead. Then the sky is darkening, and you all remember that Changbin's rich kid community has a waterfront view, so Chan shuts off the TV mid-game and you all bicker your way out of the house and to the beach.
The sun is setting and for all that you dislike the beach, the view is nice. Pink and orange rays stream from the horizon and cast a soft glow on the scene that makes everyone look vaguely angelic, even though you all are the furthest from a group of angels you could ever be. You perch on a chunk of limestone and watch Seungmin shove Jisung into the water.
There is a very good reason why Changbin's neighbors hate you all.
The sky gets darker. Minho picks you up with much screaming and dumps you into the water, but on your feet so only your legs get wet. On principle you still have to get revenge so you dump a handful of water over his head and then narrowly escape getting dunked in the ocean by kicking him in the knee before he manages to grab you.
You end up on the rocks again, rough limestone pressing marks into your thighs as you watch the moon slowly pick its way into the sky. Chan and Felix are looking for shells even though this beach is more pebbles than sand, while Seungmin and Jeongin are egging on Hyunjin and Jisung splashing each other in the water. Changbin has spread himself out on the sand and almost looks asleep. Minho sits next to you on the rocks and puts his head on your shoulder. You complain for a bit about his sweaty hair but it's fine.
You're so focused on the sunset that you don't notice that Jisung and Hyunjin are no longer playing fuck-around-and-find-out in the water. You don't even notice that they've come around you from behind. All you do know is that you suddenly hear the click of an iPhone camera and then Jisung whooping behind you.
"The fuck—"
He's holding his phone and it's clear he took a photo of you and by proxy, a photo of Minho. You screech again, on principle, but it's too late. A ping from your phone tells you Jisung has sent the photo to the group chat.
"I'm going to kill you," you promise.
"It's a good photo!" Jisung insists, all the while backing away.
You look at Minho for backup. Instead, you watch him open the message and, after scrutinizing the photo with a nonplussed expression, save it. "What?" he says when he notices your scandalized glare. "It is a good photo."
You look at the picture. With the darkening sky, you and Minho look like shadows on the rock, haloed softly by the last rays of the sun sinking under the horizon. The ocean shimmers gently, waves lapping quietly against the shore. His head is on your shoulder and even though only your backs are in the shot, an air of contentment exudes from the scene. You don't even look sweaty.
Something unknown builds in your stomach, vaguely nostalgic, some kind of sad, but also soft and a little bit sweet. More good than bad but you feel a bit empty, for some reason. "I guess," is all you can answer, and Minho doesn't say anything more. But when you return to Changbin's house, still damp and noisy, you slip into the bathroom and save it to your phone, too.
It is a good photo, after all.

The kids graduate on a Wednesday morning, so Minho picks you up early. You're sitting at your old piano when he lets himself in, staring at some sheet music you used to be able to play five years ago. You can still play it, as you are currently finding out. Badly. With a lot of wrong notes.
You hit a wrong chord. Minho doesn't even flinch. "You're not dressed," he says.
You wave him off vaguely. "Later," you say, and play the right chord this time.
He doesn't say anything, just lies down on the couch and stares at the ceiling while you plink plunk your way through the rest of the piece. He claps. You get changed. He throws you the car keys. You wrestle him out the passenger seat as peacocks watch menacingly from the front lawn, then threaten to poke his eye out if he tries that again.
Chan and Changbin are already there, responsible adults that they are. You and Minho find them in the stands, the kids' parents sitting a couple of rows down. Chan warns you not to make a scene in front of the adults but he's the loudest when each of the boys walks across the stage, so you heckle him semi-quietly from all sides until the ceremony is over.
The four of you head to Minho's while the five new grads get lunch with their parents. Chan insists it isn't a good idea to day drink so you save the bottles of vodka for when the kids arrive, which they do towards the evening. You play Smash until they show up and you and Minho battle for first place fifteen times in a row.
Minho's parents are out of town but the cats are here, winding around all nine pairs of legs when the kids enter the house, newly graduated, caps and gowns abandoned. Food is ordered, shots are poured, and libations are made for each of the newly minted adults in the room with Chan overseeing everything because he doesn't drink. Half of you are underage but that half are all over eighteen, and you say if they're old enough to get drafted they're old enough to drink. Anyway, the youngest is Jeongin and he once sampled fifty different energy drinks in one sitting because Chan was in LA and he had no supervision. He's still alive. A shot or two won't kill him.
There's Smash. There's Mario Party. There's another round of shots and congratulations to the soon-to-be-college-freshmen, then Seungmin finds a bottle of wine and they pour it out for the college grads too. Your head starts feeling fuzzy halfway through the third round of Mario Kart so you lie down on the ground, and Soonie curls up on your chest so you are legally not allowed to move anymore.
The noise settles into a buzz in the back of your head. You yell when Jisung finally places third in Mario Kart and Minho drops a cat onto your head. Eventually, though, the yelling begins to peter out, and when Jeongin starts snoring around two in the morning, Chan calls it quits and begins arranging people around the couches to sleep.
You're not sleepy, though, so long after everyone else is passed out in various positions around the living room, you head into the kitchen for water. You're still at least tipsy so your reflexes don't do so well when footsteps sound behind you and you try to turn around to see who it is.
Minho, drunk as he is, catches you by the shoulder. "Just me," he mumbles. He only looks a little more alert than you.
You nod and finish your water but you don't feel like going back to the living room, where everyone is snoring and it smells like booze. Instead you go to the dining room and lie under the dining table. Minho joins you shortly after.
"What are we doing here?" he asks.
"Being drunk."
He seems to accept that as an answer. You stare at the bottom of his dining table. You've been to Minho's house so many times over the past few years, but somehow you've never seen the table from this angle. It captures your attention for a few minutes. Or maybe an hour. Time isn't real.
"I'm bored," Minho announces.
You look at him. "That's my line."
"And I stole it."
You huff. "Then what the fuck do you want to do?"
No Target. No boba. No beach, and none of that matters since there's no car because you're both shitfaced. It's some stupid hour of the morning, anyway.
Minho raises his hands. Splays out all his fingers against the underside of the table. "Never have I ever."
You stare. "That's so fucking stupid."
"You're so fucking stupid."
"Your mom's so fucking stupid."
"...You take that back."
"Fine." You relent only because Minho's mom is a lovely woman and even drunk, you already feel bad.
Minho grabs your arm and shoves your hand up next to his. "Never have I ever punched someone in the face."
It's not a hard game to play, even drunk. The rules aren't difficult and you and Minho know enough about each other that each time one of you says something, another finger goes down. Both of you have one finger left and your brains are starting to feel fuzzy not just with alcohol but with drowsiness too, so it takes a bit longer for Minho to think of something. Not that it stops you from being a little shit. "Hurry up."
"I can't fucking think," he complains.
"Then say something both of us have done," you snap, waving your last finger around. "Just hurry up."
"Fine." The air seems to change but you're too drunk to really pay attention to it. "Never have I ever been kissed." He folds his last finger.
You don't.
There's a beat of silence. Even without looking you can feel Minho's eyes roving from your still lifted finger down your arm and over to your face, where you are still resolutely staring at the dining table bottom and not back at him. "You've never been kissed," he says, almost incredulous.
You snort. You won the game, but the single finger you're still holding up looks really, really sad. "No need to rub it in."
He grabs your shoulder and that forces you to look at him. You blink. He doesn't say anything and for several seconds or seventy-two hours you don't either. "What the fuck do you want?" you eventually mumble.
"Just shut up," he says, and kisses you.
Minho seems cold but he's actually very warm, a fact that you are reminded of when he presses his lips to yours. Your hand falls limply, the lone finger forgotten as he pulls you to him. His eyes are closed and after a moment yours shut too. You don't know if you can look at him now. It's already too much just to feel.
You pull away for air. Minho holds up your hand and folds all fingers down. "Now you've been kissed," he says. You can't read his expression in the darkness.
"Why?"
Cat eyes seem to glow in the dark. "Because I've liked you since we met, and I think you like me too."
You like me too.
You roll the sentence around your mind, feeling the words bounce off your skull. Minho is mean. Kind. Annoying. Pretty. He knows your boba order and doesn't talk when you don't need to listen. His cats like you and you like them. He complains that you're boring but he hangs out with you all the time and he has never made you feel less than what you are, even when you play the piano shittily in front of him. You think of the photo Jisung took of you two last week and how you've made it your phone's home screen. You think of perfunctory complaints, a sunset, and his head on your shoulder with a weird feeling in your stomach.
You hold his hand. "I guess you're right."
He smiles. You can see it in the dark. And it's not the patented Cheshire Cat grin of evil and mischief; not really, at least. It's softer and sweeter and you recognize it as one of the sides of Minho that he rarely shares. Like when a cat allows you to rub its belly and purrs instead of scratching.
You end up in his room, still on the floor because the bed is too annoying to get to. He's lying on his back, dinosaur plushie under his head, and you're draped over his stomach. You can feel him breathing slowly, steadily, softly.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like if we never met?"
"...Could you just let me fucking sleep?"
"Be so for fucking real."
You can hear him rolling his eyes, but you can also hear him collecting his thoughts. "Well," he says, and you think he might be smiling, "Miami would be a lot more boring without you."
. . .
[9:14am] from: minnow before you try to overthink things yes I meant what I said last night tell chan if he wakes me up again I'll egg his car when he least expects it
. . .
Miami is stupid. There are peacocks and alligators and iguanas that fall out of trees in the winter. It's sunny all the fucking time and if it isn't it's pouring rain and in both cases there are mosquitoes out for your blood. Every time you walk outside it feels like you're melting into soup and the invasive ducks will give chase the moment you show weakness or fear. Cockroaches roam your home. So do weird millipedes and tiny lizards and idiot moths. Everything is hot and humid and stupid, and it's boring.
"I'm bored."
Minho rolls his eyes. "You are incredibly fucking annoying."
You pinch him. "Yeah, because I'm fucking bored."
"We could kiss."
Contemplative silence on your end.
"...Solid plan."
You hate this fucking place. It's boring and there's nothing to do but go to the beach or become one with the pavement. But there's Minho, and you'll never admit it if anyone asks, but you think that might be enough.
. . .

MORE FUCKING SAMAU LETS GOOOO
Gabriel feared having to tell Adrien he was going to die tomorrow. He'd never been a good father, and that was never by choice. After being told of the situation, Gabriel supposed he wasn't even Adrien's father at all. Despite being three feet taller, despite having white hair and wrinkles... the 'father' and 'son' had been born the very same day, completely separate from each other.
The lack of resemblance had given it away from the very start, he supposed.
They sit in the dark, because the powers that be tend to have more control when things are lit. Gabriel worked to create a meal for Adrien—a real meal, one with steak and potatoes and not a few flimsy pancakes topped with banana. Gabriel had found that meal to be a disgrace, even when he was making it. But his arms had moved on their own.
Adrien kept glancing between the meal and the stranger in front of him. He was surprised he had ever even tried to kill Gabriel, in all honestly—the rage felt ridiculous now. They're not even really related, just like how Adrien and Emilie weren't even really related. ...How does one really become related to another? Adrien cannot and will never be able to comprehend it. His brain isn't suited to conceptualize things like childbirth or marriage licenses—Nobody in his world was written that way.
Adrien pokes at his steak again, taking another piece into his mouth. It takes like sand. ...He doesn't know what sand tastes like, barely knows how it feels. Beaches, if he's ever been to one, feel the same as grass and wood and sidewalk concrete.
"Your cataclysm arm is getting worse," Adrien jokes, rather dryly.
Gabriel can't respond. It hurts that he'll eventually have to.
"...Well, I suppose I won't be worried about it for long. Tomorrow, I'm..."
Gabriel breathes in, unable to feel the air fill the hollow of his chest.
"...Something's wrapping up, Adrien. I'm going with it."
"You're leaving?"
"I suppose I have to," Gabriel laments. "You're giving up your ring tomorrow, right?"
Adrien tries to remember what he'd been told—Not by a voice or through written text, but merely by gut feelings.
"...Yes," he grimaces. He can't see his ring but knows that it's there. "Good riddance."
"All I know so far is that I will try and make the wish, and then I'm gone. Forever." To lighten his own spirits, Gabriel laughs and adds "Maybe they'll send me to New York, too. I'll keep an eye on Chloe while I'm there."
Adrien could only hope that Chloe was somewhere safe, 'New York' or not. As far as he knew, he'd never see her again. Even if her being his childhood friend meant nothing if he never had a childhood... he knew she must been alone there. He knew someone out there had been lying.
"Where's Nathalie?" Adrien asks, hoping to redirect the conversation.
"Asleep." Gabriel takes a bite of potato, chewing silently. "I told her earlier, don't worry. She has her own things to do tomorrow."
If anything, Nathalie is more of Adrien's mother than Emilie ever got the chance to be. Adrien's stomach turns and twists at the notion. He stabs the steak with his fork, using a little more force than he has to.
"Do you think it's possible to love someone you never really knew?"
Gabriel is caught off guard by the question, but he's been plagued by it ever since he learned the truth. Adrien asks it like he's asking someone his own age, which is right. Gabriel is no adult, Gabriel has no answers.
"I don't know, Adrien," he responds. His son—whatever that word even means—isn't happy with this answer.
"I just don't know why you didn't tell me," he grumbles. "Why you didn't ask from the very start if I'd be okay with any of this." It's not even close to what he was wondering, but Adrien pretends the contrary. "I just don't know why I wasn't allowed to be let in on any secret. Why was I chosen as the last person in the world to trust?"
Gabriel remembers having to watch himself akumatize his son not once, but twice. He wants to protest, tell this stranger in front of him that he wasn't even able to think about telling him anything, and that every step closer to death could only bring him comfort in the sense that he would no longer be forced to watch himself hurt and lie, because now he had to think and he had to know it was wrong, and...
"We've all been trapped in our decisions, Adrien," was all he could bring himself to say. "...I'm not really your father, nor will I ever be. But if I was, and if things were different..."
He can't see Adrien in the dark. Can't see himself.
"...I want to believe that I would've told you. At the very least, I would've told you."

One of the things that I'm really enjoying about Carrie is the way the narration is interrupted by characters' thoughts in brackets. I dont think it's something I've seen before much, if at all?
And I still feel like I'm not good at describing what I want to talk about so bear with me
Having those lines break up paragraphs (including breaking them mid-sentence) lets us zoom into the character's head more than putting their thoughts in a completely separate sentence along with a thought tag (what do you call dialogue tags when they come at the end of thoughts and not dialogue lol?)
And captures the little flashes of thought we all have where we contradict ourselves or have a little tangential thought before bringing ourselves back on track
These two really stuck out to me:
No one would be up here between now and the Ball; the light that shone on the mural and on the apron where the King and Queen would be crowned
(they'll get crowned all right)
were controlled from a box backstage.
Cant remember the actual terms for this but it's reasonable to assume that Billy isn't the one narrating the first part there but the author; cutting the paragraph in two with what is obviously his direct thoughts brings us into his head much faster than, say, this:
[...] the light that shone on the mural and on the apron where the King and Queen would be crowned were controlled from a box backstage. They'll get crowned all right, Billy thought.
And this time when Chris is thinking to herself about Billy getting the pig blood:
She has meant to make him wait until he had actually done something,
(but of course he did he got the blood)
but it had all begun to slip out of her hands, and it made her uneasy.
Like, that would not hit the same if it was written something like
But he did do something, she reminded herself, then quickly squashed that thought down.
^that takes way too long to convey the thought imo! Sticking it in the middle to interrupt her thought mid-sentence is so effective at showing how that thought popped up and got shoved aside, as well as keeping the focus on her unease at the lack of control she has over Billy.
And sure it can be jarring and I wouldnt say it works all the time but I also love how it lets Carrie's feelings run parallel to her sewing planning:
She lay
(i am not afraid not afraid of her)
on her bed with an arm thrown over her eyes. It was Saturday night. If she was to make the dress she had in mind, she would have to start tomorrow at the
(i'm not afraid momma)
latest. She had already bought the material at John's in Westover.
Because how often do we freak out while trying to think an unrelated thing through at the same time! I love this book

Now that I finally posted my fic, until the end of time, I wanted to make a separate post for the playlist as well!
I shared a couple of these songs for music monday, but I'm going to do a more in depth analysis of the entire playlist, listing each song in order, talking about which lyrics inspired me, and sharing which moments in the fic they reminded me of.
Listen to the full playlist here.
---
Overcome - Nothing But Thieves
This was the first song I connected to 4x18 back when I first started writing this fic back in June of last year. The playlist opens with it because it introduces the overarching theme of choosing love in life's most difficult moments.
Bringer of the calm, your arms wrapped around when the fever took Thought I was gone for good, you brought me back
But I've been thinkin', babe, maybe you're right When you said the pain weathers in time We're just waitin' for a change to follow We don't always get all that we want Redefine the pain to somethin' more And we shall overcome as we've done before
Stay - The People's Thieves
I see these lyrics as a sort of a back and forth between TK and Carlos.
The first verse is TK feeling helpless when he watches Carlos spiral. He knows that he has to wait for Carlos to come around. They'll leave the darkness when he's ready.
The second verse is Carlos understanding his own weakness. He knows he can't fight this alone even if he's too blinded by obsession to admit it. He needs TK (and Owen) to help him escape it.
The chorus is TK and Carlos comforting each other. TK was scared for Carlos, but Carlos came back to him as he always will. Carlos was lost, but he found his way back home to TK.
I can find a place where no one feels the rain We'll huddle while the storm goes Leave here when you say so Hang on I pray the day will come when you can feel the sun And wipe off all the marks of days spent in the dark love Hang on
I'm only just strong enough I'm slowly sinking through the ground below So hold me Just long enough to show me How to find my way back home
Stay When you feel afraid Where you are is where I'll always go When you've lost your way Where you are is where I'll always go
Sleep Deprivation - Chance Peña
This is where Carlos' head is at. He's lost within his grief and relentlessly persuing justice at the same time. He wants to do right by his family, but he can't do that without losing himself in the process. He still needs to realize that he is allowed to slow down to process his grief and take it one day at a time.
Lost and ambitious I've been on a mission I won't stop till I'm done I toss and turn almost every night I pray to God I'm doing right By all my family's wishes Lord knows I miss them Their love outshines the sun
So when I break down I list off the reasons I'm here and I'm still breathing I'm hanging on Try to break ground, make way for tomorrow I'll find a way through the sorrow One day at a time
Discoloration - Dawn Golden
This reminds of the scene where TK is trying to rationalize with Carlos, but Carlos isn't hearing him. He's too sucked into his obsession to see that he isn't alone.
You took my hand and brought me down in the morning And I was sitting waiting for the telephone to swallow me whole
And I watched your mouth moving like a tired machine trying to plead with me. Trying to swallow me whole
And the whites of your eyes blackened with a hardened decay And you talked to me in a broken voice
Fade In / Fade Out - Nothing More
I wrote an analysis on this song here, but I think these lyrics are the perfect encapsulation of Carlos and Gabriel's relationship. A lot of these thoughts would be haunting Carlos in his persuit of Gabriel's killer.
Son, I have watched you fade in You will watch me fade out When the grip leaves my hand I know you won't let me down
Go and find your way Leave me in your wake Always push through the pain And don't run away from change
We all get lost sometimes trying to find what we're looking for
Are You Really Okay? - Sleep Token
(cw: references of self harm)
This is a song about self harm from the outside perspective of a loved one. This is where TK really starts to realize that something is wrong with Carlos, and he doesn't know what to do. Carlos is engaging in his own version of self harm when he refuses to let himself sleep, eat, or grieve.
I raised you in the dark Caught you reading by the sunrise You wandered from the path Through the silence of the hillside
You woke me up one night Dripping crimson on the carpet I saw it in your eyes Cutting deeper than the scars could run
And don't you know I can see it in you even now And don't you know I want to help you but I don't know how And are you really okay?
I cannot fix your wounds this time I don't believe you when you tell me you are fine Please don't hurt yourself again
Promises I Can't Keep - Mike Shinoda
This is probably my favorite song on the entire playlist. In the aftermath of everything that went down, Carlos is in shock. He's upset, but he doesn't really have the chance to process the gravity of the situation until he gets home to TK. It's a feeling of relief mixed with that sinking feeling of realization when he comes back down to earth and his head is finally clear enough for him to see how bad it got, and how bad it almost became. He now has to accept the fact that he may not be able to keep his promise to Gabriel. He may not ever find his killer.
What's the difference between a loss and a forfeit I tried to make it better, but I made it more sick I tried to make it right, now awake at night I know reality was getting in the way
I used to think that I knew who I was Never saw it coming unglued I used to think that I knew who I was Now it's time to see if it's true
I had so much certainty Til that moment I lost control And I've tried but it never was up to me I've got no worse enemy Than the fear of what's still unknown And the time's come to realize there will be Promises I can't keep
I Am Not Who I Was - Chance Peña
Carlos has come to terms with the decisions that he made, and now he has to figure out where that leaves him. Is he still going to be a person TK can love? Is he going to keep going down a path of isolation, or is he going to hold on to what's most important to him? In the fic, he pleads with TK to not give up on him, and of course, this is never a question for TK.
You keep me steady on the ground When my head's lost in the clouds That spotlight, though it shines bright Could never drown you out I know it's hard when I'm away I'll just hope you don't lose faith 'Cause I told the truth when I said to you That I'll be back someday
So if I fly too far Will I still have a place inside your heart? And when you've seen what I've become Will you love me for who I am, not who I was?
Life's Gonna Kill You (If You Let It) - Man-Made Sunshine
TK approaches Carlos with more understanding than most people would have, because he's lost a parent too. He knows just how dark Carlos' thoughts are. And he has the experience to know what to expect. Carlos' grief is different from TK's, but having someone who loves him and who has been there is important when he hits his lowest point and can't see how he can drag himself out of it. TK isn't going to let Carlos get to a point where he can't come back.
You know I see your troubles from a continent away And they take me from my own And I know you feel your mind gets ugly every day And I know you know what it's like to feel insatiably alone
I won't let you get ill, I won't let you give in 'Cause this life will only kill you if you let it Don't you let me get ill, 'cause you know that I will My pain loves the company My life only kills me when I let it Yеah, life's gonna kill you if you let it
Back To One - O.A.R
This song is all about starting over. It's about changing your perspective when life becomes too overwhelming that you start to lose sight of the good things. When Carlos comes home and sees TK, his whole world who was right there waiting for him all long, he's reminded of the love he still has, and the happiness that he still has the ability to feel. He is not entirely lost. Looking back on his father's death isn't going to help him move forward. And moving forward isn't forgetting either. This song is an anthem of what it means to live through the worst moments of your life, and that's what Carlos is learning how to do. Live.
I see you there, but you don't look right You got a ten-mile stare in your eyes tonight Time ain't fair, like it used to be
We're all dressed up, nowhere to go We lost our way, about halfway home And we hurt the ones who get too close
Don't look back, you'll never find your way There's a million different people Who break the same way When everything has come undone We got to bring it back to one
I know forever always asks so much Don't you let it scare you, don't you lose your touch When your still waters start to run, bring it back to one
Can I Sleep In Your Arms - Willie Nelson
This is the song TK and Carlos were dancing to in the fic! I chose it for a couple reasons. I have my own (vague) hcs of the kind of music TK and Carlos like, and I do think there is some portion of Carlos' music taste that is dedicated to older stuff. I see him listening to old country loves songs like this one as a kid and imagining the day he'd find a love like that of his own. He found it with TK. He fought to hang on to it because this thing that he has with TK is so beautiful and precious, that he'll be damned if he ever lets it go.
In regards to the actual lyrics, this song is simply about how when you fall down, when you struggle, the person who loves you is always going to be right there by your side to help you get back on your feet. It's a song about healing, comfort in weakness, and devotion.
Can I sleep in your arms tonight, lady? It's so cold lying here all alone And I have no hold to hold on you And I assure you, I'll do you no wrong
Meet The Moonlight - Jack Johnson
This is a callback to the theme of choosing love. Carlos lost sight of it momentarily, and couldn't see a world where he could exist outside of this mission that he was on. But he can. He can choose to live and to pormise himself to TK forever. His dreams that he couldn't allow himself to have most of his life are still real and attainable. He can take control of his destiny.
Well, you can meet the moonlight Any night you really wanna It's waiting in your own backyard You can make the flame Meet the kindling, make the fire Don't let anybody say it's too hard
It's funny how blind dreams can be It seems like they look off too far But it's good to be right here It's good not to miss too many chances to follow love
Emerald Eyes - Anson Seabra
I didn't include any moments from the actual wedding in this fic because it would have defeated the purpose of the whole thing, but I do love this song for the wedding in particular. Carlos is looking at TK, this man who he loves with everything he has, who he's been through hell and back with - and he knows that this is meant to be. He knows their love is strong enough to survive anything. The road to their wedding wasn't easy, but now he's here and now he gets to take it all in. He gets to have forever with him.
A subtle breeze, it's you and me Chest to chest, no in between And every moment's better than the last Anything and everything That I could ever want and need Is standing right beside me in the grass
The birds they sang a melody My heart was keeping time and we Were dancing on the edge of something new Slow at first but still it seems That we'll go down in history As lovers from the start, just me and you
'Cause I've spent a thousand nights Lost in your emerald eyes Lost in a place where I know You can see my soul Make me lose track of time You and your emerald eyes Finally found a place that I can call my home
Tennessee Whiskey - Chris Stapleton
I had to include at least one song that had a somewhat sexy vibe, and this was it. This is the way it feels for TK and Carlos when they go home and give themselves over to each other as hubsands with a foundation of years of pining, building trust, heartache, and every obstacle in between. No matter what happens or where they go, the love that they have is never going to die.
But you rescued me from reachin' for the bottom And brought me back from being too far gone
You're as smooth As Tennessee whiskey You're as sweet As strawberry wine You're as warm As a glass of brandy And honey, I stay stoned on your love All the time
Baby I'm Yours - Arctic Monkeys
This is the "end credits" song. We revisit the theme of choosing to live. After this entire journey it all comes back to the love Carlos feels when he's with TK. He makes a promise not only to TK, but to himself, that no matter what happens or where life takes them, he will always remember this feeling.
Also, I saw that the fic title was a lyric in this song (this was on accident, I didn't come up with that title with any song in mind) and I knew I had to include it!
Baby, I'm yours And I'll be yours until the stars fall from the sky, Yours, until the rivers all run dry In other words, until I die
Baby, I'm yours And I'll be yours until the sun no longer shines, Yours, until the poets run out of rhyme In other words, until the end of time
I'm gonna stay right here by your side, Do my best to keep you satisfied Nothin' in the world could drive me away 'Cause every day, you'll hear me say Baby, I'm yours And I'll be yours until two and two is three, Yours, until the mountains crumble to the sea In other words, until eternity
Bonus: I ended up removing the song only because I didn't like how it affected the overall flow of the playlist. But an alternative "end credits" song is Adore by Prince. The lyric "until the end of time" also makes an appearance in that, and it's a song about loving someone and knowing that love will never go away.
Tagging some people who've read the fic in case y'all are interested in song analysis. I also just wanted to thank you all for being so wonderful and supportive and leaving such lovely comments. Y'all are the best. ♡
@herefortarlos @strandnreyes @sapphic--kiwi @paperstorm @firstprince-history-huh @literateowl @ironheartwriter @theghostofashton @nisbanisba
Also tagging some people who expressed interest in this fic. If you want something to listen to while you read, here you go!
@heartstringsduet @lightningboltreader @reyesstrand @emsprovisions @lemonlyman-dotcom @carlos-in-glasses @butchreyes @whatsintheboxmh
This can also double as an inspiration saturday tag. I should really participate in that more often, but I think this counts so consider yourselves tagged!

Mick always holding baby Aurora (i think i spelt her name wrong😭) during his meetings and interviews cause he loves watchign everyone melt
Note: it's Aurora, yes! I use Rora a lot, I noticed it last week that I use the nickname more than the actual name
"I can take her", Mick said as you tried to figure out the schedule, "ugh, they said I'd only be needed back next week, and no one ele can take her - I can cancel my appointment, though", you mumbled, grabbing your phone to call the clinic.
"Liebling, Y/N, hey! Hi", he smiled as he held your free hand, "Aurora has a father whose job isn't so strict to the point of not being allowed to take her with him, so I can take her tomorrow. You've been waiting for that appointment for a long time, who knows when they'll have openings again?", he reasoned, "Rora is coming with papa to the factory!", he smiled.
On the next morning, Mick and Aurora Schumacher walked into Brackley, and since he only told the people who would be in the meeting, the receptionist was the first to coo at the sight of the baby buggie he was pushing, "is it bring your baby to work day?", she smiled, "Rora is starting to learn her ways around motorsport, aren't you?", he said as she woke up, looking around and taking all of the building in.
"I just need to rock her to sleep, you can carry on", Mick said once the baby started fussing, getting up and walking along the room as they discussed something about the side pods, "I think this is good and we should test it out", one of the engineers said as he smiled down at the sight of Mick patting the baby's back to soothe her back to sleep, "I'll be able to test it out whenever you want then", Mick smiled.
.
"We have a little guest today, don't we?", Ted said as Mick showed up to their interview with his daughter on his hip. Now that she was a little bit older and you felt this interview would be safe, you allowed Mick to take the little girl with him, the noise cancelling headphones on her head protecting her ears as she smiled at the older man.
"Yes! Aurora wanted to see everyone, she was getting a little restless so we thought she could come and see you and the fans!", Mick said as he kissed her cheek, "well, it's a very cute guest and the fans seem to love it", he said as a few people walked by on the side of the paddock that wasn't separated by guards and the barriers.
"Well, do you think your father's car has winning potential, Miss Aurora?", he pretended, approaching the mic carefully to her as her hands started playing with it, "seems she is a little more interested in your mic", Mick smiled as Natalie approached them.
"Aurora, if your father always brings you to interviews, I won't be able to do anything because I'll just be distracted at your cuteness", Ted smiled as he saw her wave the mic at someone behind him, "it's Aurora Schumacher! Hi darling!", Natalie said as your daughter showed her the similar mic, "it's the same, isn't it? We're matching!".
(Thank you for submitting an ask ✨️)

oh my gods,,,,, SENSITIVE WEDNESDAY????????
Enid & Yoko are so used to antagonistic conversations with the seer (Yoko more than Enid) and so they're surprised when Wednesday starts tearing up whenever they make little jabs or teasing remarks like they used to and they both go in the complete opposite direction, loading her with praise and love and hugs and kisses, just to reassure their little raven again.
And ohhhh a raven plushie?!?!?!?
Anon, you have melted my heart!!! I CANNOT HANDLE THIS ANYMORE!!!
....
Anywayyyy Wednesday is absolutely inseparable from that damn raven plush and the only time she lets it out of her sight is when it needs to be cleaned.
So, one night, she's cuddled up in between Enid & Yoko and holding her raven tight when in the middle of the night, Wednesday wakes up to the feeling of it missing. Unable to find it anywhere, she begins panicking, breathing quick and shallow and tears flowing. Enid wakes up to the disturbance and sees Wednesday crying, "Little raven? What's wrong?"
"Can't find it! Need it need it need it, please Mommy! NEED IT!"
Enid's confused for a moment before noticing Yoko, also woken up by Wednesday's crying, standing by the side of the bed with the plush. She leans over the seer to take the plush and holds it in front of Wednesday, who grabs it back immediately.
Yoko crawls back into bed and the vampire and wolf both hold Wednesday tightly. None of them are able to sleep after all the excitement so they all take the day off tomorrow and spend it all cuddling.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
ORRR,,,,
Wednesday gets detention one day and the typical rule is to have backpacks confiscated for the duration of the detention, along with any belongings inside. And of course, the plush rests inside Wednesday's backpack so being separated from the bag is no good, no good at all.
A few times Wednesday tries to sneak over just to grab the raven plush, only to be stopped by a sharp clearing of the throat by Principal Weems, who is increasingly less impressed by the raven's insistent behavior, despite very well knowing the rules.
It all comes to a head when Larissa finally snaps, "Listen here, Miss Addams. You knew the rules and the punishment for breaking them and now you are facing the consequences for them. I haven't the faintest idea what in the world could be so important in that bag of yours, but if you do not remain sat in that chair for the remaining time left, I will have everything in that bag confiscated for the rest of the year, do I make myself crystal clear?"
And that shatters Wednesday, not only being snapped at when she's already in a very vulnerable state of mind but also the threat of losing her raven plush for the rest of the year?!? Wednesday immediately breaks down in full-body sobs, tears running like rivers down her face. Weems is taken aback for a moment before she enters panic mode. She tries everything she can think of, even giving Wednesday her backpack, but nothing settles her.
Weems is finally forced to do the only thing she can think of and calls Enid & Yoko to her office, hoping they'll be able to calm the raven down. Thankfully, they do. Though it does take some time. Once Wednesday is breathing evenly again and most of her tears are gone, Enid picks her up and they bring her back to the wolf and seer's shared dorm and spend the next few days together.
And after Wednesday's feeling better, Yoko and Enid go to Larissa's office to have..... words and practically tear the principal a new one... in multiple languages.... just to make sure the point sticks.
DO NOT MAKE WEDNESDAY CRY! EVER!!!!!
And if somehow, word spreads across campus of Wednesday Addams herself crying.... Well, no... it doesn't. 🙂
WHY DO YOU KEEP MAKING MY HEART MELT 😭😭😭😭😭
You know Yoko now has to remember not to tease Wednesday anymore. She definitely doesn’t want to see her beautiful Raven’s eyes filled with tears again. In fact if she ever thinks about trying to tease her she’ll just kiss her to stop herself from saying anything. Of course Wednesday doesn’t mind that at all and enjoys it every time ♥️
God baby Wednesday being super attached to that plushie is everything to me now ughh 😭😭🥺🥺 I just know Enid and Yoko seeing their babygirl cry like that makes their heart break. When Yoko gives her back the plushie and Wednesday takes it and cuddles with it she just kisses her all over and reassures her she won’t ever lose it again and god I love that these two love each other so much that they’re willing to stay home and take a day off just for their little rain cloud. She’s so much more important to them now.
Omg you know damn well Enid wolfed out at Weems. Telling her to never ever fuck with Wednesday or her plushie ever again. While Weems is TERRIFIED I imagine her being so taken back at the fact that not only does Wednesday have a girlfriend but TWO of them.
After all that Yoko and Enid come home they find Wednesday hugging her plushie really tight and smother her with love and kisses in bed giving Wednesday and overwhelming feeling. The good type of overwhelming ♥️♥️♥️
Now it’s just the four of them. Yoko, Enid, Wednesday and Wednesday’s plushie 🥺🥺♥️♥️ Baby Wednesday with her plushie all the time oh my god my HEART. 🥺♥️
Tumblr media
This is how Wednesday is holding her plushie in bed 🥰🥰🥰
