1958 was a strenuous year for Marilyn Monroe. After suffering a miscarriage in mid-1957, her mental health took a big hit, and grew severely depressed. She hadn’t worked in over a year [since The Prince and the Showgirl which was filmed in the fall of 1956] and her marriage to Arthur Miller was rocky; one day they were in love, and the next day they were screaming at each other. Marilyn still had hope to have children, and for her marriage to be saved; on top of that she was still hoping to be a good actress. While filming Some Like It Hot, Marilyn’s psyche was up and down. One evening, she accidentally took an over-dose of pills and was throwing up so badly her acting coach, Paula, took her to the hospital to recover. Arthur didn’t join her until half-way through filming, and by that time Marilyn learned she was pregnant. Marilyn was highly anxious about suffering a miscarriage, as her past taught her, and tried to do everything she could to take care of her baby inside of her. Director Billy Wilder, and co-star Tony Curtis didn’t help Marilyn’s insecurities, anxieties, or lateness. Wilder constantly yelled at her, and Curtis retreated further away from her, complaining about everything she did, and making her work strenuous hours even after knowing she was pregnant. By the end of filming, Wilder and Marilyn weren’t speaking and he spoke negatively about her in the press about her lateness and performance on set.

Eiko Ishioka, Japanese designer (born July 12, 1938, Tokyo, Japan—died Jan. 21, 2012, Tokyo), won accolades in the worlds of theatre, film, and advertising for her sensual and compelling designs; her many honours included an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and two Tony Award nominations. Ishioka began her career (1961) in the advertising division of the Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido and in the early 1970s opened her own advertising agency, where her avant-garde campaign for the boutique chain Parco made her a star in the design world. Her work as production and costume designer on the 1985 film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters won her an award (shared with the cinematographer and the composer) for best artistic contribution at the Cannes Festival, and she won an Academy Award in 1993 for her costume design for Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Her design for the Miles Davis album Tutu won her a Grammy Award for best album package in 1986, and she was nominated for the 1988 Tony Awards for set design and costume design for her work on the Broadway play M. Butterfly. Ishioka designed costumes for the musical Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark(opened 2011) and for the Cirque du Soleil show Verekai (2002). In addition, she was director of costume design of the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

I pride myself in making everything from the foundation all the way up till the styling and colour. That’s because I’m a real wig maker.

Marilyn during her brief trip to Korea ₍₁₉₅₄₎
❝It was cold and starting to snow. I was backstage in dungarees. Out front the show was on. I could hear music playing and a roar of voices trying to drown it out. An officer came backstage. He was excited. “You’ll have to go on ahead of schedule,” he said. “I don’t think we can hold them any longer. They’re throwing rocks on stage.”
The roar I’d been hearing was my name being yelled by the soldiers. I changed into my silk gown as quickly as I could. It had a low neckline and no sleeves. I felt worried all of a sudden about my material, not the Gershwin song but the others I was going to sing- ‘Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.’ It seemed like the wrong thing to say to soldiers in Korea, earning only soldiers’ pay. Then I remembered the dance I did after the song. It was a cute dance. I knew they would like it.❞
