Hypnosis Theory?
I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet in the tags, so I’ll drop this as an idea:
I don’t think Marvin’s intentions are bad. I’ve seen this post point out that Marvin looks like he’s raising his hand, possibly to cast a spell. This is something I can totally get behind.
Based on what we “know” from the previous videos, Jack has been in a “coma” or not himself in a way that’s related to his memory loss. In the final episode of Stories Untold, he awakes after a rough night of sleep and says that infamous “I remember what he did to me”
Both Stories Untold and the video released today of Try To Fall Asleep have plots that deal with the recovery of memories specifically after a traumatic event in the protagonist’s lives.
It’s no surprise that this seems to parallel what Jack is hinting at. He was clearly traumatized by something “they” did to him, and until this point has either been forced to forget, or forgotten as a coping mechanism.
It feels like a real possibility that Marvin may have put Jack to sleep through hypnotism, but not for malicious purposes. Instead, I think he did it to help Jack recover his memories.
Magicians sometimes use hypnotism and suggestion in their acts. And regardless of the science behind it, Hypnotism has a widespread reputation as something that can bring back lost or hidden memories.
Try To Fall Asleep has the premise of healing brain damage through sleep/rest, and also seems to suggest that the “healing” has to do with remembering and properly dealing with the trauma. Jack may have “woken up” but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t still need sleep. He’s awake and now he needs to heal.
Marvin may be using his skill in Hypnosis and the power of suggestion to help Jack actually sleep, and remember in a more controlled manner. The little robot friend could represent that he is not alone, there is someone there to guide him and tell him what he should do, and what to expect (i.e. he needs a certain amount of sleep, he might see hallucinations, it won’t always be a great experience but its still important).
Marvin’s image flashing in between the “flee” sections might have something to do with Jack’s bodily reaction. Try To Fall Asleep monitors the player’s stress levels. Schneep might have something similar hooked to Jack, and I think those moments where he’s suddenly having to run from a monster would definitely spike his stress levels. These could be blocks in his memory that he used to help himself cope, and he has to overcome them by successfully escaping what wants to hold him back. But Marvin may show himself in those moments because he’s worried about Jack, he doesn’t want to push him too far, and if Marvin hypnotized him, he would be the one who could reach him in some way.
**It’s worth noting that since there seems to be the looming idea that time is messed up, this may be taking place before the end of Untold Stories. This is further supported by that fact that Jack seems to be wearing the “Chase Shirt” in the Try To Fall Asleep video, which he also wore a few days ago in the Instagram pic with Marvin’s mask in the background. This suggests that this video was recorded much earlier than when it was posted. It’s possible that Marvin might have hypnotized Jack to help him regain his memories, and the end of Untold Stories is him waking from one of Marvin’s induced sleeps after having regained them.
**I don’t really know how JJ fits into this scenario though. His silhouette makes a single appearance in the flashes as well. It seems to be taken from the only Power Hour video he was in, and not from new material (though i cant be 100% certain). Maybe he was also part of mixed memories, or maybe he was there for support at the time Jack went under. It’s hard to know.
Overall, I personally don’t subscribe to the idea of Marvin or any of the egos being evil or working with Anti. I think their presence is weaker than Anti’s, but together they’re stronger. greerroseimagines made a great post talking about how the egos each represent a piece of Jack. They may be less apparent than Anti. Fear can be all-consuming, but it is not all of what makes you. Separated, they are weak, but together they make a whole, and that includes Anti. The others keep Anti in check. Despite the damage Anti can do, he is still an important part of Jack. I think the other egos are trying to restore that balance. Anti has thrown them apart and made things chaotic, and now they’re coming back to fill in their places. And they do this using the skills/powers/beliefs that they have.
