Nem biztos, hogy nekem kellene megírnom ezt a cikket. Most nem arra gondolok, hogy az utóbbi hat bejegyzést is én írtam, így az a veszély fenyeget, hogy túlexponálom magamat. Inkább arról van szó, hogy a nagy nevek ellenére kezdettől fogva szkeptikusan álltam ehhez a trióhoz. Már azon is meglepődtem, hogy a 2013-as debütáció után lett folytatás (2015), azt viszont végképp nem látom be, hogy nyolc hosszú év elteltével mi késztette őket arra, hogy visszatérjenek, mint a névadó háziállat, a saját – hogy is mondjam csak – maradékukhoz. Ez ugyan kicsit szigorúan hangzik, de nem rossz hasonlat, jóllehet abszolút nem áll szándékomban megsérteni sem a zenészeket, sem a rajongókat.

Abban szerintem mindenki egyetért, hogy a három muzsikus: Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehen és Richie Kotzen külön-külön is legendás művész, a saját hangszerének világraszóló artistája. Többen még abban is egyetértenek majd velem, hogy Portnoy zenészként, zenei producerként majdnem tévedhetetlen, bár csak majdnem. Elég itt a Metal Allegiance vagy a BPMD nevű projektekre gondolnunk. Abban a tekintetben viszont valószínűleg csak kevés helyeslőre találok, hogy a The Winery Dogs szerintem már az indulásnál kisiklott. Nevezetesen akkor, amikor az eredetileg ideszánt gitáros/énekes, John Sykes nemet mondott, pontosabban elszabotálta az együttes beindulását.

Mint tudjuk, így – mintegy utógondolatként – került a levesbe Richie Kotzen, aki ugyan nagyszerű gitáros (bár a Mike Varney-féle shredder generációból nekem az egyik legkevésbé szimpatikus jelenség), termékeny dalszerző és igen jó torkú énekes, de bizonyos tekintetben épp olyan, mint Glenn Hughes: azaz bárhol megjelenik, ott azonnal rátelepszik a zenére, minden elkezd azonnal beazonosíthatóan, hamisítatlanul glenhjúzos – jelen esetben ricsikoccenes – lenni. Garantálom, hogy John Sykes-szal ez az egész teljesen másképpen szólt volna, mint ahogy azt is, hogy az a trió sokkal közelebb állt volna a szívemhez! Ez tehát itt az első nagy hendikep!

A második hendikep az, hogy bármennyire tisztelem és szeretem Portnoyt és Sheehent zenészként, egyikőjük stílusa sem illeszkedik jól – az egyik ezért, a másik azért – ehhez a funkys blues rockhoz. Talán inkább úgy kellene fogalmaznom, hogy a Kotzen-féle mindent átható funkys blues rock nem illeszkedik az egyébként külön-külön és együtt is frenetikus ritmusszekcióhoz. Erre gondoltam, amikor azt mondtam, hogy már a kezdetek kezdetén gellert kapott ez a projekt. Meggyőződésem, hogy a Mother Head’s Family Reunion és a Forty Deuce sokkal hitelesebb inkarnációi annak, amit Kotzen minden ízében képvisel és a jellegzetes stílusához is jobban illenek azok a zenészek. Abba már bele sem kezdek, hogy nekem attól kezdve még kevésbé fekszik Kotzen stílusa, hogy átállt az ujjal pengetésre. Na de ez már tényleg a kákán is csomót esete…

Mindannak ellenére, amit eddig leírtam, a The Winery Dogs nyilván működik valamilyen szinten: a zenészek briliánsak, a dalok – ha nem is mindegyik – abszolút élvezhetőek. Erre az albumra bőven volt alkalmuk rápihenni, ennek ellenére egyáltalán nem érzem kiemelkedőnek a két korábbi kiadványhoz képest, a középrész (a “Breakthrough”-tól a “Stars”-ig) például nekem kimondottan uncsi, a “Gaslight” kérkedő kapkodása pedig irritál (bár koncerteken biztos jól működik). Nem kérdés, hogy akadnak azért határozottan jó pillanatok is. A klipes “Xanadu” igazi Mother Head’s Family Reunion és Forty Deuce hangulatot áraszt, a “The Vengeance” már-már slágergyanús, a “Pharaoh” és a “The Red Wine” pedig kihozzák a legjobbat ebből a fölállásból. Aki eddig is szerette őket, elégedett lesz, aki pedig korábban sem volt oda értük, nem lesz rajongóvá.
