Oh, and if anyone is like "well why should we lend anyone money if they're just gonna be lazy and wait it out til the loan is forgiven??" the Bible has an answer for that too!
7 If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. 8 Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land. (NIV Version, Deuteronomy 15:7-11)
Showing ill will toward the needy is a sin :) failing to help bc you think you won't make your money back is a sin :) hope this helps :)
((Tbh I think an underrated part of this passage is the part of verse 11 where it says there will always be poor people and then commands you to give anyway. The world is complicated and God doesn't give a shit about your ideas of "welfare dependency" or worries that theyll "misuse" what you gave. You are specifically NOT to grow callous and brush off poverty as "just the way the world is", you are to acknowledge that this is the way the world is and then be generous anyway.))
#Even more interesting is that this bit follows from verse 4 where it says 'However#there need be no poor people among you#for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance#he will richly bless you.'#These verses acknowledge that there is theoretical abundance enough to solve poverty#then pivots to say poverty is inevitable#then follows that up with 'give to the poor anyway.'#which is honestly... accurate#we've got enough to go around but between systemic shit and people being people (honorogatory) there's always going to be people in need#there's no perfect fix that fixes things forever in a way no one can ever break#so we do the endless work of giving generously because its the right fucking thing to do#anyway im no christian anymore but i forgot how much fun it is to analyze bible verses sometimes#my additions#christianity#conservatives#the bible
