his first mission was in Egypt, where he spent three months. he has quite a few souvenirs that he kept for “conversation pieces”, one being a set of carved figures including Anubis, Osiris, Horus, and Bastet. another is a scarab made of gold that had been gifted to him. he would have two more missions in Egypt during his life.

after his time in Egypt, he travelled to America and spent almost two years there working on missions. while there, he’d helped track a thunderbird and he’s never forgotten about it

having grown up in a middle-class family, Grant had learned early on how to live within his means, which carried into his adult life

Todo iba de maravillas hasta que una tarde, Jules llegó de su clase de música y notó algo extraño: el auto de su madre no estaba, su madre tampoco, solo su padre sentado en la mesa del comedor con una botella de whiskey a medio terminar. Es hasta el día de hoy que no entiende si ella nunca notó la infelicidad de su madre o si simplemente era una gran mentirosa. Su madre se marchó, dejando una carta pidiendo disculpas pero sin número de contacto. Muchos años después se la cruzó en Baton Rouge, iba con dos niños de no más de siete años y un señor que le sostenía la mano.

A partir de la ida de su madre las cosas desbarrancaron. Su padre comenzó a beber y a jugar. Lo único bueno en la vida de Jules era Teddy, él era el único que podía sacarle una sonrisa, el único que la consolaba cuando lloraba y le daba ánimos para seguir adelante. Solo un año más y ella se iría a la universidad. El año pasó y cuando el momento llegó, la vida – o mejor dicho su padre – le jugó una mala pasada: el dinero que habían estado ahorrando para pagar la universidad no estaba, su padre se lo jugó en una noche y nunca lo pudo recuperar. Era demasiado tarde para pedir una beca y su mundo se vino abajo, otra vez.

Sin embargo, salió adelante. Tomó todo tipo de trabajos, desde niñera hasta camarera y vendedora y con lo que pudo ahorrar, se mudó sola a un pequeño departamento en el centro. Varios años más tarde, conoció a Francis. Francis es un contador que la conquistó solo por ser perseverante, o eso es lo que él dice. En realidad, el corazón de Julia siempre tuvo dueño, desde el momento en que lo conoció, su corazón perteneció a un solo hombre: Theodore Montgomery. #31 – The Horrors of our Past – Part 3 – Ocular Miss, The Quirk Murder Mystery

It was March of 1902. A little over a year since Winston Churchill made his maiden speech. A few months since Theodore Roosevelt renamed the executive mansion as the white house. Three months since the first Nobel prize in physics was awarded to Wilhelm Rontgen for his invention of the x-ray. And, just around the time when many Canadian soldiers were returning from fighting in the Boer war. But James Quirk wasn’t one of those returning soldiers. 

 At 42 years of age, James was an extroverted, enthralling, and energic moustached gentlemen enjoying his retirement from professional completive foot-racing. And, although he enjoyed some fame in Canada and the United States, he appreciated his time since being on the racing circuit. James went into the hotel business with long-time associate John Toole, and Fred Westbrook, once a champion cyclist, was married to a woman who was “wealthy in her own right” and had two young daughters.

He and John had purchased and ran a hotel in downtown Brantford Ontario. The hotel was located on Dalhousie Street, just across from the Market and was aptly named Commercial Hotel. Adjoined to the side of the three-story brick building, whose architecture reflected the typical 19th-century style in which it was built, was a stable where the equines in the traveler’s group would stay. It was also where James would keep his prized gaming chickens, that he used in various coq fights.

You see, James liked to gamble. And, sometimes, this would lead him into a bit of trouble, and as a result, he likely made a few enemies along the way. In his younger years, he seemed to have made a habit of swindling some “honest” folks of their “hard-earned” money with long-time fellow racer Billy Boyd. [...]
