BLACK HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 4 OF 6 Friday, February 10, 2023
"When the slaves finished, they had stripped the fields of their color. It was a magnificent operation, from seed to bale, but not one of them could be prideful of their labor. It had been stolen from them. Bled from them." - Colson Whitehead, The Underground Railroad

Was The Day That The Great & Legendary Black Woman In History Made Her Life Become A Historical Legend In Time Tor All Black People Who Were Slaves & Became Free People In A World That Wanted Them To Stay The Way They Are.
But This Proud African-American Woman. Showed Them The Way To Freedom
She was an American abolitionist and social activist. Born into chattel slavery, She escaped and subsequently made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 similarly-enslaved people, including family and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. During the American Civil War, she served as an armed scout and spy for the Union Army. In her later years, She was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage.
Born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, She was beaten and whipped by various slaveholders as a child. Early in life, she suffered a traumatic head wound when an irate enslaver threw a heavy metal weight, intending to hit another enslaved person, but hit her instead. The injury caused dizziness, pain, and spells of hypersomnia, which occurred throughout her life. After her injury, She began experiencing strange visions and vivid dreams, which she ascribed to premonitions from God. These experiences, combined with her Methodist upbringing, led her to become devoutly religious.
In 1849, She escaped to Philadelphia, only to return to Maryland to rescue her family soon after. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other enslaved people to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Her Name (or "Moses", as she was called) "never lost a passenger". After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide escapees farther north into British North America (Canada), and helped newly freed people find work. She met John Brown in 1858, and helped him plan and recruit supporters for his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry.
When the Civil War began, She worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. The first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people. After the war, she retired to the family home on property she had purchased in 1859 in Auburn, New York, where she cared for her aging parents. She was active in the women's suffrage movement until illness overtook her, and she had to be admitted to a home for elderly African Americans that she had helped to establish years earlier. She became an icon of courage and freedom.
Happy Birthday 🎂 To The Greatest Black Woman / Freedom Fighter In History That Made Her Story Become Legend

Just finished reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, a dark and bleak read, wonderfully written and crushing, won't leave you indifferent. I love when the university library gives away free books. Got some awesome works today that I may be able to use in the future. Except for the third book. I was so excited to find a book about one of my favorite times in history to study. Even better — it was originally published in 1898! I’m excited to read it when I’m on break! #winterreadinglist #lgbtacademiclit #theundergroundrailroad #futurethesissources #cpp https://www.instagram.com/p/B4l8sAClyxes4HYd0G_jMXYJ3dnr8HmtnjQRcc0/?igshid=cgozgim49iz2

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Such a strange mix of facts and fiction. I feel that depicting Underground Railroad as actual tracks and locomotive is a great disservice to amazing people who were conductors of the Underground Railroad. Instead of enriching the book with imagination and magic, it cheapened the experience for me. It did make me want to read more books about that era, so there is that. #sabinareads #reading2019 #books #theundergroundrailroad https://www.instagram.com/p/Bti2IlJhhLJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1x77b4xueby2k

You might be putting this one off. You might be thinking it’ll be too difficult, or that you’ve seen a movie just like it recently. Don’t make that mistake, because you’ve never seen anything like this limited series, nothing so extraordinary and fierce and heartbreaking and VITAL. This limited series (and the Colson Whitehead book it’s based on) infuses the story with just enough magical realism to deepen a story we thought we already knew, make it strange and newly-vivid. They took the entirety of Black experience throughout American history and somehow accordioned it into one woman’s flight for freedom. The acting is crazy good, the filmmaking ( Barry Jenkins directed) is just on another level—so gorgeous and layered, down to the lighting and haunting sound design. There is brutality depicted here, yes, but also connection, joy, resilience and humanity. Don’t miss this cinematic masterpiece. @amazonprimevideo #theundergroundrailroad #juneteenth #barryjenkins #thusombedu @thuso.mbedu @bandrybarry @colsonwhitehead https://www.instagram.com/p/CQRJMEHJHLa/?utm_medium=tumblr

The Underground Railroad who started it? Isaac T. Hopper In the early 1800s, Quaker abolitionist Isaac T. Hopper set up a network in Philadelphia that helped enslaved people on the run. At the same time, Quakers in North Carolina established abolitionist groups that laid the groundwork for routes and shelters for escapees. #isaacthopper #theundergroundrailroad #primevideo #amazonprime https://www.instagram.com/p/CPBfO_SFIeVREoGc_o7xd6O0u5tq9HckwDWbuI0/?utm_medium=tumblr
