@thegrape-gatsby replied to your post ā€œWhen you are writing a story and refer to a character by a physical...ā€
What is an example of a good time to use it?
Hereā€™s an example from Corsair by Clive Cussler and Jack Du Brul. I picked it simply because I recently read the book.
Alana crawled from his side and approached Linda.Ā ā€œHeā€™s working on something. Iā€™ve got it.ā€
ā€œStay low,ā€ Linda cautioned, impressed with the archaeologistā€™s courage.
This book is a fast-paced action/adventure story with a large number of characters spread over many locations. That makes it challenging for the reader to remember important details about the characters without some occasional reminders.Ā
In the scene that the quoted example comes from, the heroes are trying to figure out how to escape from a hidden cavern after narrowly beating a group of terrorists in a gunfight. Linda and the men with her have training and experience with this sort of adventure, but Alana is just an archaeologist who, through a series of unfortunate events, has found herself mixed up in all this danger.Ā
Referring to Alana by her profession provides a quick reminder that she is far from her element and therefore deserves respect for how well sheā€™s handling the situation.Ā With all the recent excitement in the story, it would be easy to forget about her past and wonder why Linda is so impressed with Alana when the others have been doing more exciting, action-hero type things. So, ā€œthe archaeologistā€ is a better choice than just ā€œAlana.ā€ Itā€™s also a better choice than taking the time to explain everything I just did about her. It nudges the readerā€™s focus in the right direction rather than spelling everything out.Ā
Epithets can be very useful, but they should be used carefully and purposefully.

Human behavior: deception
All humans we have studied have something in common: a tendency and a skill for deception. For a pack species they are very skilled at manufacturing body language, facial expression, and verbiage to deceive those around them.
This trait has proven to be difficult for other species of the Council to understand and work with as humans will employ this skill in many circumstances.
For instance humans have been known to use deception when they are injured, hiding this from medics and commanding officers which is foolhardy and can prove fatal if it is not discovered quickly. Humans are currently the only known species that will reject medical attention at the risk of their own lives. This is theorized to be because their bodies can withstand great trauma and survive, making them unable to properly gauge risk.
Humans also use this trait to enjoy games of deception such as poker. It is not advised that any species take a human up on the offer of being taught to play this specific game.
Editor's note: Officers and privates of the United Federation Fleet are reminded that losing all of their pay to humans in games of deception is not grounds for pay advance or disciplinary action against the human.
