"The Sensuality of Stones" by Chris Wroblewski

“In the catalogue of metaphors, the stone stands for lifelessness: people are turned into stones when they have risen above the gods, done evil or seen something they would not have wanted to see. Petrification usually follows a violent shock, an overpowering feeling; it can be redemption.

And yet there is a stifled, secret life resting in the stone that evokes imaginings: imaginings of what the stone was like before it was condemned to being stone. They arouse fantasies of power, of forcing feeling from the insensate, of bringing the dead to life like Pygmalion (and the living dead would then be as beautiful as nothing else). Why don't you live? Live! cried a child to a statue in the park. Already in him was the awareness of the ability to animate, if only he wanted to strongly enough, and the vague feeling that the soul of the other person might in the end be only his own creation.

Stone is also a metaphor for dead feelings: stony hearts, petrified faces. Eros and stone thus seem alien to each other. And yet: Eros is the revival of what seemed loveless, that is, lifeless. The gaze of the lover brings to life, softens the hard and rounds the edges. In the gaze of photographer Chris Wroblewski, stones become bodies, with sensual curves and abysses, bodies that draw in themselves, into themselves, into mild moistness.

In the process of such anthropomorphisation, a new field of narcissistic mirroring opens up: the most inaccessible, it belongs to us too. (In one story, a man who is the only survivor of the nuclear catastrophe tries to sleep with his stone in order to pass on human genes). Stones like naked bodies: panerotism - or the opposite, the admission of hopeless relationshiplessness. Between the poles of blind self-absorption and sinking into the cosmos lies the span of what feeling is capable of.”
