University of South Carolina basketball star Ashlyn Watkins has been arrested on assault, battery, and kidnapping charges.

Watkins is accused of assaulting the unidentified victim by “forcefully grabbing her face, pulling her arms and pushing” her, according to a warrant filed by the University of South Carolina Police Department and obtained by The Independent.

The warrant says that Watkins picked up the victim against her will and “grabbed the victim’s head and forced her to walk down the hall, thus controlling her movement while preventing her from leaving.” After grappling with the basketball player, the victim managed to escape and pulled a fire alarm which triggered the police and fire response, the warrant states. The incident was captured on surveillance cameras, USC police confirmed.

The victims’ injuries were non life-threatening.

Watkins was taken into custody in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday where she allegedly confessed to the incident.

Richland County online judicial records revealed that Watkins received a $30,000 personal recognizance grant which meant that she did not have to pay for her release as a condition of the bond.

She has been ordered not to have any direct or indirect contact with the victim, maintaining at least 1,000 feet from her home, work, school and place of worship. Watkins will be allowed to leave the state on travel grounds for basketball games and practices.

A women’s basketball spokesperson told TheAssociated Press that the school was aware of Watkins’s arrest and was continuing efforts to gather information.

Watkins’s attorney Todd Rutherford told News19 that the incident was a misunderstanding.

“We believe once everybody has a full grasp of what happened, this will end up being a misunderstanding,” he said.

“What we know for certain is that Ashlyn did not assault anyone and she did not kidnap anyone.”

She is expected to appear in court on October 25.

Watkins has been hailed as a rising star in women’s basketball, standing 6ft 3in tall and scoring an average 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Gamecocks last season.

The University of South Carolina became the first undefeated national champions since 2016, with Watkins leading with 91 blocks – she is the first player in program history to dunk while playing during her freshman season.

The star’s last social media post on X included a promotional video promoting a tax platform in March.

Several hundred starving, sick or injured brown pelicans have turned up on beaches throughout California over the past few weeks, with wildlife officials still unable to pinpoint the cause of what they are calling a “crisis.”

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and other non-governmental partners, have been working to collect and rehabilitate the birds, many of which are anemic, dehydrated and underweight.

“They’re in really poor physical shape. They’re starving, and they haven’t gotten enough nutrition,” Russ Curtis, a spokesperson for the nonprofit organization International Bird Rescue, which is helping in the rescue efforts, tells KQED’s Annelise Finney.

“When there’s not the fishing stock that they can find, they take chances around fishing piers and fishing boats and places where there are people with fishing tackle,” Curtis says, explaining that some pelicans have been hurt by fishing hooks and lines they encounter near the shore.

As of this week, the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center (WWCC) in Huntington Beach and Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network have admitted more than 100 pelicans each, while International Bird Rescue has taken 260 pelicans into its two California facilities—one in Los Angeles County, and one in the San Francisco Bay Area, reports Cheri Carlson of the Ventura County Star.

Other birds have been found dead on beaches. Necropsies have revealed starvation as their cause of death, which has puzzled scientists. Populations of fish that pelican forage, by all accounts, remain abundant off the Pacific coast.

We also know that there’s supposedly plenty of anchovies and their food out there in the ocean, so we don’t really know why they are not able to forage yet,” Debbie McGuire, executive director of the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, tells Eugene Garcia of theAssociated Press.

Brown pelicans are known to spend their non-breeding months throughout the entirety of the state’s coastline, and the sick birds have been found in a variety of locations. In northern California, most birds have been rescued around Monterey and Santa Cruz, while those in southern California have been found by officials in a variety of traditional and non-traditional habitats. Two dozen pelicans were found on Newport Beach and dozens more were picked up around Huntington Beach—but sick birds have also been identified in a lake at SoFi stadium, the home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, and at a Malibu fire station, the Guardian’sDani Anguiano reports.In rescue efforts, the first step is to support the birds with warmth. “The great news is the vast majority are recovering if we can get them through those first couple of critical hours of hypothermia,” Elizabeth Wood, the WWCC’s veterinarian and medical director, says in a video posted to Facebook.

Longterm Mortality among Chronic Complex Patients with polypharmacy: Results of Community- Based Prospective Study

Introduction: The polypharmacy is common in ambulatory care, hospital and nursing home patients. Over the last 20-30 years, problems relatedto aging, multi morbidity, and polypharmacy have become a prominent issue in global healthcare. In the developed countries around 3-4% of the peoplecould be identified as chronic complex patient and they are increasingly at risk of polypharmacy. The main objective of this study we as to evaluate theassociation of polypharmacy and mortality risk. Materials and Methods: We carried out a multicenter and prospective cohort study of mortality incidence from 01.01.2013 to 30.09.2016 among825 adult patients registered in the electronic health record of Primary Care as Chronic Complex Outpatient. To predict hazard ratios, mean survivaltime, and survival probabilities used a multivariate Cox regression.

I knew how much so-called "Rad-Fems" hated trans people. That was extremely obvious. But the more I read of their content the more I realize how deeply and viscerally they hate bisexuals. They hate bisexuality and especially bisexual women so much. Which makes sense, the history of their movement involves a lot of shaming bisexuals but the hatred is so much more intense than I previously imagined. And it's not individuals. It's foundational to their beliefs.
