It's Saturday which means...NEW EPISODE: Episode 11: It’s one of the most famous photos ever: the girl on the National Geographic cover with the bright green eyes. But not many know how angry she was in the photo or why she was so angry. After all, the photographer broke some cultural norms to get this important shot.
But this expose is more about the search for The Afghan Girl and how it took 18 years to find her. Sophisticated iris scans, weeding out false claims and the people claiming to be her, visiting various countries…it was an exhaustive search. But they did it. Here’s how they found her and what became of the famous Afghan Girl from that National Geographic cover.
This is the eleventh episode in a series of episodes that’ll drop every Saturday throughout 2024.

Sharbat Gula - The haunting photo of a green-eyed, Afghan girl named Sharbat Gula, taken by Steve McCurry in a refugee camp in Pakistan, in December 1984. This was one of National Geographic magazine's most famous covers. Today she is 46 years old and despite her “fame” she still faces harsh reality of being a woman in a part of the world which deems human rights as a privilege for men. This extraordinary image is etched in the psyche of society ... I often wondered if it is just a matter of appearance, as those very unique eyes exceed the “norm” and therefore tell her story more effectively - is that the case? Does it matter? ❤️ #nationalgeographic #theafghangirl #stevemccury #iconic #photo #photoreference #coverphoto #afghanistan #war #greeneyes #nickcolport #portrait #art #korimlizsharbatgulq #korimliztheafghangirl

The Rules:
Rule 1: Write down the rules.
Rule 2: Answer the questions from the person who tagged you.
Rule 3: Make up 11 new questions and tag 11 people.
Rule 4: Write the people to tell them you tagged them.
Rule 5: Write the person who tagged you to tell them you answered the questions.
I was tagged by lovely and sweet definitelyfantasy, thank you! :D
1. What is one thing authors do in their books that you hate? (For example: making the female lead a Mary Sue)
I hate extreme foreshadowing, like when it's a romance and one of the characters is playing Romeo and Juliet, or there's a premonitory dream at the start that is obviously related to the last chapter of the book, or whatever it is (the clearer the foreshadowing, the worse, especially in long-term, not chapter-to-chapter cases). Also especial mention to changing POVs after a long time, and Mary Sues. And to books set in another country, or historic periods, that are full of inaccuracies. Oh my, these are the worst.
2. When I say “Happily Ever After” what is the first book you think of, and why?
I have to say, I think of Harry Potter. I know how the Epilogue is quite not-even-haf-as-good-as-it-should-have-been, but I personally needed the "All was well" part. Also, I've been thinking, and is the only one of my favourites that has something that can count as "Happily Ever After" (this is so sad, I might have to reconsider my choices in life and books).
3. If you could marry any book character, who would it be?
Uhm... I've been torn between Remus Lupin (Harry Potter) and Will Parry (His Dark Materials) since I was like 8, to be honest. I think I haven't fallen in love with a character as much as I have with them all this long, and I suppose it would be one of them.
4. Who is your most hated book character?
This is going to look like a Harry Potter ask, but DOLORES UMBRIDGE. I can't help it. She is so evil, so monstruous, I will never forgive her. Never. By the way, I also hate quite a lot Arthur Huntingdon (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall).
5. What is your favorite thing about booklr?
Obviously, the people. Even if I don't know most of you, and I don't talk that much, you are all so kind, and sweet, and lovely. Thank you!
6. What is one character trait that you absolutely cannot stand?
I think that when it comes to secondary characters, everything might be okay. But when it comes to the main character (especially if he or she is the narrator), I get really pissed off at egocentrcs. It's ok for a secondary character to be like that, but dude, I'm not reading the book only to know about you. I want to know the hole story. So please. Go on. I know your life is boring, you are just sat on top of a fucking tree, but instead of crying could you just please go down and do something? And so on.
7. If you were stranded and only had one book, given that you’d would never get bored of it, what book would you have with you?
I can't even try to make it sound like a difficult choice. I need my Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with me. I mean, I even brought it to Japan. I need that book as much as I need to drink, so there's no choice. It's my medicine and my friend, and if I could only have one, it would have to be this one.
8. Do you prefer a low-key vacation or an adventurous one?
I love low-key vacations. Just chilling. Reading. Swimming a little bit, sitting in the shade of a pretty umbrella, having something with the friends at night, coming back home to watch TV, one or two family gatherings so I see them but they don't stress me out. And, actually, I have vertigo, so I can't do half the adventurous things.
9. What is your favorite nickname?
Since I do have more than one, my favourite nickname is Kam. Actually there are people who have believed it to be my real name, since it's how most of my friends call me.
10. Context: every year at my school, a club I have a leadership position in sells Rose Grams for Valentine’s day. Question: Would you appreciate it if I bought you a Rose Gram (theoretically, since Valentine’s is over and the Rose Grams were passed out today) and/or would you buy me one?
I had to check, and I believe Rose Grams are just one single rose? Sorry if it's not, my first language isn't English T_T
Going on the thought, if I were in the position to buy one, I suppose I would, since I've done it before, are roses are cool presents for friends. And obviously, if I received something from someone as lovely as you are, I'd appreciate it a lot!
11. One “-ism” that you strongly believe in.
I strongly believe in Feminism. And I think there's no need to go into much detail: I believe men and women are equal, and that's it.
So, now... 11 new questions:
A book that you haven't been able to finish. Why?
Which is the best literary character you have ever read?
Hardbacks, paperbacks or ebooks?
Which genre do you read the most?
Do you read any plays or poetry?
Do you use social media to talk about books?
Which is your favourite comic book/graphic novel/manga?
If you could do so without any worries, would you like to live in a different country? If so, where?
Favourite TV show?
Do you take lots of photos, when on a trip?
Do you like chocolate?
And I'm tagging letmestayawake, neswina, americaerikaa, theafghangirl, elficdreams, lightkh, aaand... Anybody else that wants to. Sorry if I'm tagging you and you don't want to, feel free to just ignore. :D

n 1984 photographer Steve McCurry immortalized the haunted eyes of a 12-year-old Afghan refugee in a camp on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Her image (left)—first published on the cover of a 1985 National Geographic—became a symbol of the plight of refugees. For 17 years the photographer tried to find the mystery "Afghan girl" again. In 2002 he succeeded—and again captured her on film (right) #TheAfghanGirl #NationalGeographic #Afghanistan #girl
