As a Hellenist, I've recently noticed a trend among various PJO fanfictions which in the big scheme of things isn't a huge deal but something I wanted to set right. And it's to do with Poseidon.

(EDIT: By Hellenist, I am referring to my degree in Classical Studies and Ancient History. I am not referring to Hellenic Polytheism.)

I couldn’t find any earlier examples, but starting with IzzyMRDB’s fic, several fics make reference to Poseidon possessing a gift of prophecy or, in the case of percabeth4life’s fic, suggest that there was some sort of abundant connection between oracles and the sea. And it’s simply not true.

Poseidon has variously been associated with or considered a god of: the sea (Hom. Il. xv. 184), earthquakes (Hom. Il. xv. 190), and horses (Hom. Il. xxiii. 307), along with being referred to by various epithets connecting him to springs (Κρηνούχος), seaweed (Φύκιος) and bulls (Tαύρειος). He has never, in any primary text, been referred to as having any connection to prophecy himself.

He has, however, been attributed as the father of beings with various connections to prophecy. In some traditions the Greek sea-god Proteus, described as tending Poseidon’s seal flock by Homer (Od. iv. 365), is instead described as a son of Poseidon and king of Egypt (Apollod. ii. 5). Further, the Delphic Sybil Herophile (a prophetess) ordinarily considered the daughter of Zeus and Lamia (Pausanias 10.12.2; which also describes Lamia as a daughter of Poseidon) has been conflated with a sea-nymph daughter of Poseidon and Aphrodite bearing the same name by Scholiast (on Pindar’s Pythian Ode 8.24) which was carried over by Riordan who subsequently conflated Herophile with the Erythraean Sibyl in the Trials of Apollo series.

So, yeah. Obviously, fanfic writers don’t have to stick to historical/mythological accuracy in their works, but something I found equally strange and hilarious while reading these fics was how this particular connection between Poseidon and prophecy kept popping up. I have no idea how it’s happened, but if any of the authors (or others in the fandom) do have an interest in accuracy, keep in mind in the future that there is no direct evidence of Poseidon himself having any connection to prophecy. Even taking Proteus (and arguably Herophile) into account, that’s only one or two children of well over 30 attributed offspring who have been described with any connection to prophecy at all, which statistically doesn’t point to their existence being evidence of their prophetic gift having anything to do with their father.

This is, indeed, Lorca's last play and has a completely, shockingly feminist theme, dealing with a behind closed doors confrontation between an Andalusian matriarch (Bernarda Alba), her prophetic mother and her five daughters. Repressed feelings, social prejudice (this is, after all, Southern Spain in the Thirties), sexual tension, hidden love (Pepe, Angustias' love interest never appears on stage) and loss make it for a grandiose tragedy, not unlike the best Ancient Greek ones.

Not exactly what a peasant 'who does not read' (I 👀 everything you dare to write, Disgruntled Tumblrettes, and that was a very, very low blow - also hysterically funny coming from people like you) would enjoy seeing. And also something very appealing to the Sybil of Tydavnet - of that, I am very sure.

Color me intrigued. And yes, bitch around, Mordor. You can't stop this and you know it.

And yes, I would gladly see it, but alas it's on stage until January 6 only. I am particularly interested in the adaptation - just down my own alley & taste.

narcissa malfoy/molly weasley

so, i genuinely back this one - like lucius and arthur and ron and draco, narcissa and molly are narrative mirrors, and narrative mirror pairings always slap.

above all, one key area of their mirroring is that they're simultaneously central to their family's arc across the canon series, and yet also excluded from their family more generally by the narrative.

molly, for example, lacks the daring streak which characterises the rest of her family who appear in the main cast of the series, is much more interested in social convention, and is estranged from the child with whom she is most aligned [percy] for much of the series; she isn't a quidditch fan [there's no conceivable reason why she wouldn't come to the world cup if she was]; she doesn't seem to have any friends or connections that she doesn't also share with arthur [whereas he seems to be genuinely popular among his colleagues at the ministry]; and she is almost never seen outside of a domestic context - and when she is, it's usually while shopping or doing other activities which are adjacent to the domestic sphere.

narcissa gets less development because she's a more minor character, but she clearly lacks the rebellious streak which both bellatrix and andromeda must possess in order to defy the wizarding world's gendered conventions so openly; she's not a death eater, unlike her husband and son, and is therefore excluded from both lucius and draco's main social circle; she doesn't appear to have any friends outside of her family that she doesn't know through lucius; and she too is found in canon primarily in a domestic or domestic-adjacent context.

i think that both narcissa and molly must, therefore, be quite lonely, and i think that something really quite interesting can be done with that - especially in a post-war setting, with narcissa trying to come to terms with the fact that the defiance of voldemort she set in motion ended with molly killing her sister.

fleur delacour/ginny weasley

ginny spending most of half-blood prince acting up about how fleur thinks she's so hot and so interesting is definitely giving bisexual awakening.

fleur letting ginny wear a really low-cut dress at her wedding - and not being bothered in the slightest that this results in ginny's rack being given a shoutout to the entire congregation by muriel - is also giving bisexual and interested.

both rita and sybill’s lives are based in pure artifice. their careers hang on an ability to know things - sybill to predict the future, rita to be informed about the top news stories of the day - which neither of them actually possess. sybill is a fraud. rita is a hack.

and that must be very lonely. which means that meeting someone else who shares that experience…

plus, both of them are characters who fall foul of jkr’s loathing of women whose appearance and demeanour deviates from her extremelynarrow criteria for acceptable femininity - sybill because she looks spacey and gaudy, rita because she decks herself out in glamorous frivolities - her nails! her handbags! - which can’t mask the fact that she looks ‘manly’ […!]. jkr’s opinions on gender can get fucked, and the women she spends the series obviously loathing getting fucked by each other is one way to achieve this.

this is a fic idea i've had brewing for a while. sybil is a half-blood and infamous for the fact her visions aren't real. growing up in the muggleworld in the 70's and attending mass she is convinced that she is the second coming of christ. my girls had visions of the future, she knows she's a wizard but her prophecys aren't "normal" and she's tried to turn water to wine.

pandora is a believed seer, her visions are trusted. she's reputable and a pureblood. so pandora hears about sybil's spiritual break down of "im god" and is enamoured with her. the rosier way of enamoured which leads to pandora running experiments and going on adventures to test visions and prophecies with her girlfriend. if she can change Sybil's visions and if sybil can change hers all while learning about "sybil being a part of the Holy Spirit"

Information: Peter is an extremely important side character, since he's Marlene's best friend and one of her roommates. He's morally light-grey – not entirely good, but fairly close. I depicted him as a very thoughtful and inquisitive character; he likes to read and gives excellent advice. Overall, he's a very likable character (or at least, I hope he is!)

This morning's rehearsal for tonight's performance. On the night of December 24th, the Sybil gives its prophecy.

El Cant de la Sibil·la (The Song of the Sibyl), in L'Alguer called Lo Senyal del Judici (The Sign of the Judgment), is a liturgical drama explained through song where a Sibyl (an Ancient oracle woman) prophetizes and describes the Apocalypse.

In the Middle Ages, this prophecy was performed in different parts of Southern Europe, but the Council of Trent (meeting of the Catholic Church in the years 1545-1563 to unify the Catholic response to Protestantism and its liturgy, bashing heresies) banned it because it considered it a pagan ritual. Somehow, in Mallorca and L'Alguer they continued to represent it, and has survived to this day, still with the original lyrics in Medieval Catalan that were translated from Latin in the 13th century. The most iconic moment comes at the end of the song, when the Sibyl raises her sword to draw a cross in the air.

Since the 19th century, other parts of the Catalan Countries (Catalonia and the Valencian Country) have revitalized the tradition and nowadays it's widely performed in many churches in towns and cities all around the Catalan Countries, like it once was.

In 2010, UNESCO declared Mallorca's El Cant de la Sibil·la Intangible Cultural Heritage of the world.
