It's 4am and I just woke up from a scary looping dream about how a cyborg race takes us over and decides we all need to die, but instead of just watching silly comfort videos to put me to sleep I instead chose to read about the insanity that is barnacles which of course led me to parasitic barnacles and of course that led me to learning about the crab hacker barnacle and how it's just a collection of tendrils inside of a crab body with a reproduction organ on the outside and the males are just a collection of sperm creation cells in the sac and what freaks me out is that this thing is basically a crustacean that's turned itself into a horrifying fungus and I feel like this is forbidden knowledge and that my life is forever changed for having learned or knowing it.

Anyway my attempts at going back to sleep are going great and I am not at all learning of what probably inspires Yames to make his video games and haha also barnacle geese are called that because idiots in the old UK thought they were born from the goose barnacle (no relation).

so this is a really divisive and complicated topic to talk about (which is why this ask is so unbearably long), but the furry community is basically the beta version of the trans community. it's why there's a lot of overlap between the two groups. predation, abuse, fetishism, and bigotry run rampant in the community, but they're capable of covering it up really well because a lot of people in the community have a lot of money and influence in tech, and they're really good at damage control and marketing.

before i say anything else though, there's something that is very important to clarify in this topic. not all anthropomorphized art styles are "furry." in fact, the vast majority aren't. but furries obfuscate this, because making claim that any anthro = furry means that a lot more people are furry by definition, and a good deal of them won't want to give up on their interests just because they "technically count as furry." they're not actually furry, furry art is all either fetishistic or directly influenced by fetishistic content, but furries obfuscate that distinction because it's really bad pr, and suckering innocents into defining themselves as furries when they're not is how they lure in people either groom into the fetish (for a bigger market), victimize (usually financially and sexually), or use as their pr faces ("furries aren't degens, look at this 13 year old girl who draws sparkledogs and this 24 year old person with autism with art inspired by vintage children's books illustrations!").

basically, there are a minority of people who genuinely don't have fetishistic intent, and were either coerced into the community under false pretenses of what the community was, or they lost a semantics game and define themselves as "furries" because furries claim that the defining feature of "being a furry" is "liking anthropomorphic animals," even though you can tell there is something distinguishing them from that if you even take a moment to look at the things they produce. the furries then promptly pretend these innocents are the "defining group," or at least neutralize the inherent fetishism in the community, as a way of deflecting criticism, despite the fact that the fetishists are the predominant group (or at least the group that holds the most power over the community).

to simplify it: "furry" is a fetishistic (or at least fetish-inspired, knowingly or not) derivative of art that includes anthropomorphization.

behind the scenes, there's a lot more going on. not just pedophilic fetish art, but there's a surprising amount of legitimate predation on children, as well as a shocking amount of zoophilia. a lot of this is kept quiet through use of encrypted programs like telegram, harassment / deplatforming / blackmail of people from the in-group they suspect might blow the whistle on the whole thing, exertion of digital power (you likely have no idea how many of the people who essentially "run" the internet modern day are furries; it's a lot), and (as mentioned before) disinformation campaigns where they advertise themselves as a "diverse group" of "mostly innocent people."

a lot of the people who separate from the group don't see the worst of it, and most will tell you that they left because they didn't quite "mesh" with the fandom (most people i meet like this are women who cite the highly sexual nature of the group). most of this stuff is only observable if you still have your wits about you but, for whatever reason, end up having the displeasure of speaking to many individuals from the community somewhat often (as you might imagine, this is not a common combination of traits).

they're not shy about talking about their paraphilias. very few of them don't have any. most of them are into things like bdsm, "little" rp, transformation fetish, gender-bender fetish (fetishistic crossdressing and "sissification" are big), raceplay, or humiliation. so far, i've not met a single male furry that didn't have cluster pedophilia, and about half the female furries i've met had cluster paraphilias, too.

they're a little more hesitant about talking about the shady stuff that goes on in their community, if you know the specifics to ask for, though. a lot of times they'll default to "erm, yeah, well, that happens, but, like, not all furries are like that, and bad people exist everywhere." it's not at all reminiscent of the direct-action attitude i've seen in actual marginalized groups when speaking about abusive people within their communities. they focus all their efforts on minimizing the issue or outright excusing it. the only group within the furry community who tried to actually put a stop to the pedophilia that i know of turned out to be a group of nazis. not "oh they're like nazis." literal nazis. there's actually a pretty big population of so-called "nazifurs." digression aside, the point is that the only ones who made any effort to try to actually clean up the pedophiles from the community were literal, actual fascists.

i could go into the worst shit i've seen and heard from the community, but i honestly don't want to get into it too much. i'll say that the accusations of grooming, pedophilia, and bestiality are not at all "singular, rare cases," though. they're in-community issues that the worst of the worst in the community will encourage each other to do and talk about casually with each other. it makes the standard coomer or domestic abuser varieties that are much, much more common in that space seem normal by comparison.

to cap this all off, i'll state a couple simple facts. somewhere between 71 to 85% of furries are male, and between 83 and 90% of furries self-identify as white. information on political views is to be discarded, because no studies like that one that was done on trans individuals (the one that questioned what they believe their political leanings are or what labels they use vs specific questions about beliefs) have been done, as far as i can tell. i don't know about you, but i've never seen a group with this sort of demographic that has been anything other than vile.

While Mermaid sightings have been documented as early as the ancient Greeks, merfolk were first spotted, noted, and classified by famed Amadic researcher Darius Biles in 1867. While the species Biles documented back then was the Common Atlantic Mermaid (Blue Mermaid, Cetacean Mermaid, Jumping Mermaid) Several species and variants have been found throughout North America.

North American merfolk speak several different dialects of American english, possibly derived from interactions with English sailors. While it was originally thought that the dialects of merfolks was specific to region, it is actually specific to species and variant. The dialects depend on the things in their environment, previous interactions with humans, and in some cases, the actual build of a merfolk’s vocal chords.

The two variants of merfolks discussed in this Write-up are the Hyperion (Homo Sirenia Acipenser) and the Michigreen (Homo Sirenia Amia). Both are common in the upper Midwestern United States, and both variants can be dangerous towards humans. While no incidents of these species preying on humans have been reported, reports of injury with intent and endangerment have been reported. The intent of this Write-up is to inform the general public of the existence of these creatures, and what to do should they be encountered.

HABITAT: Known to live in river deltas, estuaries.

APPEARANCE: Bodies up to 8 feet long. Long, black hair. Gray-green skin on torso and arms. Yellow-green eyes. Tails resemble sturgeon tail. Males posses yellow line down underbelly. Females have no such marking.

DIET: Hyperion merfolk are known carnivores, and prey on smaller fish.

IF APPROACHED BY A HYPERION MERFOLK:

-If you are on a boat, whether the interaction is violent or nonviolent, stay in your boat. Entering the water without permission may be seen as a provocation.

-If the interaction is violent, you should do your best to leave the area quickly and safely. Hyperion merfolk can jump to a height twice as long as their bodies, and may try to enter the boat.

-If the interaction is nonviolent, you may hold a conversation. Do not feed merfolk, as they prefer to hunt for themselves. Do not try to touch without permission.

-If the merfolk looks injured, leave it be. Hyperion merfolk prefer to heal each other rather than be healed.

DIET: Michigreen Merfolk are ambush predators, usually preying on small crustaceans and smaller fish.

IF APPROACHED BY A MICHIGREEN MERFOLK:

-If you are on a boat, try and figure out what the michigreen might need from you. Michigreen merfolk are not known to approach boats without reason, as they are often smaller than the boats themselves, and do not see advantage from them. Do NOT feed them.

-If you are not on a boat, proceed with caution. Some Michigreen have been known to attack humans if the target is small, or if there is a school of Michigreen.

-If the interaction is violent, do your best to vacate the water immediately; a single Michigreen can overpower a human child. There may also be more Michigreen waiting to attack, if they believe you might be a threat.

-If the interaction is nonviolent, proceed with caution. Do not go somewhere with the Mihigreen if you do not have a partner going with you. Do not follow a michigreen somewhere you cannot exit, as they may assume you can breathe water.

AN ODE TO THE SEVEN SISTERS: RANGINUI & PAPATUANUKU

It was a quaint little pond, surrounded by lash green bush and flowers. It was not anything special or out of the ordinary except it was well hidden from nearby hike paths and had a lone bench facing the water. The pond almost always had ducks and geese swimming calmly and in the clear waters you could see the little fish swimming. It was a very quiet place except for the nearby noise from the creek water and the happy animals and bugs more often than not yelling out their mating calls. I called this simple non-assuming place my secret garden, there was never anybody except for the animals and it was so peaceful. I would sit there for hours watching the ducks and fish swim, listen to the birds and creek water and just enjoy the isolation. The secret garden was my escape, a place I could unplug from the world and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like the warm wind gently brushing against my face while I watched the pond water turn pink in the sunset’s reflection. It was also a place I went to reflect and meditate so the secret garden was in essence, a sacred garden to me. One day I came to the pond, Thursday evening as usual. And there sat this old lady. She seemed to just intensely stare at the pond watching the fish and had a distant smile. The air around her was both deeply tranquil and mystical. You could sense it but it was indescribable in words. I was about to turn around figuring I’ll come some other time when I would be alone, but as I turned to leave the lady turned and gave me the most warm, radiant smile. I was mesmerized. Silently, she moved to the other end of the bench and motioned me to sit down. I hesitated at first but she turned her smile and gaze back to the pond and the ducks and fish and it was as if I was not there. Slowly, I moved and went and sat on the bench and gradually I got to my own routine…silently staring at nature. We must have been there for at least 2 hours, occasionally pointing at a cheeky duckling, but just silently enjoying each other’s company. And just like that, that’s how it started. Every Thursday evening, for about an hour, we fed the ducks and silently enjoyed this little simple beautiful pond that made us forget the world and yet ironically, reflect on the universe. Sometime the lady brought packed dinner for us and of course bread to feed the ducks and fish. We seldom talked at length, it was an understanding. The peace that came with human silence was a prize worth paying. But this lady, ever so dignified and graceful with a motherly aura and eyes aged grey with wisdom, I deeply respected and appreciated her company. This day, I went to the pond. I had a heavy heart, really needed to clear my head and find peace. I was deeply troubled by the state of the world, everywhere reports of killings by religious zealots, everywhere reports of irreversible catastrophic environmental damage, everywhere economic strife, racism, xenophobia and total disregard for welfare of helpless victims of conflict….I was getting disillusioned and loosing hope in both humanity and the world. I felt despair and frustration bordering on complete depression. I was in urgent need of peace and reassurance. As I sat there watching the water and fish feeling empty and hollow, a hand touched my left shoulder. I didn’t need to turn around to know it was my graceful wise old lady friend. I didn’t say anything or turn around as I could only master so much selfcontrol in light of the unfolding turmoil in my heart. She came around and sat next to me but did not say a word, instead handed me a piece of bread to feed the ducks. And then we sat there in silence for a few minutes. Finally, she turned to me and with her kind greying eyes that told me this was indeed an old soul, looked at me and barely whispered, “What weighs down your heart? You seem lost today, and you have the thousand yard stare…talk to me”. And I did. I just poured my heart out. All the insecurities, the fear, the anger, the frustrations and the despair. Everything, including a tear or two. She didn’t reach out to embrace me. Nor did she interrupt me while I talked and rumbled on. When I was finished, she just sat silently staring straight ahead into the setting sun over the horizon. I really appreciated that gesture because she knew I needed a moment to breath, compose my emotions so that I can be receptive to her counsel. “There must be strife so that we as souls, people, community and civilization we can grow and evolve. How will we learn to appreciate peace if we didn’t fathom the depravity of conflict? Darkness is the absence of Light and not the other way round. It is unpleasant but necessary. It is ying and yang. As we evolve through our differences we will realize the simplicity of it all. Think of religious affiliations as a particular preferred bank and the money deposited in them, as virtues. What will become clear, if we make the right choices, is that it does not matter who you bank with, what matters is the contents of the bank account, in this case, virtues. You must strive to be the light that radiates Love and compassion in this time of fear and hate. It does not matter if you are in the minority. Especially then. You must be the fish that swims up the river, better strong and alone than weak in a crowd. That is how we break the chains of fear and become a light to the world. Love begets Love.” She looked at me and smiled reassuringly. It was getting dark and the stars shimmered across the cosmos. We often star gazed together and tried to pick out the various constellations. It was one of rare things we had passion enough for to compromise the golden silence rule. She had once told me stars were there to remind us to be humble and that we are part of something bigger and grander and more beautiful. She often talked about stars like they were living beings and she enjoyed deriving life’s narratives from them. Stars, she explained, have existed eons before Earth, let alone religions, so from her perspective, the narratives better reflected the interconnectedness of the universe. She had reminded me repeatedly that true wisdom and intelligence is not knowledge acquisition, but the ability to entertain different ideas and perspectives without necessarily accepting them. For my part, my awe came from a more scientific perspective. I was star durst, and I shared that heritage with even the grandest of those beautiful things. And I was Loved as much. Reflection is important, the future may seem distant and the Promised Land really far, but you have to look at how far you have come to appreciate your growth both as a person and as a civilization. The caterpillar goes through a cycle of ugly destructiveness before eventually morphing to a beautiful butterfly, a snake has to shed its skin to retain its beautiful lustre and grow, in the same way we can learn from nature and find a path of selfredemption. We can choose to blaspheme on the reality of conflict that has now been our path and take a different road.The key is not to trade Love for fear.” The night was clear except for distant clouds with a radiant full moon. I sat there in silence taking in what she had said. I turned to her as she started speaking while her eyes were totally fixed on the stars above. Her look was very distant, more so than I had seen before. “In a very different place and time, there was a people very similar to us. Same aspirations, same humour, and the same general temperament. They lived in a stunningly beautiful home called Avalon. Over the years the people in Avalon prospered and became wealthy. With time conflicts arose over spirituality. Similar to earth’s contemporary political and religious turmoil, there were violent outcomes over ideological differences. The issue when simplified, came down to two differences. One faction felt that they could progress their spiritual growth through servitude to others while others thought spirituality can only be achieved through internal focus. Things could have been fine if the ideology was left to people’s free choice. But systematically the factional conflicts infected all levels of society to the point one had to pick one side to get basic necessities and survive. Politics and institutions became infected with factionalism. Virtue and Integrity was abandoned for blind devotion and all the while society was decaying and fragmenting to a cesspool of hate and endless cycles of violence. Eventually some who were willing to compromise left for Erra, their new home among the Seven Sisters. Avalon, beautiful Avalon, was eventually totally destroyed beyond redemption. Its legendary beauty now a myth, and thus the wisdom to deeply respect Mother Nature among those from the Seven Sisters came at a price. It has since been a scar they have never forgotten.The experience,albeit tragic, was sacred to them. Those descendants in Erra and surrounding areas made it a quest to understand themselves, their purpose and how to restore harmony among themselves. However, those who felt inclined to serve others to attain spiritual insights continued so in the ancient tradition and so did the ones who focused inward. Instead of conflicts, they shared insights. Then in an ordinary event, an extra ordinary thing happened. Among them, one was born who vibrated so high in Love and universal consciousness. He was very unremarkable in physical appearance and did not have any special talents in particular. Except he understood the nature of the universe. The simplicity of it all. One needs both darkness and light. Male and Female. The Creator was both and neither, therefore Unity. And this meant that one could never fully achieve growth by either servitude alone nor pure meditation, but both. There had to be unity. Of heart and mind. Serving Others and Serving Self. Devotion and Virtue. This Unity, the wise teacher explained, leads to self-redemption because by focusing internally, one realizes and acknowledges their own imperfections and therefore they will be less inclined to be harsh on others. By forgiving and loving themselves internally, they realize everyone has flaws and struggles. This makes one more empathetic towards others and this eventually leads down a path of Love and acceptance. It is the perfect karma, by showing yourself compassion, you resonate it outwards and that in turn is automatically reflected around you as you give yourself more to the service of others. And by opening up to others to Love you despite and in spite your imperfections, you also get to experience the same towards others. Fear makes us see differences while Love makes us focus on commonalities, thus fear is the enemy of Unity, which is the nature of the Creator, who is in essence, Unconditional Love. They finally understood that the only permanent thing in life is change,that true change, starts with the person in the mirror, but the journey need not be solitary. Love begets Love. Thus it came to pass the descendants of Avalon living among the Seven Sisters in the sky came to fathom the teachings of Senanda. Their lost world represented a dark past that would forever haunt them. Avalon was a beauty to behold but no one respected Her, nor appreciated what they had in Her. Eventually She got needlessly destroyed in conflict and neglect. It is a scar that reminds them of the depths of depravity a civilization without virtue can sink to, even with perceived scientific and theological advances. They now hold their new home in Erra in sacred awe. They now know the difference between being custodians of sacred places and arrogantly assuming dominion over them. They understand Love should never be replaced by fear. They embrace their past because it has taught them to aspire to grow, inwardly and outwards while spreading compassion. Their tragedy has ultimately made them a better people. To those people, long after he was gone,their teacher Senanda came to represent the light that is compassion, wisdom and virtue, their Future, while Avalon held memories of the Past based on fear, bigotry and empty devotion. To those from the Seven Sisters, that was their Ying and Yang. Light and Dark. Senanda and Avalon. Both were equally important. Balance and Unity.” She stopped talking and fell silent once again. It had grown really dark as the clouds had completely covered the sky and it had begun drizzling. We watched the rain drops hit the pond water while the ducks swam without a care in the world. She placed her hand on me gently and pointed towards the pond. “You see the rain drops? Each drop is unique but when it hits the pond, it becomes part of a bigger existence. You are created in the image of God, you are a facet of Him/Her, unique and individual but part of the whole and very much appreciated. Like those water droplets that eventually end up forming the ocean. So are you and I and the stars and the eternal Love that is the Creator. Do not ever forget that, Noble Warrior”. I got startled, as I had never told her the actual meaning of my name. I resorted this was as good as any time to ask her name. I had only referred to her respectfully as ma’am. “I have never known your actual name….” I started but trailed off when she looked deep in my eyes and gave me a mysterious smile as if she had anticipated the question. “Malaika.”She said. And with that, she slowly got up and embraced me tightly. She then walked off without uttering another word. A beautiful wise graceful mysterious being. Full of Love and insight. PRONOUN MASTERPOST

This was a request from Jollysunflora so I’ll go through the pronouns in each language in each language from simplest to most complex *cough* Fire-ese *cough*

Earth-ese In Earth-ese the pronouns are fairly simple. They don’t change for case and are more or less consistent throughout the whole Earth Kingdom. It’s no wonder United Republic-ans chose these over the Fire-ese pronouns.

Jei – 1st-person pronoun: ‘me’, ‘I’

Su – 2nd-person pronoun: ‘you’

Nope – 3rd-person pronoun (pronounced either 1 syllable or 2 syllables depending on the accent). This refers to a human whose gender is either unspecified, unsure, or neither male or female.

Lu – 3rd-person pronoun, used for a female human: ‘she’, ‘her’

Man – 3rd-person pronoun, used for a male human: ‘he’, ‘him’

Ca – 3rd-person pronoun, used for non-humans like: ‘it’

Now, I have left out ‘we’ and ‘they’ here because this is where Earth-ese differs from English a bit, but it’s still fairly simple.

The word-order of Earth-ese actually allows you to put as many pronouns next to each other as you need. So, instead of ‘we’ you either say ‘me and you’ (jei su) or ‘me and you and her’ (jei su lu) or however pronouns describe what you’re referring to.

‘They’ as in a large group of varied people can be ‘Nope lu man’ or ‘man lu’ but in the Southern dialect it is also common to just add the plural suffix ‘-chong’, such as ‘Nopechong’.

For ‘you’ when referring to a large group, Northern Earth-ese speaker would say ‘Su su’ as in ‘you and you’ but in Southern Earth-ese it is more common to say ‘Suchong’.

There are no formal versions of these pronouns as formality and politeness are often added at the start of the sentence with context words in a similar way to ‘please’. Although, in some Southern dialects they suffix these context words onto the pronouns, similar to the plural marker.

UR Fire-ese I actually lied. UR Fire-ese probably has the easiest pronouns but since they’re derived from the Earth-ese pronouns I thought it was easier to explain those first.

Anyway, UR Fire-ese took ‘Jei’, ‘Su’, ‘Nope’, ‘Lu’, ‘Man’, and ‘Ca’ from Earth-ese but simplified the plural pronouns using the Fire-ese plural suffix ‘-ghan’ (Pronounced ‘-gan’ in the UR). Fire-ese also has a dual suffix (-zu) but since Earth-ese does not it is only used emphatically in UR Fire-ese.

Jeigan – ‘we’, ‘us’

No-pe-gan – ‘they’, ‘them’ (human)

Cagan – ‘they’, ‘them’ (non-human)

While the ‘-ghan’ suffix can be used on any of the other pronouns, these two were the most commonly accepted in general speech. ‘Sugan’ or ‘Suzu’ or ‘Lugan’ are all understood but only really used when you want to be specific, like specifically saying ‘You all’ or ‘the pair of women’.

However, UR Fire-ese is still Fire-ese and the closer you speak to Mainland Fire-ese the ‘posher’ you are perceived. These pronouns are still vastly preferred but a few very posh/formal speakers add Fire-ese pronouns, usually derived from a person’s title, almost like an honorific.

For example, the Council Page Tarrlok sent to convince Korra to join the taskforce. He would say something along the lines of: “Councilman Tarrlok sends his compliments and urges the Avatar to reconsider his offer.” Despite being a Fire-ese addition, this is often combined with the Earth-ese articles like ‘the’.

Most people make fun of this practice as it sounds like you’re speaking in third person.

Air-ese

Air-ese don’t conjugate for number, gender, or formality so in effect they only have 3 pronouns:

Fa – 1st-person: ‘me’, ‘I’, we’, ‘us’

Ka – 2nd-peron: ‘you’

Ta – 3rd-person: ‘she’, ‘her’, ‘he’, ‘him’, ‘it’, ‘they’

But everything in Air-ese has to conjugate for case to be understood so these are either used as the ‘f-‘, ‘k-‘, and ‘t-‘ prefixes or the ‘-fa’, ‘-ka’, and ‘-ta’ suffixes.

In a noun phrase, you would add ‘(l)ang’ to them: fang/langfa, kang/langka, tang/langta
