Waking up with a sore throat and a snotty nose was not how you wanted to start your day. At all. Your eyes felt crusty from sleep, or your sickness and your whole body felt achy and cold. Well, no work today for you, that's for sure. You were not going to get up, get dressed, and everything, just to suffer through eight or nine hours of dealing with people. That sounded like torture, and you didn't want to risk getting anyone else sick. One part of you was pretty elated, you didn't really care much for your job. But, the other part of you was going to miss your best friend, Sam. The both of you had planned to go out to dinner together.
You and Sam met when he rode into your sleepy little town on his motorcycle. You were on your way to college, walking down the sidewalk when he pulled up to you. He asked for directions to the closest motel and you answered politely; whilst also trying not to get too caught up in how handsome he was.
Throughout his stay in your little town, you had bumped into him many times. On the fourth time, you were with friends at a bar. You had been chatting with them, laughing and having a good time as you usually did, before one of your friends nudged you in the side. You looked at them, seeing their bright, mischievous grin and the glint in their eyes; watching as they gestured with their eyes to the other side of the room.
You turned your head, looking over, only to freeze. There, at the other side of the bar, was the mysterious stranger that rode into town only a few days prior. The stranger that you had learned was called Sam Drake; his eyes flickered over to you. You had bumped into them three times before - as previously said - and all three times, you felt this immense connection between the two of you.
Before you knew it, you found yourself walking to the other side of the bar; with a smidge of help from your friends, your confidence grew; albeit with the help of some liquid courage. You stood with him, leaning against the bar as you sipped one of your drinks.
You finally got to know the mysterious Sam, finding out that he was a treasure hunter; which definitely intrigued you. He told you the many stories of his adventures, from Captain Avery's treasure to just traveling around different countries with his brother.
When it was your turn to speak, you almost felt that your life was practically nothing in comparison to his. You didn't go off on amazing adventures or found long lost treasure. You worked a simple - yet boring - nine to five job. You had friends, went out to the arcade and the movies sometimes, but never anything as amazing as what Sam said he did. You hadn't even traveled outside of the country. But you spoke your part, and Sam didn't turn away. He didn't yawn, he didn't stray his eyes, and he didn't try to interrupt you. You had his full and complete attention.
And, well... To make a long story short. The two of you quickly became best friends.
Sam stayed in the town for the next month, playing the excuse that he needed a small vacation from his treasure hunting. You greatly doubted that. But, for that month, you spent most of the time together. You showed him around, introduced him to your friends, and even went on mini adventures on that motorcycle of his together. You were both joined at the hip, and you - and Sam - wouldn't have it any other way.
But he did have to go. You had learned that Sam never liked to stay in one place for too long. And before you knew it, he was heading off to Granada, Spain. You were incredibly crestfallen. You didn't want him to go so soon, but then he asked you something that you couldn't refuse.
He asked you to come with him.
You couldn't say ‘no.’ How could you say ‘no?’ This was your chance to get out of the country, to get away from your sleepy little town, to get away and go on a real adventure. You asked your boss for the time off, packed your bags, and off you and Sam went - with the help of his friend Sully - whom you grew to adore as a father figure.
Granada was beautiful. The architecture, the culture, the food, everything. You wished that you could stay there forever. Sam - quite literally - taught you the ropes, teaching you how to toss a grapple hook and swing across high cliffs. You traveled through forests, through old ruins, and even helped Sam find the lost jewels of Enrique Gómez. It was adrenaline-filled, and exciting.
You didn't know when, or where in Granada, but you found yourself falling for the thief. You quite thought that he stole your heart. And you did not want it back. You loved how passionate he got when he spoke about an artifact or some treasure he had planned to find in the future. You loved the way his face lit up when he found something amazing to show you. You loved how the corners of his eyes would crinkle when he laughed. You loved his voice when he spoke about anything and everything; you could listen to him talk for hours. And you loved his eyes... They held so many emotions, and if you held his gaze long enough, you believed that you'd fall into those dark abysses of his.
This realization however, made your life a bit more difficult.
~~~
Groaning slightly, you pouted, not even wanting to move an inch; it felt like your skin was on fire, yet you were freezing. However, you needed to use the bathroom, and your nose was beginning to run, so you had to get up. After you were finished, you headed downstairs to find some tissues so you didn't have to use toilet paper, grabbed your carton of ice cream from the freezer for your sore throat, and headed back to your room. Dealing with your nose, you sniffled before heading to your closet to find your fuzzy bathrobe. Slipping that on, you almost felt a little better before heading to your TV, sliding your ‘Superman ll’ VHS tape into the player. Sitting on your bed, your back against the headboard, you slowly ate your ice cream as you watched your movie; feeling groggy and aching.
~~~
Sam waited by his motorcycle, leaning on the diner building’s wall, as he waited for you; taking a drag from his cigarette. He was becoming a bit restless, with his foot tapping against the pavement. Near the beginning of his friendship with you, he insisted that he would pick you up in the evenings when you both had planned to have dinner together, but you insisted back, wanting to use your own car; not wanting Sam to waste his motorcycle’s gas more than he had to. Sam had been a bit disappointed in the beginning. He thought picking you up would be a great opportunity to spend more time with you, but it didn’t take Sam long to agree with you.
But as he waited, and waited, Sam began to wonder and worry about you. What if something happened? What if you got caught in traffic? Sam scoffed to himself on that. Traffic? There was hardly any, if not zero, traffic in your little town; Sam came to realize that after staying there for the past month or so. So, where were you?
Were you okay?
Though Sam was used to feeling worried and uneasy - especially for his brother, Nathan - he still wasn't used to the feeling. In addition to these feelings that grew whenever he saw you. This intense sense of desire to protect, hold, and cherish you. It scared the hell out of him. It scared him because he didn't know how to handle it. He was a flirt. He was someone who enjoyed the thrill of danger. He probably couldn't count how many one-night stands he had. But this… This… It felt so different. He wasn’t a ‘settle down’ kind of guy. But, Sam believed that he could be for you.
He sighed heavily, smoke expelled from his mouth as he pulled the cigarette from his mouth and stared at it. You told him to quit, but it was difficult. He had cut back on how many cigarettes he smoked in a day - smoking only one or two a day. He wanted to quit; he really did - especially for you. But every once in a while, he’d lose himself and he’d start smoking again. Just a tiny bit of nicotine and he’d be good as new. Sam sighed again; staring at the cigarette for a moment before tossing it onto the ground, squishing it with the heel of his boot, and pushing himself off the wall. Sam stuffed his hands into his Jeans pockets as a couple left the diner; their laughter echoing throughout the air. Sam felt that he had waited long enough, hopping onto his bike. The trip to your house was a short one, and when Sam saw your car in the driveway, he let out a sigh of relief.
Slipping off his bike, he walked up to the front door, ringing the doorbell. Shuffling his feet on the porch, he stuffed his hands back into his jean jacket pockets, hearing shuffling behind the door. As you opened the door, Sam's awaiting grin dropped when he saw your appearance. You stood at the open door, hand holding onto the door frame to support your weight. You were wrapped up in your fuzzy bathrobe, your hair a bit messy, and still in your pajamas. Your eyes were glassy, your eyelids were hooded, and your nose red.
"Oh, sweetheart..." Sam muttered, as you sniffled, "Why didn't you tell me that you were sick? Why didn't you call me?"
"Hello, handsome," You gave him a small, tired smile, moving out of the way as he quickly entered, "I'm sorry, I should've called..." You muttered, closing the door behind yourself. "I just didn't want you to worry about me. I'm fine now, it's just a cold." You tried to reassure him, letting out a yawn.
Sam shook his head, raising his hand to press the inside of his wrist against your forehead, "Y/N, you're hot."
You let out a small laugh, having to turn and cover your mouth as you let out a nasty cough, "Thanks, you are too."
"No, sweetheart, you're really burning up." He spoke, "Come on, let's get you back into bed." You nodded slowly, following Sam up the stairs and back into your room. Sam pulled your blankets back as you climbed in; unable to stop smiling as Sam began to tuck you in perfectly. You hummed happily, snuggling deeper under your blankets before turning around to lay on your back, closing your eyes. "Do you need anything? Water, food?" Sam asked, watching as you shook your head. He let out a sigh as he ran his hand through your hair, pushing it from your sweaty forehead.
"I'm good, thank you, Sammy." You spoke, clearing your throat slightly as you opened your eyes again, "You're too good for me." You mumbled, your eyes closing once more as you fell asleep.
Sam sighed once more as your breathing began to slow, your chest rising and falling peacefully. Standing from your bed, he headed out of your house, but not before grabbing your house keys from the hook by the door.
~~~
You didn't know how long you had slept, or what time it was, but when you opened your eyes, you found the sun rising outside your bedroom window. Blinking rapidly you took in a deep breath, and sat up. As you push yourself to lean back against your headrest, you let out another cough, rubbing your sore throat with your hand. Looking around, you found Sam's jean jacket on the back of your desk chair, his shoes next to yours by your closet. You couldn't help but smile as you brushed your hair back, wondering where he was. But, your question was quickly answered as you heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and it wasn't long until your bedroom door opened.
Sam entered, dressed in his jeans and maroon v-neck, holding a bowl. Noticing that you were awake, Sam's frown flipped right around. "Afternoon, gorgeous."
"Gorgeous?" You let out a small laugh, watching as he sat down the steaming bowl on your bedside table. It looked like soup. "I bet I look like a mess, but, thank you." You smiled brightly at him, sitting up. "So, where have you been?"
He continued to grin, running a hand through his hair, "Out n' about."
"Out? Where?" You pressed, furrowing your eyebrows together.
"Well, I went to the store, and got you a few things that you might need..." He replied, grinning as he continued, going around your bed to grab a brown paper bag from the end of your bed; placing it down near your feet, "And then I made you soup. Your tea is doing whatever tea does in the kitchen. I was going to go grab it after I gave you your soup. But now that you're awake..." He trailed off, digging through the bag to pull out the items he grabbed for you.
"Sam, did you really?" You asked with a smile, excitement, and surprise in your voice, and your stomach filled with warmth as he nodded. "Is that chocolate?" You asked as Sam pulled out a few packs of crackers, some chocolate bars, a box of tissues, and a few small bottles of water.
"Yeah. I didn't know how much you needed. Or what you wanted..." He muttered, placing them all on your nightstand; the last item being an ibuprofen bottle. "But, I also saw this when I was out, and thought you might like it." He spoke, going back into the paper bag, and pulling out a book. You blinked a few times before your eyes widened, looking up at Sam in shock.
Reaching out, you took the book into your hands, a gasp leaving you, "Sam... This is ‘The Trials of Marine Beaumont’! The legendary French pirate that revolutionized European history in the seventeenth century! How did you get this? It’s been sold out everywhere." Sam shrugged lightly, giving a halfhearted smile as he took a seat at the edge of your bed. "Who knew that a small cold would bring out the nurse in you. You spoil me.”
"Don’t think that’s an excuse for you to get sick again." He smirked at you softly, “And I always spoil you.” His chocolate brown eyes gazed down at you. "How do you feel?" He then asked, shifting closer to your side.
"A little better... My throat is a bit sore, but otherwise, I feel great." You smiled softly, glancing over at your alarm clock, "It's almost two... Did you stay here all night last night?"
"Yeah," Sam nodded, "I didn't know if you'd need me for anything... So, I slept on the couch."
You sat the book down beside you on the bed, "Sammy... You should've just taken the guest bedroom. That couch is so small."
Sam just shrugged, his fingers fiddling with the edge of the handmade quilt, "Slept on worse," He joked, looking up at you, finding you already looking at him. Clearing his throat, he pressed his fist to his mouth briefly, "So, you hungry? Don't want your soup to get cold."
You hummed, nodding as your smile softened, "Yeah, it smells amazing."
~~~
"Snakes... Why is it always snakes..?"
Your bedroom was dark, only the light from your TV illuminating the room. You were sitting on your bed, leaning against the headboard, Sam beside you; his arm wrapped around your shoulders. An empty bowl sat on your bedside table, along with your new book, your empty tea cup, and your alarm clock - which read; seven-thirty-three.
Your cheek was pressed snuggly against Sam's shoulder, eyes glued to your TV as Indiana Jones found himself surrounded by snakes. Your nose felt dry, as did your throat; and you coughed. Sam rubbed soothing circles into your shoulder. Sam blindly reached for the half-empty water bottle beside him, before handing it to you.
"Thank you..." You muttered, taking small sips from the bottle. "You know," You began, clearing your throat a bit, "He reminds me of you."
Sam looked down at you, his brows knitting in confusion. "Who?"
You shook your head, "Indiana Jones." You chuckled softly, setting the bottle of water on the nightstand, "He loves adventure, going from place to place, finding treasures..." You trailed off, grabbing a tissue from the tissue box and blowing your nose. "Though I will admit, you're funnier than him." You said, throwing away the tissue in your small, plastic trash can.
"You don't say," Sam smiled, his lips grazing the tip of your head, before looking back at the TV.
"I do say," You mumbled, nuzzling your cheek on the soft fabric of his sleeve. "I love that about you. No matter how I am feeling, or what situation, you always make me laugh."
Sam suddenly felt warm, his heart fluttering as he smiled. "Hey, I am a man of many talents." Sam breathed out, his thumb running across your shoulder gently.
"Yes, you are," You grinned, just as the infamous Indiana Jones pulled his way out of the snake pit. But at the sound of your little hum, Sam looked back down at you. Feeling his eyes on you, you looked up at him. "What?" You asked, biting off a piece of your chocolate bar.
Sam tilted his head to the side slightly, his dark eyes searching yours before he spoke, "What was that little hum all about?" He asked, his grin turning mischievous.
"What hum?" You giggled quietly, moving the chocolate bar from your mouth.
"You hummed, sweetheart." He raised an eyebrow, "What popped up in that beautiful mind of yours?"
You bit your bottom lip, re-wrapping the chocolate bar and setting it over on your bedside table. You watched Sam closely, as he looked back at you. He seemed curious, waiting for your answer patiently. "Nothing important..." You spoke softly, suddenly becoming nervous. Sam could tell that something was bothering you. "Um, Sam," You paused, licking your lips nervously. "Can I ask you something?" You started, not meeting his eyes.
"You can ask me anything," He told you, his hand on your shoulder gently playing with your hair. You nodded, staring down at your hands in your lap. The short silence between the two of you hung thick and heavy. Sam could hear your breathing slowly getting heavier and heavier. After a moment, he sighed, deciding to speak first; seeing as you never had a problem talking to him, even when it came to the serious stuff. "Y/N?" His voice sounded gentle, his tone kind as he spoke to you.
"When are you going to leave?" You asked, continuing to stare down at your lap, as Sam felt a wave of panic - and slight hurt - settle in his stomach.
"I can leave-"
"No!" You cried out,, your hand grabbing his, quickly lifting your gaze to meet his eyes. "I mean... Um... I- uh, Do you have any plans on leaving any time soon? Y’know, going off on another adventure?" What you really wanted to ask was if he had plans of leaving you soon. You knew that Sam wasn't the kind of guy to stay in one place for too long. He had told you, and it was very apparent in the many stories that he told you, that it was only a matter of time.
He stared down at you, watching the nervous expression on your face shift to worry. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, shaking his head slightly as he opened them again, "Not right now. It might be a while. Maybe in a week or two. Not sure." Sam admitted before his expression suddenly turned serious. The intensity in his eyes caused your breath to catch in your throat, but with a somewhat defeated sigh, he dropped his eyes from you to the still-playing TV. As Indiana swooped down with his lady-love in his arms, Sam pursed his lips; his eyes narrowing in deep thought. "I'm not good at this," He muttered, and you could tell that he was speaking more to himself than anyone else.
Your brows furrowed, "At what?"
Sam hesitated for a few moments, before speaking. "Love," He explained, his brown eyes boring into yours, causing you to blink once, twice. "I've been in love before, Y/N, but... I've never felt anything like what I do towards you. It's hard for me to put words to my feelings, but... I guess what I'm trying to say is..." He trailed off, not knowing how to continue. "You make me want to be that 'settle down' type of guy, sweetheart." You swallowed thickly at his confession.
You suddenly forgot how terrible you felt - forgetting about the stuffy nose, the sore throat, and your aching muscles - you simply focused on him. His gentle touch as his hand covered yours, his words echoing through your head as you gazed into those same deep brown orbs. His words made your insides melt, and your cheeks flushed. You felt yourself falling deeper and deeper, and deeper. "Really?" You asked, you couldn't help yourself, letting out a small giggle; you felt your eyes tear up slightly.
"Yeah," Sam breathed, "Really." He repeated, reaching out to cup your warm cheek.
You sighed, "If I wasn't sick right now, I would kiss you," You stated honestly, feeling a rush of excitement course through your veins as you stared into his eyes.
Sam grinned, narrowing his eyes playfully, "I don't mind getting sick, if it means kissing you,"
You couldn't help but laugh, before turning away swiftly to let out a rough cough into the sleeve of your elbow. "First thing when I'm better, how about that?" You suggested, looking back up at him, unable to keep your wide smile off of your face.
Sam chuckled lightly, looping his arm back around your shoulders, the both of you settling back to watch the rest of the Indiana Jones movie, "I'll hold you to that."

"Do you have a darker shade of red?"
"Umm… something like this, my prince?"
"Yes, that's perfect" Rúben smiled. "This swimming pool has to be perfect. I want her to look at it the same way she looks at the ceilings in the palace."
"We'll do our best, my prince" the builder said.
"Rúben! Rúben!" someone called behind him.
"Anne? What is it?"
"It's time" she said, trying to catch her breath.
"Now?"
"Yes, now. Come" she urged him before starting to run again towards the palace.
"Is that normal?" Rúben asked as they got closer to his room.
"I'm pretty sure I was louder" Anne chuckled as another scream was heard.
"Make it stop!" Rowena yelled when Rúben and Anne walked into the room.
"It'll be over soon, princess."
"Rowena, I'm here" he said, kneeling next to the bed. "I'm here, my love."
"Rúben… Rúben, it hurts so much" she cried.
"I know it does."
"No, you don't! You men know nothing!"
"We actually don't, no" he chuckled. "But you can do this."
"I can't. I am so tired, Rúben. I just want to…" but she wasn't able to finish her sentence, only scream.
"Can you do something to help with the pain?" he asked the midwife.
"She's already taken as much as it is allowed."
"But it isn't enough!" Rowena complained, squeezing Rúben's hand with such strength he thought she may break it.
"It'll be over soon, you'll see" Lady Rice said.
"How did you do it, mother? How did you do this five times?" she cried.
"We women are stronger than we think."
"I'm not."
"You are, Rowena. You are the strongest woman I know."
"Rúben, this isn't the moment to get chee… bloody hell!" she screamed.
"Princess, it's time to push" the midwife said.
"No, no, no. I can't. I'm not ready. Mother…"
"You are ready. Isn't she, Rúben?"
"I…" he mumbled, flashbacks from his dream coming back.
"Rúben. Rúben" Rowena said, caressing his cheek and forgetting about her pain for a brief moment. "This isn't your nightmare. I may be hurting like hell, but I'm not going anywhere."
"He is the one who should leave."
"What?" both Rowena and Rúben said at the same time, looking at the midwife.
"This is no place for a man, my prince."
"I don't care. I'm not leaving her" he said.
"My prince…"
"He is staying!" Rowena yelled as she felt another contraction coming.
"Alright, then" the woman sighed.
━━━━━━❃━━━━━━
"And? What is it?" Rúben asked. Rowena had been pushing for a while, getting more and more tired as time passed, and the baby still wasn´t with them.
"I think… I think the baby is stuck."
"What?" he said, feeling his heart beating even faster than it already was.
"What can we do?" Lady Rice asked.
"Changing her position may be enough. My prince, I'm going to need you to sit behind the princess."
"Me?"
"Yes, you. Sit her between your legs and hold hers open. I think it will make the pushing easier for her, and the angle will help the baby too."
"Are you sure?"
"I've done it before, though never with the help of a man."
"Lady Rice?"
"Just do it, Rúben!" Rowena yelled again. "I want this baby out of me, and I want it now!"
"You heard her" Lady Rice chuckled.
"Oh, that's perfect. Push, princess. Push!" the midwife said.
"Is it working?" Rúben asked.
"It is. Come on, princess. Another big push!"
"That's it, Rowena. You are doing great" Lady Rice encouraged her.
"I can't… I can't…" she cried.
"The head is almost here, princess. Another push and it'll be out."
"That's our baby, Rowena. You can do it" Rúben said to her ear.
"No… I can't."
"Now, princess. Push!"
"The head, Rowena! I see the head!" Lady Rice said, tears already falling down her cheeks.
"One more push, princess."
"No… Rúben, no. I'm too tired."
"Just one more. You can do it, cupcake."
"Don't… call me… that!" she screamed as she pushed again.
"You did it, princess! You did it!" the midwife said, a baby with dark hair on her arms. A baby who was moving… and crying. Loudly.
"Those are some nice lungs" Rúben chuckled.
"He is a strong one. Just like his parents" the midwife said, putting the baby in Rowena's arms.
"A boy. It's a boy, Rúben. A healthy boy with his ten fingers and toes. Look at… Rúben, are you crying?"
"I am, yes" he said, trying to wipe away his tears. "I just… You know how scared this made me. And to see you both here, and that everything is alright… because they are alright, aren't they?" he asked the midwife.
"They are, my prince. She now will need to rest, but they both are alright."
"Good, good" he smiled while still crying.
"Why don't you hold him while they finish cleaning her up?" Lady Rice said.
"Me?"
"You are his father, aren't you?" she chuckled.
"Yes, of course" he said, carefully moving from the bed to not hurt Rowena and letting the nurses do their job.
"He looks so tiny on those arms of yours" Rowena laughed.
"But he wasn't tiny" the midwife chuckled.
"Oh, I know" she laughed again. "Rúben… Rúben, are you sure you are alright?"
"Better than ever" he said as he kissed the baby's head. His son.
"Mother… Is this why you got pregnant so many times? Because seeing father with us just made you want to make more babies?"
"It may have been one of the reasons, yes" Lady Rice laughed. "Do you have a name yet?"
"We don't. But we thought about something with an R. It's like our letter. Rowena, Rúben, Rice, ruby…" she said, touching the little stone hanging around her neck.
"Rafael."
"What?
"Rafael. He looks like a Rafael, don't you think?" Rúben said, not lifting his eyes from the baby. He still couldn't believe he was real.
"Prince Rafael sounds lovely" Lady Rice said. "And he seems to like it" she chuckled when the baby started crying again.
"Is that a cry of liking it?" Rúben asked with a worried look.
"And of mother, I'm hungry."
"Oh, I see. Umm…"
"Give him to me" Rowena said, stretching her arms. "Let's just hope he didn't get your appetite."
"Mine? Who is the one who could eat a whole tray of cupcakes in one go… cupcake?" he asked with a teasing smile.
"Shh!"
"Don't shush me, Romina."
"Mother, I will retract myself from what I said earlier. I don't want to have more babies anymore. I hate men."
"Oh, I also said that so many times, Rowena" Lady Rice laughed. "It didn't work, tho. When you've met the one, there is nothing you can do about it."
"Not even running away?"
"Nothing" she repeated.
"We are stuck together, Rowena. You said it yourself" Rúben smiled. That smile.
"I guess we are, yes" she sighed, trying to hide her smile and thinking about the girl who had arrived at that same palace a few years ago.
A girl who could have never imagined that she would enjoy living in that new country as much as she did. That she would risk her life for it and its people. That she would end up falling crazy in love with the stupid handsome boy who couldn't get her name right. A boy who was now a man. Her husband. The father of her son. Her home. The one. Rúben.

Madrid Week 3: Flashbacks
Hola a todxs! It’s Niko back with week 3 of studying abroad in Madrid. Time is STILL passing by really fast and slow at the same time, so I'll talk about it again — I’ve been here less than a month and it’s felt like half a year, but the days go by quickly. I don’t think that will stop anytime soon, but I’m here for it. More perceived time = more life lived, and I hope that my weeks don't start blending together anytime soon.
As promised in week 2, I wanted to spend this blog talking about my trip to Granada last weekend. Granada is a small Spanish town in the southern region of Spain called Andalucía. It’s got a population of around 230,000 people — nearly the exact same as my hometown of Arlington, VA, which is a suburb outside of Washington, DC. However, in place of tree lined residential neighborhoods and modern office buildings, Granada is filled with narrow cobblestone streets bordered by low, densely packed buildings and intensely intricate churches/palaces built hundreds of years ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That palace — La Alhambra — is the largest tourist attraction in Granada, and was one of the main reasons I wanted to visit it (also, a big shout out to Emma for hosting me, a friend of mine from high school doing her semester in Granada!!). It’s a massive Moorish palace on a hill that overlooks the entire city. The Moors, who were North African Muslims, conquered much of the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century. La Alhambra was slowly built between the years 1238 and 1358, during the reigns of Ibn al-Aḥmar and his successors.
With that said, my trip to Granada last weekend was not my first time seeing La Alhambra. As I mentioned briefly in week 0's blog, I took a trip to Spain with my 8th grade Spanish class for a week. That was 7 years ago. We hit most of the main touristic Spanish cities within that time, Granada included.
So, walking through the palace last weekend triggered a slow trickle of distant memories, fuzzy enough that I couldn’t remember details, but potent enough that I could remember how I felt. Some things had changed about the palace, many things stayed the same. I still felt the same sense of awe I did 7 years ago witnessing the incredible detail hand-carved into every surface, or seeing the palace perfectly reflected in a courtyard’s pool. The difference was that this time, I was exploring alone.

I think that during this trip, I really gained an appreciation — and curiosity — of solo travel. Although I was with my friend Emma much of the time, I felt a great deal of peace in exploring La Alhambra at my own pace. Without anyone else to turn to, I was forced to be present and attuned to my surroundings, and that enabled me to appreciate them that much more.
I think that part of that appreciation, however, was derived from the sense of independence and freedom I had existing alone in Granada. Going into college, being alone terrified me. I would step into the dining hall for lunch and wander through the common spaces, looking for a familiar face I could share a meal with. Now, I try my best to cherish the moments in which I can connect more to myself, whether that be during a meal, practicing a hobby, or exploring an ancient Moorish palace. That’s only something I've been able to move towards through consistent practice -- AKA, spending deliberate time alone. I hope to continue deepening that connection throughout this semester solo-exploring Spain and Europe, which I know is something I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from La Alhambra, Emma and I explored the city and its various landmarks (El Albaicin, a predominantly Muslim neighborhood, the Granada Cathedral, the Monastery of San Jeronimo, the Mirador de San Miguel Alto [and an epic sunset], and even a jazz-esque show with Spanish flair from a band at a local music club). More pictures below.

On the way back home, we stopped at a rest stop for the bus, and I couldn’t help but notice how familiar it seemed. It conjured up a nostalgic feeling that could have only come from my first trip in Spain — I realized we had stopped at the same station.
For old time’s sake, I bought a Kinder Egg Sorpresa. These things were a huge deal to me in 8th grade, as they are banned in the USA for being a ‘choking hazard’.  Inside the chocolate exterior was a little plastic goat toy that will now serve as the centerpiece of our dining room table.
Tumblr media
It’s funny to think how much of a different person I am from the 13 year old on vacation with his school friends and Spanish teachers. But it’s also comforting to know that all of these memories I carry with me explain the person I am today.
This week, I got a little more into school groove, took a rollerblading route, visited the Reina Sofia museum and went to see some amazing techno DJs over the weekend. Per usual, check out the photo captions for more info on the content this week :).
Hasta luego,

A Look Back at Our Anniversary
Tumblr media
37 Years and counting …
1983 …forty one years ago. 1985 …thirty nine years ago. 1987 …thirty seven years ago. 1992 …thirty two years ago. 1995 …twenty nine years ago. Events in a family’s life; our lives. When as a young man, such milestones were beyond my ken and comprehension. In this time in our lives, they seem only yesterday. Time is almost impossible to understand and seems only to be a man made construct designed to stress and make one weary. Only now matters …yet, the timeline of struggles and triumphs can’t be ignored nor would I wish such a thing. It made Brent Rich (moi), Kim Rich, Josh Rich, Brendan Rich and Erik Rich who they are …now. That being said, I’m so proud of our timeline and who we are as a family.
By extension and the passage of time, we’ve added to our story: Kaitlyn, Michaela, Brianna, Payton, Sadie, Grayson and Cooper. All of this since 1983 and is now. It’s good to remember what you were so as to love where you are …now. Now, I’m married to a wonderful woman with three sons, four grandchildren and a whole slew of pups. I could never have foreseen such. What follows are a few message exchanges I’ve had with my wife on past anniversaries. From years back but happening …now.
Happy 37th Anniversary I married Kimberly Elaine Hall on May 23rd, 1987. We had tough circumstances; we worked multiple jobs while taking full class loads and raising baby Josh. We were poor ... we lived on less than $5000 a year and needed WIC and other assistance, but we both graduated at the top of our respective classes and Josh discovered he liked beans and no AC. We drove our '79 Ford Granada, that I paid $800 for, until it literally blew .... and we pushed it up the street into our yard. We raised three boys the best we could just being kids ourselves and our marriage took some painful episodes that I didn't know if we'd endure. We bought a modest house and made a life for the Rich family. Heartbreaks, deaths, disasters, struggles occurred as they always do... and sometimes we stayed together for just the kids; but a funny thing happened... we remembered that we liked hanging around each other, that we wanted to try new things , we started saying "no" to others and less to ourselves and we realized we were a good team, great friends and a super husband and wife. We traveled throughout Texas and we traveled the world and made wonderful friends. Who'd thought 36 years would pass so quickly, but it's cool ... we got 36+ more and places to see and things to do ... I guess you'll hang around?
May 23, 1987 ... Kim and I with who were then our close friends got married at First Assembly of God. She first came into my life in February of 1983. It was love at first sight for me as she took my breath away. It would be a hard road of gentlemanly pursuit before my love was no longer an unrequited one. We were forced to grow up too fast and much of youth was lost to us amid multiple jobs, countless hours of class and study, living poor and having heartbreaks too painful to mention. Over the years, we became lost among Boy Scout trips, Soccer, baseball, football, Vacation Bible Schools, homework and my coaching baseball for 12 years. It all seemed a blur.... as our boys grew to men. When the dust settled, there we were, not the same people we were in 1990. We had grown apart but learned about each other as much as a contradiction as this seems. We learned that pain fades as time rolls forward and rediscovery can be an adventure. We became our own best friends as our circle of “friends" began to diminish. We stayed here to look after our parents...but suddenly the world opened up to us and friends of a like mind entered our world and our lives became an 180 degree turn around from what we thought it would be in 1987, 1991, 1996, or 2005. There is no separating one from the other. So, today I celebrate not just 33 years to the same woman, but seeing how many different ways I could love this ever changing beauty. Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary Brent Rich! I can't believe that it has been 30 years. You have so eloquently put into words so many of my same thoughts and feelings. I can't wait to see what t he next 30 bring. More trips Spain,France and back to Scotland and Ireland for sure. I am sure lots of money. But whatever it will be an adventure and we will experience it together. 💏💋❤🌷🥂

Day 11: In Which I Finally Go To A Good Aquarium
There has been, as any of the particularly astute fan of my blog may also have noted, a distinct and troubling lack of zoo visits on this journey. This wasn't for lack of trying, or the development of a concern for animal welfare that now outweighed the thrill of getting to go “look! A cheetah! …why's he so sad?”, no. The simple reason for the lack of fauna on this trip (apart from a fish, who are shit) was down to the placement of these zoos and how incredibly difficult they had been to get to, all being located, as they were, miles and effing miles outside of the city limits.
Granada, however, offered…if not a full, proper zoo, at least a reasonable facsimile in the form of the science park.
The science park was, as the name suggests a compound that housed a bunch of scientific exhibits (even though the ‘science’ on display appeared to be limited, mostly to the science of stuff gently spinning.
Look at that sucker go
As well as a biodome (a big tropical room that was to serve as this trip’s zoo replacement) a small bird of prey sanctuary, a butterfly house, a museum or three, astronomy gardens and a waffle house, probably. I'm not sure about the last one, but there were loads of cafes and one of them probably did serve waffles. So that's where I went. The park, not the cafe. I had a packed lunch.
I went online and checked out tickets. They were reasonably priced, however, as with the Alhambra the day previous, the Biodome needed a pre-allocated time slot to be booked before you could visit and there appeared to be none left. Was this going to be my first zoo-less vagrancy?
…no. It wasn't. I went to the science park and asked to go into the zoo bit, in person and they said yes and even Gave me a time-slot only five minutes after my arrival, so hah.
Initially, I found myself quite annoyed by the concept of having a specific time at which I had to visit the Biodome and even more annoyed by the subsequent time limit they had placed on being allowed to enjoy it. One hour, to be precise. The Nazis. Regardless, I accepted my fate, listened to the relevant rules and regulations that one was to adhere to during a visit to the dome - one of which was not to bring any food in. I chuckled and agreed, quietly zipping my bag up which contained an entire, full loaf of bread which I had forgotten to remove from it in the morning and stepped inside.
As it turned out, being given an allotted time was more of a blessing than a curse as, though it did add a slight pressure to see the entire thing in the apportioned temporal limits, it also had the very pleasing effect of putting me amongst a small group of quiet and well behaved other visitors for my visit, rather than a pulsing mass of stupid flesh, as previous, other, worse institutions has allowed. I didn't have to swim through dullards to see a single thing and it was right good.
The Biodome itself was genuinely pretty good. It started with the third aquarium of my trip
Tumblr media
Great.
But that was fine because it was definitely the best of them all
Tumblr media
With the notable exception of this big boi
And wound slowly from the aquatic exhibits into a big hot room with all crocodiles and birds and monkeys in it and it was lovely. Far too warm, to be honest, but I can forgive that of a single room that houses both lemurs
Tumblr media
Yes.
And otters
Tumblr media
Yes-er.
I milled around a little, watching an otter try to crack a rock open on its tummy using another, different rock for ages and ages, before slowly ambling out, having spend 55 minutes there. A comfortable five before I would officially be a criminal (although quite what they could do if I decided to stay longer wasn't clear.)
Worth noting, too, that 55 minutes was the same length of time I spent at the Seville aquarium but the experience was one third of the price and ten times as good. Fuck you Seville aquarium and also Ryanair.
The park was due to close early today, it being a Sunday and also the winter, so I did rather feel like I had to squeeze the rest of my visit of the really quite substantial park into a shorter time than I would have liked. I had a look, first, at an exhibit of disappointingly professional taxidermy
Tumblr media
What's the point if their eye-sockets aren't even exploding...
Before I ambled outside into the very pleasant weather of the outdoorsy parts, where I caught the tail end of an exotic bird flight display, which I did not understand a single word of but which I imagine were to the effects of “birds are brilliant!”, then had a quick gawk at the butterfly house which I didn't enjoy very much owing to the sheer density of people in it and the fact that butterflies, while pretty, are still just gross insects that fly at your face purely to intimidate you.
I darted to the astronomy garden to have a look at some sundials and absolutely delighted in watching the other visitors trying to take pictures of them, but all uniformly stood in positions from which their shadows completely obscured those cast by the dial
Tumblr media
Idet.
And even quickly managed a tertiary look around a big standard exhibit on the human body
Tumblr media
Yeah, I'm made of veins; tell me something I don't know...
Before closing time loomed and I felt it prudent to leave. I'd only been there about three hours, but honestly could have spent another two there, easily - another three would have been silly - and I had a really very nice time in the process. It was unlikely that I wouldn't, to be honest, given that the science park combined literally everything I like to do on these trips into one single low-priced compound; a natural history museum with a bit of a zoo attached; a lovely warm park to have a walk around it and - if I had had the time - even a big tall observation tower that I could have gone up and pretended I was an angry god from
Tumblr media
Also it had giants ants.
However good it was, though, it was now closed while the hour remained reasonably early. I walked, then, to a nearby park to enjoy a late lunch on a bench, andfollowed by a full and comprehensive exploration of the park itself which was pleasant if not exactly thrilling.
Tumblr media
Wahoo.
I made the thirty minute walk back to my last night at the hostel, determined not to nap only to - to literally no one's surprise but my own - fall asleep for an hour upon returning. I made a quick excursion to the nearby Carrefour, which I had visited every single day I had been here and twice on one of them, and bought some absolutely foul microwavable carbonara which I ate.unhappily in a crowded mess hall before returning to bed having had, other than the very last part of it, really quite a nice day.
I promise I'll get assaulted by another donkey or something soon.

Spain: Unveiling the Land of Flamenco and Tapas
Tumblr media
Spain, the land of rich history, vibrant culture, and enchanting landscapes, has long been a favorite destination for travelers around the world. From the bustling streets of Barcelona to the serene countryside of Andalusia, Spain offers a diverse array of experiences that cater to every kind of traveler. In this comprehensive travel guide, we'll walk you through the essential aspects of preparing for your Spanish adventure, from securing a visa to exploring the best places to visit, whether you prefer the bustling cities or quaint countryside. We'll also offer insights into transportation options, accommodation choices, and tips for adventurous souls who want to trek and camp in Spain's beautiful wilderness.
Preparation Before Visiting Spain:
Before setting off on your Spanish adventure, it's crucial to ensure you have all the necessary documentation. If you're a citizen of the European Union, you won't need a visa to enter Spain, but other international visitors will. To obtain a tourist visa, you'll typically need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, a return flight ticket, and evidence of financial means to support your stay. Be sure to check the Spanish consulate or embassy in your home country for specific visa requirements and application procedures.
Places to Visit in Spain:
Spain boasts a plethora of iconic destinations. Barcelona beckons with its architectural marvels, including Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. Madrid, the country's capital, is a treasure trove of art, culture, and history, with attractions like the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace. Seville, Granada, and Cordoba in Andalusia offer a taste of Spain's Moorish past and stunning architectural wonders, such as the Alhambra. Don't forget to explore Valencia, San Sebastian, and the beautiful beaches of Costa del Sol. Each city and region in Spain has its unique charm, making it a diverse and captivating destination.
Places to Visit in Small Towns and Countryside:
While Spain's cities are captivating, its small towns and countryside are equally enchanting. Explore the historic streets of Ronda, stroll through the white-washed villages of Andalusia like Mijas and Ronda, or lose yourself in the medieval wonder of Cuenca. The Spanish countryside offers breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling vineyards of La Rioja to the rugged terrain of Picos de Europa National Park. To truly immerse yourself in Spain's rural beauty, consider visiting the Pyrenees, where you can explore charming villages and stunning mountain scenery.
Traveling by Personal Vehicle or Public Transport:
Whether to travel by personal vehicle or public transport in Spain depends on your preferences and itinerary. In major cities like Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, public transportation, including buses and subways, is efficient and convenient. For traveling between cities, Spain's high-speed train network (AVE) is an excellent option. However, if you plan to explore the countryside extensively, renting a car may provide more flexibility. Spain's road network is well-maintained, and scenic routes are abundant.
Booking Accommodation:
Accommodation options in Spain range from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels and unique experiences like couch surfing. Websites and apps like Airbnb, Booking.com, and Hostelworld make it easy to find accommodation that suits your budget and preferences. If you're looking for budget-friendly options, consider staying in "pensiones" or "casas rurales" in small towns, and if you're feeling adventurous, explore the world of couch surfing for a more immersive experience.
Renting a Vehicle as a Tourist and Traffic Rules:
Renting a vehicle as a tourist in Spain is straightforward. Major international car rental companies have offices at airports and cities. To rent, you typically need a valid driver's license, a credit card, and must be at least 21 years old. Remember to drive on the right side of the road, obey speed limits, and always carry your driver's license, passport, and rental documents. Spain enforces strict anti-drunk driving laws, so avoid alcohol when driving.
Hiking and Solo Camping:
Spain offers incredible opportunities for hiking and solo camping. The Camino de Santiago is a famous pilgrimage route that spans the entire country. If you're a fan of coastal beauty, the Costa Brava's rugged trails are perfect. Inland, explore the Sierra de Grazalema or Picos de Europa for stunning mountain landscapes. While camping is permitted in some areas, it's essential to check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits. Always leave no trace and respect the environment.
Applying for an International Driving License in Spain:
If you plan to drive in Spain and your driver's license is not in Spanish or another EU language, you may need an International Driving Permit Spain (IDP). You can apply for an IDP in your home country before your trip. It's a good idea to have one even if it's not always required. It will ensure that you can drive with confidence and ease throughout your Spanish adventure.
As you embark on your journey to Spain, keep in mind that this guide is just the beginning. Spain is a country of endless discoveries, where each corner holds a new surprise. So, pack your bags, secure your visa, and get ready to savor the flavors, history, and culture of Spain – it's a travel experience you won't soon forget.

Atletico striker Griezmann knew the question was coming, having been treated with hostility before at the MetLife Stadium, and he was ready to give a blunt and honest answer.
"I've been through his situation because I've done things that hurt the club," Griezmann said. "The best thing I can do is keep quiet, work hard, like other players, and go back to the club. It's in the coach's plan. It's not easy for him and I hope the issue is resolved. It's the best for the club, for Felix and for everyone."
Griezmann spoke to La Liga online days after Atlético fans booed Felix. Griezmann knows what it's like after his embarrassing move from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona in 2019. That meant when he returned to the team two years later, he had to work really hard to win back the love of the fans.
Tumblr media
Felix is in a very similar situation right now. He said in July that he wanted to leave Atletico Madrid and join Barcelona. The Portugal international has remained popular with Atletico fans despite his falling out with manager Diego Simeone. His public request for a move to Barcelona and his decision not to play for Atletico Madrid have wiped out any sympathy from the fans.
"This is a player who is against Atletico Madrid, he doesn't want to be here," Gabi, the former captain who helped Atletico to the La Liga title in 2014, said last week.
"It must be difficult for the club and the fans to hear those words. If he had the chance to leave, the club would definitely open the door for him, but the result needs to be satisfactory for both parties. My suggestion is that he should stop making remarks and give him a chance. Show that he's a great player. He hasn't done that yet."
When Diego Simeone and his team led Atletico's pre-season training in Segovia in July this year, there seemed to be a glimmer of hope that Felix's stay at the team could turn around.
But it would be a mistake to be optimistic, as the relationship between the stern Diego Simeone and the creative Felix has broken down completely and there is little sign that either side wants to mend it.
Felix missed Atletico's first two friendly games through injury, before Diego Simeone didn't think he was physically or mentally ready for the other two. Felix came off the bench in the first round of La Liga in Atletico Madrid's 3-1 victory over Granada in the 2023-24 season. He was sidelined for Atletico's 0-0 draw with Betis on Sunday due to minor ankle discomfort.
Ahead of the Betis match, CAB사이트 explained his thoughts on the current situation: "Felix has some problems again and cannot play. My real concern is the team, and those who are working hard."
Diego Simeone's actions proved his words true. Retaining Lino, who was on loan at Valencia last season, and Rodrygo Riquelme, Girona, have increased his options in attack. There are also Griezmann, Depay, Morata and Correa. Now even if Felix wants to stay, there are fewer and fewer places left for him in the Atletico Madrid lineup.
This is a huge headache for Atletico Madrid CEO Marin. He previously expressed understanding for the club's record signing, but the team showed little support for the player this summer, even changing his jersey number twice.
Felix wore the number 7 in his first three and a half seasons with Atletico Madrid. But Griezmann (who wore No. 8 last season) has re-selected the number, so Felix was given No. 17 when he returned from loan at Chelsea. Then, newly signed left-back Garland took No. 17 (he wore it at Celta Vigo), so Felix has now switched to No. 18, whether he likes it or not.
Meanwhile, Mendes, Marin and Felix's agent, is looking for a solution. Atletico's best-case scenario is to sell Felix to Benfica and recoup as much as possible of the 127 million euros they paid Benfica in the summer of 2019. Felix was just 19 at the time (£108.2m, $137.7m at today's exchange rates).
When Felix was agreed to join Chelsea on loan for the second half of the Premier League's 2022-23 season in January last year, it was hoped that he would show his worth in the Premier League. However, things didn't go as planned. Six months in England has only increased concerns about his attitude and commitment to running off the ball.
He could have moved to Al-Hilal earlier this summer, but Atletico would have preferred a hefty transfer fee to a loan move. Felix himself is not a fan of a move to the Saudi league, while Al-Hilal has turned his attention to signing Neymar from PSG.
As the transfer window progressed, it became clear that Atletico's only possible solution was to loan Felix out again. Atletico Madrid's position is that they want to charge a fee for this to cover the annual installment of 15 million euros in his contract with the team until 2027. They also hope that the club that rents him will be able to pay his annual salary (including tax). That would bring the total to around €25 million a year.
Such figures are somewhat unrealistic for Barcelona, whose finances mean that they cannot currently register all their players in La Liga. Martinez, who signed this summer, and Marcos Alonso and Pena, who have completed their contract extensions, are currently unable to play for Harvey. At the same time, the club is working hard to finalize a loan deal for Cancelo from Manchester City this week.
As we all know, Harvey also has serious doubts about the introduction of Felix. He acknowledged that the 23-year-old has a strong ability on the ball, but also has concerns about his efficiency on the field and believes that the team already has a lot of quality players in his position.
Barcelona president Laporta is a huge fan of Felix and everyone recognizes that the player has a rare quality that excites fans. What Laporta is eager to do is to attract more fans to the team's temporary home in Montevischi - the Olympic Stadium to watch the game. Recently, Barcelona's management has been reorganized. Deco is the sports director, and his level is higher than that of Alemani, which also makes Felix more likely to come to Barcelona.
Everything points to another high-stakes game between Atletico and Barca, likely to continue until the closing hours of the transfer window, like Griezmann's frustrating move to Barca in 2019 Same.
Atletico Madrid always give people a feeling that they can achieve good results in negotiations with Barcelona. Although things might be different now given the changes in Barca's management. Mendes is now also close with Laporta and Marin.
It all sets the stage for more potential drama between the two sides ahead of the transfer deadline on Friday 1 September (11pm UK time).
"You can't gift Barcelona too much because they are your opponents," former Atletico Madrid right-back Juanfran said last week.
"Maybe it's just a loan, if the player doesn't want to stay here, you will have an agreement with Barca. You have a good relationship with Barca and they will pay for the loan. But when Felix is playing for your direct competitor, you can't pay. His salary. Atletico have to defend their interests. To let Felix go for free or pay him when he is playing for another team is madness in my opinion."

Barcelona-Sitges-Barcelona, with Buster Keaton, Luis Alonso and Norma and Natalie Talmadge
[3-IX-1930]
The first photographs of Buster Keaton, Luis Alonso (1) and Norma and Natalie Talmadge, taken in Santander, in Granada, Madrid, etc, moved us all. With such a special and fantastic emotion that only movie stars provoke: wonder. Shadows in the distance approach. The figures of light from l'écran, the shining marionettes from black and white, are among us in the flesh. This flesh from the movie stars who seem to flash in and out of existence, as if they were nothing more than an illusion of images.
And here relies precisely the key to their success: their immateriality, their unreal and intangible quality.
The distance and the unnaturalizing photography of cinema and of the réclame have turned them into mythical and impossible beings, loaded with all the advantages of admiration, without any of the disadvantages of humanity.
✼ ✼ ✼
To round off the atmosphere of expectation and shock that the approach of the "luminous shadows" of the cinema generates, our stars (the Talmadges, Keaton and Alonso) have passed through our country in an exceptional way. This has not allowed us to forget the prodigiousness of cinema. All of them locked inside of a blue 90 HP Rolls, fast, restless and improvised, without any planning, fixed route or time. From one place to another, capriciously, using the freedom that the vacation time at the Studios allowed them.
This disorientation made it unlikely that we would be able to meet them in Barcelona. And it was even more unclear if they were in the mood.
✼ ✼ ✼
Nevertheless, they arrived at the Ritz on Friday night at 11 p.m. Tired and tanned.
And we greeted all four of them in the hotel lobby on Saturday at noon.
Norma Talmadge, whose beauty stays the same outside the celluloid, is so naturally beautiful, "young" and elegant as she is in her best pictures.
Her sister Natalie, Keaton's wife, is very thin and most sympathetic.
Buster Keaton, red as hell due to the sun of the fifteen-day road trip through Spain, has such a simple face that touches your heart, but the effect doesn't last. Because Buster Keaton is an authentic comedian, a true artist at all times. And he demonstrates this by explaining to us his hunting adventures in Andalusia:
"There are so many partridges that you can kill them with the blow of a cane. Bam! And into your bag."
With a priceless mimicry, we find him in the garden grabbing one of the ice cubs from the hotel ice buckets and taking a bite and eating a finger and all (his cut off index finger, so the trick turned out splendid).
Luis Alonso is a magnificent young lad. With all that romantic hair from “The Love Mart” and those superb looks which only seemed possible for the beautiful incredibility of cinema. Good fellow, modest and kind, astonishing. In a way you wouldn't believe he is a cinema star.
We take photographs of them non-stop and make them a little dizzy. Buster Keaton is sweating like a pig. And the ladies embrace the heat as a compliment from the "burning Spain".
"Spain is very hot!" but they are suffocating.
"Shall we go to the beach?" says Alonso.
"Very good!" cries out Keaton.
"To Sitges," we propose.
✼ ✼ ✼
In the first place we pass by an establishment to look for bathing suits. These are given as a gift, naturally.
At the door of the shop a crowd of people would give him the shirt he is wearing. The fact that Norma Talmadge, Buster Keaton and Luis Alonso are just a few steps away from them and in the flesh makes people turn their heads. Especially children. Children can't believe they are in front of "Pamplinas"(2).
"El comparsa! El comparsa!" they yelled.
One hour later we're at the “Vila Blanca". It's a very sunny day. The sea seems like a cradle.
Luis Alonso and Buster Keaton go swimming. The ladies are too tired.
"How do you like Catalonia?" we ask while they rest under the shade of an awning.
"A beauty. It is brighter here than anywhere else we have been."
"What do you like the most from what you've seen in Spain?"
"Everything. Everything. But Granada...Oh, Granada! Unforgettable. As well as Barcelona. It's a shame we cannot see more of it. We have so little time! Tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock we're setting off to Paris.”
While we have lunch, Keaton gives us his opinion regarding the talkies.
"Admirable. You see, I can sing alright. You'll hear... the rain fall."
"What are the actors you like the most?"
"Greta Garbo and Lon Chaney."
"Unfortunately," said Alonso, "we have been informed of his death with great regret. He was an intimate friend of Buster. And ours."
"Of all the films you've done, which one do you like the most?"
"Three Ages," said Keaton.
And Alonso and Norma:
"We say ''Camille".
✼ ✼ ✼
We've done what we could to catch Buster Keaton laughing. Impossible. As soon as a camera is pointing at him he looks like someone threw a bucket of ice water over him.
"A smile for me, Mr. Keaton," I ask him, making use of my qualities of a young lady.
Buster Keaton becomes more serious than ever.
"No! No! Laughing is forbidden."
A couple of steps away, the relentless "Metro" keeps an eye on him with his business contract in his hands.
"Laughing is forbidden."
In other words: it is forbidden to forget that Buster Keaton is "the man who doesn't laugh".
✼ ✼ ✼
It seemed as though half of the town of Sitges was around our table.
Alonso takes a child in his arms and caresses him.
"What's your name, maco?(3)"
The child cries in reply and the family scolds him, bewildered.
"Take good care of this boy, ma'am," shout some boys at the fortunate mother.
"This child sure is at risk of kidnapping!"
Then the signing begins. Albums, books of verse, notebooks, lottery tickets. Everything. Buster Keaton, Luis Alonso and Norma and Natalie Talmadge cannot keep up with all of their eight hands at the same time.
That's why the owner of the hotel doesn't let Luis Alonso escape, for he is the one who is paying.
✼ ✼ ✼
We flee.
The coasts of Garraf are a labyrinth of light at this hour. A labyrinth in which we wouldn't mind getting lost.
But we soon find ourselves in the Diagonal, and in the twinkling of an eye we're at the Ritz again. Our guests want to take a nap. Buster Keaton lets us know he's exhausted from driving so much.
We let them. And we say goodbye.
"Goodbye!" say the ladies.
"Goodbye," says Alonso.
Keaton asks us how to say goodbye in Catalan.
"Adéu," we say.
"Then...adéu," he says with a laugh. A charming, full of grace and optimism laugh.
A laugh that won't appear in any photograph or film.
(1) Gilbert Roland, born Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso.
(2) “Pamplinas” is the nickname of Buster Keaton in Spain. “El comparsa” is the title under which the film “Spite Marriage” was released in Spain.
(3) maco is a very common affectionate term in Catalan.

The Early Bird Gets the Kiss (Not the Water Bucket)
Fandom: The Old Guard (Movie 2020)
Pairing: Joe x Nicky
Read on AO3
                                                           ///
Joe did not even stir when Nicky flung the curtains open, letting in the bright Mediterranean sunshine. Unclasping the window allowed the breeze to gently drift into the bedroom, accompanied faintly by the sounds of humanity from the streets below. They had spent yesterday recovering from the jet lag of travelling from Santiago to Granada, but Nicky was determined to visit the Alcaiceria today.
Moving towards the bed, Nicky sat down softly. Joe had since curled into Nicky’s spot from where he had left him on the other side of the bed this morning. Reaching out, Nicky gently ran his fingers through Joe’s thick curls, taking care not to tug on them. Joe let out a pleased sound and stretched his neck, seeking more of the affection Nicky was only too happy to give. Nicky spent some minutes just sitting there, petting Joe’s hair, until the sound of something breaking elsewhere in the house brought him back to Earth. Hopefully that was Nile and not the stray cat she had brought in last night. They had promised Nile they’d show her around the city, since it was her first time here. The girl had been excited enough to promise to wake up early for them, as Nicky had said the market could be enjoyed best in the morning before it got too crowded. It was only fair Joe got up too.
Leaning down, Nicky placed a gentle kiss on top of the light wrinkles next to Joe’s eyes. They were one of Nicky’s favorite parts of Joe, evidence of a first life so filled with joy the lines had etched themselves onto his beloved’s face for a thousand years.
“mmmhmmm” Joe slurred as he turned his head to bury himself deeper into the pillow. Huffing a laugh, Nicky kept kissing the patches of skin he could reach, moving from cheek to forehead to neck to the back of Joe’s ear. “-olo….”
“Buono giorno, ya amar. Time to get up.” Nicky whispered to Joe.
“mmmhhhmmmm. Five minutes.”
Nicky laughed. “As if it’s ever five minutes with you Joe.”
“Three minutes.”
Shoulders shaking with withheld laughter, Nicky gently pressed his hand more firmly into Joe’s hair, squeezing the curls once.
“Colo!” Joe sleep-shouted.
“Up, Joe!”
“Three minutes. Promise.” Joe said, face scrunched up as he fought to keep his eyes closed.
Sighing, Nicky released his hold on Joe’s hair, ignoring the whine from his husband as he got up and opened their bags. If Joe was going to insist on delaying in bed, and he always did, might as well set every thing out for him to save the time later. Once he had laid out the short-sleeved button up and jeans, as well as Joe’s favorite baseball cap, he removed Joe’s toiletries, setting them up in their bathroom with a spare towel from the closet.
When he went back to their bedroom, as expected, Joe was still cocooned into his blankets, face half buried. Shaking his head, Nicky went to Joe, placing one hand on his hip. He shook it quickly, shaking Joe with it till Joe let out a long whine. “Colo. You’re so mean.”
“Three minutes are up hayati. I’ve set up everything you need, let’s go.”
Joe remained still under his touch for another moment before he began wiggling. Nicky stood back as Joe untangled himself from the blankets and sat up, leaning against the headboard. He let out a long yawn, one hand lazily rubbing the crust from his eyes. Finally, Joe opened his beautiful obsidian eyes, shining as always with love and life. “Good morning, my love.”
Nicky snorted, shaking his head when Joe held out a hand. “Yes, great morning, it only took me half an hour to wake you up instead of the usual hour. Get up.”
Joe arranged his face into a big pout, bottom lip jutting out as his eyes blinked rapidly. Nicky merely raised an eyebrow at him, refusing to be charmed today. “No. Get up.”
“So cruel to me Nicky. You wound me so early in the day.” Joe exclaimed, dramatically clutching at his heart with one hand while his other arm covered his eyes.
“You better not make me repeat myself Joe.”
Joe peeked one eye out from beneath his arm. “Or?”
“Or I will make you get up this early every day we are here.” Nicky threatened.
Joe gasped, before sticking his tongue out at him.
Nicky rolled his eyes. “It’s not even that early!”
“It’s 7:00 in the morning!”
Nicky raised an eyebrow at him. “Exactly.”
Joe tipped his head back till it hit the wall. “Fine.”
A small smile appeared on Nicky’s face. He leaned to pat Joe’s ankle. “Good. Get up. Nile seems ready to climb the walls out of excitement to see the Alhambra and I do not know how long I will be able to keep her from coming in to deal with you herself.”
Joe sighed, shoulders slumping. “Ok.”
Nodding, Nicky gestured at the chair next to the window. “Your clothes are in the chair, and I’ve already left a towel for you in the bathroom.”
Joe hummed in acknowledgement.
Nicky turned back, placing one hand on his waist. “I swear Joe, if you are not ready in twenty minutes, I will allow Nile to throw a bucket of cold water on you anyways.”
Joe laughed, knowing an empty threat when he heard it. Well. 80% sure it was an empty threat. “Of course.”
Nicky gave him one last look before turning around to leave the room, when Joe’s arm shot out to grab his wrist. Nicky yelped as he nearly went sprawling on the floor. “Joe!”
Once upright, he glared at his husband, only to be met with a sheepish expression. “Sorry.”
“What is it?” Nicky asked, the slightest irritation seeping into his voice.
“You forgot something.” Joe said, as he knelt on the bed to be at eye level with him.
Nicky’s brows furrowed as he ran through a mental checklist. “No I didn’t.”
Joe shook his head. “No, you definitely did.”
Huffing, Nicky asked, “What did I forget?”
Smiling wide enough to hurt his cheeks, Joe cupped Nicky’s face with both hands. “This.”
He leaned in to press a long kiss to Nicky’s lips, filled with so much love that Nicky melted, body tipping forward till it collided with Joe’s who effortlessly maneuvered an arm to wrap around Nicky’s waist. When they parted, they stayed, foreheads pressed together.
“I love you Nicky.” Joe said, before adding impishly, “Even when you forget to kiss me properly in the morning.”
Nicky felt heat painting his cheeks red, but bit his lip. “You are so ridiculous. Go shower.”
Joe nuzzled nose against Nicky’s. “You’re forgiven, even if you haven’t told me you love me.”
Now it was Nicky’s turn to sigh dramatically. He pushed himself away, and schooled his face into as stern a look as he could manage. “Ok enough, get ready, or both Nile and I will throw cold water on you.”
Laughing, Joe nodded. “Yes Nicky.”
Nicky waited till Joe got distracted to dart in to press one last kiss against Joe’s lips.  Nicky exited the bedroom with a pleased look on his face.
Now to see if Nile was awake. And check if the damned cat had finally managed to break the ugly flower vase Andy had bought thirty years ago.
