ive said before that you should go to the opera and the symphony because it might be better than you expect. but i feel the need to make it clear that you should also go to terrible garage band concerts and middle school orchestra festivals and your nephew's first-grade choir concert and your friend's musical theater show and every type of concert on the earth. because yeah. sometimes it'll suck and you might hate it. but at least one of those things is guaranteed to be in your price range. and your favorite musician in the world would never have dedicated their life to the art that they make if nobody showed up to cheer them on

When an Orchestra Was No Place for a Woman (Farah Nayeri, The New York Times, Dec 23 2019)
"The Vienna Philharmonic, established in 1842, has been weighed down by history and by tradition, and by a somewhat convoluted recruitment process.
All players are recruited from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.
And until 1997, the opera would not allow women to audition for the philharmonic.
(The Vienna Philharmonic did have a woman performing regularly with it by then — the harpist Anna Lelkes played with them for 26 years, but was not allowed to join formally, and did not receive full payment, until 1997.) (…)
Women still make up less than half of most orchestras in Continental Europe.
An August 2019 survey by two University College London academics showed that in Continental orchestras, 36.6 percent of members were women.
In the United States, it was 40 percent, and in Britain, 44 percent.
“I don’t want to throw stones at Vienna, because all of us in classical music are in glass houses, in all questions of diversity,” said Gillian Moore, director of music at the Southbank Center in London, which includes the Royal Festival Hall.
“It’s clearly an odd thing to see an orchestra that is so predominantly male,” she said, referring to the Vienna Philharmonic. “I absolutely accept that they are making progress.”
The problem in classical music boils down to gender roles: what society and tradition allowed women to do, and how those roles endured.
Europe has recognized female musicians for at least three centuries — mainly pianists, harpists and vocalists.
Clara Schumann (1819-96), one of the most famous pianists of her time, composed her first piano concerto at age 16, performing it at the Leipzig premiere.
For the most part, however, women performed in private, not in public, except in all-female ensembles; the world’s first women’s orchestra was formed in Berlin in 1898.
Even in the United States, which was far less hidebound in terms of musical tradition, it was not until 1930 that an orchestra, in this case the Philadelphia Orchestra, hired a woman in a tenured position.
Entire sections of the orchestra remained male because their instruments were considered unladylike.
The cello was deemed indecorous because it had to be placed between a player’s legs.
Flutes and horns were thought to make a woman’s face look funny; percussion instruments were viewed as exclusively male.
But change does appear to be afoot in Austria. In September, Marin Alsop, an American, became the first female chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
By her own admission, she would not have been given the job a decade ago.
The Radio Symphony Orchestra “really own, and are accountable for, the fact that they’ve been extraordinarily conservative, almost to the point of absurdity, in terms of gender equality,” she said in an interview this month.
“They are extraordinarily open to the idea of righting this wrong.”"

No one can claim that I'm fast, but hey! I finally had a moment to sit down and find some fics for a lovely anon who wandered into my inbox looking for classical musician!larry. A few of these are a little bit of a stretch, but hopefully there's something here you enjoy! You'll see little blue hearts along with a lil comment from me on those I have read (admittedly not that many, oops) This is definitely an AU I'd love to see more fic for! It's possible there's more out there, alas it doesn't seem to be commonly tagged. Make sure to tag your fics folks! It makes filtering for things like this so much easier! 💙
🎼 the school of extraordinary lovers // stylinsoncity @stylinsoncity - 191k "We keep telling the other, I love you and I love you, and we do, though we both know where the knives are." - Laura Van Prooyen
harry is a third-year witch and violinist at Laitswold, the only magical academy in the UK, with dreams of taking on the world, and hopefully breaking the centuries-old curse on his family while he's at it. he does not dream of facing off against his childhood rival and duet partner, but louis is back in town after six years abroad, so that's exactly what happens.
🎼 Love Is A Rebellious Bird // 100percentsassy, gloria_andrews - 134k AU in which the boys still make music. Louis is the concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra, Harry is the New! and Exciting! interim conductor/ex-cello prodigy who "has made Mozart cool again" according to Esquire Magazine (Louis hates him immediately, which is definitely why he internet stalked him in his dark bedroom late at night that one time), and Niall is the best. Zayn and Liam are around too.
Don't hum Bolero.
💙 zannithinks: one of those 'classics' that many love! I really enjoyed this fic, and as someone who hears Bolero every year at a local festival I think of this fic often
🎼 Saving Symphony Hall // HelloAmHere @helloamhere - 124k “I think I have an idea,” Louis said. Slowly, and reluctantly, but with a growing sense of the inevitable. “God damnit, I think I have a really good idea.”
“Oh christ, that's the problem-solving face,” Babs said. “Last time we saw that face, he sold a company.”
“Wait, what?” Zayn asked.
“Right place, right time,” Louis said. “Also, fuck my life,”
“What?” Zayn repeated. Niall patted his hand.
“I usually just roll with whatever Louis is about to do,” he said. “It’s better for us all.”
“That’s the attitude,” said Louis, “I’ll tell you tomorrow. Tonight, I need to do some research. Zayn, give me your number. I’m gonna save our symphony.”
💙 zannithinks: I looooove this one! A well developed world and lovable OC's, this is definitely the first fic I think of when I think Larry and Classical Music
🎼 Where Words Fail, Music Speaks // Larry_you_know @larryyouknow - 45k Louis is a world class violinist. He’s one year over forty, living his best life in New York. One day, he comes to a small town in Connecticut where he inherited a house from his late father. The town looks nice and its people welcome him warmly. The problem is that Louis never knew his father and he doesn’t intend to change anything about it - his father can stuff his last will up his treacherous ass. In a strange coincidence, Louis meets town troubadour Harry, who seems wonderful to him just right until he reveals that Louis’ father was like a dad to him.
Even though Louis tries to convince himself that it shouldn’t - it hurts.
🎼 Until You Remember // Throwthemflowers - 21k Talented London pianist Louis Tomlinson moves to a small coastal town to escape the elites of his job and the mundanity of his life. Through the music of Debussy he finds a charming, wonderful friend in Harry Styles, the fiancé of the town's mayor. Louis thinks his pining is in vain until he discovers that all may not be as it seems….
🎼 And I'll Be Here When Only the Silence Remains // louisniall @louisniaii - 19k The one where Louis is a top notch mute violinist and Harry might just be the person he trusts most
🎼 Back to the Sign, and Play Through the End // tomlinsunshine - 17k Louis is a globally renowned pianist; Harry is the worst page turner this world has ever known.
🎼 Take more of my space, why don't you? // otfuckingp - 10k Of course, the universe is not on Louis’ side, nor on the side of his mental health. Just as he starts to think they might get away with this empty seat -- yes, they. He and Instrument Man are in this together, a united front against the forces of any more people-- one more person steps onto the plane. He bypasses the first fifteen rows without so much as a falter, but the fact that he slows around 17 gives Louis pause. There aren’t many empty seats in this section... Surely not. Surely the universe wouldn’t be so cruel as to do this to him.
And then there’s another body landing in the seat next to Instrument Man. Well, “landing” might be too polite. Crashing, is more like it. Within the first ten seconds, he’s elbowed instrument Man in the side, dropped something on the floor, and nearly tripped a stewardess with the exuberant flailing of his legs. All in all, completely shattering the tentative silence in row 21 DEF. Fuck.//
Harry and Louis meet on a plane. Louis is not impressed, until he is.
🎼 What is simple in the moonlight, never really is. // judgementdays @judgementdays - 5k And then they're talking, like they always do on late nights. They talk about the future, about the cute girl who was checking Harry out at Tesco's, about the cute boy who asked for Louis' number the other day. They mostly end up talking about their auditions for the school of their dreams, though.
or
Louis plays piano and Harry plays guitar and they're both trying to get into Juilliard but feelings sort of happen.
🎼 Play Me Something Sweet // nonsensedarling @absolutenonse - 4k “Hey, I’ve got an idea,” Louis says. Harry just looks at him and lifts an eyebrow in silent question. “How about if you pretend I’m your cello as you try it out, like we used to?” Or Harry's good at a lot of instruments, but his favorite one to play is Louis.
💙 zannithinks: this one is spicey!!!!
🎼 And I've got something missing tonight. // whisperedbrave @louistomlindaughter - 2k That night, much like many others, he finishes his dinner and falls asleep to the sound of his neighbor and his piano.
-
or the one where Harry's upstairs neighbor plays the piano every night. one night he stops and Harry can't sleep.

Cunard 2025 Special Event Cruises
With 2025 now in full swing, let's look at the biggest and best Cunard event voyages coming this year, so you can work out which special voyage you’d most like to be on!
youtube
Queen Anne Maiden World Cruise:
Queen Anne is about to set sail on her maiden world cruise, with maiden calls at New York, Miami, the Panama Canal, Auckland, Sydney, Hong Kong, Cape Town and Tenerife, to name just a few.
I am particularly excited for this trip, as I’ll be aboard as a guest speaker during the New Zealand leg of the voyage! Having last been aboard Queen Anne during her maiden voyage, I am keen to experience this new Cunarder again!
Great Australian Culinary Voyage:
The 2010-built Queen Elizabeth is completing its final Australian cruising season, before relocating to the Caribbean later this year. She will host the Great Australian Culinary Voyage to Tasmania between 6 and 11 February.
Special guests Matt Moran – a well-known Australian TV chef and restauranteur will headline a team of Aussie food personalities providing enrichment for guest aboard.
Film Festival:
Cunard’s 2004-built flagship, Queen Mary 2, will be the host ship for their 2025 Film Festival at Sea. Sailing from 8-15 March. The film festival crossing is in partnership with the BFI and will feature film screenings in Illuminations, the ship’s 3D cinema and planetarium.
Cunard 185th Anniversary:
Queen Mary 2 will also host the 185th anniversary transatlantic crossing event – another voyage I am very excited about! I will be aboard as a headline guest speaker, along with Dr. Stephen Payne – the designer of Queen Mary 2!
This voyage sails from 24 June to 1 July, so just a few days ahead of the actual 185th anniversary of Britannia’s maiden departure on 4 July 1840.
However, back in May 1840, Cunard’s first ever ship – the Unicorn – sailed across the Atlantic to commence the first Cunard voyage before Britannia even entered service. Unicorn was a smaller steamer that Cunard purchased to run a ferry service in Canada, and in June 1840 she was causing quite a stir with the local press, creating great interest in the new steamship service.
Dance the Atlantic:
Dance the Atlantic will take place aboard QM2 from 8-15 August 2025 and sees Cunard partner with English National Ballet. There will be ballet classes in the Royal Court Theatre, and performances aboard the ship during the transatlantic crossing.
Symphony:
September 3-10 will see QM2 welcome Anthony Inglis and the United Kingdom’s National Symphony Orchestra aboard for a series of performances in the Royal Court Theatre.
Voyage du Vin:
In October, the Voyage du Vin will set sail aboard Queen Victoria. This cruise, from 13-24 October features talks and tastings from wine experts, and is hosted in partnership with Corney & Barrow, one of the oldest independent wine merchants in the UK.
Special Crossings:
QM2 is home to the final two event voyages of 2025, with the Transatlantic fashion week crossing from 31 October to 7 November, and the Literary Festival at Sea from 8-15 December.
Both the fashion week voyage and Literary festival are eastbound crossings from New York to Southampton.

If you play, seen or heard Twisted Wonderland the White Rabbit Festival have you seen Decue mom if kind hot if was guy marry her or ask her out.
Always it's cute that yuu knows how to play bugle
Hello, my dear!
Sorry it's going to be a long post, I just want to discuss this event.
Yes, I am following the latest updates of the game! This event is charming from which side not to look. There are many references to Alice and the white rabbit. A whole city dedicated to him and the clock! I wonder if there are still cities that carry the "symbol" of a particular character from Disney cartoons. Ace's hometown is the city of "magicians"? Magic artisans? Or the most ordinary city? We need a separate book with more extensive information on the TWST world and characters.
A funny detail, but the event begins with "being late", just like the appearance of the white Rabbit from Alice, who was also in a hurry somewhere and was late.
OH YES!! I was pleasantly surprised that they showed us Mrs. Spade!! Because of the problems with the difference of languages, I can't be sure how to pronounce and write her name correctly. Dilla? Dira? Someone suggested that this is a reference to "Dina" - the cat that Alice had from the cartoon. (It remains to wait to see the rest parents…)
June - a month when they were preparing the documents for marriage with the young (fairy General Gunster) Lilia Vanrouge. July - the month when everyone wants to marry Mrs. Spade. Ahahaha. August - who will be next for the bonds of marriage and a happy family life?
Now we know that Deuce inherited his beauty from his mother. I think her hair is "Highlighted" if I remember correctly, and not gray. Maybe Deuce used the paint when he was a bully that his mother had. Because the color is very suitable. And she has an ear piercing! Quite non-standard for a lady and I really love this detail.
I still laugh so much when someone of the authors tries to "bring together" Lilia and Mrs. Spade. Due to the fact that both cherish their children and they both single parents.
I completely agree that this amazing woman deserves all the best. My favorite part of the event is where she tells all the awkward moments from his son's life.
DEUCE WAS TELLING ABOUT YUU GRIMM AND ACE TO HIS MOM!!
*SOLEMNLY* AND I TOLD YOU THAT THESE TWO TELL EVERYTHING TO THEIR FAMILIES!! It warms my heart so much.
No one can convince me that Deuce spent a lot of time at his Mother's work when he was little, and most likely sat on his mother's lap while Miss Spade had a break and "imagined" that he was a truck driver. Even if the engine is turned off, Dilla removed the keys and Deuce did not reach the pedals with his baby feet. To the little "rabbit" Deuce was definitely having fun.
I love it so much when Toboso-sensei introduces female characters to the plot. And they blow up the fandom brighter than any overblott. Give me a game/manga/comic by Tobosa-sensei with a purely female collection and I can retire.
Oh yes!It was a bit unexpected! Because the official information about the gaming Yu is very small. Literally collecting bread crumbs among wheat..
I think this is some kind of reference. Even a few!
Mickey Mouse could play a lot of instruments.
The piano appears quite a lot where (Azul would be surprised), there is also a trumpet and a horn, a violin (Hello Malleus)! And a lot of other tools. For example, in the 1931 cartoon THE DELIVERY BOY, Mickey plays the trumpet and Piano. (funny reference because Mrs. Spade works in delivery)
And he could also conduct an entire orchestra!
"Music" unites everyone regardless of any differences among people. Just like Yuu, they have the ability to "unite" and force NRC students to cooperate. It is a very good comparison that each instrument must follow a single musical note and the instructions of the conductor in order to create a symphony or music.
It could also be a reference that Yuu could have learned music from the Ghosts from the dorm. The same 1937 cartoon Lonely Ghosts.
The ghosts played wind instruments and a drum.
If you look, you can find so many references that the head will go rough.
It will be extremely funny to find out that Yuu is easily given to learn any musical instruments, and Azul could not get this ability.
I will add from myself, this is purely my invention. The game Yu has the following skills.
-Photography, very good pictures. Even won the second place in the competition! (Personal history of Rook card from the Portland event) -Repair and creation of things - guest room. You need to have a good enough imagination to create things. -Cooking - Chapter 7 Yuu mentioned that they often cooked in their dorm.
-Music. - the current event and the event with Epel. -Painting. - I'm haunted by the easel in their bedroom. Most likely they draw well.

On Paul Robeson's 126th birthday, I would like to celebrate one of his lesser known songs. His rendition of Beethoven's Ode to Joy with his own interpretive translation of the lyrics. It captures the humanistic spirit of the Enlightenment, French Revolutionary and Romanticist eras in which Beethoven worked. And the egalitarian ideas Robeson championed. Those who struggle are supported and those who might dominate are kept in check. It is the deepest level of solidarity and fraternity where none are allowed to fall. A powerful antidote to an age of unchecked individualism, competition, cruelty and glorification of strength for its own sake.
..Build the road of peace before us, Build it wide and deep and long Speed the slow and check the eager, Help the weak and curb the strong. None shall push aside another, None shall let another fall March beside me, oh, my brothers,
ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL
Paul Robeson Sings For The Underdog
During his career, vocalist Paul Robeson usually avoided singing classical music, once stating that European traditions had “nothing in common with the history of my slave ancestors.” He almost exclusively devoted himself to spirituals, protest songs and folk ballads, championing the oppressed through music. That was certainly the case with his unlikely but devoted relationship with group of working-class miners in Wales, whom Robeson supported in their protests against low wages and unsafe working conditions.
On the occasion he did perform classical works, he reframed them as folk music. Robeson’s “Ode to Joy” replaces the orchestra with a single piano, and he opts to sing in English rather than German, driving home the message of brotherhood to his English-speaking audiences. Robeson’s leftist politics lead to his blacklisting during the McCarthy Era, leaving him unable to travel with a revoked passport. So when the Welsh miners invited him to perform at a festival 1957, his only choice was to sing across the sea via a transatlantic telephone line. He dedicated his version of “Ode to Joy” to the crowd of 5,000, supporting their struggle for what he called “a world where we can live abundant and dignified lives.”
youtube
Chilean Women Protest A Violent Dictator
In 1973, military dictator Augusto Pinochet assumed power in Chile and oversaw the imprisonment and torture of tens of thousands of people belonging to opposition groups. At the risk of their own lives, female protesters gathered outside torture prisons to sing the “Himno a la Alegria,” a hymn based on “Ode to Joy,” to bring hope to those being held inside. You can see a clip of the protest in the documentary Following the Ninth:
youtube
Another of his lesser known performance is of Luther's famous hymn, which launched in the religious sphere the bourgeois democratic revolt against Medieval Feudalism.
youtube
While we are still a long, long ways away from the just society Robeson dreamed of, we have at least made some progress from the McCarthyist days in which he was blacklisted, to being officially recognized today in our nation's capital.

would love to participate. My initials are A.b,♉,🌻💀👾🥀✨.
Things I am learning to love about me:-
1) being confident= by not caring what other would think of me
2) being enough for myself= telling myself I don't need anyone's company to comfort me
3) stage fear?= Embracing my talents and not hiding them from world
My goal is success and comeback on those who looked down at me
Hi AB,
Thank you so much for participating in my new ask game.
I'm really happy that you are working hard on learning to love yourself, especially in working hard to be more confident, feeling that you're enough and your stage fright.
Just remember to pace yourself and don't force yourself to change just to see results. You don't have to hate the process in order to be better. Particularly, I feel it's best for you to choose the path of least resistance when it comes to wanting to love yourself. Either that or find a way or strategize that will help achieve your goals in a way that you'll love the process/journey.
I actually know those two songs! I've been obsessed with Faouzia for weeks now! Also, nothing beats the classic symphony!
I hope and pray that you achieve the success you wish; remember, you're doing this for yourself, not for others.
These are the cards I pulled out for you: 10 of Swords, King of Wands, 7 of Cups
7 of Cups: choices, searching for purpose, illusion, fantasy, daydreaming, wishful thinking, indecision
The first card feels more like a warning, to not burn yourself out just to achieve your goals. It's like, it's okay to be passionate with wanting to achieve your dreams. What's not right is to do so at the expense of your overall well being, particularly your sanity.
There's also this soft message of avoiding self-betrayal due to choosing external validation at the price of your inner peace. It seems that the cards picked up that you might have a tendency to let people abuse your kindness, who mistake this noble quality of yours as mere dispensable resource that predators have easy access to. Better protect your energy, especially your well being for people who benefitted from your lack of boundaries.
The next card suggests that you take charge of your destiny. This feels more of you taking accountability and responsibility over your life. Don't let people dictate how you live your life. Don't let yourself be influenced by others to do their bidding. Don't ever do things that would be your demise.
This card is asking you to take control of your own life. Don't live out another person's dream. Live your life the way you want to. Not how others want you to live.
The last card is asking you to make a decision and lay out your game plan, think of your 10 yr life plan and strategize actionable steps to it. Don't be indecisive or be stuck in the delusion of a shiny dream. Don't fall for the shiny syndrome because not all that glitters is gold. Crumpled tin foils shine light too, but that don't mean they're worth reselling. Don't just dream big, act on that and make a list of actionable steps to make into your reality.
This is as far as I could interpret for your reading. Thank you so much for being my participant!
Feel free to tip me in my Buy me a Coffee account (to show support) ahehe [Not required, but most grateful if you did]~ (This reading is for entertainment purposes only)

The connections of Music and Nature
Hey guys welcome back to another weekly blog post, this week I am very excited and I have been waiting to talk about this and it's about music and nature. Two things that I have a strong passion and love for.
Both music and nature are such strong forces that can evoke emotions, they stir the soul and translucent the boundaries of human perception. This blog post I want to delve into the connection that music has with nature and how that nature can resonate within the notes of music.
Nature itself can be seen as music with its symphony of different sounds with different origins. From the rustling of leaves as the wind brushes through them, or the sound of raindrops that hit ground, and even the beautiful world of animal singing. With the sounds of the birds chirping and squirrels calling. All aspects of nature come together to produce sweet harmony and build the most tranquil orchestra. It's through these beautiful sounds that musicians often find inspiration, and seek to produce music that shares the same emotion.
Looking at the definition of music and the question “Do other species show musical language and expression?” (Gray, P. Krause, B. Atema, J., Payne, R., Krumhansl, C. & Baptista, L. (2001). The Music of Nature and the Nature of Music. Science. 291. 52-54), it really makes you realise that music can be found anywhere you go. Other animals use music for various other things, like communication, which humans also do. This just shows that music can be used and interpreted in so many ways, and the beauty of it all is that you don’t have to be the one to compose in order to convey your feelings and share with others.
One artist that has resonated with me and no matter the song it always takes me to a beautiful natural landscape, and feels calm and at peace, is the late Seba “Nujabes” Jun. Nujabes created a musical legacy for himself with his ability to incorporate numerous different genres of music into hip-hop, namely jazz, creating beautiful melodies accompanied by masterful beats, all in order to mirror the calm and immersive qualities found in nature. Nujabes was able to blur the boundaries between the urban life and serene outdoors, transporting the listeners into a different world. A prime example of his ability to do this is in the album “Modal Soul” namely the 10th song on the album titled “Modal Soul” with the mixture of funky drums, and the light piano in the back, it makes you feel like you’re in a forest surrounded by fireflies dancing at a festival. Not only does he sample actual sounds of nature like the sounds of the crickets in the background of the song titled “Light on the land”, in the songs he has vocals in, the artists use nature as a way to reference things such as death. For example in the song title “Luv(sic) Part 5) the artist Shing02 talks about how fast death can come stating “Till death do us apart, and it did. Come sudden like clouds, and it hid my sun”. Sadly this Nujabes passed away at the young age of 36, and the previous lyric is referring to his death. However, to this day his music lives on and will continue to touch the hearts of the listeners and help them connect with nature.
Thank you for reading this week's blog post. I was very excited to talk about music and even more excited to talk about my favourite artist Nujabes. If you know Nujabes and listen to his music what's your favourite song for me its “Peaceland” which is linked at the bottom. But if you haven’t heard of Nujabes, give his music a listen and let me know if there is an artist you think is similar.

KOKIA in flashback - 2017
In the year of 2017, KOKIA begins a new project: Ton ton ton, a project that initially starts with 1 CD (Doubutsu no ongakukai, 'animal concert'), but with a twist: the CD comes in a tin with 6 different designs, all done by KOKIA herself. All songs are about animals, and for every song, KOKIA makes a separate leaflet with the lyrics and the animal design. The project is aimed explicitly at kids as well as adults, with merchandise and more CDs planned for later.
KOKIA returns to China not once, but twice this year, in January and in December, opening en ending the year with her visits. The year also ends with a Christmas concert as per usual, but this time, it's an orchestra concert.
She also starts counting down to her 20th anniversary next year, launching a special website like she did for her 15th anniversary. This is also when she starts her own Facebook page. The countdown has begun!

Chucho Valdés Trio Live in NYC (Full Concert) | Jazz Icons at Trinity Church, Wall Street
Chucho Valdés Trio Live in NYC (Full Concert) | Jazz Icons at Trinity Church, Wall Street.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqfmo0ZlyCw Chucho Valdés Trio. Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger Chucho Valdés is the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz. He is perhaps best known for helming the iconic Cuban ensemble Irakere (1973–2005). In a career spanning more than 60 years, Valdés has distilled elements of the Afro-Cuban music tradition, jazz, classical music, rock, and more into a deeply personal style. He is joined by bassist Jose Armando Gola and percussionist Roberto Vizcaíno Jr. for what is sure to be a transcendent performance. The concert is presented in collaboration with JAZZ HOUSE KiDS.
Winner of seven GRAMMY® and five Latin GRAMMY® Awards, Mr. Valdés, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Science last year and was also inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame. Mr. Valdés celebrated his 80th birthday on October 9, 2021, completing La Creación (The Creation), a three-movement suite for a small ensemble, voices, and a big band. The piece, the most ambitious work of his career, tells the history of Creation according to the Regla de Ocha, the Afro-Cuban religion known as Santería.
The Creation was a commission of the Adrianne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, the Chicago Symphony Center, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. It had its world premiere on November 5, 2021, at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
Performances followed in several U.S. cities, including Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Detroit Jazz Festival in Detroit, MI, and the Monterey Jazz Festival, in Monterey, CA. In Europe, the tour began at the Philharmonie in Paris and included performances in Berlin, London, Hamburg, Lyon, and Barcelona (Mr. Valdés is the godfather of the International Jazz Festival). Another significant recent development was the long-awaited reunion with his old friend and co-conspirator in many musical adventures, the extraordinary clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Paquito D’Rivera. They have rarely played together for the past 40 years, and since their reunion, they have wasted no time. In January 2022, they recorded an album entitled I Missed You Too, and embarked on a tour with their Reunion Sextet that took them to Europe and the United States. Born in a family of musicians in Quivicán, Havana province, Cuba, on October 9, 1941, Dionisio Jesús “Chucho” Valdés Rodríguez, has distilled elements of the Afro-Cuban music tradition, jazz, classical music, and rock into an organic, deeply personal style. His first teacher was his father, the pianist, composer, and bandleader Ramón “Bebo” Valdés. By the age of three, Mr. Valdés was already playing on the piano melodies he heard on the radio — using both hands and on any key. He began taking lessons on piano, theory, and solfege at the age of five. He continued his formal musical education at the Conservatorio Municipal de Música de la Habana, from which he graduated at 14. A year later, Mr. Valdés formed his first jazz trio. In 1959, he debuted professionally with the band Sabor de Cuba. The ensemble, directed by his father, is widely considered one of the great orchestras in modern Cuban music. Fittingly, Mr. Valdés made his early mark as the founder, pianist, and leading composer and arranger of another landmark ensemble: the small big band Irakere (1973-2005). With its audacious mix of Afro-Cuban ritual music, Cuban dance music, jazz, classical music, and rock, Irakere marked a before and after in Latin jazz. Irakere’s self-titled debut recording in the United States won a Grammy as Best Latin Recording in 1979. While he remained with Irakere until 2005, Mr. Valdés launched a parallel career in 1998 both as a solo performer and a small-group leader. It marked the beginning of an enormously fruitful period highlighted by albums such as Solo Piano (Blue Note, 1991), Solo: Live in New York (Blue Note, 2001), as well as quartet recordings such as Bele Bele en La Habana (Blue Note, 1998), Briyumba Palo Congo (Blue Note, 1999), New Conceptions (Blue Note, 2003), and Live at the Village Vanguard (Blue Note, 2000), which won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. After leaving Irakere, Mr. Valdés also won Grammys for Juntos Para Siempre (Calle 54, 2007), the duet recording with his father, Bebo; and, Chucho’s Steps (Comanche, 2010), which introduced his new group, the Afro-Cuban Messengers. But such success didn’t mean forgetting past achievements. In 2015, Mr. Valdés celebrated the 40th anniversary of the birth of Irakere, his iconic band, with a world tour. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac (Jazz Village / Comanche Music), which captured a performance on that tour, won a Grammy for the Best Latin Jazz Album in 2016. He also won a Latin Grammy as Best Latin Jazz album for Jazz Batá 2, in which he revisited a revolutionary idea Mr. Valdés first recorded in 1972: a piano jazz trio featuring batá drums. In 2022, Chucho Valdés won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy for Mirror Mirror, an album of duets by pianist and singer Eliane Elias with Mr. Valdés and the great late pianist Chick Corea.
