-SKULL ISLAND MEAT EATER-
The Apex Predator of the island, this highly derived Varanid has evolved a similar bodyplan to the theropods it lives with, walking bipedally as its tail drags trough the ground, a smaller species called C. gwangii lives in the arid areas of the island.

Vaqueros Wrangling an Allosaurus
In a secluded Mexican valley sometime during the early 20th century, these vaqueros (Mexican cowboys) are trying to wrangle a late-surviving Allosaurus!
This scene was of course inspired by Ray Harryhausen’s The Valley of Gwangi, which is pretty much the quintessential cowboys-versus-dinosaurs movie. I always did like Harryhausen’s stop-motion work, which to my childhood self looked like toy dinosaurs coming to life.

Cowboy vs Allosaurus, by Ray Harryhausen, signed 1945. Oil on canvas board, 30.5 x 50.5 cm.
A classic oil painting by Ray, this shows you just how long some of his ideas had been formed before being committed to film! Of course, the concept of 'The Valley of Gwangi' (1969) had originally been conceived by Willis O'Brien, but it's interesting to see just how early the idea had grabbed Ray's imagination.

Here's a fun fact for those who didn't know, this famous scene of the T-Rex attacking a Gallimimus in Jurassic Park,
Tumblr media
It was inspired by a similar scene from the 1969 movie The Valley of Gwangi were the Allosaurus surprise attacks an Ornithomimus.

So I had always assumed that this foreign poster art for The Valley of Gwangi was an alteration of the poster art that WB always uses for its disc releases.
This rather hideous artwork below:

Which always baffled me since this amazing poster art exists:

Anyway, I digress. Today I suddenly realized that I was completely wrong. The Ankylosaur-hybrid must have come first because I just now realized that the DVD artwork still has the tail club in it!
Tumblr media
Talk about a downgrade! The foreign poster may be inaccurate, but it looks way cooler.

Double bill for the day: One Million Years B.C. (1966) and The Valley of Gwangi (1969), for those wanting a little bit more Harryhausen in their dinosaur movies. Perfect recommendation for a Jurassic June movie night!

Filming the capture of Gwangi, the tube on the vehicle symbolizes the neck of the dynosaur. The lasso scene required 2 and a half months of work for the animation. Rambla Lanujar (from memory) Tabernas Desert #Almeria #RayHarryhausen #Cinema
