Books in the Wild: The Works
As I mentioned on Monday, I made a trip into town ash Sunday and did two bookshops. And as The Works seemed to have a lot of books I have read and recommended it seemed like I should do a post for those of you who fancy a 3 for £6 deal (or two) Firstly: please note my first sighting of The Unsinkable Greta James in the wild – I didn’t see the hardback in stores (I ordered it) but here is the…

November wrap up Some great reads in November. I read three #botm books, but I got four in my December box so I’m still behind. Two surprising audiobooks - Greta James and Bernadette. Where’d You Go Bernadette is in the running for best audiobook performance of the year. Go listen if you haven’t already. Read some books from masters of crime fiction - Sandford and Connelly. The new Letty Davenport series from Sandford is fantastic. What was your favorite book in November? Book Review: The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith
Tumblr media
The Unsinkable Greta James is a tender and quiet yet altogether kinetic story that takes place on an Alaskan cruise. It's about Greta James, an indie rockstar and guitarist, who is trying to pick up the pieces of her life after her mother's sudden death from an aneurysm months earlier. Still reeling from the loss, as well as from the public breakdown she had on stage that has stalled her career, she agrees to go on a seven-day cruise with her father, with whom she has a tense and contentious relationship. While on the trip, she also meets a writer named Ben Wilder, who has a love of Jack London. Recently separated from his wife, he, like Greta, is trying to discover what he wants from his life moving forward. Their connection, I'd argue, is borne of mutual adriftness, mutual searching. However, that doesn't make what transpires between them any less profound or moving. With them, I think readers truly get the sense that certain people are meant to pop into your life when you need them. They're there to shake things up, force you to reevaluate. They're like a propellant that jump-starts you forward. Though this book does have some lighter romantic moments, it's mostly about mourning, forgiveness, healing, and self-exploration. I believe Greta and her father, who are both grieving, who are both lost when it comes to knowing how to proceed, are the heart of the story. The tension between them feels authentic. Believable. The old sore wound that remains open between them has a deep history. It's been years and years in the making. It's not easy to mend; in fact, there were moments where I wondered if they'd be able to bandaid things over enough to reach neutral ground at all. The author depicts the complexity, the messiness, of their father-daughter relationship well. The conflict between them is palpable. However--so is the love. All in all, this story was earnest and heartfelt. Definitely the kind that might squeeze a stray tear from you before you're done reading.
Many thanks to Random House and Ballantine Books for the ARC. 3.5/5 stars **Follow me on Goodreads

The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith is an emotional story with a gorgeous setting. As a big fan of the author’s YA books, I was excited for this adult debut, and the cruise ship setting and family dynamics did not disappoint. While I had some issues with the pacing at certain points, this one is still an enjoyable read with themes of healing and reigniting one’s passion.

Publication date: March 1, 2022 I was given an Advanced Reader’s Copy of The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith (Amazon) by NetGalley and Ballantine Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. “Greta James’s meteoric rise to indie stardom was hard-won. Before she graced magazine covers and sold out venues, she spent her girlhood strumming her guitar in the…

Moon, mercury & cassiopeia!
aah thank you <3
Moon- Are you currently reading any books? If so, what book(s)?
you know me, i am always reading books (plural). right now the ones i'm more or less consistent with are a court of wings and ruin (which is great but i cannot for the life of me remember these titles and it's the bane of my existence), the unsinkable greta james (which comes highly recommended from my uni colleague, into the spotlight (which is also for uni) and the wind in the willows (because i haven't actually read it lmao).
Mercury- Describe your aesthetic.
city witch goblin
Cassiopeia- What’s your favourite quote?
why do you keep asking me for quotes this is hard.
She'd laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and gotten drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him.

Book Review: The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith

Do you ever have a book surprise you? I didn’t have any high expectations for The Unsinkable Greta James but this book is going to be in my Top Ten this year. “It’s been a few months since Greta lost it on stage during one of her concerts. She was performing a new song she had written for her mom. But it was too soon after her mom’s sudden death and Greta couldn’t do it. Now she’s in performance limbo. Her brother calls and tells her she needs to go on the Alaskan cruise with their father - the father who’s dismissive of her career choice - who’s never believed in her. The cruise their mother planned before she died to celebrate a big anniversary. Greta doesn’t want to but goes anyway…and finds some things.” This book is about grief and family and love and reconciliation. It’s one of those books that leaves you with a warm feeling at the end. Greta is one of my new favorite characters. (I think they could have included some of her music 🎶 🎸 on the audiobook.) Fathers and daughters will get the dynamic between Conrad and Greta. Conrad’s deep need for security after growing up poor and Greta’s want to chase her dream - it’s always a conflict and takes a lot of communicating to get through. Smith makes you think you know where the story is going but she doesn’t wrap it up with a neat bow. It’s messy - just like life. Read this book this year or listen to the wonderful audiobook performance from Mae Whitman. #theunsinkablegretajames #jennifersmith #bookofthemonth #indiemusician #indiemusic #contemporaryfiction #musicfiction #daddiesanddaughters #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #homelibrary #alaskacruise #characterdrivenbooks #bookrecs #audiobooks (at Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck0nz3oL-_2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
