Norma Shearer, Ramon Novarro, and Jean Hersholt in The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg (Ernst Lubitsch, 1927) Cast: Ramon Novarro, Norma Shearer, Jean Hersholt, Gustav von Seyffertitz Lutz: Edgar Norton, Bobbie Mack, Philippe De Lacy, Otis Harlan. Screenplay: Hanns Kräly, based on a book and play by Wilhelm Meyer-Förster. Cinematography: John J. Mescall. Art direction: Richard Day, Cedric Gibbons. Film editing: Andrew Marton.  Though The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg sometimes seems as overextended as its title, given the slightness of its love-or-duty plot, it gets a good deal of zip from Ernst Lubitsch's direction and from the charm of its leads, Ramon Novarro and Norma Shearer. The latter, especially, is seen to good advantage in a role that doesn't call on her to over-emote, a trap she sometimes fell into in many of her sound roles. Lubitsch inserts sly gags here and there to leaven the obviousness of the plot. After perhaps one too many scenes of students quaffing beer, there's a card to remind us that they were at the university to learn, too, followed by a shot of a professor droning away at a lectern to a classroom of a single student. Eventually, the film bogs down a bit when Novarro's Karl Heinrich is called away to princely duties and has to forsake Shearer's lovely barmaid.

When I was small, my Oma sat me down to watch The Student Prince, a film about an English Prince who poses as a student at The University of Heidelberg. When it was over, I asked to watch it again. I watched it all the time. We tore through multiple copies of it. Oma told me stories of seeing it multiple times in the cinema just before leaving for Canada (with a suitcase and $9) in 1954. Like any child, I assumed Heidelberg was a made up place for the movie and wished I could go. It never occurred to me to ask my Oma, who obviously knew it was real. When she passed, I started googling everything she ever told me about, upset with myself that I never asked enough questions. I cried for hours when I found out Heidelberg was an actual place, with a real university where students drank in beer gardens and actually did the funny probst thing sometimes. I really love that funny probst thing. Like taking shots, but make it sexy men from the 50s in uniform with steins. It’s a very quiet old world town full of nutcrackers and steins and cuckoo clocks. Restaurants panelled in dark wood with amber glass stained windows where they serve ghoulash and schpatzel and schnitzel. Some restaurants have been there since the 1800s It was the only place in Germany where I heard German music. I got to go to a real castle. But my absolute favourite was getting off the bus and humming Summertime in Heidelberg to myself and thrn the church bells went off. The same church bells I’d heard so many times in that movie. The streets are still completely cobblestone. There are pictures I took that are shot for shot exteriors from the film that have not changed. I would have stayed forever. Happy Silent Movie Day! One of my favorites: THE STUDENT PRINCE IN OLD HEIDELBERG (1927). "Silent pictures were the purest form of cinema." Alfred Hitchcock #SilentMovieDay #silentmovies #thelubitschtouch #hitchcock https://www.instagram.com/p/CjF5vo9A12F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We touch to connect. And yet, in these bleakest of times, we’re blocked from the primal reassurance of being touched. These moments I’ve pulled from (mainly) classic films I find far more intimate than what is normally projected as “intimacy” in film today, typically reduced to just sex as an expression of love, lust, or connection. But the simple gesture of touching someone’s hand is incredibly revealing and deeply intimate, perhaps more so than sex itself.
Films (in order): How Green Was My Valley (1941) Spione (1928) The 39 Steps (1935) Elvis and Priscilla at their wedding (British Pathé footage, 1967) The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg (1927) Anna Karenina (2012) Call Me By Your Name (2017) In The Mood For Love (2000) L’Amant (1992) L’Eclisse (1962)
