Class and Purpose
I’ve heard a lot of people theorize about the purpose of each Class in any particular session. As you can probably imagine, I have a few thoughts about that. Let’s get into it, shall we? (Edit: this took me nearly two hours to write. It’s almost 7am. I need to sleep.)
First, we ought to start with the Witch and Heir. Now, all the Witches we’ve seen in canon seem to have a very similar beginning. They start off fairly passive (lowercase “p” this time) and have quite a lengthy maturation arc, not unlike Pages. However, once they hit a certain breaking point when they come into their powers, there’s a sort of “oh, shit” moment when everyone else is forced to reckon with one of their most unassuming players swiftly transforming into a powerhouse. With this much power at their disposal in such a short period of time, you may be wondering what they’re going to do with it. Well, historically speaking, they’re going to massively fuck things up for the session, whether intentionally or not. If the game determines that a brick shithouse of a player is required for some ultimate endgame, that means things are going to go very, very wrong. Ironically, the Witch may very well be the one to save the team from total catastrophe. It will usually work out in the end. Usually.
Now, the Heir is a bit of a different story. As one whose Aspect coddles and protects them in desperate times, the Heir is destined to become their Aspect in one way or another, for better or worse. After all, when a sullen, hungry Aspect like Void was influencing Equius, he ended up vanishing into irrelevance. Even his blood was used to obscure information in Rose’s tome. A similar fate befell Mituna, and he became the embodiment of sacrifice—of Doom. Heirs are doorways for their Aspects to affect the universe. They are the closest any living being can get to a distilled, pure form of an Aspect. If your session has an Heir, pay very close attention to the implications of their Aspect, because this will almost always determine how they’ll be used most effectively. An Heir of Blood, for example, is going to be your hard-working people-person, and you’ll want them in the center of your team, keeping everyone grounded and focused on the task at hand. Take heed: the appearance of an Heir is a sign that one Aspect in particular is going to have a strong influence on the session.
Next, we’ll discuss the Mage and Seer. A Mage’s role in a session is to unravel the mysteries of their Aspect, which means they’ll take on an advisory role. Their appearance marks a significant need for in-depth understanding of some kind. Every session has its riddles and puzzles, but those which possess a Mage need the mind of a scientist in order to parse out the most convoluted secrets. Perhaps the session is filled with difficult or confusing Aspect-related mysteries that must be taken apart and examined for an endgame victory to be possible. Unfortunately, we just don’t know enough about Mages in canon to speculate a whole lot more about what their presence in a session might mean.
The Seer has a similar purpose as the Heir, though to a lesser extent. While the Heir embodies their Aspect, a Seer is guided by theirs in subtle ways. The appearance of a Seer as an adviser ensures that the ultimate path to success will be either helped or hindered by their Aspect, and it’s up to them to figure out the extent and purpose of their Aspect’s sway in their session. This Passive Class tends to be assigned to otherwise active players who wish to exert their will over the universe, but must learn to step back and take on the role of a guide. Many will balk at this, but most will eventually realize that their true strength comes from trusting others to take their advice and push the team forward.
Now, onto the Maid and Sylph. The Maid, as I’ve discussed previously, begins their journey at the mercy of their Aspect’s most negative qualities. As you can imagine, a Maid’s purpose is to gain control of their Aspect in a way that allows them to “tidy it up” and maintain its integrity. The appearance of a Maid in a session almost guarantees that their Aspect is going to be fraying and torn, in need of their mending expertise. You can certainly expect a lot of difficulties to arise in the realm of their Aspect at the beginning, since they’ll lack the ability to smooth out those bumps for quite some time. Once the Maid realizes their potential, however, stand back and allow them to do their work. Chances are, they know what needs to be done to succeed, and you don’t want to stand in the way of a Maid and a stitch to be fixed.
Ah, the Sylph. As one myself, it’s fairly easy to imagine what my purpose in a session would be. Similar to the Maid, a Sylph’s job is one of restoration and healing, though they tend to start out with much more confidence toward their Aspect than the Maid. The presence of a Sylph in a session is a handy sign that their Aspect is likely going to be lost or broken at any given point, and therefore in need of restoration. This could be metaphorical, or quite literal, depending on the situation. As a Sylph of Time myself, it’s easy to imagine bringing back an amnesiac’s memories by “restoring” the time they lost, or healing a wound by speeding up time around it. Beware, however, as a Sylph’s energy isn’t limitless, and even the most dedicated healers need time to recuperate, or else they risk overexerting themselves and burning out. (Trust me, “Sylph Burnout” is a very real thing.)
Well, the first half is over, so now it’s time to talk about the Prince and Bard. As destroyer Classes, one might wonder what these might mean for their Aspects. That’s quite simple: both indicate an overabundance of their Aspect that must be pruned away. The Prince, in particular, is infamous for destroying their Aspect within themselves before turning their crusade outward. Too much of one Aspect upsets the balance, after all, so it must be purged to allow its opposite to rush in to fill that gap. If your session has a Prince, buckle up tight, because any semblance of their Aspect that exists is going to be an irresistible target for their princely purge. Although this is probably a good thing overall for the session, it’s going to be rather painful at the onset. Princes may “get the tumors out,” so to speak, but they’re likely to leave the patient bleeding on the operating table afterwards.
Having a Bard in your party is a little bit like inviting a chimpanzee to a D&D session: it’s exciting and unpredictable at first, but after a while, shit really starts to hit the fan and you’re left wondering “who invited this guy in the first place?” Truthfully, though, the Bard can be both a game-changing player and the one who dooms the entire session. In rare cases, they’re both simultaneously. Their Passive nature makes it difficult to predict what they’ll do next, since they act based on the whims of both their Aspect and its opposite, but it’s fairly certain your session will be rife with discord and conflict, due in part to the Bard. It’s sort of the universe’s way of throwing a curveball in the form of a player to challenge the team even further. A Bard is both a buff and a nerf to your team. Use them wisely, and never, ever turn your back on the Bard.
Well, well, it’s about time we talked about the Knight and Page. A Knight’s appearance has a very obvious consequence: whatever their Aspect is, that’s what your session will be lacking. Dave’s session was very, very short on time, Karkat’s had virtually no natural cohesion, and Latula’s was filled with big personalities with no regard for the consequences of their actions. This is because the Knight’s job is to use whatever they can get of their Aspect and exploit the hell out of it. Give them an inch, and they’ll turn it into a mile without breaking a sweat. This is especially handy when there’s precious little of their Aspect to go around.
Now, having a Page in your session may sound like a recipe for dead weight, but that would be an incredibly unfair assumption. Rather, a Page has access to a great deal of exploitative power as they reach the climax of their development. The presence of a Page is a very good sign indeed, as long as the team is willing to put up with their very slow and steep maturation arc. Their Aspect is one that will be opened up to be used by their teammates in game-breaking ways, provided they’re patient and encouraging toward the Page. Good things come to those who wait, and wasting the potential of a fully realized Page is not a mistake you want to make.
Last but certainly not least, we have the Thief and Rogue. Thieves get a bit of a bad rap in canon, but it’s safe to say that the Thief will become a powerful player in any given session. Their appearance signifies great conflict and strife, which they’ll almost certainly cause in the first place. Thieves begin much like Pages in the sense that they lack their Aspect and seek to obtain it. For the Thief, this Aspect-shaped hole is too much to bear, and their schemes to take it at any cost will likely be the source of the session’s woe. This isn’t necessarily all bad, however, as knowing your Thief well enough can help you predict the nature of this unavoidable conflict, allowing you to prepare well in advance. Remember, the Thief can make an incredible ally, but their interests won’t always fully align with those of the party.
Finally, we have the Rogue. Ultimately, the Rogue is in charge of balancing their Aspect by redistributing it from areas of abundance to those of scarcity. Too much of one Aspect upsets the universal balance, and as we’ve covered previously, there are quite a few Classes whose purpose involves tipping the scales back where they’re supposed to be. The Rogue is the most intricately tied to this delicate dance between their Aspect and its opposite, since the presence of one necessarily negates the other. Their job is to facilitate this natural order, ensuring that their Aspect doesn’t become too concentrated in one form or another, ultimately supporting a natural sense of order over chaos.
If you’ve read all the way to the end, congratulations! You’ve officially read through nearly two hours of my creative process. I’m actually really impressed.

Classpecting, ver3
“You and all your friends have dispositions affected by your classes and aspects.” -Prologue Page 3
Functions of Classpecting: Homestuck is a story about ‘a story’- authors vs characters. The bottom layer of Homestuck’s DnD board is the “literal” story: characters playing out the parts written for them. The more the characters ‘ascend,’ the closer they get to understanding the limits of their own “metaphorical” existence as story characters.
So: classpecting functions on both a ‘literal,’ and ‘metaphorical’ level of abstraction. A full title is a stamp of intent and promise of the ‘author’ to the character of how the character’s expected role in the story, chivvying them towards 'their true calling,’ especially to reach god tier, like a restriction on their function, based on their character so far. The powers the title grant manifest as pun-like superpowers.
.
Class: “the same thing, but different.”
There are 14 classes in Homestuck, divided into active/passive pairs. Lord/Muse is a master class, the rest are ‘standard.’ Key: active/passive - “commonality” (bolded = canon)
Mage/Seer* - “knowing class”
Heir/Page* - "gifted class” (inheriting?)
Thief*/Rogue* - “stealing class”
Witch*/Sylph* - “manipulating class” (healing?)
Knight*/Maid - “devoted class” (serving? Guardian? Protect?)
Prince*/Bard* - “destroyer class”
Lord*/Muse* - “bringing the ultimate result”
.
Aspect: “opposite ends of the same thing.”
There are 12 aspects in Homestuck, said to be divided into complementary pairs. They make up reality. Key: pair - scale (confirmed)
Time/Space - endings and beginnings
Void/Light - relevance, absence of knowledge and knowledge
Blood/Breath - spirit, bonds and freedom
Rage/Hope - empowerment, disbelief and optimism
Heart/Mind - decisions, emotion and thought
Doom/Life - mortality, death and life
.
.
Classes: “How an aspect manifests/is channeled”
“Passive” and “Active” can act as narrative labels on role than a commentary on a character’s personality, which is always open to exception. A character if they chose could rebel against their class, or role in the story, but succeeding might be a matter of other circumstances entirely. Maybe a Light player with an active class would be able to do something like that, or if many players, with their varying skillsets and classpect titles, worked together. There’s a running theme classes almost strongarm characters into acting certain ways.
*Not much info on Mage.
Active (-): “exploit their aspect to benefit themselves/affect one person,” move the story
Passive (+): “exploit their aspect to benefit others/affect many people,” background in story
(Active/Passive also manifests like this: a passive class wielding Breath, and an active class wielding Blood could produce similar story beat/superpower results.)
.
“Manipulation” (creation?)
Active: Witch- manipulates, with aclarity
Passive: Sylph- subtly affected by, moves, heals, lacks clarity, help people use Aspect
.
“Knowing, has insight”
Active: Mage- knows, doesn’t understand, acts using the information
Passive: Seer- knows, understands, shares knowledge, can literally see with superhuman senses. [p3833] A Seer would support her allies in battle not with her weapons, but her vision. She would sift through dross of her comrades' poor tactical inclinations and examine the grim consequences. A Seer would not charge into the fray headlong but direct it as a conductor with a baton. She would have the sight to eschew the obvious gambits, and find the path to victory disguised cleverly as setback, or even imminent defeat. She would behold the fortunes of friends and foes in totality, and appraise the contrivance of luck itself. She would know its mines were not to be plundered, but simply explored and charted carefully.
.
“Gifted, follows” (passivity?)
Active: Heir- gifted something related to aspect, and skilled in it, moves quickly, creates Aspect, an agent of, inherits
Passive: Page- gifted something after a long while, has large potential, may manifest a great strength eventually (low probability) after a laboriously slow and steady rate of not using aspect to be able to fully use Aspect
.
“Stealing”
Active: Thief- steals to other’s detriment
Passive: Rogue- takes to gain for other’s benefit
.
“Serving”
Active: Knight- uses Aspect as a weapon, warrior class, protector, uses Aspect in reinvention to make new Aspect
Passive: Maid- uses Aspect in service of maintaining Aspect, take care of, preserver, clean up, keep people out of trouble, discovery of old Aspect
.
“Destroys” (villain-bent)
Active: Prince- plans to destroy, does away with, an agent against, causes destruction through Aspect
Passive: Bard- allows Aspect to be destroyed, or invites destruction through Aspect, capriciously and unpredictably, ‘wild card,’ makes a great change. “known for spontaneoUs and dramatic story-altering inflUence on the fate of a party. some of the more remarkable tales involve sUch parties, where the bard is single handedly responsible for their spectacUlar downfall or improbable victory. or both!”
.
“Brings an Ultimate Result”
Active: Lord- mastery, control, rules, strict
Passive: Muse- inspires, composes, relaxed rules/creativity
.
.
Aspect: “theme”
Aspects seem to be about the story, or what type of circumstances the story will reliably contrive to put a character in, and what themes the character will be pushed towards to do in response to it, as part of their character arcs. Themes/Rules a character’s life. Is a commentary on character so far as to how the ‘author’ judged their backstory to be set up for in the current story, usually phrased as if it’s being pushed into influencing character’s lives on a meta level. Void players may not amount to big moments (depending on class), Heart players keep running into variations of themself. It is possible for characters can overcome their aspect, but this appears to be harder to fight than acting against their class.
Aspects can be literal, (breath=wind powers, space= teleportation), and also can be weaponized against the constraints of the story. Light/Void aspects especially work well on a metaphorical level. Time/Space are the same thing in quantum physics, and required by every Game session.
I noticed it’s possible they all have vague destruction-death/creation-life aligned themes.
*Not much info on Doom or Rage.
.
“Green Sun/Black Hole: Endings and Beginnings/loop”
Time: death, endings, time, always a time traveler. copies of yourself.
Space: propagation, beginnings, distance, breeding, space, always the forge lighter. loneliness.
.
“Relevance/Fortune, Absence of Knowledge and Knowledge” (blindness problems)
Void: nothingness, absence of attention, impossible to know, blackout, darkness, irrelevant (like dead ghosts), hard to keep track of or understand “Void is easily the most mysterious aspect, the one which inherently defies rational understanding. This makes it particularly fascinating, and just as frustrating, to light players such as myself. Casting illumination upon nothing itself is futile. Current Fan-Troll Classpects
Believe me, I may get a LOT of grief for the new ones, and I may even change two of the Titles...
As I understand them:
Time Time itself, fatalism, destiny.
Breath Freedom, action, and wind.
Doom Destruction of any kind. Fate, destiny. Endings.
Blood Unity, compassion,
Heart Soul or self. Duality, splintering, differential of body and soul.
Space Energy, Matter, space, and direction.
Mind Predictions, actions, intentions, personality.
Light Luck, or lack thereof. Also actual illumination.
Void Absence, seclusion, isolation, lack. Generally bare hands, 100% Dersite Hide view.
Rage Anger, strength, insanity, unpredictability.
Hope Impossible becomes slightly less impossible. Doubling, strength, confidence.
Life Revivals, accelerated growth, augments.
-X-
Fear- Power from opponent's fears or own fears, possible -> impossible (Like stolen Hope, but targeted/specific and much more powerful/intentional) [CAN'T Happen]
Pride- Impossible -> possible through force, strength, view (Like Hope, but targeted/specific and much more powerful/intentional)  [WILL Happen]
Grace- Strength, speed, luck, ability to edit events (Like Light, but targeted/specific and a lot more powerful/intentional)   [Things WILL go right]
Fault- Imposed lack of luck, sabotage, destruction (Like stolen Light, but targeted/specific and much worse/intentional)   [Things CAN’T go right]
Maid Preservation/protection through Aspect. (Casting)
Page Builds their Aspect and releases it with great power. (Longest journey.)
Mage Knows all about their aspect, and all ways to use it. (No abilities to date)
Knight Lives in, and wields powerfully, their aspect. (Sessions dramatically lack their aspect)
Rouge Takes the Aspect for others' use. Rarely for self. Constructive redistribution.
Sylph Heals/restores using/access to Aspect Almost always motherly.
Seer Guides and directs, unable to use.
Thief Takes from others for personal use. (Deficient in their own aspect)
Heir Consumed by/protects/is protected by their Aspect.
Bard Invites/allows destruction to/through their Aspect. (Wild cards, can be major help/hindrance)
Prince Causes destruction to/through their Aspect. (Among the most powerful, in the right direction)
Witch Manipulates/unlocks aspect, breaks rules of aspect
-X-
Nurse Slightly heals counter-Aspects through Aspects (heals Heart through Mind, etc.)
King Guides/directs Aspect directly, suffering massively in counter-aspect
Judge Tilts the power level of others through their own Aspect, wild card
Clerk Identifies all of Aspect, brings extra of Aspect and trades for counter-Aspect  (Gains Void by sacrificing Light)
So yeah a lot of this is remedial for seasoned Homestucks (and yes I might have gotten this wrong on the canon Aspects/Titles, but for now I needed to set down a baseline for making new ones)
Obviously Nurse and Clerk are stand-ins for now, as I haven’t thought of anything better. Who knows, I might keep them.
Criticisms are obviously welcomed, just... if you are generically upset at new added titles, please take this with a grain of salt as it’s purely meant to flesh out my own fan-trolls. And yes I’m using custom blood colors. That’s intentional.
The whole concept is exploring the idea that Sburb is specific to which session you started, and that every single copy/group that’s started will split off into an entirely new dimension where things happen a little differently, as they’re paired up with a corresponding Troll timeline.
I’m playing with AU’s. Please don’t judge me.

OK so now that we have canon descriptions of aspects I decided to give god tier titles to Phineas and Ferb and their friends (classes may not be as accurate except Candace’s). I’m pretty satisfied with my choices:
Phineas - Mage of Breath
Ferb - Maid of Void
Candace - Thief of Time
Isabella - Witch of Blood
Baljeet - Seer of Mind
Buford - Knight of Rage
Phineas (Breath) - Those bound to the aspect of Breath are, above all, expansive. Flexible and driven, they leave an impact wherever they go. Like the breeze itself, they are able to sweep others up to carry along in their wake, but also like the breeze, they can be difficult to catch hold of or tie down. Although Breath-bound do make very good leaders, breath tends to be a very personal aspect. Often, heroism comes along as an offshoot of them pursuing their own personal stories. They lead by example, and will routinely be surprised that others look up to or feel inspired by them. They have a tendency to underestimate themselves, and not always out of poor self-esteem. They were just doing their own thing. At their best Breath-bound are motivated, adaptable, and forward thinking, but at their worst they can be volatile, avoidant, and gullible.
Ferb (Void) - Those bound to the aspect of Void are the universe's secret-keepers. The unknown doesn't scare them - where others might see emptiness, they see potential. A blank page, an empty canvas, that's what the Void-bound live for. They value mystery and the unexplained, and are not particularly bothered by not having all the answers. Where others might be compelled to go out and seek answers, the Void-bound lean more toward casting doubt on what is already considered fully understood. They don't take much on faith and would rather live in a state of confusion than believe something that might be untrue or bow to intellectual authority. After all, in order for something new to be built, the old, rotting foundation must often be razed. At their best, Void-bound are wise, intuitive, and vibrant. At their worst they can be dismissive, indecisive, and apathetic.
Candace (Time) - Those bound to the aspect of Time are fighters, full stop. Their lives are often marked by struggle, not so much because fate has it in for them, but because they are fundamentally incapable of just accepting things as they come. They value action over passive acceptance, even if that may not be the wisest or safest choice. Don't try to tell a Time-bound to sit still and look pretty. They are very goal-focused, and tend to value the destination over the journey, and you won't find them making that journey in any traditional sort of way. To quote cheesy posters found on many a guidance counselor's wall - "impossible is just a word". If you need a miracle, they are who you call. At their best, the Time-bound are empathetic and relentless problem-solvers. At their worst they are ruthless, defensive, and impulsive.
Isabella (Blood) - Those bound to the aspect of Blood draw their strength from bonds, from the trust and camaraderie that blooms among a group of people who all share a single vision. Blood-bound are absolutely leaders, but they inhabit more of an inspirational role than a commanding one. They are prophets, rather than generals, giving others the strength and motivation to keep fighting. The Blood-bound can dispense excellent advice even when their own lives and interpersonal relationships are disasters. They can be very "do as I say, not as I do" types. A Blood-bound can often be found on a sinking ship, forcing an endeavor forward with sheer stubborn force of will. No matter how bad things go, a Blood-bound can always count on friends and allies. At their best, they are charismatic, uplifting, and magnetic. At their worst they can be sullen, unkind, and set-in-their-ways.
Baljeet (Mind) - Those bound to the aspect of Mind are - you guessed it - the universe's great thinkers. But don't for a second think that means that they have all the answers. They are very concerned with remaining rational, and they have such a firm hold on the constant conjunction of their thinking that it's easy for them to see the multitudes of the choices laid out before them, which often leaves them frozen and unable to act. That said, when a Mind-bound finally launches into action, they can execute a plan with unbelievable grace and precision. Their identity is fluid - it can change from day-to-day, from thought-to-thought, from interaction-to-interaction. Remaining logical is more important to them than building up a solid foundation of "self." At their best they are great innovators, architects, and creators. At their worst they can be nasty, inflexible, and indecisive.
Buford (Rage) - Those bound to the aspect of Rage are bringers of chaos. They posses great contempt for lies or false ideas, including the stability that false ideas can impart. To them, the true is far more important than the good; they would tear down a system just to destabilize it if, by their reckoning, it is built on faulty premises. Often the Rage-bound prefer anarchy to any of the alternate forms of civilization, which they believe to be riddled with lies and foolishness and obedient masses. They are bringers of confusion and doubt, and they can be frustratingly difficult to convince otherwise when they have attached themselves to an idea. If they sound dangerous, they are. The Rage-bound tend to be most volatile and unpredictable of the aspects. At their best they are original, revolutionary, and fearless. At their worst they are cruel, uncompromising, and vicious.

Vowed For Eternity (Chapter 12)
AO3 Link
Punishment
Notes: I’m so sorry for the cliffhanger. Please, don’t hate me.
More weeks passed as both Rumple and Belle dedicated their separate times to trying to find something that could guaranteed them that the future of their family was safe. Belle talked to Fiona more often than she could have ever imagined that she someday would and found out that the woman was incredibly kind. She showed a great concern with her and the baby, one that she couldn't quite understand, but that she appreciated now that the prisoner seemed to be the only one who cared about what happened to them.
The girl was desperate for some affection and an assurance that things would be fine, so as she watched her child grow heavier, rounding her stomach and changing her whole body, Belle begged to the gods for it to be a girl. She already loved that baby so very much, that the princess knew that she wouldn't bear losing it.
Meanwhile, Rumplestiltskin continued to fight to find the Blue Fairy. He had tried summoning her, but obviously she hadn't come, so the was left to face one last flicker of hope of getting any useful information, before he gave up and sat himself to wait, torturing himself with anxiety until Belle gave birth. Liking it or not, he had to speak to his mother at least one more time.
It took him a lot of courage to walk to her room, where Fiona was cuffed to the ground inside the magic-protected cage. He glanced at her, almost feeling pity for how weak she looked, thinking that if she wasn't his negligent mother, then he may have had mercy and freed her after that day, but she had done lots of bad things and he couldn't just let her go.
Fiona lifted her eyes to him, the same brown ones he used to have, when he was just a common man, a coward, but at least not a monster. It all changed when she came and he wished that he never really met her, because maybe then, he could have lived his little miserable mortal life and never got to meet Belle, so he would have never destroyed her life nor conceived that child he meant to abandon. His mother gave him a tiny smirk, sitting herself up.
"It's been a long time since you last came to visit your mama."
He couldn't swallow down her words, she was never a true mother to him, all she did was to ruin what was already pretty bad without her. His expression became cold, his eyes narrowing at the prisoner.
"It is all your fault," Rumplestiltskin bounced. "Every single thing I have been true it's your fault."
"We both know that this is not exactly true," Fiona said, shaking her head. "I've never meant to any of this to happen."
"And yet, it did."
A long, tired sigh left her. She no long looked like the powerful fairy he once had met, her time in there, with her magic blocked, was slowly weakening her and even though she wasn't going to die, she would still feel terribly ill.
"What do you want, Rumple?"
"You know who I seek," he replied.
"Blue," she completed, fixing her glance to on the ground. "You will never find her, my son. She grew powerful through the years."
He sucked a breath, but the oxygen didn't seem to be enough. Rumplestiltskin have never hated someone like he hated the Blue Fairy, not even his parents, for who he felt such resentment. No, that twisted woman had started all of this, she was the reason he became the Dark One and she was the very reason he feared so much the future of his own child.
"It has to be a way," the imp remarked. "She linked me to this curse and this fate, I need her magic to reverse the sittuation."
"Blue's magic can't reverse this. She might have created the path that would be your ending, but the prophecy is unpredictable and unbreakable."
Of course, he knew it, he knew from the very start and he should have never given himself the chance of starting a whole new mess. He should have declined King Maurice's call, let Avonlea fall and never set his eyes on the most beautiful princess of all the realms. His Belle, his precious little wife. Rumplestiltskin's eyes closed momentanelly when the remorse hit him again.
"Do you remember of how the Seer first told us that I would sire the child destined to kill me?" He asked his mother. "I fear my days are counted now."
"And what do you intend to do?"
"Send the baby away by the moment it is born," Rumplestiltskin shrugged and felt as if his heart was being smashed inside his chest.
His mother's eyes for wide as if she cared for what happened to that babe, what a stupid joke, he thought. Fiona cared about no one but herself, if she could move herself to even feel some kind of compassion for any person, then she would have never done the things she did. That fairy ruined her own life and dragged everyone around her together.
"Would you separate a mother from her child?" Fiona asked and this time, her voice was shaken. "Would you destroy your own wife? Let your child grow up without a father?"
"I have no choice."
"Perhaps, there is something you haven't considered yet," she whispered.
So, finally, Fiona was giving up. Finally, she was going to tell him something useful, he didn't understand why, but he knew that he needed to hear it.
"And what would that be?"
"Pay attention to the prophecy's words," Fiona adviced. "You need to be the True Love of the woman that bears this son."
Jaw-dropped, Rumplestiltskin stepped closer to the cage. She was right. The prophecy required a love pure and true, and although Belle had been pure of heart and body when they first slept together, he was pretty sure that she did not love him, otherwise he would have her trust.
"I haven't thought about that," the imp murmured.
"You are not Belle's True Love, are you?"
"No, I don't think so," he replied and the confession made him feel both lighter with the possibility of not having to depart from his child and the univitable true that just like he always thought, nobody could ever love him. "I took care of not letting her love me, so our marriage wouldn't be pure."
Fiona nodded, the sadness returning to her face as she fixed her glance on the cuffs around her wrists.
"So that is it," his mother stated. "This child is safe. I bet it isn't even a boy and you will have beautiful daughter in a couple of months."
Against his best will, Rumple's mind was filled with images of a little girl, curled auburn hair, bright blue eyes and Belle's beauty. Nothing like him, not even a small inch. She would be his wife's girl bone to bone, graceful and kind, filling his days with light. Yes, he would love her very well, buy her all of the most beautiful gowns, teach her how to spin and maybe how to use magic, so she could always protect herself, even when he wasn't around.
"A daughter..." The Dark One comtemplated. "Aye, I would like that."
Slowly a smile spreaded in Fiona's face and she nodded. "You're safe, Rumplestiltskin, my son. Your child will be safe."
And for a while he accepted that as an irrevogable truth, because he needed that hope. If Rumplestiltskin believed in that, then maybe he could do right by Belle and he could allow himself to care enough to at least make sure that she was fine.
"I swear I'm an innocent, I've never done anything wrong," the peasant midwife said, walking some steps behind him, the fear clear in her trembling voice. "Please, please let me go."
If he knew that she was going to be so stupid, he would have looked for a midwife in another village, perhaps even in another realm, where not every single being knew who he was and feared him. But he didn't have much time to think, or he would end up convincing himself that Belle didn't need any support, exactly like the voices of the previous Dark Ones kept screams at him, however for the affection he felt for his sweet little wife, he needed to do this. At least, if someone happened to her, his conscience wouldn't kill him with the guilty that he knew that would come.
Rumplestiltskin's hadn't seen her in months and he bet that by now she was already showing a huge bump, which was one of the reasons why he couldn't see her. If he did, the Dark One was pretty sure that he would fall on his knees in front of her, humiliating himself and asking for forgiveness.
"Stop this, your annoying woman!" The imp spitted at the midwife, dryly, looking over his shoulder. "I didn't bring you here to kill you, I need you to check on my wife."
Her eyes widened.
"You have a wife?"
"Yes," he answered, in a high-pitched tone, grabbing her arm and leading her through the staircase until they were standing in front of Belle's door. "Now, you'll enter her chambers and examine her. I want to be sure that she and the child are healthy."
"Oh, I - " she swallowed. "Alright, I think I can do this."
"Go," Rumplestiltskin commanded.
Nodding, the woman pushed the door open and entered the chambers, hearing it slam shut behind her, locking her in there. Mrs. Potts took a deep breath, telling herself that there was no reason for the Dark One to be lying, as everybody knew that he was very direct with everything he wanted, but there was no one in sight and it got her concerned.
"Hello?" The midwife called. "Hello, there is someone in here?"
She heard steps coming from behind her and turned around to look at an entrance that seemed to lead to some kind of closet. A woman emerged from there. Well, not a woman, but a young lass in long-sleeved winter gown, her tummy apparent in the curve of the dress.
"Rumple?" She asked before setting her eyes on the other woman. "Who are you?"
"My name is Mrs. Potts, I'm a midwife. Your husband brought me here to see if you are alright."
Her mouth opened in a perfect "o" shape, her delicate hands coming up to stroke her belly as her surprise turned into a happy smile.
"He did?" The girl asked, quite stunned. "Oh, well, I'm Belle."
"Yeah," Mrs. Potts confirmed. "Do you allow me to check on you?"
"Mm, sure."
Belle was astonished with the fact that after all this time without a word to her, Rumplestiltskin had really sent someone to see if their baby was growing healthy. That meant that he cared, that he may be afraid, but the child still had some importance for him. It was the best thing that had happened with Belle in a long time. She wasn't all alone, she realised.
There still might be a chance for them, after all. That made her indescribably happy and hopeful like she never thought she would feel again, because lately for Belle it was her against the world to protect her child, she hadn’t dare to consider that Rumple would give a damn about it, not even if it was a girl, because he showed no interest in fixing things with her or just coming up to ask if she was feeling alright. But the stupid imp was just hiding his feelings as always and she was glad to know that.
The midwife approached her, looking around the room. "Please, my lady, lay on the bed."
Obeying her, Belle climbed up the bed, stretching her legs in front of herself and allowing Mrs. Potts to come closer and place both hands on her belly, pressing some places. It felt odd and as her fingers moved, she knew exactly where the babe was nestled, guessing where it could be its feet, its head, like she had done for the last couple of weeks, when she realised that the weight that was making walking a tiresome task, meant that her child was big enough to already be a completely formed person.
"Do you feel the baby moving?" The midwife inquired.
"No," she shooked her head. "Not yet."
Mrs. Potts face contracted in a frown and Belle's heart skipped a beat. She could feel deep down that it was a bad sign.
"Alright."
"Is something wrong?" Belle asked, frightened.
"I'm just checking," Mrs. Potts guaranteed, moving her hands up in a new exam that left her with cheek s burning in colour, because the midwife pressed her hands to the sides of her breasts, moving her fingers with a furrow. "Are your breasts feeling uncomfortably sensible?"
At each moment, Belle grew more desperate. First, she didn't seem happy with what she found examining her belly and now this.
"Not really," the girl replied. "I'm not liking this expression of yours. Is everything really fine?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't it be?" Mrs. Potts smiled, standing up. "Well, make sure that you eat vegetables and meat, that will be good for both you and the child."
"Sure," Belle said, still not trusting her words. "Thank you, Mrs. Potts."
The midwife left the room, knowing that the lady was concerned and feeling quite preoccupied herself for what she had found out. Mrs. Potts didn't want to have to face the terrible Dark One and tell him what she had to, but she couldn't just keep it from him or, when he discovered the truth, he would seek her and kill her.
Rumplestiltskin was waiting for her outside, but he transported them to the great hall with his magic, so they could talk without any chance of Belle hearing them.
"So, is she alright?" He immediately asked
"The lady is in perfect healthy milord, but - "
"But what?"
Mrs. Potts swallowed, glancing at the floor. It wasn’t an uncommon situation, as she had been acting as a midwife for a long time and had seen it a lot of times, but she knew what came next and it always hurt the same as the first woman she attended with that problem.
She knew that the tears would eventually come, the grief, but she had no idea of how the Dark One could react to this.
"I fear that you might have a stillborn child."
The imp felt as his heart had stopped, the whole world fading around him. So that was it, now he was being punished for all his crimes in the worst way ever and he asked himself if that wasn’t happening because he had wished with every strength he had, that that baby had never been conceived. It would be better if it didn’t exist, he had told himself, many, many times. But now, he regretted it.
"Gods..."
"It doesn't move inside her womb and she is already swollen enough to feel the babe turning and kicking, but she claims to feel nothing. And I believe her body is not producing any milk to feed it too," Mrs. Potts sighed. "I think the child can be dead inside her."
