Skateboards? Check. Surfboards? Double check. Bonfire wood? Triple check.
Mosquito repellent? Well…
“If you keep scratching it, they will only get worse,” Lotor advised oh so wisely, but it was hard to take his words seriously when he was looking up at you from your lap.
“I can’t help it. So itchy…” you whined, resisting the temptation to pinch and dig your nail into your poor bumpy face, “How come they didn’t go after you?”
“They did. Twice. And those that lived spread the word that my blood does not taste very good.”
Letting out a small "hnngh” noise, you pinched his cheeks in playful retaliation. He may have the last word, but you were the one with the upper hand. Though, judging by the smug grin plastered on his face, none of your antics were affecting him. Well, not in the way you intended. In fact, he seemed rather like a content fat cat resting his head on your smooth thighs like so. All he needed now was -
Lotor interrupted your thoughts by gently keeping your wrist still and pecking each of your fingertips with loving kisses, leaving hidden messages for you to remember.
I love that you are so playful.
I love that you are so adventurous.
I love that you choose to stay happy.
I love that you love me.
I love...you.
Even years after being married, you still had that wild spirit about you, one that matched Lotor’s in the same yet completely different way. You were the land. He was the sea. Together, you two fit into each other’s lives perfectly. No matter where you brought him, whether that be around Earth, around Olkarion’s forests, deep within the mermaid’s trenches, or up in the moons of Taujeer, you truly proved to him that home is where the heart is.
“You are beautiful, dear.”
And it was true. The way the glow of the blue fire shadowed your face showed that hidden beauty he couldn’t bear witness during the day. The starry night sky canvasing behind your head was so picture perfect, he could spend an entire lifetime painting and it would not even come close to the real thing. And your eyes, stars, your gorgeous eyes. Lotor swears that in the right light, at the right time, with the right mood, he could see all of life’s answers reflect in them.
The only response you granted to his compliment was a radiant smile and the feeling of your warm palm cupping his cheek. Holding him, cherishing him for who he truly is right here and right now. Not an Emperor. Not a royal, not a diplomat, not the savior of the universe, but a man who was able to freely love with all of his heart. And you accepted him, never one to judge someone’s worth of love because of such silly titles. His status meant nothing to you and he would have it no other way.
For all the times he told you that he was uncomfortable with sex, uncomfortable with the history of his past mates using it as a way to “claim” him as a powerful status figure, being bare to you now as a simple wanderlusting traveler was life-changing. It was what he needed and wanted, whether he knew it or not. You helped him in the best possible way by showing through example that love?
Love has rules. Love has boundaries. And abiding by those with respect is how you two withstood the test of time itself.
Though, that isn’t to say he didn’t show you your true potential, either.
“Will you sing tonight? Grace me once more with your enchanting voice that could calm even the most raging of seas?” he spoke poetically, teetering on the tip of pleading and wanting, “Please. The stars and the moon will draw constellations of the lost siren from the woodlands.”
Ukulele? That was the first thing you packed.
With practiced preparation, you were already tuning your instrument and strumming it into perfection. You would have left your voice fading in the dark if it hadn’t been for Lotor. Or rather, for his inspiring encouragement that could move mountains and bring life back to barren lands. He knew what his strengths were and he knew how to utilize it for your sake. Freedom of expression was something he learned on his own long ago and he was more than glad to bring it out of you.
For all his bravado talk, he really was a master at weaving words into golden rays of sunlight. And you would forever be grateful that shine was what re-inspired you to sing to your heart's content.
“No road trip would be complete without some jams,” you happily finished off with a single strum, “Any requests, big boy?”
Lotor chuckled at that nickname, recalling the meaning behind it. You sure are a big boy. Must be for all that heart you have.
“You know my favorite.”
Ah, a classic. One you didn’t mind singing on repeat and one he never grew tired of hearing. Lotor once asked if you were a descendant of mermaids because he always felt like he was floating on cloud nine after your song ended. He said he felt euphoric. Peaceful. High, oh so high. He even shared that he would gladly surrender all his kisses and s’mores if only to hear you lure him again with such an ethereal tone.
With a quick drink of water, you cleared your throat to let your voice soothe both of your wandering souls. Nothing but you two existed right now. Not the fire, not the trees and the moon and the sand and waves. Just you two, invulnerable to the vulnerabilities of a heavy life. This would be a moment neither of you would ever forget.
“Come with me,
And you’ll be
In a world
Of pure imagination.”
Lotor hooded his eyes, his heart singing along with yours in perfect synchronization.

Dual Enter: A Completely Serious Undertale AU
🤺🥜🧙‍♂️🏹🍝💀🐐🐟🦎❤️🌳🐜🏄‍♂️🧜‍♀️👨‍🏫🎭
Tired single parent Dale Tuner takes his daughter, Lea Turned, on a hiking trip to take their minds off his recent divorce from his husband and step-father of Lea, Elan Trued. Forced by a sudden thunderstorm to take shelter, Dale witnesses Lea fall down a hole in the back of the cave, vanishing into the dark - not seeing that something, a sort of dark tendril, had wrapped around her ankle.
Panicking, he tries to call for help only to find there’s no mobile signal. Faint noises from below cause him to realise that his daughter is still alive; coming closer to the hole, he too finds himself falling into the darkness...
He wakes up on a patch of flowers and is greeted by nobody at all. He makes his way through the Ruins and meets a bizarre, almost goat-like humanoid lady who tells him that Lea has been and gone. That there’s no way of escaping the cave by going through the hole or any other way. She tells him that Lea is going to the castle, where the only method of escaping their rocky prison awaits. But not for Lea, only for the monsters - since the method requires her soul.
Furious, Dale sets out to rescue his daughter and find a way to get out of there. But time’s ticking, as the monsters are looking hard for their key to freedom...
Out in the land of the monsters, Dale finds a place torn into pieces by four clashing powers and on the brink of war. There’s a revolt brewing against King Asgore, three armies lead by three almost-identical figures forming as the impatience of the trapped monsters reaches boiling point. Lea has become a pawn for these armies, which their leaders each seeking to snatch the key to freedom and the eternal gratitude of monsterkind. Whoever takes the human’s soul first will be the winner of their three-way war. And they all want to win.
As tensions rise, a new phenomenon has gripped the underground - duelling. Since there’s so few monsters, an all-out war to the death would likely wipe them all out. So they’ve developed a system of non-lethal duels, with each monster capturing their enemies like chess pieces. Of course, a human has the power to become not just the most powerful but the deadliest duelist in all the land.
And in the midst of all this, a billowing, boiling shadow and a bright, blinding light lurk in the dreams of monsters and in the places none dare to tread.
If Dale isn’t careful, both monsterkind and humankind could bite the dust.
Residents of the underground include:
Dale Tuner - unwilling recent arrival. Once a widower and now divorced, he nevertheless has a loving relationship with his eleven-year-old daughter Lea. Like many, he copes with things through the use of humour. Enjoys neo-Dadaism. Fortunately, he used to be in the fencing class in high school. Unfortunately, high school was a long time ago.
Lea Turned - unwilling pawn and modern Alice down the rabbit hole. At eleven years old, she’s not sure what she wants to be. But she’s willing to try a lot of things. Probably on the spectrum. Always has her camera with her, along with her umbrella and MP3 player. Doesn’t like mustard.
Earl Ed Nut - the one and only Ed Nut, accept no imitations. A former Captain of the Royal Guard who vanished suddenly one day after getting into a fight with - and some say trying to assassinate - King Asgore, he reappeared suddenly after a long absence. But not alone... Bold and brash, he charges into battle with his trusty sword and shield.
Real Ed Nut - the one and only Ed Nut, accept no imitations. A former Captain of the Royal Guard who vanished suddenly one day after getting into a fight with - and some say trying to assassinate - King Asgore, he reappeared suddenly after a long absence. Unlike the armoured, sword-wielding Earl, this sneaky lad favours a bow and twin daggers.
Neutral Ed - the one and only Ed Nut, accept no imitations. A former Captain of the Royal Guard who vanished suddenly one day after getting into a fight with - and some say trying to assassinate - King Asgore, he reappeared suddenly after a long absence. Uses powerful magics of earth, wind, fire, and soul. Appears to be biding his time.
Alder Tune - a sort of semi-sapient tree that shapes its trunks and branches into a natural woodwind instrument. Can also slap you silly with those branches if look like you’re not enjoying its tunes.
Tad Unreel - a merman with legs. Despite being a monster in a world full of magic, they manage to be the Fox Mulder of the underground. Won his legs in a surfboarding contest but refuses to explain how. The only one who believes the old stories about the Unaltered and the Altered Nu.
El Nude Rat - a shaved rat. A horrible little man. Yet somehow very popular amongst some residents of the underground.
Tundra Eel - an eel that likes cold places but craves hot cocoa with whip cream and marshmallows. Pity you can’t drink hot cocoa underwater.
Daunt Leer - a crabby old witch with a foul expression. A famed spellcaster named after her signature spell. Or is it the other way around? Despite her magical power, she’s aligned herself with the Real Ed.
Ant Dueler - a follower of the Earl, they might be small but their sword is still sharp! While you were busy being heterosexual, they were studying the blade. Sold their gender years ago for more swords.
Tan Dueler - a surfboarding magician-duellist and follower of Neutral Ed. Has a grudge against Tad Unreel for reasons she refuses to explain.
Renal Duet - a pair of kidney-monsters who want to become idol singers. They’re conjoined twins but singing in harmony isn’t coming easy...
A Nerd Lute - a living, speaking instrument who’s very geeky. Part of the Renal Duet’s band along with Real Tuned and Lunar Teed.
Lad Tureen - a keen young chef who specialises in soups. Hot, hot soups that can serve as a weapon in a pinch. Usually when people tell them that they’re sick of eating soup. Serves the Earl... lots of soup.
Lad Tenure - a keen young teacher who’s a minefield of useful information and dubious facts. Follows the Real Ed.
Neutral Lad - a keen young illusion specialist. Acts as a spy for Neutral Ed, though nobody knows it because they’re the master of disguise.
Ultra Need - he needs it! What is it? He doesn’t know, but he needs it! If you stick around him for too long, then you’ll need it too!
Tuna Elder - very old seafood. Follows King Asgore, hates humans.
Dental Rue - she wants your teeth when you’re done with them.
Aunt Elder - everyone’s auntie. Even an auntie to lost humans. Always has snacks and stickers ready, as well as advice that may or may not be useful. Something of a vodka aunt. Ex-Royal Guard. Hates the Earl.
The Unaltered - a mysterious shadowy force that follows Dale around and might have something to do with the disappearance and sudden reappearance of the three Ed Nuts. Doesn’t like humans or Asgore.
Altered Nu - they live in the light. Don’t go into the light. Don’t go into the light. Don’t go into the light. Don’t go into the light. Don’t go into the light.

right/wrong/neither
I recommend listening to this song while reading; it helps me focus and it might help you too. :)
When I began our class in public art in sound and listening, my way of thinking was very much rooted in discernible outcomes and notions of success. This was largely a product of the environments I had existed in growing up: intense, competitive academic spaces, playing sports, going to a well-regarded college. Even in my first year at Brown, the notion of comparative success was pushed forth; I was denied entry to classes due to a comparatively worse portfolio, writing sample, or application. Not only were opportunities to learn limited, once in class, creative assignments I submitted were deemed poor in quality because they were not up to par with the level of the rest of the class or did not meet expectations of a rigid rubric imposed by the professor. I questioned why the system existed in the way that promoted uniformity and rewarded following rigid instructions over organic growth and learning.
Even at a place like Brown University where a liberal education is championed, I felt limited in my ability to make choices for myself, questioning my every decision and my place on campus. Why did every decision I made feel “wrong”? Why did I constantly feel like I was in the “wrong” place, doing the “wrong” things? It was around this time of self-doubt that we read Miwon Kwon’s “The Wrong Place” and Judith Halberstam’s The Queer Art of Failure. For a long time, it had been explained to me that the greatest growth and discovery was made when I failed, when things didn’t work out, but I was still resistant. Halberstam’s writing expressed a similar sentiment in a way that spoke to me greatly. As Halberstam explains in the introduction, “Failure preserves some of the wondrous anarchy of childhood and disturbs the supposedly clean boundaries between adults and children, winners and losers,” and later points out that “[failure] provides the opportunity to use these negative affects to poke holes in the toxic positivity of contemporary life” (Halberstam 3). Halberstam’s argument recognizes the importance of positivity but also the ability for negativity to shift our perspective and view things through a different or critical scope.
In a similar vane, Kwon’s writing recognizes that objective rights/wrongs are nonexistent, but our relationship to objects, beings, and places is what defines our sense of right and wrong: “The determination of right and wrong is never derived from an innate quality of the object in question, even if some moral absolutes might seem to preside over the object. Rather, right and wrong are qualities that an object has in relation to something outside itself… The more important point here is that it is we who are wrong for this kind of ‘new’ space” (Kwon 38-39). Kwon explains that ending up in the “wrong” place can often lead us to new discoveries about ourselves that we would miss if we follow rigid, “correct” paths. I really love one of her closing statements in the piece:
“Often we are comforted by the thought that a place is ours, that we belong to it, perhaps even come from it, and therefore are tied to it in some fundamental way. Such places (‘right’ places) are thought to reaffirms our sense of self, reflecting back to us an unthreatening picture of a grounded identity. This kind of continuous relationship between a place and a person is what is deemed lost, and needed in contemporary society. In contrast, the wrong place is generally thought of as a place where one fells one does not belong—unfamiliar, disorienting, destabilizing, even threatening. This kind of stressful relationship to a place is, in turn, though to be detrimental to a subject’s capacity to constitute a coherent sense of self and the world” (Kwon 42).
Kwon and Halberstam’s discussion of failure and place bring me to one of the first posts I made on our class soundblog, a podcast profiling the artist Emily A. Sprague, a founding member of the band Florist and an independent artists as well, working primarily in ambient music and creating with Eurorack modular synthesizers. Hailing from a rural community in the Catskill Mountains, Sprague explains how space has shaped her processes of creation: “Every studio I’ve ever had has been in the place that I’ve been living in… You learn from that, being in spaces that aren’t ‘Studio Bs’… You just learn to work with what you have” (Sound + Process). On her origins, Sprague later explains, “Community has always been something that I’ve known to be incredibly hard to find and also the best and most rewarding and inspiring thing that you can experience. I’m from a small town in a pretty rural area; I didn’t really find people until I was older than I really felt a part of a community with, with making music” (Sound + Process). Like Halberstam’s argument, Sprague has repeatedly tried and experimented with space and technique, creating new ways to approach modular synth and pushing the boundaries of genre. Like Kwon explains, Sprague has made new discoveries in her process of making through the space she’s in—not that place is right or wrong, but just that they are different, and produce a different result.
With her process of making rooted in modular synthesis, it is hard to deny Sprague’s precedents. On June 7th, 2017, Sprague made an Instagram post of a single book on a hardwood table: Daphne Oram’s An Individual Note of Music Sound, and Electronics. Daphne Oram, born in 1925 and passed away in 2003, was one of the central figures in the development of British experimental electronic music (Anomie Publishing). Oram declined a place at the Royal College of Music to become a music balancer at the BBC, and she went on to become the co-founder and first director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (Anomie). Leaving the BBC in 1959 to pursue commercial work in television, advertising, film and theater, Oram also made her own music for recording and performance, continuing her personal research into sound technology. Sound technology was a passion Oram cultivated since her childhood in rural Wiltshire (Anomie). Eventually her home in Kent became an unorthodox studio and workshop, which she crafted on a minimal budget (Anomie). Additionally, Oram developed her pioneering equipment, sounds, and ideas at her home studio. A significant part of her personal research was the invention of a machine that offered a new form of sound synthesis – the Oramics machine (Anomie). Her biography further cements her as influential to contemporary electronic artists, with Oram’s contribution to electronic music receiving considerable attention from new generations of composers, sound engineers, musicians, musicologists and music lovers around the world (Anomie).
Like Wendy Carlos, Oram was a pioneer of synthesizer music and technology, definitively changing the ways her contemporaries approached synthesis, as well as generations for years to come. It seems as though Carlos, Oram, and Sprague are inextricably linked. As Carlos focuses intently on her studio in her website/primary form of external communication, it is evident that the artist considers her studio as a point of pride and importance (Wendy Carlos website). If Wendy Carlos’s studio is Persian rugs, felines, and the crackle of a fireplace on a frigid winter day and Oram’s is a quiet converted oasthouse, then Sprague’s studio is a surfboard leaned against a corner next to a human-sized floor plant as sun pours in through a skylight on a warm California morning (Kheshti). Like Kheshti’s relationship with Carlos, I feel connected to Sprague in a similar way. I do not mean to equate our relationships or interpolate myself in the discussion of electronic musicians, but I do find great joy in listening to electronic music and feel that it is an important part of my life, similar to the way Kheshti describes.
There is something extremely childlike, imaginative, and fantastical about home studios. They are places for experimentation and imagination, mostly unbounded by judgement or criticism, creating a place to take risks and make new discoveries. In many ways a home studio allows for a democratic education of sorts, a place where a creator can speak their own language and have internal dialogue, unrestricted by rigid constraints that may be imposed externally otherwise, and even explore the inherent fun in learning (hooks 43-44).
The ability for these artists to create in unexpected places and to push the boundaries of their genre and craft remind me of Fluxus artists like Yoko Ono or Alison Knowles. There is an ambiguity in place and correctness of a Fluxus score. They are not defined by doing things in a certain way or a certain place or for a certain outcome, but doing for the sake of doing, trying, experimenting, learning, and moving forward. I recently watched a film that referenced Yoko Ono’s “Ceiling Painting, Yes Painting” (1966), where the person interacting climbs a ladder to a magnifying glass in order to discern a tiny speck on the ceiling that reads “YES” (Guggenheim Bilbao). I think this piece is beautifully poetic in a number of ways, but specifically for its affirmation in discovery, and doing so in a playful, almost childlike and imaginative manner. On this note, I want to include some scores I wrote throughout the course of the semester for consideration, reflection, and response (dots indicate separate scores):
sit on a bench and be the last to break eye contact with a stranger • collect fallen leaves from the ground into a paper bag and deliver to someone • learn the language of a Tree and have a conversation • ask a loved one (or a complete stranger) to name a favorite song and listen to it in full • listen to your breath as you run up a steep hill and walk down slowly; listen to your breath as you walk up a steep hill and run down slowly • cut holes in an umbrella during a rainstorm and listen to the irony pour through • get a bicycle and ride across America • hold your palms and fingers gently over the tips of grass at dawn and wipe the dew across your cheeks • do nothing • sitting cross-legged on the floor, recount in detail to an audience (of any or no size) the most recent dream that you can remember • make a friend • look at the Atlantic Ocean; turn 180 degrees; walk; look at the Pacific Ocean • grab a cactus / smash a guitar • move fast so that wind becomes music
Through all these artists, authors, activists, and beyond, like Ono, Knowles, Carlos, Oram, Halberstam, Kwon, hooks, Kheshti, it is clear that approaching things not with notions of right or wrong, but with the intention of discovery, experimentation, and playful imagination is a valuable way of living. In the inscription to hook’s Teaching Community, the author quotes Paulo Freire: “It is imperative that we maintain hope even when the harshness of reality may suggest the opposite.” In many ways, these figures stand for just that: a rejection of the harshness of reality through creativity, experimentation, discovery, and a love for learning.

As the tiny waves tummy flatness, although to shore, the little sapling are forced to bend underneath the force for the waves. Always be have present way thus to their strength, but its flexibility allowed it to be able to so as well as return upright once the waves had subsided. Manly Bch. Manly Beach is a great day trip if you will want a visit belonging to the CBD by taking a boat. The trip itself is an agreeable 40 minute ride across the magnificent harbour and youll arrive near a palm tree lined beachfront with inviting waves as well as pubs and restaurants a concise stroll away on vacation. On the international arena, Melbourne houses some of the most popular events on the sporting calendar, such when compared to the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, The Australian Open Tennis and also the Melbourne Cup Horse Racing Carnival. When you are coming to Melbourne inside fall and winter months (March to September - remember seasons are reversed) catch a games of Aussie Rules Football. It's earthy, macho and gutsy. Down here, footy is not a passion, it is a religion.

7 Disturbingly Weird and Unusual Sports Around the World

7 Disturbingly Weird and Unusual Sports Around the World
Throughout the ages, many sports have been created that form a staple in modern day society. Football (both American and Soccer), Tennis, Basketball, Golf, Cricket – the list goes on. Then there are the not so well known, more unusual sports around the world that I feel need a special mention here!
From Ferret legging to Ostrich racing, here is my top 7 unusual sports around the world that deserve a special mention for thinking outside the box – for better or for worse 🙂
Black Footed Ferrets by skeeze licensed under CC0 Public Domain
1. Ferret-legging – England. Heading up the list of unusual sports around the world is Ferret legging. Not weird at all. I mean what sounds more plausible and enjoyable than placing two 18″ ferrets down one’s pants, then keeping them in there as long as you possibly can?
Ferret-legging has unknown origins, but made a comeback in the 1970’s, predominantly in Yorkshire, England. There aren’t many rules to it. The “competitor” needs to be sober and not on drugs. Oh, and he is not allowed to wear underwear beneath his pants. As for the Ferret, he/she cannot be sedated, and is required to have a full set of teeth that haven’t been manipulated in any way. Consider the fact that Ferrets have “claws like hypodermic needles and teeth like number 16 carpet tacks” [as described by Reg Mellor, former champion], and you can see how this can be, well, uncomfortable.
As for the records. The first record we have documented is 40 seconds in 1972. To me that’s more than long enough to have a couple of ferrets nibbling my bits. The current record is held by Frank Bartlett in 2010 – that managed to house these little critters for a staggering 5 hours and 30 minutes!
Extreme Ironing by nick@ licensed under CC BY 2.0
2.  Extreme Ironing – England. Another nail biting sport brought to you from the shores of England! Dare I mention I am originally from England? 😳 Extreme Ironing, or EI, originated from Leicester, England. Legend has it, Phil Shaw in 1997, started this exciting sport after a long hard days work at a knitwear factory. He had chores to do that night, including a laundry basket or 2 of ironing, but much preferred the idea of rock climbing – so he combined the two and EI was born!
The sport quickly recruited a huge following, spreading into international waters. In fact, the first Extreme Ironing World Championship was held in mid-September 2002, in Valley, Bavaria (Germany). Competitors came from countries including England, Germany, Austria, Australia and Croatia. The events were broken down into 5 categories:
Urban – Competitors ironed in, on top of, or around a broken down car.
Water – Participants would hop in a canoe, on a surfboard, or even a rubber ring and set sail on a fast moving river. And of course, iron at the same time!
Forest – Climb the biggest tree you could find, and you guessed it, iron at the top.
Rocky – Contestants were presented the challenge of climbing a custom made rock wall, while ironing a t-shirt of course.
Freestyle – The most extreme section of all. Pretty much anything goes and limited only by imagination, and perhaps safety standards.
Some of the more memorable EI moments include simultaneous underwater ironing, ironing on a motorway (freeway) and ironing while competing in a half marathon! Definitely one of the top unusual sports around the world!
Muggle Quidditch game in Vancouver by Anton Bielousov licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
3.  Quidditch – Vermont, USA. Queue Harry Potter music and magical broomsticks! No but really, Quidditch is a real sport, there’s even a world championship. For those not familiar with either Harry Potter or Quidditch – let me paint a picture. 2 teams, 7 players per team, each riding a broomstick. And when I say “riding”, I mean holding it under their private area as broomsticks don’t really magically fly.
Hooked already? Well there are 4 positions you can aspire to command in:
Chasers – pass the “Quaffle” (a slightly deflated volleyball) to other chasers who try to score points by throwing said Quaffle into one of 3 hoops on the opposing team’s side. 3 Chasers Per team
Beaters – try to hit Chasers with Bludgers. A Bludger is another type of ball in play – a slightly deflated dodge-ball. If a Beater hits a Chaser carrying the Quaffle, the Chaser must relinquish the Quaffle, remove their broomstick from their undercarriage, and touch their own hoops before rejoining play. 2 Beaters per team.
Keepers – like a soccer goal keeper. Keepers’ job is to keep the Quaffle from entering any of the 3 rings. He (or she) is immune to Bludgers. 1 Keeper per team.
Seekers – the heroes of the game! Sometimes. They come into play typically 18 minutes after the game has started (lazy!) and try to catch another type of ball, known as the “snitch”, that’s attached to a snitch runner’s back by means of a long yellow sock. If the snitch is caught – the game is won.
To be fair, the concept behind the broomstick is that it acts as a handicap, and makes the sport a little more challenging. But it still looks rather silly 🙂
Chess Boxing by WCBO licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
4.  Chess Boxing – Netherlands. A true match of brains and brawn! Match your wits and strategy against your opponent in a tactical game of Chess, and if that doesn’t work, well… just beat the crap out of him in the next round!
Chess boxing originated in 2003 and was invented by Lepe Rubingh. The idea actually stemmed from a graphic novel called Froid Équateur that featured the then fictitious sport. 21 years later, Lepe breathed life into the sport and it became real.
Chess Boxing consists of 11 rounds, of which 6 are Chess and 5 are Boxing. The rounds alternate between Chess and Boxing and are timed typically at 3 minutes each. You can win by either knocking your opponent out, by checkmate, or by points decision if the full 11 rounds are exhausted.
Definitely the coolest, unusual sport around the world on this list!
Never Too Old For Pooh-Sticks by Glyn Baker licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
5. Poohsticks, England. It’s not what you’re thinking, I promise! Much like Chess Boxing, Poohsticks’ origins also came from a novel, of sorts. A Winnie the Pooh book entitled The House at Pooh Corner. The annual Poohsticks world championship is held on the River Thames each year, and has been going strong since 1984!
The enthralling sport of Poohsticks involves competitors dropping their stick off of the upstream side of a bride, then frantically running to the other side. Whoever’s stick shows up first, wins!! What an adrenaline rush! Quidditch is starting to look pretty legit now!
The one cool thing to mention about Poohsticks, is that it was invented by Lynn David, whose intent was to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Throughout its existence, the sport has helped raise over 30,000 pounds (about $39,000) for the RNLI. Go Poohsticks!
Zorbing by Kim licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
6.  Zorbing – Auckland, New Zealand. OK, this one is actually pretty cool so I had to include it. Picture rolling down a steep hill within a giant orb made of see-through plastic, and you have Zorbing! Zorbing can also take place on water. Given the buoyancy of such orbs, it’s possible to “water Walk” while inside one.
The idea of Zorbing was capitalized upon by Dwane van der Sluis and Andrew Akers. They formed their own company, ZORB Limited, and successfully set out to commercialize their new sport worldwide via a sort of franchising system. Zorbing is now popular in countries such as Australia, The U.S., England, Sweden, Japan and even the North Pole!
Zorbing has some pretty awesome records:
Longest single roll distance – 1,870 ft
Longest time spent inside a Zorb – 3:49:06, Oxygen?!?!
Highest recorded speed – 32 mph
Quickest 100 meter dash – 26.59 seconds
Zorbing is not without its risks. There have been reports of people passing out due to lack of air, broken bones, and even a couple of deaths. Try at your own peril!
Ostrich Race Start by MyAngelG licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0
7.  Ostrich Racing – Florida, U.S. Let’s face it, horse racing is kinda lame. The natural progression? Sit atop an Ostrich instead! Ostrich racing is fairly common in the U.S and Africa, and quite popular. Every March, Arizona hosts the Chandler Ostrich festival, which typically attracts around 100,000 people and has been going for almost 30 years.
Ostriches are deceptively fast. They can run up to 45 mph and handle 16 ft in a single stride. A horse would typically gallop at around 25-30 mph as a reference point. However, it is a lot harder to stay atop an Ostrich than it is a horse – have you ever seen one run? For a start, they only have 2 legs!
Safety equipment is mandatory for jockeys – whose focus is as much to stay physically connected with the Ostrich as it is to win the race. Specialized saddles and reins are forged to aid the Jockey’s chance of survival. But enough words! Let’s see it in action:

Travel Tips -
The phrase is “planes, trains and automobiles.” But sometimes it feels like we forget all about the train altogether, favoring a car’s convenience or the speed of a flight. But trains are a great way to travel: You’ll never hit traffic and it’s much less hassle than you find at the airport. And best of all, certain American train routes bring you much closer to this country’s natural beauty, history and wonder than a car or plane ever could.
Take a look at some of the most scenic train rides in the U.S. below. Book a ticket, then sit back and watch it all roll by.
