#HARPERSMOVIECOLLECTION
2023
I watched Let Sleeping Corpses Lie AKA: The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue (1974)
Someone posted about this 1970's Zombie film and I'd never heard of it. It's highly rated and considered to be one of the best of the genre, so how could I pass it up?
A couple young people find themselves having to deal with a machine that raises the dead and the local police who believe them to be hippie satanist murderers.
First things first, the lead male character, George, is heavily unlikeable for a lot of the movie. A snotty dick to be precise. I agree with his views on cops and environmentalism, but he's awfully rude to everyone all the time. Our leading lady, Edna, however seems sweet and basic enough, and like it or not, she's stuck with George. So get used to him. He softens.
A lot of the characters are a bit unlikeable. The detective character makes George seem nice. The detective hates hippies and George and his "long hair and fa**ot clothes". Edna's sister is a dark eyed heroin addict, her husband who seems to be trying to help is wooden and boring enough to drive anyone to drug use. So don't expect to latch on to the characters for enjoyment.
The film is all overdubbed British accents, like a lot of European horror of the era. It had Italian releases and British releases and I'm sure an American release at some point. I like a good overdub in these old movies, from a film history standpoint.
It's a rather good looking film. A few scenes are too dark but the lighting and locations are usually quite nice. Solid enough editing as well. It looks and feels a bit more upscale than most zombie flicks of the era.
It's a bit slow. Stuff is happening, but it never feels all that exciting. About 50 minutes in, when our two leads head into a cemetery, things get a bit more fun. A couple more zombies rise up and give a little "life" to the movie. We get some blood and gore and what feels like the first actual threat to our characters. Granted it's not much of a threat, but it's some decently strong Seemingly unkillable undead spooky people. That is a threat.
I like the small town zombie movie idea. They made it work well as a small town problem and I prefer small town horror. Zombies usually feel like a worldwide issue and often are most dangerous in a horde. Here, the zombies can't be easily killed off and they're super strong, so one or two is pretty slow but overall pretty dangerous.
The last half hour does most of the work. It's pretty fun, gory and it's got some spooky atmosphere going for it.
Is this one of the best zombie movies? It's no better than any of the other zombie flicks of this era. Pretty average honestly. A little more could have been done with it's plot of having a strange radiation machine causing zombies. At one point they introduce that the machine is causing babies to be born more aggressive and I was hoping that something was gonna come from that, but nothing really did.
It was fine.
