"Hilarie Sidney and Per Ole Bratset of The High Water Marks and of 6612 Tapes decided to put together a compilation cassette to help raise funds for Justice Democrats." Their webpage states that the Justice Democrat’s mission: “We need a Democratic Party that fights for its voters, not big corporate donors."

So begins the write-up on the 6612 Tapes (Møre og Romsdal, Norway) page announcing the pre-sale of this amazing release. Of course The High Water Marks are here but so are Mikal Cronin, Rose Melburg, Honey Radar, Dressy Bessy, Elf Power and The Ladybug Transistor. And there are enough bands I've never heard of to make this an incredibly well-rounded compilation.

And you get great artwork from Per Ole Bratset. Really, he has some of the coolest art - reminds me of Hamish Kilgour or David Mitchell.

Is there a new Sloppy Heads record out? Yes, there is a new Sloppy Heads record out! Sometimes Just One Second just dropped on the Shrimper label and — dare I say it — it's the best Heads yet! Ariella Stok, Bill the Drummer, and Jimmy Jumpjump (AKA your friend and mine Jesse Jarnow) have crafted a sprawling masterpiece this time around: 75 minutes of sweet jams, fuzzed-out pop, cracked balladry and even a delicious Dead boogie.

Extra props to Yo La Tengo's James McNew, Ladybug Transistor's Gary Olson, Pee Wee's Playhouse artist Gary Panter and legendary animator Al Jarnow for making this a truly special collection. For a little more detail, check out this recent Jarnow + Jarnow Q&A on Aquarium Drunkard.

Someone of Matthew Edwards musical pedigree was bound to come across my radar at some point - I just thought it would have been long before now.

Edwards is English, but currently lives in San Francisco. But I don't think he's part of the current SF/Oakland scene. His music is a bit more produced and literate. It's satisfying my need for music like that of Maxwell Farrington/Le SuperHomard, The Divine Comedy, David Bowie, and David E. Williams.

The Futurists are Edwards' San Francisco based band. He did record a "recent" LP in his hometown of Birmingham, England with a group he called The Unfortunates. He also was in The Music Lovers who put out music on Le Grand Magistery (known to me because of Momus and Louis Philippe). He has collaborated with Fred Frith, and members from Ladybug Transistor and The Essex Green.

This two-song 7" appears to be self-released.

Vintage Novelty Retro Ladybird Ladybug Portable Pocket Radio 1970s Working AM/MW

The vintage Ladybug Novelty Transistor Radio (model LT303) was made in Hong Kong circa 1976 - AM band, wings extend when the volume knob is turned up. This radio was sold under multiple brand names including Amico, Sonnet and Stewart, but all have the same model number (LT303).

i'm (hopefully) at home recovering from a minor heart procedure earlier this week but there's a new show set to air on wlur at 8pm tonight with two hours of (mostly broken) heart related songs. last week's show is also streaming on mixcloud and will air at 10pm tonight after the new show.

Sea Dramas- Escape Scenes (Royal Oakie Records)

Wow, I’m not sure how this band escaped me for so long, but they did. Thanks to the detective work of one Bradley Skaught (of the very fine Bay Area combo Bye Bye Blackbirds) who pointed me in the direction of this superb, lovely record.

It’s basically the work of one Scott Pettersen, who apparently had started the band as a solo project and it then grew into a real band. Only when COVID hit with lockdown, Pettersen retreated back to the solace of his studio and recorded this gem. He got some help from a few friends, but most of this is all him.

It’s a dreamy, exquisite pop record with lilting keyboards, lightly tussled guitars, and Pettersen’s soaring vocals.

The record has a bit of a concept as most of the songs reflect on the passing of time. A few song titles include:  “Daybreak,” “These Days,” “Moon Breaks,” “Sundown,” etc.  It’s hard to believe a record this good is so low on the radar as this band needs to be discovered like now.

If bands like Ladybug Transistor or The Left Bank (or even the Cocteau Twins on the dreamier parts) float your boat, then you’ll be more than ok with Escape Scenes.

Plates of Cake - Got A Feeling That I Live Here

This is apparently the final Plates of Cake album — but if that's true, the Brooklyn-based band is going out with a bang. Got A Feeling That I Live Here is maybe their best effort yet, packed with early Big Star jangle 'n' chime, Some Girls swagger and ramshackle Crooked Raininess. Recorded by Ladybug Transistor main-man Gary Olson, every song here is a gem, highlighting the Plates' very tasty interplay and sweet songwriting. The quartet sounds very comfortable with one another, but they're still pushing ahead. I love the way that the almost eight-minute "Nickel" is bookended by soaring jams, climbing into the clouds. A perfect start to your Bandcamp Monday.
