The International 2023 Dota 2: Đại Hội Esports Lớn Nhất Đang Diễn Ra
Cuộc Hành Trình Đến The International 2023

favorite The International tournament?
Would have to be a tossup between TI5 and TI6
TI5 in 2015 was special to me since I had friends stay overnight to watch the finals (which was 3 AM Philippine time), a feat given we were adults in our 20s and I don't live in Metro Manila. The meltdown of the most dominant team in the history of Dota 2 (until 2023 anyway), Team Secret, was also so shocking it would probably be remembered as the biggest upset in TI history were it not for TI6.
But TI6. Oh man I loved TI6. OG, the winner of all 3 Majors leading up to TI, getting surprise swept by MVP Phoenix (a Korean team, but in Dota, Korea was part of the SEA server) and then getting DESTROYED in the lower bracket by TNC, a Filipino team of talented then-nobodies, was so insane I watched my Twitter timeline all simultaneously go "holy shit" and the host toss away all his papers right on camera.
That changed everything. Apart from Mineski's showing at TI1 (where they won 1 game), Filipino teams had no international relevance whatsoever. They struggled to even qualify for tournaments outside their region, and when they did they lost all their games. TNC making it to the top 8 at TI6 by taking down the kings led to a revival of the local scene. The local competition got fiercer, new blood came in to replace the same old washed up names, and Filipino names actually regularly show up in tournaments even until now (with some of our best then getting poached by NA/EU tier 2 teams lmao)
Third place would be TI10, because Team Spirit was just so exciting to watch. Their drafts were ultra aggressive, tightly executed, and singlehandedly defined the meta for months afterward. Nobody gave a fuck about Magnus as a Pos 3 until Collapse terrorized the otherwise invincible LGD with him. My favorite TI champs to date.

Fictober 2023 Day Two
Prompt number: Two
Fanfiction Fandom: DotA 2 (fan characters but references to canon characters and lore locations)
Rating: T
Warnings: Mentions of alcoholism and ableism.
Flint loathed Winter. First of all: it was freezing. Second of all: his cane was build for trailing over the ground and being able to clearly tell him what type of road he was walking on, not brushing snow out of the way. Snow is the exact same texture no matter where you are, and when it's not snow it's ice. Bloody ice!
As if the universe was reading his mind, his feet slid out from under him as he missed yet another curb thanks to the lovely snow not giving him any indicator of where his footing was. His voice broke in a yelp and something grabbed his arm and hoisted him up.
“Don't worry, I got you.”
His sister's voice. Admittedly, it was a blessing in disguise that he was stuck keeping an eye on her once again. Her constant staring at the ground meant she knew exactly where they were walking and so she functioned as a nice pair of eyes – albeit fragile eyes. If it were any other season he would have argued up and down and back and forth and to high hells and heavens with their mother to just let him see his friends or really do anything without her.
Mom, of course I love her, but she's a fucking handful and you know it!
Mireska would've agreed with him, but this evening she was passed out drunk as per usual. Hence the siblings' trek to the local butcher. With one mother hard at work to provide bare minimum coin for necessities and the other out for the count since alcohol is cheaper in the afternoons, Flint had to rely on the meagre scraps he earned from running chores for locals and criminals alike to pay for a half decent dinner. He stifled a hiss. His friends got to spend their coin on fun stuff, he had to pay a quarter of their rent.
“Butcher,” Ash's croaky voice broke him out of his internal tantrum.
“What d'you want?” He asked her, hearing the shuffle of her coat in response. Rolling his eyes, he tried to keep his voice steady.
“Is that a shrug or?”
“Usual,” she said.
“Right.”
'Usual' translated to a type of steak imported from Cobalt – one cut from the hide of massive mammoths that make their home in the Frozen Wastes bordering the town. The northern folk must lead far more interesting lives out there versus the poor sods stuck in White Spire of all places. The city was seen as a marvel, the place where you could get rich or lose all your coin in one evening. A city where the alcohol never stops and violence rules the cobbled streets. A criminal's free for all, but also the one city with rather afforable housing. The Underlords could be very generous to anyone who sucked up to them enough.
At least that's what Mireska always told him, although she had a nasty habit of sugar coating everything she said. Typical Faerie.
But for Fint – and by extension his sister – it was just home. A home that got tiring after your first four treks to the shop on your own when you're eight years old because the mother that's supposed to be taking care of you decided getting completely plastered and gambling away half the family's savings was more important. No, to Flint White Spire was just a reflection of frustrations that had been growing since he was old enough to understand what his parents fought about every weekend. While the rest of the world longs to come here to paradise, he longed to leave. No doubt Ash felt the same, what with the way she longingly rambled about the history of different cities and how people lived their lives there.
The meat was heavy in the bag, and the siblings took it in turns dragging it through the dark streets. To his side he could hear his sister beginning to hum – not to a tune, which was a terrible sign.
“What's up with you?” He asked.
“People are looking,” came the response.
Flint grit his teeth, fangs grinding against his lower jaw. Ash had a way of unintentionally drawing attention to herself, which distressed her immensely. It was a vicious cycle, but it wasn't her fault. He understood it in a way, feeling his own skin prickle as he could practically feel people's pitying of him when he'd walk by on his own. The way tutors awkwardly spoke to him in his school. Even his mentor, who refused to allow him to touch any of the carpentry tools until Flint dragged in a chair he had made himself.
“Is there an alleyway we can turn down?” He asked. The response was two taps on his shoulder.
“Okay,” he said. “If you wanna lead the way, just hold onto me.”
Ash turned him down a side street and he could feel the air growing colder from unlit alleys. Knowledge of White Spire warned him to stay alert, but he trusted Ash's unmatched homing instinct. Putting a hand on his sister's shoulder, he allowed himself to attempt a comforting smile.
“Don't worry,” he said. “I got you.”

Week 10 | Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
Hello humans! How many of you game here? Personally I love gaming. Not for the act of playing a game. But rather, the time spent with friends. thinking about how to beat a level, complete the game, or even get a win in Dota 2 .-.
ANYWAY, please do tell me what your favorite games are! I might get into the game as well, and maybe we could play together :))
Now on to the topic at hand.
Gaming is often misunderstood as a childish thing to do, a waste of time! But gaming is really about connecting with people from all over the world who share your passion. Whether you’re teaming up to beat the other team or just chilling in a private lobby doing stupid stuff, gaming communities are where real friendships are born.
Tumblr media
When you hop online to play, I bet you immediately check to see if your friends are online. If you do, your'e like me! Because like I said, gaming is waayyy better with friends. Gaming brings people together, making every victory together all the more joyous and every loss easier to deal with (mentally). Games like "Counter Strike 2" and "Dota 2" are perfect examples of games that are great fun for a group of 5. You can do dumb stuff and have a ton of fun! A lot of gamers also stream their gameplay live on streaming platforms like Twitch and Youtube Gaming, both these platforms have become the most popular live streaming site for games and has turned gaming into a sort of spectator sport. Not everyone watches live streams for the games but sometimes the streamers. Popular streamers have unique personalities that attract thousands of viewers. These viewers and the streamers form into a community of people that enjoy the same things. What really propels the feeling of a community is the live chats, where viewers interact in real time with the streamer and each other.
Now a days, gaming as a career can earn you a fortune (if you are really good that is). Esports is a prime example, generating $1.72 billion in 2023. Top tournaments like Dota 2's "The International" had prize pool of about $18 million in 2022, and a HUGE $40 million in 2021. Streamers like XQC and Shroud turned their love for gaming into careers, earning through multiple revenue streams. In Malaysia, Cheng “NothingToSay” Jin Xiang stands out as a professional Dota 2 player. Known for his exceptional skills and strategic gameplay, NothingToSay has made a significant impact in the esports scene, showcasing his talents in international tournaments and becoming a prominent figure in the Dota 2 community. He and his team even got second place in the 2022 Internationals. Bro came home that year and immediately bought himself a Lamborghini.
Tumblr media
If you have a deeper passion for games, developing games is another career in gaming. Developing games involves coding, designing, and storytelling. The growth of the gaming industry has provided more job opportunities for passionate gamers and game developers.
So if someone tells you that gaming is childish, ignore them. Some of us want to feel like a child again.
Stay young, game like a child.

Week 10: Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
Tumblr media
Hey gamers! Ever wondered why gaming feels like more than just a hobby? Let’s dive into the magic of gaming communities, social gaming, and live streaming! Gaming isn’t just about beating the final boss or collecting all the loot; it’s about connecting with people from all over the world who share your passion. Whether you’re teaming up for an epic raid or just hanging out in a virtual lobby, gaming communities are where real friendships are born. Think about the last time you logged into your favorite game. Did you immediately jump into a solo mission, or did you check if your friends were online? If you’re like me, you probably went for the latter. That’s because gaming is way more fun when you’re sharing the experience. Social gaming brings people together, making every victory sweeter and every defeat a bit easier to swallow. And then there's live streaming. Platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming have turned gaming into a spectator sport, where anyone can be a star. Twitch is a popular live streaming platform that attracts a large number of users who enjoy watching live streams or pre-recorded video gameplay. There are also other channels that users can watch, such as music, sports, esports, and food. YouTube Gaming is a video site for gamers that competes with Twitch. Instead of going to Twitch, gamers now go to YouTube. It has live chat and lets users watch live and on-demand video game material.
Whether you’re watching for the sick plays or the hilarious commentary, live streams offer a sense of community. It’s like hanging out with friends, even if you’re not the one holding the controller. Plus, the live chat feature lets you interact in real time, making you feel like part of the action. There are numerous game-specific chat rooms and various ways to connect with people online through consoles and other internet platforms. In addition to the thriving online communities found on platforms like Reddit, each gaming platform offers unique methods for users to connect and communicate. (Social gaming and live streaming apps guide | Internet Matters n.d). However, 41% of parents report that their children chat or communicate with other gamers on streaming services like Twitch and YouTube Gaming and 64% of parents believe that online gaming poses the same risks to their child as using social media (Social gaming and live streaming apps guide | Internet Matters n.d).
Besides, gaming can be a career. A very famous form of professional gaming is called "Esports." By 2023, it is expected to generate a staggering $1.5 billion. Due to this, there is a significant amount of opportunity for dedicated professional gamers. Professional gaming does not require any specific educational qualifications or credentials. Currently, the focus is primarily on developing skills (Is gaming a career? 2023). Many individuals choose to pursue gaming as a career by becoming streamers on popular platforms like Youtube and Twitch. Game streamers may not be professional gamers, but they attract a significant following of viewers who enjoy watching them play games. They generate income through their viewership and by collaborating with different companies and products. For instance, top eSports tournaments like The International for Dota 2 or the League of Legends World Championship offer multi-million dollar prize pools. Streamers like Ninja and Pokimane have turned their gaming prowess into lucrative careers, earning through multiple revenue streams. This shift is supported by a growing industry infrastructure, with teams, coaches, and sponsors, making gaming a serious profession.
Tumblr media
In Malaysia, one of the standout gaming personalities is Khalish "d4v41" Rusyaidee. Known for his impressive skills and strategic gameplay, d4v41 has become a prominent figure in the Malaysian eSports scene, particularly in games like  Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO). But now he is currently in a team called Papper Rex. He , which won US$120,000 (RM534,660) for securing second place at the Valorant Masters esports event in Copenhagen, Denmark (Yeoh 2022).
Game development is another exciting career avenue. Whether you're into coding, design, or storytelling, there’s a place for you in creating the next big game. The gaming industry’s growth means more jobs and opportunities for those passionate about making games. So next time someone tells you gaming is a waste of time, just smile and know you’re part of something much bigger. Keep playing, keep connecting, and keep being awesome! Ciao.

WEEK 9: GAMING COMMUNITIES, SOCIAL GAMING AND LIVE STREAMING
History of Gaming
Tumblr media
Before the era of gaming on various platforms such as mobile phones, PCs, or consoles with high quality in both gameplay and plot. Gaming in the present is no longer just entertainment, gaming now focuses on delivering a message. But back in the day when gaming was still primitive, the first game created was between the 1950s and 1960s, a game called Spacewar! was created with simple visuals and tasks where 2 players will fight each other on a 2D space battlefield. Since then, the game industry developed rapidly, and soon the emergence of arcade games was born, games at that time have developed the categories of genres from player versus player (PvP) and adventure games. Then, in 1972, the first game console was brought to life named Odyssey. But since the rise of gaming companies like Nintendo in Japan, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and Sony’s PlayStation 3, with up-to-date quality, 3D has been a banger among the gaming communities creating a foundation for the development of nowadays online games and many gamin companies.
Tumblr media
The Gaming Culture
Tumblr media
The rapid growth of gaming has come with the formation of the culture of gaming, at first it was just a hobby but up till now, gaming has become an integral aspect of mainstream culture (Santillan, 2023). The stereotypes of gaming were acknowledged as young people, white or East-Asian, and predominantly males. In 2023, there are approximately 212 million gamers in the United States, with 53% percent of them are male gamers (Clement, 2024). This male dominance figure brought some negative effects on sexism and discrimination among female gamers. On the other hand, male gamers have become the main figure of a stereotypical perception of gamers. They are described as lazy, nerdy, socially disconnected, and have no future in education and occupations. Still, gamers are still welcomed by the gamer's communities as they share the same hobby and passion.
Gaming Communities
Tumblr media
More and more people now playing games, and they all have a tendency to find a community where they are welcome to play games together. This kind of community helps gamers to build social connections. They can be connected to each other both physically and digitally, since the old arcade places to online meetings through platforms like Discords, and Reddit,... Gaming communities when they reach a large number of followers, they can hold events and make gaming more professional. There are plenty of competitions on the international scale through many online games like Dota 2, Leagues of Legends, and FC Online,... and they allow gamers to become new professionals with competitions with valuable prizes, such as Dota 2 which e-Sport tournaments amounted 300 million dollars (Gough, 2024) or the 2021 League of Legends World Championship that attracts 2,232,979 viewers at the same time (Sandoval, 2021). Furthermore, gaming communities also make great contributions to society through charity, which is changing gamer's stereotypes.
Live-streaming in gaming culture Live streaming is an advanced feature due to the development of gaming. Gamers not only pay attention to playing games, but they will also share their gaming and gain engagement from the audience. Live-streaming is an ideal environment for professional gamers to build a fan base and their communities and earn monthly from streaming platforms. For example, gamer/streamer Tabi Tuan Anh of FC Online, he was able to earn an average of 300 million dongs per month through live-streaming and attending FC Online tournaments with his team SevenTV as he shared in a podcast. Having his finances stable, Tabi Tuan Anh contributed to society when he donated money to build classrooms for poor children in Vietnam's remote areas.

[W9] Exploring gaming communities: E-sport!
Gaming communities as Social Communities
Gaming communities often serve as social communities where players gather, interact, and form connections based on shared interests and experiences. These communities can be seen as assemblages of smaller groups or sub-communities, with players flowing between them based on their preferences, gaming interests, and social dynamics. According to Lufkin (2020):
"Gamers have known for a long time something that everyone else is starting to figure out: there’s community connection on the other side of a screen."
One of the key factors that unite members of gaming communities is skill, expertise, and knowledge in a particular game or genre. Players with similar levels of proficiency often gravitate towards each other, forming sub-communities within larger gaming ecosystems. These sub-communities may focus on specific aspects of the game, such as strategy, tactics, mechanics, or particular playstyles (Magdaleno , 2023).
Tumblr media
Additionally, gaming communities often feature platforms for communication and collaboration, such as forums, Discord servers, social media groups, and streaming channels, where players can engage in discussions, share content, and coordinate gameplay sessions. These platforms facilitate the exchange of ideas, the formation of friendships, and the cultivation of a sense of community among players with similar interests and passions.
E-Sport: an ever growing phenomenon!
The term “e-sports” or “electronic sports” dates back to the late nineties (Bornemark, 2013), refers to competitive video gaming at a professional level. E-sports has grown significantly over the years, evolving from small gatherings of gamers to massive events that fill stadiums and attract millions of viewers online. The gaming community surrounding esports is diverse and passionate, comprising players, teams, coaches, commentators, analysts, organizers, sponsors, and fans. These individuals come together to compete, spectate, and support their favorite teams and players across various games and genres, including popular titles like League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, Overwatch, Fortnite, and many others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Esports tournaments and leagues are organized on both a regional and international scale, offering substantial prize pools, lucrative sponsorship deals, and opportunities for professional gamers to showcase their skills on a global stage. Major esports events, such as The International for Dota 2 or the League of Legends (LOL) World Championship, often attract millions of viewers and generate significant revenue through advertising, ticket sales, merchandise, and media rights. For example, there are more than 6.4 million viewers tuned from around the globe to watch T1 beat Weibo Gaming at LOL World Championship 2023 (Hitt, 2023). And Shikenso Analytics, an esports data and analytics company, has reported that the event had a media value of more than $143.24 million. The esports community is known for its inclusivity, with players from diverse backgrounds and regions coming together to compete. Additionally, esports has become a significant cultural phenomenon, influencing various industries beyond gaming, including fashion, music, and entertainment.
Tumblr media
Overall, the esports community continues to thrive and evolve, driven by the passion and dedication of its members and the growing popularity of competitive gaming worldwide.

The International 2024

Intel’s Upgrade for Better DirectX 11 Experience
Tumblr media
Since its introduction roughly a year ago, Intel Arc Alchemist GPUs have become competitive graphics cards. Both excellent and bad drivers have been a recurring topic with Arc, but Intel has made progress to make things better and close the performance difference. To that purpose, Intel has made new drivers available that are designed to boost DirectX 11 performance.
The advantages are currently restricted to particular titles, according to Intel, who we spoke with earlier this week. To give some context, Intel discovered that several of the base driver components for its discrete and integrated GPUs were not optimum for Arc after the first launch of the technology. You can very much always assume that the GPU is the bottleneck when using integrated graphics. Anything that could be done to reroute work to the CPU in order to clear the backlog was considered a “good thing.” Of course, when the GPU becomes 10 times faster, as in the case of the Arc A770, the same rationale doesn’t necessarily apply any longer.
Therefore, Intel has put a lot of time and effort into updating the drivers since the product’s launch. This first became apparent in early 2023, when Intel boasted improvements in DirectX 9 performance. Microsoft’s DX9 on DX12 tools were used in the original Arc drivers to enable compatibility and get things up and running. But there was still a lot more performance left to be had. The Intel driver team reportedly worked with the open source DirectX on Vulkan project to further optimize the various components, something it was unable to achieve using the closed-source Microsoft tool. Things eventually got to the point where the new DXVK-optimized approach was being used for all (or most?) DX9 support.
Now, DirectX 11 games are receiving a similar treatment. However, Intel has tried to provide a unique code route for DX11 compatibility into its drivers, not in the same way as DXVK. The emphasis has been on evaluating particular games and then “whitelisting” them in the drivers to use the new code path because the existing DX11 support already functions, even though performance isn’t optimal. Apex Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Destiny 2, DOTA 2, Genshin Impact, GTA Online / GTA V, League of Legends, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Overwatch 2, and Valorant are among the 10 well-known DX11 titles that Intel now supports.
The most recent drivers essentially improve how the graphics hardware communicates with the DX11 API. Intel enhanced overall performance on DirectX 11 games by fine-tuning a number of factors and developing more effective rendering algorithms (it didn’t go into any low-level details). Here are the findings from its internal performance testing, which contrasts the most recent drivers (internal versions 4571 and 4642, albeit version 4644 drivers have since been released) with the first launch drivers (3490).
The new DX11 code route improved performance across all ten games (eleven if you add GTA Online and GTA V as distinct entries) by somewhere between 5% and 33%. The fact that Intel deliberately aimed the driver optimizations at “mainstream” CPUs — it tested with a Core i5-13400F and an Arc A750 — is what makes this development particularly intriguing.
The advantages on a top-end Core i9-13900K weren’t as noticeable, Intel states in later slides. When compared to the Core i5 CPU, performance improved by only 0% to 28% across the games that were chosen, with an overall average improvement of 12%.
This makes a lot of sense for future Arc A750 buyers, therefore we commend Intel for their testing and efforts in this area. Arc A750 cards are currently starting at $199, making them a fantastic value with performance that is comparable to the RTX 3060 and RX 6700 10GB. While supplies last on the 3060, both of those continue to sell for around $270, so the A750 offers excellent value. While we may base all of our testing on the Core i9-13900K CPU to minimize other bottlenecks, customers constructing a PC with an A750 are unlikely to spend much more than $200 for the CPU, which is where the i5-13400F sits.
Other intriguing news and bullet points from Intel were available for discussion. The most significant is an update to PresentMon, which serves as the basis for Nvidia FrameView, AMD OCAT, and CapFrameX. For the purpose of collecting frametimes and other metrics pertaining to graphics performance, Intel developed PresentMon as an open-source performance monitoring tool. Over the years, it has undergone numerous improvements, and now Intel is joining AMD and Nvidia in providing a more durable alternative.
With the addition of a GUI, the new PresentMon beta is far more user-friendly than the previous iteration. A variety of new features, including a strong overlay, histograms, and others, have also been added by Intel. A new “GPU Busy” measure is also available, which displays how much time was spent waiting on the GPU as opposed to the rest of the system. The new drivers’ main goal has been to minimize this discrepancy.
Future drivers will include the additional titles that Intel is still evaluating with the new DX11 code path. The new code may eventually be deemed reliable enough that Intel will simply flick a switch to force all games to use it; alternatively, there may be a blacklist where games with known bugs can remain on the older code.
