Kapil Sharma said he turned down nine film offers
Tumblr media
Kapil Sharma Film Zwigato: Kapil Sharma is called the king of the comedy world. Entering the comedy world in 2007, Kapil first appeared on stage in 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge' in stand-up comedy. The situation today is that Kapil Sharma's name is accepted as king in the world of comedy. Kapil Sharma's Comedy Nights With Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show are both domestic as well as international. Kapil's popularity is currently skyrocketing. Kapil Sharma is a hit in movies with comedies. Apart from the world of comedy, Kapil Sharma also debuted in films. Capil's 2015 film someone to love It was released and was loved by fans. Since 2017 Kapil Sharma's film Foreign came, but this film could not show anything special. In such a situation, Kapil Sharma returns to the screen once again after 6 years. Next up for actress and filmmaker Nandita Das Zbigato Kapil will play the lead role. Please tell me that in this movie Shahana Goswami will play the role of his wife along with Kapil Sharma. While Capil plays the role of a deliveryman for a middle-class family in the film, the released posters and trailers amplified the excitement of fans. Fans want to see Kapil's next movie. Please tell me this movie will be released in theaters on March 17th. Received 9 film offers after Zwigato In a recent interview with Media Channel, Kapil Sharma said that after the trailer for the film Zwigato was released, he received nine film offers. All of these movies were serious John movies. But in talking to the writer of those films, I realized that he wasn't serious about his work. Kapil did not reveal during this time whether or not he would do this film. But when asked what prevents Kapil Sharma from doing more Hindi films? In response, Kapil Sharma said:- Thank God I can do a good job and make a lot of money staying in my comfort zone, but if I have to get out and work in the hot sun, a script if necessary should be good... Kapil said - I only want to do movies that touch my heart. This is a priority for me and I will always stay ahead. I don't want to do movies to make money. earned enough Kapil Sharma started laughing when he said that I am very rich. ALSO READ- Pavitra Punia is secretly married to her 11-year-old boyfriend! The subject of new girl is about a girl, Jessica Day moving into a L.A loft with three men. Nick Miller a Caucasian man, Winston Schmidt who is Jewish, and Winston Bishop an African American.
The show is primarily about their lives living together and forming relationships throughout the four main characters lives. I chose this show because throughout the seasons they have a vast amount of characters with different backgrounds and they all get along great. A relationship between Schmidt and an Indian woman forms at one point and Winston Bishop eventually forms a relationship with a white woman. This show feels very real and I truly enjoy watching their encounters because I feel as if they do happen in real life! I believe this show relates to our course topics and readings because the characters in this show are not all the same nationality or ethnicity, they have grown up with completely differing childhoods and they eventually all come together and show their extremely close friendships. Schmidt’s childhood was extremely cultural, and his mother still highly values their Jewish background which is shown in a number of episodes. Cece, the Indian women who becomes a main character develops a relationship with Schmidt that eventually becomes complicated because of their differing ethnicities. Cece’s mother requires her to marry an Indian man and numerous episodes show Cece going on dates with Indian men and even going to a strictly Indian speed dating event. New Girl generates the conversation involving race, ethnicity, and cultural diversity because all of these characters realize they cannot live without each other. Their backgrounds do not affect their friendships and they call themselves a family. In the YouTube video below it shows Schmidt showing up to the Indian dating event to watch Cece interact with different men. Being so madly in love with Cece he does not allow his Jewish background to destroy their connection.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uyEON6Xm0I
(Spoiler Alert!)
In the image attached  it shows the Jewish and Hindu wedding ceremony of Schmidt and Cece. Through many seasons of disapproval, judgement, and hardship the couple decides that they are in control of their lives and they do not want to let that ruin what they have.
I love this picture as well as the episode because they both wanted to incorporate their cultures and they succeeded. Schmidt cared about Cece’s culture enough to integrate it into his Jewish culture. They both respected each other’s backgrounds and knew that getting married would be a challenge, but they never let that stop them! I absolutely love them together and if you end up watching this show you will cry from laughter and see the “true love” the characters form with their partners! There are far more examples of cultural diversity in this show and this article written by Devika Syal does the best job giving you the full inside scoop. The first time I wanted each of the seasons I did not realize how many different characters with differing backgrounds were in the show. This was simply because it was so casual and all the characters looked at each other as human beings, not nationalities, races, or ethnicities and that is why I love it so much. This article is totally worth the read!
Syal, D. (2017, April). Why 'New Girl' is the Show You Need to be Watching. Retrieved July 10, 2020, from https://www.hercampus.com/school/emerson/why-new-girl-show-you-need-be-watching
Continuing..: Within the series of new girl, the group of friends do not judge each other based on their color or ethnicity. They appreciate and accept all of their differences and it only makes them closer. In specific relation to our course this makes me think back to the first week from the article, "Black? White? Asian? More Young Americans Choose all of the Above" In this article the group of friends celebrate their unique differences and it only builds on from there. The article mentioned that one in seven marriages involves different races/ethnitices. This made me immediately think of Schmidt and Cece! It moves on to mention that this will continue and accelerate. I believe the show wanted people to see that it really is quite common! A student in the article mentioned how important it is to acknowledge who you truly are. In New Girl every main character does this. Cece acknowledges and speaks highly of her culture and so does Schmidt with his Jewish childhood. Winston I not afraid for the friend group to meet his African-American family and is proud of where he came from. This article was perfect in relation to new girl!

54th Engineer’s Day - Engineers for Skill Development amid COVID
( *By Nagesh Chandra Mishra )
Today is 54th Engineer’s Day in India, being celebrated every year on 15th September to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visveswaraya ( 1860-1962 ) .
1. The theme of Engineer’s day in India, this year, in
2021 is “ Engineers For SKILL DEVELOPMENT & Employment to Combating COVID “ .
The key words of the above theme are : Engineers ; Skill Development; Employment; & Combating COVID .
Here , I am reminded of the following words of Alvin Toffler ,
“ One of the most highly developed SKILLS in contemporary Western Civilisation is DISSECTION: the split-up of problems into the smallest components. We are good at it .So good we often FORGET TO PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER AGAIN.
This SKILL is perhaps finely honed in science. There we not only ROUTINELY BREAK PROBLEMS down into bite-sized chunks and mini chunks , we then very often ISOLATE each one from its environment by means of a useful pick . We say “ CITERIS PARIBUS “ - all other things being equal. In this we can ignore the complex interaction between our problems & the rest of the universe. “
[ Alvin Toffler in Opening Remarks of the Book , ‘ORDER OUT OF CHAOS ‘ By Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine & Stengers ]
When the august body of Institution of Engineers ( India ) have set the question paper to write , say , an essay on ‘VARSHA WRITU’ , I must stick to the topic ...rather than deviating to write an essay whimsically on ‘VASANT WRITU’ endangering myself to attract negative marking ( at 75th year of my age resonating with Amrit Mahotsav of India’s Independence, I am no longer an evergreen brilliant student as Rajendra Prasad to be honoured with decorated remarks, ‘examinee is better than the examiner’ on my answer sheet ! )
Seeking an unqualified apology from the Council of Management, Institution Of Engineers (India ) , it’s my earnest request to them to relook at the rationale behind selecting the theme every year in an ad hoc manner . Perhaps, they are still guided by the legacy of Lord Chelmsford who inaugurated IEI in 1920 rather than to be inspired by ‘father of our engineering fraternity’ , Sir M. Visveswaraya who provided us an appropriate compass suited to India’s needs through his magnum opus ‘RECONSTRUCTING INDIA’ ( published around the same time line , 1920 ) . Here are some instances of the past themes of IEI on which we deliberated during past years after years. Such practices may fulfil our routine duties merely as event managers rather than serving any meaningful Engineering purpose barring some exceptions.
Yes, Music & Dances , Cultural Programs , Good Food & Laughter with Exchanging pleasantries on Engineer’s Day Celebration MUST BE essential for recharging our body , mind & soul . Looking back on Themes in
2020 was “Engineers For Self-reliant India” ;
2019 was “Engineering For Change” ;
2018 was “The Challenges of Engineering in the Age of Knowledge” ;
2017 was “The role of engineers in an emerging India” ;
2016 was “Developing the Qualification of Young Engineers to Reform the Main Sector: Vision 2025”;
2015 was “The challenges of engineering in the era of knowledge” ;
2014 was “Making the world-class Indian genius” ;
2013 was “Frugal Engineering – Reaching More with Less Resources” ;
2012 focused on technical preparedness for disaster mitigation ;
2011 was “Engineering Preparation for Disaster Mitigation” ;
2010 was “Future Paradigm Shift in Engineering and Challenges Ahead” ;
2009 was “Green is the theme of this year” ;
...............................so on & so forth ........dating back from 1967 since the year Engineer’s Day Celebration was begun.
I don’t know about the outcome, recommendations of deliberations at hundreds of local Centres sent to Headquarters & to various Govts in Power for taking subsequent actions by them to enhance the serious concerns of Engineering Fraternity.
1. Reverting back to the theme of 2021 , let’s know the origin of the word , ‘ENGINEER’ & ‘SKILL’ . These two words are complementary to each other. What is an Engineer ? Let’s ask ourselves with the true spirit of the following lines of Mirza Ghalib :
har ek baat pe kahte ho tum ki tū kyā hai tumhīñ kaho ki ye andāz-e-guftugū kyā hai
( “ हर एक बात पे कहते हो तुम कक तू क्या है
तुम्ह ीं कहो कक ये अींदाज़-ए-गुफ़्तुगू क्या है“ )
And ...then... by Invoking Sir M. Visveswaraya , his spirit would instantly guide ...echoing through the next lines of Mirza Ghalib :
ragoñ meñ dauḌte phirne ke ham nahīñ qaa.il jab aañkh hī se na Tapkā to phir lahū kyā hai
“ रगोींमें दौड़ते किरने के हम नहहींकायल
जब आँख हह से न टपका तो किर लहू क्या है “
Sir MV’s brilliance was unexceptional - limited not only to ‘technical’ competence of an ‘engineer’ - as being perceived by today’s generation of politicians, administrators , common man & other professionals . Sir MV was a divine towering personality possessing the finest quality of a Statesman, a visionary, an administrator , an economist & a planner who sowed the seed & vision
of Planned Economy that laid the foundation of Planning Commission ( rechristened by Modi Government as NITI AAYOG in1914 ) .
Not only Mahatma Gandhi or Pandit Nehru sought Sir MV’s advice on important occasions..but..royal kings & rulers , great leaders & eminent industrialists , professionals from all walks of life in India & developed nations solicited his invaluable guidance till he was alive .
I am pained to find ...that...our own Engineering Fraternity , by & large , have ‘bonsai’ed their unlimited capabilities reducing themselves to become ‘HMV’s of their mediocre bosses .
Lord Hanuman didn’t realise what wonders he can do till Jamwant awakened him to realise his real divine power .
In the following paragraph, I would try to illustrate the real meaning of the word , “ENGINEER” co-relating with “SKILL” as depicted in scriptures & archeological evidences . May this motivate our all friends.
The word “ENGINEER” has Latin Root. It is derived from the Latin word , INGENIARE ( meaning : to create , generate , contrive , devise ) & INGENIUM ( cleverness) .
GENE : ( to create , to invent , or ..bring forth )
From the Proto - Indo - European ( PIE ) & RIGVEDA scriptures dating back to [ 4500 to 2500 BC ] , the above meaning of INGENIARE holds true.
According to Encyclopaedia Britannica , first recorded “Engineer “ was Imhotep who designed Step Pyramid at Saqqarah , Cairo ( 2750 - 2656 BC )
: erected some time around 2550 BC.
From the findings & records of Indus Valley Civilisation, Bronze Age , South Asia ( 3300 BCE - 1300 BCE ) , we do have evidences of Engineer’s Brilliant inventing capabilities.
[ Source : Wikipedia ]
3) An Engineer , after reassuring oneself with his or her enormous professional capabilities to think , invent & create anything ....must have gained self esteem to exactly know what is meant by SKILL DEVELOPMENT.
From the bookish knowledge of Skill Development ( as brilliantly portrayed in the Hindi Movie, “ 3 IDIOTS “ ,
Skill is the learned ability to perform an action with determined results with good execution often within a given amount of time , energy or both.
These are described as Hard Skills ; Soft Skills ; Life Skills ; People Skills ; Social Skills ; Holistic competencies etc.
Holistic Competence of SKILL DEVELOPMENT is defined in the following Sanskrit Shloka ( Subhashitani ) :
“ अमन्त्रं अक्षरं नास्ति
नास्ति मूलं न औषधम् ।
अयोग्य: पुरूषं नास्ति योजकित्र दुललभम् ।।”
Amantram Aksharam Naasti Naasti Moolam Na Aushadham Ayogyah Purusho Naasti Yojakastatr Durlabham
Meaning thereby :
No Alphabet Is Without some capability to form Mantra ; No Root or Shrub Is Without some medicinal Qualities ; NO PERSON IS INCOMPETENT
RARE IS AN INGENIARE
TO UTILISE EVERY RESOURCE OPTIMALLY.
Amid Covid-19, it’s the rare caliber of Engineers due to which Development Wheel of The Nation is moving against heavy odds .
May it be ONLINE Classes or Offices ; or Power Generation; Essential Services like Water Supply , Health & Hygiene or COVIN App for Vaccinations ; or 2g to 5G Connectivity or any Logistics in Hospitals , Banks or at other places ; Rail , Roads , Air, Transportation; Feeding & distributing Direct Benefit Transfers ( DBT ) to needy bottom billions of our society residing in urban or rural areas , Revenue Collection , Direct Taxes ; GST ; Communication or Employment Generation etc. etc. etc. —— ‘Jahan Dekhiyega Hamen Paaiyega ‘ — Everywhere behind these services, ENGINEERS are serving Aadhars behind every economic activity in the country.
In spite of all that , it’s sad that ....Engineers’ due is yet to be recognised by any Government in Power unless they choose to wear another cap as bureaucrats inducting themselves through Civil Services Examination or fight an election to become MLAs / MPs & Ministers .
In India , generally speaking, a Teacher or a Doctor of excellence has to wear additional cap of some important constitutional post , only then their Birth Anniversary would be celebrated as Teacher’s Day or Doctor’s Day . Perhaps, BharatRatna Sir Mokshgundam Visveswaraya was an exception whose birthday is celebrated as Engineer’s Day .
On this auspicious day , I urge the Political Masters , specially, Hon. Prime Minister of India , to compulsorily include these three books authored by BharatRatna Sir M . Visveswaraya viz. “PLANNED ECONOMY”; “RECONSTRUCTING INDIA” & “MEMOIRS OF MY WORKING LIFE” in the curriculum of all Universities at Graduation levels under New Education Policy ( NEP ) & renaming the NITI AAYOG as VISVESWARAYA AAYOG inducting the Vice Chairperson, Member Secretaries & Members’ Posts from amongst the Brilliant Minds selected from the panels of TOP 10 Ranked Institutions of India for inculcating a fervour of meritorious & Innovative Policy needed for AATMANIRBHAR BHARAT .
Paying my rich tributes to immortal soul of Sir MV on his Birth Anniversary , I greet all Engineer brothers and sisters with the following two lines of Mirza Ghalib...at this end :
“रहह न ताकत-ए-गुफ़्तार और अगर हो भह तो ककस उमहद पे ककहए कक आरज़ू क्या है “

In that sense it is emblematic of Isao Takahata as a film maker. To be honest Takahata deals with a wider range of topics than Hayao Miyazaki, and with.

Overdubbed films have a bad reputation in the English-speaking world, but if done well can be superior to subtitled films, says a former Studio Ghibli producer.

Geoffrey Wexler recently oversaw the English dub of the 2017 Japanese film Mary and The Witch's Flower.
If you want to create a good dub, the biggest challenge isn't matching a new script and vocal track to the characters' mouth movements, but in fact, a 'logistical, boring' problem we all know about – time – he says.

'We pursue very busy actors who are quite in demand so securing their time is very difficult … getting them in the studio behind the mic in the time window we need is, I'd say, the biggest challenge.'

Composing a new script that will match the character's mouth movements takes time, effort and skill, Geoffrey says.
The writing team first record themselves reading the lines deadpan in time with the mouth movements on what is known as a 'scratch track'.
Then the actors come in to do their thing.
Some nail the timing of their line on the first or second try – an occasion for joyous laughter and applause, Geoffrey says.

He was excited to discover Indian-English actor Dev Patel, who voiced Toshio in the dubbed version of the 1991 Studio Ghibli film Only Yesterday, shared a specific vocal skill with the actor who originally played the character, Toshirō Yanagiba.
'(Dev) has that very uncanny ability to laugh into a line yet you can still hear what he's saying.'
Geoffrey concedes that many films overdubbed with a simple and perhaps not very skilled translation aren't great viewing, but says a well-dubbed film is superior to a subtitled film.
Having to watch and read at the same time detracts from the beautifully handpainted, hand-drawn animation in a film like Mary and The Witch's Flower, he says.
'Anyone who really loves these films, it just baffles me why they would spend 30 or 40 percent of their attention reading them.'
A well-dubbed film is neither a translation or a whole new film, but something of its own in between, Geoffrey says.
He encourages people to watch a dubbed version of a non-English animated film first and after that a subtitled version if you want to hear the original actors' performances.

A very brief note on Spiritual practices
11 Nov 2017
With so many vibrational and physical shifts occurring since recent events such as the eclipse, equinox and various energy portals, there is much chaotic yet cathartic energy floating around – especially now as we are currently experiencing the very powerful 11/11 energy gateway opening up.
This portal is signified by the number 11, which is considered to be a master number and one that is highly related to spirituality, awakenings and creating equilibrium from a dualistic mindset. It is very much connected to spiritual growth, illuminated thinking and the raising of awareness in terms of consciousness  – be it individual or collective. This is the energy that reminds us that in order to create harmony, we must eradicate fear and bring more love into the world. The balancing of opposites is key here – for example: love/fear, dark/light, Divine feminine energy/Divine masculine energy. The list goes on. With this bold energy comes a certain type of instability, chaos, second-guessing of oneself, introversion/reflection etc. It varies from individual to individual but there is a common thread.
It’s important to be aware that although catharsis eventually brings with it many benefits and great potential outcomes, it can also often be brutal and take its toll on our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing therefore  – as we transition and integrate new frequencies– it is vital to optimise our energetic balance by implementing greater self care and incorporating a few basic spiritual practices or rituals into our daily routines which enable us to nourish our souls.
Maintaining our health and nurturing ourselves is vital in order to keep living with inner harmony and staying in the flow. There are so many ways in which this can be done, however the choice is entirely up to the individual; rest, relaxation, laughter, healthy eating, exercise, sleep, meditation, Reiki, Qi Gong, balancing chakras, psychic hygiene are all examples of things that can help. There is no one set rule so get creative and formulate a regimen that works for you, and remember that none of these need to be complicated or laborious, they can be brief and simple if you so wish. The important element to consider here is the continuity and intention behind the execution.
Below, I’ve listed a few basic spiritual practices which can be practiced on a daily basis and which will aid your soul growth and personal development as well as maintaining positive, clean energy. These are meant as a guide and they are by no means extensive or in-depth, so please feel free to pick and choose what feels right to you.
 Cleansing:
It is important to ensure that your home/live/work/sleep environment is kept free of stagnant or negative energy. Daily cleansing is highly recommended but you don’t have to be too strict with yourself as you can do this whenever you feel is the right time for you. Here are a few quick and easy ways to help lighten up the energy of your environment:
·       Declutter – remove all items that are no longer of use or purpose: donate them to charity, sell or give them away.
·       Physically clean your space by washing, polishing, dusting, hoovering – whatever removes physical dirt and grime
·       Smudge the space with white sage or Palo Santo. You simply burn the sage/Palo Santo and waft it around the room making sure to get into the corners of the room (where stagnant energy tends to collect). I use a feather to gently guide the smoke into my desired direction. This will transform the energy of your room instantly (remember to keep the windows open so that stagnant energy and the smoke can escape).
·       Recite an incantation, prayer or blessing whereby you are setting and intention to clear the space of any negative energy that is not serving your higher purpose. If you wish, you can set the intention for protection, or give thanks and gratitude, or you can simply state that you are inviting in positive energy for the purpose for your higher good and for those who share your space. Again, you can get quite creative here and follow your gut instinct as to what feels right.
Cleansing your auric field is also important so I find that having regular Epsom salt baths is a great way of removing any unwanted negative energy from yourself. You can also add lavender, rose or rosemary to your bath if you wish to add relaxation and create a more ritual feel.
Create a sacred space:
This can be a quiet space for meditation and reflection, or somewhere where you can come to unwind, relax and recharge. The energy here should be kept clean and harmonious.
Many people often create an altar within their sacred space. How you choose to do this is totally up to you as there is no right or wrong way of doing this. Some people set up their altars to pay homage to deities, elements, planets, gods/goddesses, pretty much anything; it can be as simple as having a few candles on a tray, or a variety of crystals arranged in a grid to encourage and invite various energies to you, you may wish to incorporate artifacts such as feathers, skulls, objects which hold symbolism specifically to you, incense, photos, statues or even hand written intentions. The possibilities are endless.
In my sacred space, I light candles and burn essential oils in a diffuser. I also create crystals grids which change according to what energy I’m wishing to work with at that time. Music and sound/vibration are also very powerful for me so I always play ambient sounds such as Native Indian wood flute, hand pan (space drum), Tibetan gong. I find that this helps to center and ground my energy whilst I’m meditating or performing self-Reiki.
Meditation:
This should be done every day for a minimum of 15 minutes. Practiced every day, you will find over time that you will start hearing your intuition and listening to your inner guidance much more. You will start receiving messages from your guides and you will build mental dexterity and stamina. This is also a powerful way to ground yourself and relax your mind. With time, so many answers will come to you and this will be a key way for you to work through various challenges and core wounds. Within meditation, one can often receive guidance, making this a very useful spiritual tool indeed!
Daily Gratitude:
Every morning and evening list 5 things for which you are grateful. This sets up a positive mindset for your sleep and upon waking.
I’ve only just scratched the surface on what practices there are out there as there are so many others which can be undertaken. I will delve further into this at a  later date within another article so keep your eyes peeled.

New top story from Time: How Cricket Has Become More Than Just a Game For Hong Kong’s Filipina Domestic Helpers
It’s 7:00 a.m. and Cherry Octaviano’s workday is about to begin. There’s breakfast to be made—fruit, juice, sandwiches and eggs—and a round of cleaning to be done before she wakes everyone up. She dusts the study and sweeps the floors before gently getting the household out of bed.
Around the same time, in an apartment elsewhere in the city, Jennifer Alumbro is preparing school lunches before dropping the kids off at the bus stop. On her return, she gives the kitchen a quick wipe down before cleaning the bathroom.
This is what most mornings look like for Octaviano, 35, and Alumbro, 30, both Filipina domestic helpers in Hong Kong. But come Sunday, they turn their attention from spotless dishes and sparkling floors to batting practice and fielding strategies. It’s their weekly day off and they spend it doing something very few Filipinas do: playing cricket.
Alumbro and Octaviano are members of the SCC Divas, a female team made up entirely of migrant domestic helpers from the Philippines. It’s certainly the first such cricket team in Hong Kong. Quite probably, it’s the only one of its kind in the world.
It isn’t unusual that cricket is played in Hong Kong—the former British colony’s connection with the sport goes back to 1841. But it is interesting how the Divas have taken with such devotion to a sport that, until recently, was completely alien to them—and indeed to most people who did not grow up in one of Commonwealth or former Commonwealth countries that are cricket’s heartlands, such as England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, and New Zealand.
Cricket has never caught on in the Philippines, despite first being played in Manila in 1914. Until about 15 years ago, the game was only played socially, and haphazardly, by a smattering of expats from Commonwealth countries. Though there are now structured leagues supported by the Philippine Cricket Association in and around the capital Manila, the sport is still far from popular, especially with the Filipino population.
Not so in Hong Kong, where the Divas are helping cricket spread among the city’s Filipino workers. The game is proving to be a welcome diversion for a hardworking community for whom life is often difficult.
While most families in Hong Kong are law-abiding employers and often form warm relations with their helpers, emotional and sometimes physical abuse are occupational hazards. One of the most shocking instances was the 2013 case of a young Indonesian domestic worker, Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, who was starved and tortured by her employer for months. More common is the kind of pettiness that see’s a helper’s pay docked for transgressions like using a heater.
Working and living conditions can be challenging, too. Since local laws deem that helpers must live with employers, they have little or no privacy and are constantly on-call, working long, tiring days. Given the premium on space in Hong Kong’s overcrowded and exorbitantly priced housing market, many are forced to sleep in substandard conditions when the day’s chores are finally done—making their beds in bathrooms, on balconies, or under racks of drying clothes in corridors.
In these circumstances, cricket is more than just a sport for the helpers. It’s a ready made family and cultivates a sense of pride. “People say we’re just cleaners and nannies,” Alumbro tells TIME. “We are doing our best to change that. We are more than that.”
In their own, small way the Divas are also part of a growing wave of women’s cricket. Women’s games now draw sizeable crowds and television viewers. One estimate suggests that close to 180 million people tuned in to the 2017 Women’s World Cup, with the 26,500 capacity crowd at London’s hallowed Lord’s cricket ground the largest ever for a women’s final.
‘New Sport’
Team captain Josie Arimas was the driving force behind the Divas’ formation in 2017. Arimas, 50, a former softball player in the Philippines, was introduced to cricket in 2015 and spent two years playing with a Hong Kong team before deciding to form her own squad. She received enough interest from fellow Filipinas to go ahead with her plan.
“We’d had enough of playing softball, it was boring. Cricket was a new sport,” Arimas says.
She found an ally in Animesh Kulkarni, an Indian businessman and cricket fanatic, who brought the team under the aegis of his Subcont Cricket Club (SCC) and became its manager.
Kulkarni is one of the many South Asian expats around the world who help cricket grow. His love for the game, what he terms keeda (a colloquial Hindi term for an obsession), has seen him become a mainstay of the Hong Kong cricket scene since he moved to the city in the early 1990s.
“I had a stroke about 15 years ago and couldn’t move my left arm, but it’s that keeda that gave me the willpower to work to raise my hand for the umpire signals,” Kulkarni says.
Despite most of the team having never played cricket before, they quickly found their feet, bringing to cricket skills and athleticism honed in local softball and baseball leagues. Although many softball and baseball fans profess to be baffled by cricket’s rules, the sports have a great deal in common. They are all explosive games, full of tension, in which quiet moments are shattered by sudden bouts of frantic activity. Strategy, nuance and cunning are essential to victory, and an entire day’s play can hang on the subtle turn of a ball.
Tumblr media
Kamakshi Ayyar The SCC Divas in action against a local cricket team at Po Kong Village Road park, Hong Kong, on April 28, 2019
Coach Najeeb Amar, who used to train the Hong Kong women’s team, tells TIME that he just needed to “fine-tune” the existing skills that the Divas had acquired elsewhere and adapt them to a new sport. But he has to work within the challenging schedules of his team, who have only one day off a week, usually a Sunday—and even then, demanding bosses can curtail the day at either end. Some employers insist that their helpers be home be home by a certain time. Others won’t let them out until a couple of chores have been done.
“They have to walk the dog before leaving home,” Octaviano says of some team members who find it tough to show up to 8:00 a.m. training.
The Divas face such circumstances with cheerful resilience. Their games at the Po Kong Village Road cricket ground are part sports fixture, part picnic, with loud conversations and laughter over trays of noodles and coolers filled with drinks. The bonds between them are evidently close. The players call their captain Ate Josie, using the Tagalog term for “older sister.”
The Divas give Alumbro something to look forward to during the domestic drudgery of the working week. “We might be bruised from our games, but on Monday we’re already discussing the next match,” she says, “Each game gives us the motivation to do better next time.”
Such motivation has seen them top Hong Kong’s Development League—a tournament for amateur cricketers—two years running. That success in turn has generated enough interest among the migrant worker community for the establishment of a second team, the SCC Pinay.
Now they’re aiming to move up to more competitive leagues. In December some of the Divas also hope to take their talents back to the Philippines, where there are proposals to organize an international cricket series with a Philippines national women’s team competing against countries from the region. Kulkarni said some members of the Divas will likely be trying out for the national squad.
It’s a long way from worrying about clean countertops and laundry loads, and a big step for players who hadn’t heard of the sport until two years ago. Arimas is hopeful. “Maybe one day some of us can play for the Philippines,” she says.
Even if they don’t make the squad, each and every one of the Divas is already a winner. “I don’t play just for me,” says Alumbro, summing up the Divas’ ethos. “I play for all of us, because my victory is also their victory.”
