Pone Reviews 85: The Perfect Pear Happy Memorial Day and welcome back to Pone Reviews! I've been wanting to write my thoughts on this episode for a while, and I thought Memorial Day would be the perfect time for us to remember it. So who is the subject of our pony remembrance? That would be Bright McIntosh and Pear Butter, the Apple family parents. Let's look at Season 7's "The Perfect Pear!" The lesson for this episode is a bit vague, so here's my interpretation. "Learning about your family can make you feel closer to them and help you learn something about yourself." I appreciate when the show splits from traditional understandings of "friend," as family are very much your friends, too. Family history can be such an important part of someone. It can explain how you got here and why you act the way you do. Sure, no family is perfect, but why should that stop you from learning a thing or two about them? It can make you feel closer to them as well. My grandmother once told me a story about my late grandfather who fought in World War II and apparently played a big part in Japan's surrender. It really surprised me and made me stop to think about the thick military ties my family has. I never knew my grandfather that well, but learning that made me feel like I did. Research your family! You may be surprised at what you find. We go on to the plot. When Apple Bloom brings home a jar of pear jam from a kindly old stallion named Grand Pear, it takes the Apple siblings on an adventure around town to learn about their long-lost parents! This episode is so wonderful. It's the first episode that's ever made me cry. The existence of the Apple parents has been thrown around a lot over the years, only really confirmed in "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" with Applejack saying, "If Mom and Dad were here, they'd be so proud of you [Apple Bloom]." But now we learn the full story: Buttercup was actually a Pear, so it was a bit of a taboo subject. It's Romeo and Juliet played out with cartoon horses. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, however, the lovers don't court for just a few days - they take time to get to know each other before their marriage (though I highly doubt they committed suicide together). Their love story gives some perspective into the mindsets of their children: Applejack's honesty came from her father who wouldn't let Pear Butter get in trouble for something he did; Apple Bloom's love of helping others with her friends came from her mother helping others in the same way; Big Mac's modesty came from his mother who never liked giving and receiving really big things. We also see new sides to characters we never got much time to know: Granny took Buttercup in as her own and never told Grand Pear about her and Bright Mac's ultimate fate; Mrs. Cake had a best friend in Pear Butter who helped her discover a passion for cooking; Mayor Mare has experienced tons in her reign of Ponyville, including the birth of a family who has done so much for her town. We probably will never know exactly what happened to Bright Mac and Pear Butter, and their absence is treated quite frankly, which is refreshing (it's hard to know when it is a good time), but the things they did for Ponyville will be remembered for years to come. Here are some more details from this episode that made me so happy: *It's the subtle things that make you realize how much Bright Mac and Pear Butter's absence has taken a toll. Burnt Oak softly asks if the Apple siblings are there to ask about their father, then admits he hoped they would come to talk to him, and finally tears up when Big Mac asks if they can come back to hear more stories. When the siblings go to Mrs. Cake, she briefly frowns as Applejack explains why they are there before perking up and admitting she never knew when to bring the subject up. Applejack, in one transition shot, has a bag under her eye because of the giant bombshell that just got dropped on her about her parents. *Did I mention William Shatner voices Grand Pear and Felicia Day voices Pear Butter? I especially love Shatner's performance as I've never heard the style of how he adds pauses and accentuates words in any show before. His age is also very present, which helps a lot. *Ohh the song. Pear Butter's song. It's really beautiful. It shows the love these two had for each other. I love every bit of it. Felicia's voice is beautiful. *The continuity! Nightmare Moon is in the moon, Mayor Mare hasn't dyed her mane yet, Granny is the face of Sweet Apple Acres, even Goldie Delicious (an unexpected character) is in a flashback! *Grand Pear-Pere. For those who don't know, "grandpere" is the French word for grandfather. Adorable inside reference. *That final scene is so heartwrenching. Granny and Grand Pear are mourning their kids together. *I would write more, but I am crying and can't see my screen. And here are some things from this episode that are (almost) as sour as the look on Granny's face: *Baby Bright Mac and Pear Butter aren't much older than Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake and they're speaking like full-grown horses! *It must be super easy for ponies to change names if Mrs. Cup Cake was Chiffon Swirl. *Um... wow, Grand Pear for making his daughter choose. *Bright Mac immediately became a stallion while Pear Butter still had an awkward teen phase. To conclude: An emotional episode with an insightful moral and oh my God it's perfect who am I kidding. APPLE PAREEENNNNNTTTSSS. That's right, folks: This episode gets 5 out of 5 rainbows 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈 Thanks for reading a special Memorial Day Pone Reviews. I had such a good time writing this.
