new audiobook
expectation: politics and history of early american movement for ecological conservationism. i've already read about movements in the PNW in the 70s regarding the North Cascades, Olympics, and major volcanoes, i know the patterns, row row fight the power, save the owl habitat, etc
reality: sure thats what it is, but turns out that was all just harassing and massacring the Blackfeet. and the Crow. and the Sioux. and the Cheyenne. and the Shoshone. and the drive to preserve the first national park can't be separated from the drive to enforce the reservation system on all of them and exterminate indigeneity everywhere else

One of the most intriguing aspects of “The World We Used to Live In: Remembering the Powers of the Medicine Men” is it’s storytelling structure. A natural storyteller and gifted actor, Wes Studi immediately understood the “oral history” aspects of Vine’s structure and performs splendidly throughout the audiobook in sections like those presented here, first speaking as Vine Deloria, Jr. to introduce and explain each vignette and then quickly changing into whatever voices or dialects the characters in the story requires:
(As Vine)
“Warriors often had special medicine to use in warfare. Crazy Horse painted hailstones on his face, wore no feathers, and had a stone that kept him immune from wounds. Roman Nose’s warbonnet fulfilled the same function. In various stories in this collection, we can find individuals protected by a variety of sacred objects. But what happens if the individual has no power to make himself immune and must take his chances? Many men has special rituals or protectors to enable them to survive wounds that otherwise would prove fatal. Sitting Bull’s powers included the power to heal himself.
And a different voicing for:
Sitting Bull’s Self-Remedy:
A Sioux named Sitting Bull, who had long lived with the Northern Cheyennes and was called by them Short Sioux, while retreating in a running fight with the Crows, was shot in the back. The ball had gone through his body, blood was flowing from the wound in the back and in the breast, and from the man’s mouth. After the Crows had left them, Sitting Bull said to those near him. “I must find an ant-hill. Look for one.” When an ant-hill was found, Sitting Bull dismounted, collected a handful of ants, and put them in his mouth and swallowed them. “Now,” he said. “I shall be well.” He mounted and rode all through the night, and at last he recovered.”

The Arrow Keeper's Song
Tom Sandcrane must navigate the narrow path between his Cheyenne heritage and the white man’s world.
For generations, the Sandcrane men have served their tribe as the keepers of the Sacred Arrows. When the time comes for Seth Sandcrane to pass the responsibility on to his son Tom, he waits with pride for his son to assume his place among the elders of the tribe. But Tom wants nothing to do with Sacred Arrows, ancient traditions, and the mystical heritage of the Cheyenne. It is 1896, the nation is growing, and Tom wants a place in the white man’s world.
He takes a job in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a go-between for the government and the Cheyenne. When bureaucratic treachery forces Tom to become an outlaw, he must flee the land of his birth. As America teeters on the brink of the Spanish-American War, Tom Sandcrane will learn to fight – not with sacred arrows, but with a Colt .38.
