DNF: Lord Loss

I started reading The Saga of Darren Shan as a book and didn't get it. Then I read the manga adaptation and was hooked. I even finished reading that series when I ran out of English versions and only the Spanish versions were available. Some stories are meant to be adapted into different forms.

Other stories... not so much.

I wasn't sure what to expect with The Demonata other than knowing it was violent. I had read and enjoyed Invincible before the show came out and I've finished The First Law okay, so I thought I would be okay.

I was dead fucking wrong. When I tell you this book is violent you should take that as absolute gospel because Jesus Fucking Christ it's grotesque. And it happens in the first 15 pages of the books and only goes from there! A kid's parents and sister get torn apart by a trio of some of the nastiest demons in all of fiction, and he has to learn to deal with them.

The book is the darkest children's book I've ever read. I wanted to see where it went from here only to find out the books get darker and bleaker. I am in no way prepared to deal with that so I'm tapped out.

Should you read it? Fuck me, I don't know. There's a certain kind of person who enjoys a good descent into madness and darkness. Darren O'Shaughnessy is undoubtedly great at writing unflinching horror. Maybe if you've enjoyed Hellraiser and want a different-but-similar kick it's the book for you. Just... Be prepared with a bucket for the nausea that comes when the bodies hit the floor.

Demonata, Darren Shan, June 6, 2005 to October, YA Book

Oh do I have a bone to pick with you. This series was so good with the first few books but once all the characters are together? Shit.

Bec could’ve easily been so helpful during the last part but noooo let’s make her not tell anyone the plan and have the two main characters think she betrayed them and have them to pick up the dying scraps of humanity? Let’s just have Grubbs force his “friend” Kernal to keep fighting the hopeless fight.

And for what? They don’t get anything at the end. They destroy the universe and have to rebuild it. And the demon who started all of this chaos for them doesn’t even get to be punished? These are children! Holy fuck, Lord Loss ruined the lives of these three kids and he gets nothing!

Meanwhile these said kids have to rebuild the universe from scratch. They won’t ever see their families, friends, not even earth, for years! They are forced to be gods when they didn’t even finish school! They fought and clawed just to have to do more work.

Imagine you lose your entire family to a force you can’t control. And now you have to watch as 1000s of civilizations die and grow and you have to be the one do to do that. By the time earth comes you’ve seen it all happen over and over again.

TLDR: The Demonata ending sucked because they’re making these teens fight to try and save the world only for them to have wait billions of years to even see the start of earth, and the demon who killed their families still gets to walk away scott free

While reading Trials of Apollo, I'm looking back on how I got into reading books because I wasn't a reader as a kid.

Reading novels wasn't fun for me, which impacted my reading development. I couldn't focus on the words, and I lost track of my lines. By the time I was in fifth grade, I had the reading level of a 2nd grader.

Hitting middle school, I stumbled upon Cirque du Freak while everyone was reading Twilight. It was a fun series, and the next thing I knew, I was reading The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod in high school.

Then I came upon Percy Jackson at my high school book fair. The rest is history.

It's just a wild thought, really.
