... the fact that he would, quite soon, be free of Robin was an inextricable part of his enjoyment of her presence ...
... from the very first he had told himself: this far and no further ...
... she occupied a unique place in his thoughts and in his affections ...
... he’d called her into the inner office because he wanted her company as long as he could get it ...
Equally spaced Strike on Ellacott quotes.

I picked up the cuckoo's calling a week ago, of course partly because of her opinions now and the knowledge that's impacted the later Strike-books, but honestly it was mostly just on a whim. I am so so happy I did because I'm really enjoying it! Can't put it down! I've read a lot of heavy books lately and it is so nice to have a plot driven, easy, but well written book to enjoy! I was a massive potterkid, but grew a bit out of it in my late teens - but I am intrigued to see how she writes for adults!

"…I think they might be a bit tight on your big hairy mitts. Though Ciara certainly wasn't complaining about them. Oh no, you got quite the five star review, darling. And she's had plenty to compare you with."

[ID: Cormoran sits in a restaurant, a laden plate with a rice dish in front of him. He’s wearing a light blue shirt and a dark blue blazer. He looks at someone sitting opposite with a mild frown on his beardy face./end ID]

I love this video from 5 years ago today because among other bird calls faintly in the background you can hear a black-billed cuckoo, a bird I rarely hear.

Listening again and have picked up two more paperbacks. 🥴
One last moment of madness, the space between heartbeats, like the one that had sent him hurtling after her five days previously: he would stay here, after all, waiting for her to return; then cupping her perfect face in his hands and saying ‘Let’s try again.’
But they had already tried, again and again and again, and always, when the first crashing wave of mutual longing subsided, the ugly wreck of the past lay revealed again, its shadow lying darkly over everything they tried to rebuild.

MOST ICONIC BIRD CALL BRACKET: ROUND ONE: MALLARD DUCK vs. COMMON CUCKOO
IN THE BLUE CORNER, we have a returning crowd favorite, the feathered showman of the ring, the mallard duck!
with that glossy bottle-green head and that perfectly oiled plumage, this wrestler looks like he means business. this dabbling duck might prefer to peacefully forage for food underwater, but don't let that fool you - this is a bird that knows how to hold its own in a fight. similar to most ducks, this wrestler can be identified by a deep, loud quack - powerful, but endearing.
IN THE RED CORNER, this is no broken clock - it's the common cuckoo!
there's nothing common about this bird. this avian powerhouse is a master of deception and disguise, laying its eggs in the nests of other birds. even that barred plumage is part of its trickery, resembling an eurasian sparrowhawk and striking fear into the hearts of its opponents. and that call? ladies and gentlemen, if you are a fan of novelty clocks, you are surely in for a treat here. listen to that two-syllable coo-coo! is the cuckoo bird ready to swoop in and steal the show? let's find out!
