Zander + Callum celebrate Valentine's Day
How do a medium and a spirit-blocking cynic share their first Valentine's Day together? Hint: with some 🔥 and 🌶--and no 👻.
I know Heart Day was a few days ago, but when you write people falling in love for a living (and it’s your passion) Valentine’s Day is a whole week-long celebration. So humor me for a second, and follow me on this mini, love-laced, Cloaked Series journey. How would Callum + Zander have spent their first Valentine’s Day? The question popped into my head earlier this month, and immediately, I…

Critics of the first season of Cloak and Dagger eat your hearts out. The double episode season two premiere last week is what you get when you are patient to allow a story to tell itself. Now here we are with the new season and next chapter where everything is about putting these powers to work. You still wouldn’t call these two superheroes, but they are doing their damned best to save what they can.
Where the season premiere hit the ground running, this week’s episode hits us with the same momentum carried over. Things were already getting intense with Ty and Tandy attacking the corrupt in their city, but the introduction of Mayhem really cranked the dial. As I said before, this is a different kind of Mayhem we are being exposed to. The minute they decided that Brigid would instead be split into two different people we were dealing with a whole new kind of danger. I couldn’t argue with it either because they had a solid explanation for this while at the same time embracing the wonders in what those chemicals can unlock in people. With that said, the writing for Brigid was great for the fact that this was someone acting as two different sides of the same person. They didn’t take too many risks either trying to place her on the same screen. Sometimes it just isn’t necessary.

You still wouldn’t call Brigid/Mayhem your typical villain, but still the question of morality is worth the exploration till she eventually reaches that point where she crosses the moral event horizon. Till that point, Mayhem keeps you at the edge of your seat when seeing exactly what could happen if anyone else were in that position where they let their emotions steer the wheel. Girls missing in a community is a sensitive subject no matter where you look.
While figuring things out for Brigid, this was as well the best time to finally address where this season picks up from. Color me shocked to actually figure out how much time had passed between season one and two. Not to mention everything you didn’t think could have happened between then and now.
Overall, I found that this chapter was heartbreaking. Its one thing to simply want to put an end to this trafficking because its wrong. What we experienced here was the painful realization of the experience on both sides of the coin. The trauma of going through this madness, and the damage done when one suffering leads into the next. They hit all the right notes here which is commendable.

MARVEL’S CLOAK & DAGGER – “Shadow Selves” – (Marvel/Alfonso Bresciani) AUBREY JOSEPH, EMMA LAHANA, OLIVIA HOLT
As for Ty and Tandy, I enjoyed how they have both reached a point where they can be rattled by these developments, but not to the point where they couldn’t believe what was going on. They have the corrupt to deal with, and now they have a split version of Brigid who has the same mission, but willing to drop as many bodies as need be to get the job done. At this point it became clear where the showrunners are going when they decided to set the theme to this season around revenge and justice. That can always change for these characters over time, but for right now we know that everyone has their way of tackling the problems in front of them.
With this second season I do like seeing that they are slowly bringing us closer to the comic accurate versions of this duo. With their evolving powers, there’s also their weaknesses becoming more apparent as well. Particularly with one of them who we know will soon succumb to the source of their power.

MARVEL’S CLOAK & DAGGER – “Shadow Selves” – (Marvel/Alfonso Bresciani) ALLY MAKI
It was also appreciated that in this episode there were characters they found the time to get around to who had relevant roles in the first season. It makes a big difference to show how everyone moved forward from that madness for better or for worse. You would expect some to walk away a bit damaged, while others you would expect to move forward with new motivations. One of those people we actually already knew to be Mina. I was glad to see her again. It mattered showing that not everyone had been chased away by either Ty or Tandy. Especially when they can provide answers or even a solution to problems that are well beyond the realm of normal understanding.
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger “Shadow Selves” really took things to the next level. This is a fight for the soul of this city, and the soul that you battle to keep when hard calls have to be made for the sake of justice. Right now momentum and pacing are key to the excitement of this story. Hopefully they do not let this up anytime soon.

This is Why
An ah-ha moment that put my career "why" into perspective (+ a tiny ode to my love of the best show ever.) 💗🧡💛💚💙💜
Have you ever had a moment when something happens that snaps things/your life/your career into perspective? I’ve had many of them with my kiddos–when my daughter was admitted to the hospital and I stayed there with her for 9 days; watching my son teach himself to read; any time I get to witness that ah-ha moment when a concept they’ve been struggling with finally clicks (I love that moment!)–but…
