Since I had a good drink with my THG buddies again, I’m just gonna drop my personal TOP 10 favorite TBOSAS fanfics of the month. My previous list is [this] if anyone wants to read. Cheers!

1. With Age Comes Love by morelikediscordinated

It’s that Snowjanus story that surprisingly pulled all of my heartstrings in one sitting. It includes a lot of kissing and some misunderstandings here and there. However, it gave us delulu folks the happy ending that we secretly want from our two walking disasters.😘

2. Arrangements by helloimdeadinside

It’s a greatly written ongoing Snowjanus story that features two awkward teenagers who were arranged to be married by a scheming Strabo Plinth because of political reasons. To be fair, Grandma’am was the one who agreed to the match. So enjoy~.😏

3. Hear it call to me, constantly by ColorMeHappy

It’s a great Snowjanus story within an ongoing series that features a lot of crying from Sejanus and a world changing breakdown from Coryo. 10/10. Would read again.

4. Hate is a strong word by KatcadeCascade

This is one of my personal favorite Snowjanus oneshots ever. That’s it. That’s all I can say. So just start reading this masterpiece while I’ll start eating some Gouda cheese.

5. To Where She Flew by madzdolin

It’s a greatly written ongoing SnowBaird story that explores a lot of different “What Ifs” to make a compelling narrative. Also, we got your usual amnesia trope, redemption arcs, well written side characters, and Capitol conspiracies.

6. Blood of my blood by loveshazel

This is the SnowBaird story where Coryo’s parents are still alive and kicking along with their irreversible war traumas. Also, our poor cabbage boy’s little sister is there too.

7. A Bird in the Hand by horrormoviebarbie

This is that ongoing SnowBaird story where crazy Coryo is trying his best to fight off his destined redemption arc until he gives up and joins the good side unwillingly.😭🤣

8. Nothing Burns Like The Snow by evilweasel

This ongoing SnowBaird story features our favorite Crazy Peepaw Snow living his best life with Sweet Meemaw Baird. Meanwhile, Katniss and fam are starving and the only thing she wants in order for Prim to survive is by adopting the old crazy couple whether they like it or not. And Crazy Peepaw Plinth is also alive, I guess?

9. i deserve it, don’t i by ColorMeHappy

This greatly written Snowjanus oneshot is really sweet and is filled with sweets. I mean, it literally features a starving Coryo wanting to eat chocolates and cookies. So Sejanus bakes and provides for his poor cabbage boy.

10. Cyanide Dipped Roses by Angelsbite_demonkiss

It’s that ongoing Snowjanus Omegaverse that features a desperate Coryo who was forced to change his dreams and future plans because of his omega status. And because freaking Dean Highbottom bent the rules again out of spite. So the only way to secure the House of Snow’s future is to marry a rich man who is willing to provide everything for our poor cabbage boy. #SugarBabyCoryoSnowisonthemove

Thoughts upon finishing The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Spoilers unmarked ahead as it's been out for a while and the title of the post warns for them.

As I've mentioned in my other few posts about it so far, I came into TBOSAS as a movie-only watcher despite having been a book-first person back when the original Hunger Games films came out.

I've got to say that when I heard the idea of a prequel about President Snow which included a love story, my tumblr-raised self wasn't particularly interested. I remember seeing the book display at Walmart when it first came out and not really having time or interest at the time.

However, the movie trailer caught my attention, and I'm really glad that it did.

I am happy that TBOSAS, while having a single POV character in Snow, switched from first person narration to third person. I remember reading meta years ago that I wholeheartedly agree with. While one can make the argument that the "blindspots" one gets in the original trilogy themselves make a point, having a slightly more zoomed out, third person point of view just feels better for the scope of the story. As an English teacher, I can't help but feel like it's a little more mature, too.

But without the movie, I still don't know if I would have ever picked up this book in audio or visual format.

Funnily enough, looking back on the first four Hunger Games movies, I actually don't like them as much as I like the books for the most part. The visuals are good in parts, but I do not like the casting philosophy that was used. I sort of hope that we are around long enough to see remakes as a prestige miniseries or something like that.

Back to thoughts on TBOSAS: I remember seeing a few kind of poorly produced (sorry lol) thinkpieces on websites like ScreenRant that were insisting that you weren't getting the full picture from the movie, that the movie made Snow too sympathetic, that you have to understand he's a monster because he views Lucy Gray in an objectifying manner or because he gets Sejanus killed.

I think that those takes have a point. However, I think that they also miss the nuance of the narrative, and I am not even suggesting that the prose is particularly deep or esoteric. Just that people love to be reactionary.

What I saw in Snow's character throughout the book was someone who was warring with various philosophical and personal dilemmas without having anyone he ever really trusted to talk through it.

There are moments with Lucy Gray and with Sejanus when Coryo almost opens up completely. When he has real conversations with them. But, like Katniss, he is a traumatized person who has a lot of baggage which makes him strategize and behave defensively with every decision he makes.

If anything, Coryo is LESS closed off than Katniss is at first throughout most of the story.

I couldn't source it, but I distinctly remember reading someone suggest that they believed that Coriolanus became irredeemable when he got Sejanus killed. However, reading through his internal conflict about the decision to snitch on him was one of the times when I found Coriolanus the most human and relatable. He was torn in every direction. He is someone who is deeply propagandized into a fascist regime whose family has a personal narrative of power and meaning within that regime. He also believes that the Capitol is necessary and better than the alternative. He wants Sejanus to survive and to change his mind. He wants him to stop putting himself in danger. He wants him to stop implicating Coriolanus by association. And yet, Coriolanus does feel responsible and tied to him, however much he hates it.

Coriolanus defends himself from emotional attachment and the cost of loving anyone, romantically or platonically, as a defense mechanism.

It isn't until he works himself into a frenzy and narrates what Lucy Gray must be thinking out at the lake in the end that he finds himself so utterly alone in his own head that he has no choice in his mind except to give into his colder side that he associates with his father, the Capitol, and ruthlessness.

Interestingly, a running theme throughout the book - without ever being explicitly stated in these exact words - is that Coriolanus is irreligious and doesn't believe in gods, rituals, or an afterlife. Every time someone brings up the stars or fate or performs some kind of ritual associated with passing on an even in the scene where Lucy Gray sings about the hereafter and therebefore, he can't help but internally scoff at the idea. He holds himself as more enlightened than those who believe in such superstitions.

But then, when he is all alone and trying to navigate his way back to District 12 with his father's compass, he starts to believe that there is some kind of spiritual guidance and blessing from his father, whom he never even felt close to except as an idea.

I think that Coriolanus's internal journey is an exploration of opposites and the divide that Lucy Gray describes and how evil is rarely even a boundary over which one cannot cross back into good from. It's just that, at a certain point, Coriolanus cannot bear the weight of his own guilt and misgivings if he ever turns back to a "better" path.

On the subject of Lucy Gray: I've got to say that I thought the book was effective in showing Lucy Gray as someone with dimension and depth that Coriolanus saw glimpses of but never really fully understood. Had he stayed with her and not needed "civilization" so much, I believe he would have learned to see her as more and more of a full person. However, the way she is written in the book, it is really hard for me to get a mental image of her at all.

Again, I think that this is perhaps intentional as a part of this format of the story. However, I find that I appreciate Rachel Ziegler's portrayal of Lucy Gray so much because without it, I'm not sure I would find that much to emotionally invest in. This is actually quite the opposite, as I like my mental image of Katniss far more than JLaw's portrayal lol.

Anyway, those are my wrap-up thoughts.

don’t delete the kisses

chapter one.

“Corroborating with the previous sources, it’s evident that the Capitol’s victory was necessary and the biggest step Panem has taken to a brighter future. Thank you.” 

The class erupted into a weak applause. Clemensia smiled cunningly, swiftly gathering her notes from the pod, and strutting up to her seat in the second row. What a stupid girl, Coriolanus thought to himself while slowly clapping. Her conclusion was feeble and predictable, not stable enough for a convincing argument nor strong enough to get the point truly across. Times like these he is not surprised she begs him for academic assistance, with a little favour of course. The truth was there was not one person on the face of this earth that Coriolanus truly cared about, not a singular one. He did not believe that love was real and had more of a placebo theory. One convinces themselves that the person they find attractive for their outer appearance is the one for them. They spend months pining after them, creating ideas in their own head in the meanwhile, consuming media that depicts ‘love’ for hours, and media that tells them it exists; it just simply does not.

At least he has never felt it. He cared about people. He had attraction towards a few girls, fucking a lot of them, but never once truly felt love for them. It just simply wasn’t something he’d experienced in his eighteen years of life. Not once. Not ever. At one point, he believed something was wrong with him. He would finish in a girl’s mouth and send her home. She then would send him a letter reading ‘your amazing x’, and all Coriolanus would acknowledge is how she has a grammatical era; it’s you’re. If you’re going to spell it wrong, get rid of the kisses at the end and save yourself the embarrassment, he would think. 

He sat there, twiddling with his pen lost in his own thoughts. The thoughts being what would he eat for dinner if he finishes all his lunch? Nothing. His dilemma abruptly interrupted by Dr Gaul announcing her presence from the back for the room. Startled, Coriolanus along with his other peers remain silent. Coriolanus often wondered if she was not a staff member, why she didn’t situate her laboratory elsewhere, somewhere far away from the Academy.

“Hello everyone, I take you are quite busy due to assignments, presentations and exams being due within the next couple of weeks,” she began, her frizzy hair almost moving along with her words, “I hope you’re taking your studies seriously. Average is simply not accepted. I am here to notify you we have a new student, someone of reputable background and new to the Capitol. Her IQ is recorded as one of the highest in the entirety of Panem within the last forty years, please treat her accordingly.”

Highest in the whole of Panem? Within the last forty years? This was including both Coriolanus and Sejanus’s fathers. All their fathers and mothers. Even before the dark days? A girl? This wasn’t possible, Coriolanus thought to himself. Already seething in his seat at the announcement of her arrival. Why was no one else’s announcement announced? What made this girl so different? Coriolanus pondered, his jealousy seeping. The entire class watched as Dr Gaul walked towards the door and opened it slightly, peeking her head outside and mumbling something.

“Here she is. Everyone, welcome her.” Dr Gaul urged. The entire class remained silent, waiting for her to walk through the door.

Coriolanus eagerly glared at the door. A girl entered the room, her head held high. The feeling of irritation instantly leaving his body, now replaced by astonishment. His body heat up, heartbeat raising at the mere sight of this girl. She stood self-assuredly at the top of the stairs, her smile was there for a moment, and then gone. Coriolanus looked around the room desperately, praying someone would make her smile again, anyone. He desperately wanted to see it again. She was a district girl before, who was now rich? And she looked the way she did? In the districts? How was it possible she got out alive without being kidnapped or harmed for being appealing as she was? Coriolanus questioned; bewildered.

Her hair was dark and curly, falling past her shoulders. Her skin was like what Coriolanus could only describe as a penny; bronze, warm, like she’d been outside actively. Nobody in the Capitol looked like that, nobody. Her smile was bright as well, not like other District pests. Her eyes were striking, alluring, dark. Coriolanus, abnormally nervous, observed as she scanned the room. Silently admitting to himself she was exasperatingly gorgeous. The uniform sat on her astonishingly well, it looked tailored, her figure seeping out of the unappealing pieces of cloth. Coriolanus snapped his head towards the sound of his male peers in the row ahead of him eagerly tapping each other’s elbows, indicating that he was not the only person taken aback by her appearance. Aggravating him vastly. 

She spoke after standing for a while, “Hi, everyone. I feel as though Dr Gaul here has given me a great introduction, but I hope I don't have to remind anyone that my academic achievements don't define who I am as a person. What I love, or what I believe. So, there’s no need to be shy, talk to me. I’m not stuck up, I promise.”

With that Coriolanus was seething once again. She was more articulate than him although she grew up in the districts. How does it make any sense? She is prettier, smarter, and more confident than any he’d ever come across in the Capitol. Her voice was awfully delicate too, her accent was distinct. District 2? Coriolanus was bewildered by the situation, but still, he took the opportunity to stare at her for as long as he could, it was the only time he’d get away with doing so. He sat in his chair wondering how he could ever graduate on top if she was here. 

She was gorgeous and intelligent with an aura that could make anyone weak. How could he land on top if she existed? He needed her out. Immediately.

I feel like whenever I write ravincote, someone dies. Maybe I should change things up. This time...what if neither of them die?

District born Clemmie and Mentor Felix?

oooh okay! i'm going to bounce off your district born clemmie au and say that she and reaper are the d11 tributes-

i. d11 alliance

so felix is clemmie's mentor! not sure who reaper's mentor would be in this scenario, but it shouldn't make much of a difference since reaper likely wouldn't be super inclined to connect with them anyway. reaper is somewhat warming up to felix after felix starts bringing along enough food for the both of them (after he realized that clemmie was going to share with reaper no matter what he told her, so he might as well just bring more so that clemmie gets a full share).

reaper is probably initially put off that clemmie is being so friendly towards felix at the start, and warns her to be careful with him, but charm is her forte so she's able to handle herself. i feel like felix would fall first- he'd make some excuses like "clemensia isn't like the other tributes, she's actually civilized" and if he foolishly voices that sentiment aloud, clemmie would likely set him straight (in very careful words that wouldn't be outright hostile, but make it clear that she Very Much disagrees that she's some 'exception' and doesn't appreciate him dehumanizing others for her sake)

clemmie would likely fall later. she might get to the point of considering him a friend, enough to turn to look for him and see if he's alive when the bombs come down on the arena, but at the end of the day, the hunger games are still going on, and she resigns herself to knowing that whatever that might have been- if they could have been friends or more in another life- it would not be in this one.

except. except, she's made a good enough impression during the interviews to get sponsors. maybe not as many as lucy gray or coral, but more than enough. she might have convinced reaper to partake in interviews with his mentor, if only for her sake since they are in an alliance. and they survive past the snakes. teslee has killed mizzen, treech killed teslee, lucy gray has pulled of her snake gambit on treech, except treech manages to kill her in turn before he succumbs to the poison. and then there were two.

clemensia and reaper might not be inclined to kill each other, but food won't last forever, and only one of them is leaving the arena. it's a dilemma they decide to leave for the next day. only one can survive, but they don't need to make that decision immediately. until they realize reaper has rabies. he's dying a slow death, and now it's a matter of how he's going to die. are they waiting it out? maybe clemmie offers a mercy kill. or maybe reaper asks.

in any case, clemmie comes out of the arena as the victor of the 10th hunger games, and she is much less enthused about it than felix is when he meets her before she boards the train back to d11. technically, he's not supposed to be there at all, but he's a ravinstill, and he has PrivilegesTM. how much their relationship progresses would likely depend on if felix uses his nepotism to follow clemmie back to d11 or if he uses it to bring her back to the capitol.

ii. hector haunts the narrative

as an alternative scenario to how clemmie wins the games- maybe hector and max had been friends for a while when hector had moved to the capitol as a child (with max pining, as he always does), but had moved back to the districts when he was starting a family. hector dies his early death, to a disease that he was trying to treat in the community he lived in, and maximinius doesn't learn that until later, upon which he is extremely upset, doubly so when he learns that he can't have hector's body moved to the capitol for a "proper" funeral (max does not think highly of the funeral rites in d11).

endymion grows up in d11, and later, so does clemmie. she gets reaped alongside reaper, and max is sort of freaking out now. first, because gaul thought it would be amusing to assign felix to d11, then because the girl that was reaped as a dovecote. max suspects that gaul might have had her reaped on purpose. whether it was rigged or simply bad luck, he is never able to get a straight answer out of gaul. it does put a strain on their relationship though, which makes gaul miffed. (#when your codependent toxic bestie doesn't understand your sense of humor and also child murder games are involved)

felix and clemmie's dynamic is similar to scenario i, except that max is much more invested in what is happening. when he sees his great-nephew crushing on hector's granddaughter and he basically goes "well, fuck". max doesn't want hector's granddaughter to die in the hunger games that he's spent the past decade trying to delude himself into believing hector would have seen reason about (he knows deep down that hector would have loathed the entire idea of them), and he doesn't want felix to face the loss that he had to, falling for a charming dovecote and losing them. especially since, if clemensia died here, it would technically be max's fault, no matter which tribute felled her.

clemmie wins the games, but it wasn't luck or fate or any alliance that she had made, it's max rigging the games. unlike scenario i, i think clemmie might be pressed to stay in the capitol rather than being sent home- both because felix wants to stay with her, but mostly because of the presidential pressure. max has a misguided sense of "doing right by hector" by keeping clemensia in the capitol to "make up for lost time" and acclimate her to the "right" way of living. (if hector was still alive, max would be getting decked.)

dovecote may not be a prominent capitol name, but there's quite a few of the old guard that remember a dovecote, and it isn't hard for max to spin a story- backed by his position as president- that oh, clemensia is a poor, lost, should-have-been-capitol girl that was mistakenly left to the districts. clemmie is Not Happy about this story, and i imagine she butts heads with felix quite a bit in getting him to understand why she's upset about it.

felix goes through quite a bit of character development in trying to reconcile clemensia and being raised in the districts, learning to understand that she's not "civilized" because her grandfather lived in the capitol for a stretch of time, it's because the people in the districts are exactly that: people. once that point of understanding is reached, it's easier for them to fall into a friendship (and later, romance. but first- clemmie has plans for change.)

clemmie is hardly idle during her time in the capitol, but all her plans to make things better for the community she was raised in (especially since her parents are still in d11) are taking quite a bit of time. felix goes from an ally to a partner in clemmie's view, and she grows to love him in a felix-fell-first-she-fell-harder kind of way. clemmie wants a happy ending, and felix is more than willing to leverage all the influence he has to make sure they both do.

iii. mentor androcles

okay, this one is pretty far fetched compared to the other two, but the thought popped into my head while typing the the other options out so i figured i'd just add it to this post- androcles as clemmie's mentor and felix as reaper's mentor.

androcles takes a shine to clemensia almost immediately. he's not too keen on her chances of physically fighting in the games, but clemmie knows the importance of making a good impression and androcles is inclined to help by making visits and bringing food at least. reaper thinks androcles has weird vibes, but androcles hasn't done anything like bringing hearts so him being offput by clemmie's mentor is more of a gut feeling.

reaper isn't too keen on felix either, and felix is having a much tougher time connecting to reaper than androcles is having getting along with clemmie. felix and clemmie probably exchange a few words, just because she and reaper are likely sticking together, and in leiu of reaper ignoring felix, clemmie figures she might as well try to get something out of him. these mentors are their only connection to getting supplies, and even if she is very aware of the reality of dying in the arena, she doesn't want to starve in the days leading up to it.

after several more interactions, felix is torn between considering reaper a 'good tribute' and bemoaning that reaper doesn't want to work with him- why can't reaper be as personable and charming as clemensia? there's more than a little jealousy towards androcles bc felix has quickly grown fond of her. que dilemma over wanting reaper to win vs wanting clemmie to survive & coming to the slow realization that the games come down to reaper and clemensia, those two are not going to kill each other.

i don't remember where i was going with this except for androcles getting pushed into his serial killer arc early - clemmie ends up winning the games by one of the ways above, and felix is thrilled. clemmie is less thrilled, but felix is stubborn and probably tries following her back to d11. which probably also gives maximinius a heart attack and a half bc his great-nephew heading off to the same district that hector died in.

androcles is miffed because that's his tribute, what the heck felix. clemmie is So Done because the hunger games were an awful experience and she did not expect survival to come along with two out-of-touch capitol boys chasing after her. (...now that i think about it, this scenario would probably end with felix and/or clemmie dead at the end of it. oops.)

Bestie recent thg reblog got me thinking and I know I’m late to this revelation but Peeta’s stunt with the Bread? The boy is a REBEL since birth?!?!

If I remember correctly Katniss is surprised at him at a few points for being so rebellious - his position in town makes him out to be straight laced - but rebellion is one of his core trait and arguably why Katniss has always liked him.

Peeta’s first encounter with her is a pure rebellion, where he stands to gain nothing, but stands to loose a lot. The only authority in his young life threatens him with violence, but he defies it anyway. Because it’s right. Because we have bread that we’re throwing away, don’t we owe it to the starving girl?

Don’t we owe each other things? Doesn’t it matter?

Something something he’s like Katniss’s father, a rebel when it counts, even when he gets nothing out of it, in the name of kindness, etc. etc.

YES!!!!! he's always been a rebel -- i always also think about the moment in catching fire when she's surprised that he's angry at the capitol party. and it's like my queen, how are you surprised about all this coming from mr. "hold them out i want everyone to see"?? it's another one of his character traits that gets GUTTED in the films, but yeah everything starts with the bread because THE BREAD IS REBELLING. it's going decisively against what his mother is doing (having food to give but feeding it to a pig instead of another person) and thus rebelling not only against his family on a situational level but also against an entire society and system of beliefs (that his mother subscribes to)

so your connection of peeta to katniss' father is extremely apt!! i don't know if i've ever articulated that before, or really even made that connection, but it's true that all katniss' favorite people, all the people she loves the most, are the ones who are not just rebels in *name* but rebels in their actions from the very first moment they're introduced. peeta, her father, haymitch, even rue. (and yes, i would include her mother in that as well -- because her parents are rebels in the fact that they ALSO reject the seam vs. town narrative of twelve. katniss aligns herself with her father in her head but she's similar to her mother in many ways as well -- which is the reason her mother's abandonment hurts her so deeply and scars so permanently.)

what do we owe to each other? what is fair and what is just? what does it mean to owe anything at all? is owing a debt that must be repaid or is it simply owing someone kindness when you have nothing else to give? the hunger games asks a lot of questions about what it means to "owe" someone something, what you can "repay" someone for, what is a "debt" and what we are owed by our society and our social groups simply for being human. for example: if someone saves your life, and you save theirs, can you then extract yourself from the relationship? is there nothing more owed? katniss lives this dilemma out in the first book -- and she can't. peeta even excuses her, saying "you've repaid that debt in full" but she still can't let go. so perhaps owing is not about fairness at all -- it is never a simple calculation, one life saving incident equals one life saving incident back. because you don't *have* to do extraordinary things to deserve kindness. you don't have to save someone's life to earn their love. we aren't owed kindness because of a debt. we are owed kindness because we are human.

A/N: My first attempt at a snowbaird fic. Borrowed a prompt from a stash on ao3. Taking my own little spin on it. Here's hoping it doesn't suck.

Summary: Canon Divergent - After firing a shot at Lucy Gray and finding her alive and without memory of him, Coriolanus makes a choice that will alter their future for as long as those memories stay hidden.

Chapter 1 -

The thud and gasp that followed Lucy Gray falling froze Coryo where he stood rooted to the spot.

Had he done it? Had he killed her?

She tried to kill you first.

He adjusted the gun in his grasp and slowly made his way to where she had fallen, intent on finishing the job if necessary. Now that she was no longer on his side, no longer linked to him, no longer loved him, no longer trusted him, she was a liability, and one he needed to get rid of if he were ever to be free.

If he were to ever return home and restore his family and family name. Which was all he’d wished for long before he met Lucy Gray.

But something happened when he approached Lucy Gray’s body. It was still, un-moving. But dead?

He kicked at her foot lightly, still gripping his gun. There was no sound. He lowered his weapon and himself, crouched low to the ground and turned her over, noticing for the first time the large rock that she’d fallen onto.

She bled.

It wasn’t a deep cut and could easily be cleaned and bandaged up in the cabin, if he was in the mind to do such a thing. He searched her body for a bullet wound, but there was none. He’d missed.

She’d likely tripped after the sound of the gun went off and went down, then blacked out after her face took a beating from the rock.

Finish the job echoed in his mind over and over, just as it had on all previous of his kills, on every bad decision he’d ever made in his life, pushing him towards it, egging him on until he’d achieved the task.

But seeing the act for what it was and being able to look at his options, no longer consumed by the fight-or-flight, predator-vs-prey emotions, he could see the beauty in what he’d almost destroyed.

He sighed and dropped his gun.

“Why didn’t you just answer me, Lucy Gray?” he whispered. “We could’ve…talked it out.”

But would she have left anyway? Scared of him and the killer he’d become? He never would’ve hurt her.

But you did, or were trying to. You were trying to kill her. Your Lucy Gray.

Guilt consumed him, and shame.

He brushed aside a mangled blood-stained lock that had drifted into her face and tucked it behind her ear. Then, without thinking or noticing anything else other than the fact that she was just faintly breathing, he lifted her up in his arms, snatching up the gun next, so as not to leave the evidence where anyone could find it, and carried them both back to the cabin.

As soon as the door closed, the rain started again, but this time it poured. Coryo put the gun under the floorboards where he’d first found it. He’d bury it in the lake when the rain stopped, and when he was sure Lucy Gray wouldn’t run away on him.

Meanwhile, he tended to her wound, dabbing at it with a warm, wet cloth and hearing her moan softly as he did. She was waking up. Her eyes fluttered open just as he had finished bandaging her wound with some supplies he’d found in the cabin. The cut would leave a mark, but it would fade with time. And there’d definitely be no killing her now, not after he saved her life and treated the cause of her cut.

They’d have to talk. He’d tell her about that third kill, about Sejanus, about how he’d set him up and then come to regret it, but it’d been too late to change anything then. His only dilemma would be preventing her from running off when he did it. He had to make her see, make her understand. He’d only been trying to follow the rules. He didn’t think ahead to the consequences. And now he only wanted her, only had her, his dream to restore his family in the capitol a faint thought in comparison, even if he did manage to bury the gun.

He couldn’t go on if Lucy Gray didn’t want to be with him or couldn’t look him in the eye or was dead. He’d turn into a monster.

But you almost kill-

He blocked out the noise, that haunting echoing voice.

He watched Lucy Gray as she shifted on the couch and opened her eyes completely.

“Where am I?” she asked, looking around with confusion.

“At the cabin,” he said, approaching her as she reached up and felt at the bandage on her forehead. “You took a pretty bad fall, but I tended to it, no worries. You’ll just have a bit of a scar.”

He crouched down so they were nearly eye-to-eye. There was confusion in her eyes still.

“Are you alright? How do you feel?” He reached for her arm that appeared to be trembling, and she tensed just before he got to it, letting his hand fall to his side.

“Are you scared of me?” he asked, not wanting the answer but needing to ask.

“I don’t know who you are,” she said bluntly, then licked her dried lips. “I thank you for helping me,” she continued before he could interject with a building rage of how she could pretend not to know him. “Maybe you could tell me your name?”

“You really don’t know,” he said, awestruck and horrified, but belatedly seeing this as an opportunity.

She shook her head.

“Do you know your name?”

“I assume it’s the Lucy Gray you keep going on and on about.” She paused. “Heard that name a few times before I came to.”

He smiled faintly and nodded.

“I’m Coryo. Short for Coriolanus.”

“That name sounds mighty fancy. I’ll take the short one, if you don’t mind.”

“Fine with me.”

He smiled, and she smiled back, and it was if the horror in the woods hadn’t happened. He still loved her. He loved this her, the Lucy Gray that trusted him, was kind to him, didn’t fear him. This girl he could love with his whole heart till the end of his days.

But was it only a matter of time until she remembered and turned on him again?

Her grumbling tummy interrupted his dark thoughts.

“Hungry?”

“A little,” she admitted.

“You’re in luck. I caught us some fish, cooked it too before the rain started up again. You want some?”

“That’d be great,” she said, inching up on the couch so she was sitting straight up.

Coryo reached for a knitted blanket and draped it over her lap. He was just about to get up to go get some of said fish for them when Lucy Gray took notice of the fine cloth sticking out of his pocket.

“What’s that?”

“Hmm?”

“That. In your…?” She let her sentence trail off.

His gaze whipped to hers, and he looked for any sign that she was pretending, that she wasn’t trying to jog his memory to when she’d tried to kill him in the woods, using the trap of his gift to her from his mother as bait.

But there was nothing but curiosity and confusion in Lucy Gray’s eyes.

He pulled it free and showed it to her. It was dirty from being on the ground, but you could still tell it was made of a fine quality.

“It was my mother’s.”

“You take it everywhere you go?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.

And he thought about telling her he gave it to her, because he’d been in love and wanted her to have it. And that she’d sworn to take good care of it before she concealed a snake inside it. But he didn’t want that truth out in the open, not yet. It was too horrible to be real.

So instead, he nodded.

“It reminds me of her.”

She smiled faintly, and he turned away to retrieve the fish, burying the dark memories as deep back as he could. If Lucy Gray no longer shared them, then he would do his damndest to forget them too.

thinking about "being unable to see people as just evil." imo it's a useful quality, and with thg/tbosas i like that that perspective is kinda baked into the narrative. that's part of why the mentors are so interesting to me -- most of them are probably doomed to become tools of a terrible system (they're destined for brilliant careers in the capitol, after all) but for now they're all 18-year-olds doing their best and probably hiding what they really believe. if they even know what they believe. AND on top of all that, they survived the dark days together? god

btw i got lysistrata on your uquiz and she's great so i appreciate it lol. her being childhood friends with snow is something i think about a lot because i feel like she actually sees his potential to do good. which is nice but tragic because he doesn't see that potential in himself. like she can Tell that he also hates the games and the many ways that the mentors are being manipulated, but he'll never admit it. just too much of a risk. (he also sees *her* potential to do good, and unlike with sejanus, he respects it, since she generally tries to do the right thing in calculated ways rather than impulsively challenging the status quo. he still finds her strange and disorienting to be around since she clearly doesn't *want* to conform and be accepted nearly as much as he does.) anyway my main hc for her is that she ends up in bioengineering (NOT working for dr. gaul lmao) and is extremely good at what she does. she experiences various ethical dilemmas because she creates something that both can save lives in a unique way And is likely to be used in the games/could have military applications(?), so. idk. she struggles with that a lot because she refuses to turn away from the harm her project could cause

i also hc that lyssie stays friends with snow longer than one might expect -- i think she's surprisingly open to feeling (and acting on) compassion for people she knows she can never fully trust. and she's often been viewed as, like, adjacent to capitol high society without the possibility of being genuinely accepted into its ranks, so she doesn't tend to trust a lot of people. she tends to like or at least be curious about a lot of people, though, and she doesn't see that as contradictory. she keeps her distance when it's necessary, and tbh sometimes when it's unnecessary. i feel like she would be one of (young politician) snow's few positive influences -- even convincing him to make good public health decisions that benefit the districts. something like that. she'd be good at laying it all out as strategically useful, etc. and then their friendship eventually falls apart as it becomes clear that snow really isn't trying to change things from the inside (while lyssie definitely is)

bonus: it seems possible that lyssie's parents know some ravinstill family secrets since they're max's doctors. make of this what you will. dr. and dr. vickers, what do you know?? whatever's going on with them and max could also have Parallels with lyssie being relatively close to snow as he gains power. much to think about

i completely 100% agree with what you’re saying about the mentors and i think you’ve brought up such an amazing point with this. i think it’s easy to dismiss the mentors as being evil/terrible people, but i truly don’t believe there’s such a thing as a fully naturally evil person (not even urban canville).

the mentors get a lot of hate and i definitely get why (and enjoy participating!) but i think a lot of people forget just how young these mentors are. of course, that may be because so many tbosas fans are so young- but 18/19 is barely an adult. it’s so easy to dismiss them as horrible because of how they acted (and definitely they deserve the criticism) but i think in doing so, we really overlook the situation they’re in. of course this bunch of elite kids who have been spoon fed propaganda aren’t perfectly ready to overthrow the entire system they know at 18 years old. especially considering they’re all traumatized from living through a literal war as children.

not to mention how dangerous it is to speak out or mess with the wrong person as a citizen in panem.

they may not have handled things perfectly or ideally, but that doesn’t mean we need to dismiss them completely. i firmly believe that all people have a capacity for change- especially when the versions we see of them are so young!

imagine being in that position! you’re barely 18 and facing graduation (which is such a difficult phase of life as it is!). you’ve lived through a war and have had to cope with the trauma of that and you’ve been fed your whole life that the reason you suffered was because of these people. then you’re told out of no where that you’re going to be assigned one of the children from the place that caused your, and everyone you know’s, suffering. you get this kid in front of you and your forced to get to know them. looking from the perspective of the mentors view (and i’m not saying i agree!), a lot of these kids prove you right by being violent and harsh because these mentors aren’t able to put themselves in the shoes of the people they view as ‘bad’.

in other cases, the mentors realize that the children really are just children and don’t deserve what’s happening. but what can they do other than offer food and try to help them the best they can? speak out? we see how things like that go in the capitol. sejanus is punished for the way he lashed out and the feed was cut when he tried to do something.

i’m not saying they shouldn’t have done more- i’m just saying it’s not as black and white as people like to think.

i’m sorry- i’ve already rambled so much but i also really want to touch on the part of lyssie! i loved what you said about her seeing coriolanus’s ability to do good- because coriolanus did have the ability to do a lot of good. he ultimately chose a different path- but the option was there. he wasn’t born an evil dictator.

i think think it’s interesting your point about why he respected lysistrata vs sejanus! i also really liked your bioengineering headcanon. i think that’s so spot on!

i’ve never thought about it- but now that you say you think she stayed friends with coriolanus longer than one might expect i completely agree! she has that compassion inside of her and she’s grown up with this person. this was one of her best friends and she cares about him- it’s not easy to just give that up. i can absolutely see her trying to hold on and hold out hope that the coryo she loved will push through and stop the madness- or that she’ll be able to influence better things in the situation. she’s aware that she’s between a rock and a hard place and does the best she can with what she’s got.

and AH that last paragraph! i had a conversation with a friend recently about a hc with the heavensbees & the phipps and all their dark family secrets and how they’re sort of forced to remain close because of all the dirt they have on each other. i could see a very similar situation for the ravinstills & the vickers!! oh that’s such an interesting point but this is already so long…but trust i am thinking!

31-32 years old | District One Escort | Suggested Face: Park Bogum

DETAILS: As this is a joint wanted request for Anna and Solomon (both played by me, I’m not going to get too detailed here as I think you can get a good feel of him from Sol’s wanted. Basically this guy is very well put together. He’s been trained in proper etiquette and how to socialize and, unfortunately, kiss ass when it’s needed. Despite that, when he’s around people he’s comfortable with (like the D1 victors and team) I could see him loosening his tie a little and being an enjoyable person to be around by cracking jokes and gentle teasing. That said, I can definitely see Anna developing feelings for him at some point, though I’m not sure how she would act on them yet. It would really depend on how things go with the stylist as well, though I feel like I lean more towards her going for this fella. Anna would like that he’s put together and knows how to present himself but that he also seems to know who he is despite the persona he has to put on at times. Likewise, I could see Kamran eventually opening up to her and telling her about his home life and how much pressure he's under, etc. So I’d really like to see where things go. And again, please read Sol’s wanted as it provides more details on history and background for this fella as I would really like him to fill both roles.

ALSO NOTE: If this role is filled as requested, the character comes with this plot and the brother plotline but also has loads of potential with the other D4 victors as well as the D1 victors. Please poke me for more information on this.

DETAILS: So this fella took over the stylist position a few years after Anna. His predecessor was something of a hard ass and pretty controlling. He didn’t really work with Anna or use any of the ideas she came up with, so it was a rough few years for her. I think this guy would be more willing to work as a team at the very least with some give and take which is fine with Anna. I could see him being sociable and easy to get along with. He probably suggests they go for drinks after work regularly and Anna would agree to. At some point, she’s going to start developing feelings for him but I’m not sure yet how she’ll act on them since he may have some competition from the escort. What I think Anna would love about this guy is that he’s genuine. He’s easy to talk to and work with unlike the last guy. He knows how to cheer her up and make her smile. I think she would find him easy to trust too, especially if his sister is working under her (I’ll get there next). So I’d really like to see this fella and see what could come of things.

DETAILS: This young lady is sister to the above mentioned D1 male stylist. I envision her loving fashion but maybe not doing so well at it. So she decided to pursue a job as a prep team member after training in whichever position she fills. I can see her being energetic and fun loving. I think she would tease people a lot out of playfulness but knows how serious her job is too, so she would know when to tone it down. I think she would have a lot of friends and enjoy socializing. It would be cute if she looked up to Anna in some way, but even if she doesn’t, I think the two could get really close. I could see Anna asking her questions about her brother and getting teased for it but in the end she would answer them and offer suggestions and advice. I just think it would be a really cute friendship and could be fun to play out. She’d be like the little sister Anna never had but always wanted – and if things go south between the two stylists, that’s some fun possible angst to explore.

DETAILS: So this lady is pretty open. I had it in my head that she could be in the fashion industry. She could be another stylist or part of a stylist team. I had originally thought she could be part of Anna's but I'm leaning towards it would be good for them to spend time apart. She could be media personnel or whatever. She's pretty open, okay. I do think it would be fun if she and Anna used to be roommates when they were younger. Anna currently has an empty extra room for guests, but I think she and BFF probably lived together for a while. The reason BFF moved out is up to you as long as it wasn't on bad terms since that would kind of defeat the purpose of being a BFF. But in any case, Anna is going to be needing her BFF to help figure her life out and be her wingwoman. So yeah. I'm also a sucker for good gal pals. Please take her and let me love her and them and yeah. I'm always happy to discuss ideas and would love to know what your thoughts are on her.
