The Tender Performance of a contract means to offer or attempt to perform the agreement… and damn did he deliver.
Tumblr media
It was fake-breakfast-date Tuesday. But Yuu’s nervousness was anything but fake.
She didn’t want to leave Grim behind on his own, so she made sure to text Azul ahead of time if it would be alright to bring him along.
“But of course,” he replied. You know, in the most unshady way he can via text.
“This better be worth it, Yuu,” Grim deadpanned as he slumped over her shoulder, “Seriously? You’re actually dating this guy?”
“Didn’t Ace and Deuce already tell you?”
“They did! And I thought they were messing with me!” He exclaimed with a prominent frown.
“And what would they gain from lying about this?” It was another stupid question from her, given that Ace would probably pull this type of prank on Grim.
“Because this is absurd!! It sounds like a lie! It sounds fake!!” He exclaimed louder, practically yelling into her ear. “Azul?! Seriously?! You’re dating him?? You agreed to date him?!”
She sighed, “Grim…”
“No— not even that! I can’t believe I had to hear this from Ace and Deuce first! We literally live together! How come I never heard about it?”
She felt guilty, but Grim was Grim. He’ll come around eventually.
“We tried to be discrete,” she simply replied.
“Man…” he sighed, “whatever, it’s probably none of my business who you date. Wish it was a better person though.”
“What’s wrong with Azul?”
“That’s such a stupid question,” he rolled his eyes, “like you weren’t there when he scammed us, or when he overblotted.”
Despite how he normally was, Grim knew Yuu well. They both knew each other well. Which was why she didn’t know whether to reveal to him her contract with Azul. However…
One of the terms stated in her contract with Azul was that only the two of them were to know the complete and clear details of their contract, and under no circumstances are they to tell anyone else.
The Leech twins probably already knew. While she knew that Azul wouldn’t tell them due to their contract’s terms, the twins were smart enough to know what had conspired between them. They didn’t need details to know everything when they were involved behind the scenes.
It took the whole night for her to process the fact that she would be fake-dating Azul for a while. It was Monday yesterday, and she was now on her way (with Grim) to one of her breakfast dates with Azul. One out of…well, many. Maybe.
She didn’t exactly discuss an expiration date, but Yuu had a feeling that things would calm down a bit when Azul’s end of the contract would be fulfilled.
That being said, she didn’t exactly have enough time to psychologically prepare for the experience of having breakfast with Azul as his…partner. Will the Leech twins be there as bodyguards? Will it just be the two of them with Grim third wheeling???
She hoped she was keeping a good exterior, because her mind was a train wreck.
Yuu didn’t expect much from the breakfast date aside from the subtle awkwardness between them. But for some reason, she didn’t expect him to be early…
Really early. He looked like he had been there for a good several minutes before she arrived.
“He’s early,” Grim said, speaking exactly what was on her mind.
She approached the Octavinelle Housewarden, who was seated at one of the empty tables. He was looking at his watch when she tapped his shoulder.
“Hey,” she greeted him with a small smile, “Good morning.”
“Good morning, Yuu,” he stood up from his seat with a polite smile before turning to the cat-like monster on her shoulder, “To you as well, Grim. Good morning.”
“Yeah yeah mornin’,” Grim said rather dismissively. “Didn’t think you’d actually be here.”
“Who do you think I am?” Azul frowned, dismayed by Grim’s remark, “I’m not one to ditch on dates, you know?”
“Don’t go thinkin’ you can drag my hench-human around just ‘cuz she agreed to go out with you!”
“Why, I would never think of doing such a thing!” Azul exclaimed, “Courtship is a consensual agreement. I asked for her consent and she agreed.”
Yuu sighed and looked down at Grim, “Come on now, Grim. Enough of that, didn’t you say you were hungry?”
“We should get some breakfast now,” Azul looked over at the buffet. “It’s still early, but the cafeteria will get filled up by students soon, so we should hurry up.”
“Sounds good to me!” Grim suddenly cheered, his mood lifting up at the sound of food.
She noticed the small quirk of Azul’s lips as they ordered their food.
“What will you two be having?” Asked one of the chefs.
“I’ll have two pieces of buttered toast and black coffee,” Azul replied.
Her eyes scanned the food at the cafeteria concessionaire before adding, “I’ll just have some Omurice, a glass of water, and a carton of chocolate milk.”
“I’ll have this, and this, and that grilled fish over there, and—“ Grim got off her shoulder and suddenly started pointing at a bunch of dishes.
“Hey! Calm down that’s too much!” Yuu scolded him, “Just limit it to two dishes!”
“We’re gonna have a full day today! I gotta make sure I don’t go hungry in between you know!”
“We still have lunch, you’ll be fine!” She stressed. “Ugh… seriously.”
“Why do you have to worry? Isn’t Azul paying for all this?” Grim asked, looking genuinely confused.
What?
“Huh?” She gaped at him, “What?! No! That’s not how it works!”
She looked over at Azul, only to find him already pulling out enough thaumarks from his wallet to pay for their meals.
“Woah—“ she placed a hand on his and stopped him, “what are you doing? You can’t pay for my stuff.”
“I can’t?” He blinked, looking just as confused as Grim.
“No!” She retaliated, “just ‘cause you’re a dude it doesn’t mean you have to pay for my meal.”
“And why not?” Azul asked.
“Well… it’s just… you don’t have to, okay?” She then leaned closer to him to whisper, “that’s not the kind of fake-dating relationship that I want.”
“Yuu,” he said, rather seriously, “this isn’t about me being a… ‘dude’—“ he cringed slightly at the word, “—you’re saving money aren’t you? It’s also part of our contract’s terms.”
“But you don’t have to pay for everything,” she said with a groan. It’s precisely because of this kind of thing that I’m saving money.”
“What do you mean?”
“Listen, just…don’t, okay?” She fiddled at her own sleeve, “it’s just, I don’t like relying on people when it comes to simple things like this. I definitely don’t want to become indebted to you more than I already have…”
Azul stared at her for a moment, making her more nervous. She hoped that she wasn’t breaching anything in their contract.
Yuu found it hard to rely on others, even when it comes to things as simple as paying for her food. She didn’t want to come off as helpless, or as someone who couldn’t provide for herself. Even before she came to NRC, she was used to getting by on her own, and she didn’t really need anyone’s help. She’d rather be the helper than the helpee… y’know?
“Then… just think of it as proof.”
“Huh?”
“Grim doesn’t seem to believe that we’re together. A lot of your friends don’t seem to believe us either,” he explained, “If I do this for you, then they won’t question the credibility of our relationship.”
“But—“ she paused for a moment, realizing that she hadn’t exactly told most of her friends the “status” of her relationship with Azul. Most of them (like Leona, Vil, and Riddle, for example) probably wouldn’t believe them, they knew Azul well enough after all.
They weren’t close, but they knew Azul and his tendencies.
I wouldn’t peg Azul for the type to blackmail a girl into being in a fake-relationship though… she thought.
“Do— do you think they’ll believe it?” she hesitantly asked.
He moved…closer, his breath tickling her cheek, “Do you think I would give just anyone anything without a price?”
Right. They don’t know their act. If they simply see Azul being generous to her, like a boyfriend would be, it would be believable enough. He wasn’t that kind after all.
He’s a little complicated, though.
“I wouldn’t be a good boyfriend if I didn’t at least try to pay for our meal,” he said, louder this time, enough for Grim and anyone nearby to hear.
“Come on, Yuu!” Grim encouraged her with a mischievous smile as he stood on the concessionaire counter. “Just let your boyfriend treat ya!”
She bit her lip, still uncertain. Even back when she was in a relationship— a real relationship, she didn’t like leaving this kind of thing to her partner. Even more so with a guy she’s fake-dating now.
“Is there a catch though?” She asked him quietly.
“None,” he replied, leaning down to whisper again, “this is just to honor our contract. We must look convincing enough, especially to your dorm mate.”
She bit her lip and hesitated. Grim ate a lot, and just while they were talking, he not-so-secretly added a cookie and a piece of coffee bread to Azul’s tray.
“…alright,” she finally relented before nodding over to Grim, who cheered.
After that whole back and forth (and the whispers), they sat at an empty table, Azul sliding next to Yuu, while Grim ate happily across them.
“Eat slowly, you’ll choke,” she warned him.
“Yeah yeah,” she lost him. He was too busy munching on his free meal to pay attention to whatever she was saying.
“Watching him eat all this gives me heartburn,” Azul said with a sigh, picking on his own food.
She shook her head before turning to him, “Grim tunes out the whole world when he’s this hungry.”
“I can only imagine how much you go through to feed this…creature.”
She shrugged, “I’m used to it. Anyway…” she leaned in closer to him, letting Grim wander off into his own world as she said in a low voice, “So, where were you born? Did you live in the Coral Sea your whole life or…?”
He raised a brow after taking a sip of his drink, “Is this one of your green-card marriage interview questions?”
His lips quirk up when she giggled, seemingly pleased with himself for making her laugh.
“I’ve lived in the Coral sea my whole life,” he replied, “The Atlantica Memorial Museum is but only a quarter of the whole area. There’s much to see there, but I’m not sure if it’s something you’ll enjoy.”
“Why not? I happen to like the sea.”
“I recall you saying that the sea is scary.”
“But it’s interesting,” she shifted on her seat to get comfortable. “Back in my world, more than 80% of the ocean has never been explored, mapped, or even seen by humans. Literally a great number of stars and planets has been explored more than the ocean floor! Isn’t that insane?”
“Hard to imagine, as a merfolk, that is,” he said. “If you’re so interested, then perhaps I should take you on a date somewhere in the Coral Sea someday…”
With the way he spoke, Yuu almost thought he was serious. But Grim was right next to them, and, with the cafeteria slowly filling up, who knows who could be listening in on them.
“That would be nice,” she said softly, feeling kind of shy all of a sudden.
He smirked, sensing her shyness, “Perhaps I can take you to my mother’s restaurant.”
Okay, now she was sure he was teasing her. Yuu didn’t want to go as far as to meet his mother. This was only a one-time fake-dating thing, and the last thing she wants is to extend the lie to Azul’s parents.
She rolled her eyes before saying, “I did hear from Jade that your mother runs a restaurant in the Coral Sea…”
“Yes, it’s a very popular restaurant. If you ask any local for directions, they would probably take you there themselves,” he spoke with a hint of pride.
She giggled, “I see where you get your business side from. Does your mother know you’re running mostro lounge here at school?”
“She invested in it,” he smiled, “and of course, every time I visit I show her documents of our profit— to show her its success.”
Wow. It was kind of weird to imagine that he had— or has, she’s clearly still alive— a mother. A family. You know… all those warm homey stuff before he became a tall, (handsome) intimidating, infamous cafe manager.
“She must be really proud of you,” she said.
“Naturally.”
“And your father?”
“Which one?”
She blinked, “Shit, you have two?”
“My biological father and my stepfather,” he answered, “both of my biological parents got divorced when I was young, and my stepfather was my mom’s divorce lawyer. Well… you can imagine what happens next.”
“Huh… I actually didn’t expect that,” she muttered, “Did you learn contracts and stuff from your stepfather then?”
“You’re smart. Yes, he taught me all about them,” he replied.
“I don’t know if I should thank him or not,” she sighed, “do you see your biological father often?”
“He calls every now and then to see how I’m doing, but other than that, very rarely,” he replied. Yuu wondered if it was a sensitive topic, but Azul didn’t seem bothered by it at all.
She looked over at Grim, who was now chugging on a mug of water. He inhaled his food like it was nothing.
“Well that was fun,” she said when she finished the last of her food.
“Does breakfast end here?” Azul asked as he watched her clean up her plate.
“Well I wouldn’t want to be late, and Grim might insist on more food if we don’t leave soon.”
Azul checked his watch, “We still have lots of time.”
She stabbed her straw into the carton of milk before taking a small sip, “Yeah but our classrooms—“
“Where were you born?”
She blinked at him. Oh, did he want to get to know her too?
Knowing Azul, it was likely for the sake of getting information about her, but truthfully, she would have to disappoint him. There was nothing remarkable about her, after all.
“In another world.”
He rolled his eyes, “I knew that, but where?”
“You wouldn’t know either way.”
“It would still be nice to know,” He insisted.
She pursed her lips, “Yokohama, Japan. I moved to Tokyo for college though.”
“Tokyo? Is it another city?”
“It’s the capital of Japan, my home country,” she replied.
“And why Tokyo?”
“My dream college is in Tokyo. It’s a little difficult to get in it, but I got a scholarship in the end, so all is good.”
His eyes widened slightly, “A scholarship? You must have worked really hard.”
“Not having a social life helps sometimes.”
He chuckled, “And what were you going to take?”
“Visual Communication,” she said, “there’s a master’s degree program too, so if I do exceptionally well in my undergraduate degree then I’ll hopefully be chosen for another scholarship for the masters program. Which I REALLY hope I get.”
She internally groaned at the thought of all those sleepless nights in high school, trying to keep her grades up while balancing odd jobs. She knew she would have to work twice as hard in college, given that college means more work, more brain power, and more money. Next time she would have to work night shifts more often.
“Your parents must be quite proud of you for getting that far, right?”
Yuu froze for a moment before giving him a stiff smile, she didn’t really want to think about it too deeply. It had already been years, after all. No use on dwelling in the past.
“Speaking of, what are your parents like?”
“Dead.”
Azul nearly choked on his black coffee. “I’m—“ he coughed a couple of times and composed himself, “I’m sorry—“
She smiled and shook her head, “It’s fine.”
It wasn’t that much of a sensitive topic to her anymore, honestly. In fact, the way she responded to him so bluntly was kind of funny. Like an incorrect tumblr meme or something.
“I…I see,” his face was in its neutral expression— the kind that often made her nervous. It wasn’t that he looked scary or anything, he actually looked somewhat professional.
He really is handsome… she thought shamelessly. Honestly, he looks like one of those serious-looking CEOs from one of those K-dramas or manhwas.
She studied his face as he silently stared at her. It made her a little uncomfortable, both his silence and the fact that he looked so focused on her face as if he was trying to unearth every single little secret of hers.
“Prefect?”
She flinched at the sudden voice as she looked away from Azul.
“Riddle!”
Standing before their table was the Heartslabyul Housewarden, accompanied by his usual retinue, that being Trey, Cater, Ace, and Deuce.
“Woah! So the rumors were true!” Cater beamed at the sight of the unexpected couple, “You guys really are dating.”
“Why do you sound so surprised?” She asked him, “Weren’t you the one who took a photo of us?”
Cater raised both his hands in mock surrender, “Hey now, don’t get mad at me! How could I not when it was the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen that day?”
Ace made a disgusted look, “Ugh, seeing you two make those googly eyes at each other is so cringey. Glad I’m not Grim.”
“Hey, don’t be mean!” Deuce elbowed Ace before smiling down at the Prefect. “But…Ace is kind of right though. You guys look really close.”
“It’s only natural,” Azul spoke up first as he pushed his glasses up, “She’s my girlfriend after all.”
Riddle made a funny face at the word “girlfriend”, and yet he remained strangely quiet.
“Wow, I really didn’t expect this from you, Azul,” Trey chuckled, albeit rather awkwardly, “Then again, you’re always ambitious— I guess it’s no different when it comes to love, huh?”
“Speaking of, how long has this thing been goin’ on?” Cater asked. “It’s kind of sudden. I can’t tell if you guys are just that good at hiding it or you had to blackmail Grim to keep it under wraps.”
“Hey!” Grim pouted, “For the record, I didn’t know about it either until Ace and Deuce told me!”
“What?! For real?!” Cater looked quite appalled at the revelation. “Dang! No wonder we didn’t know about it… Grim isn’t exactly the best at keeping secrets, you know?”
Grim snarled at Cater’s remark.
“How long have you two been… seeing each other?” Riddle asked reluctantly as he eyed them.
Riddle always remained suspicious when it involved Azul and the twins, that was the only reason Yuu could come up with when she saw the scrutiny in his eyes as he looked at the two of them.
It made Yuu quite nervous. She had been friends with Riddle for quite some time now, and it made her feel just as guilty to lie to him like this. Aside from that, however, Riddle also had an acute sense of responsibility and justice. If he felt something was amiss, he would surely look into it, just as he did during the incident with Savanaclaw.
As though sensing her apprehension, Azul placed his hand on top of hers, and it was…weirdly warm. He was always warm, and it was comfortable…for some reason.
Damn, leave it to a touchstarved girl to feel warm about Azul.
“For a while,” Azul replied with an amiable smile as he held her hand on top of the table— a sign of their relationship. “But if you’re curious of the specifics, we’ve been seeing each other for over a month and a half.”
Azul gave her a look and a soft smile.
Right, okay. So that’s their story. A month and a half of “secretly dating”.
“I’m sorry we kept it from you guys…” She suddenly said, “We just… wanted a little privacy, you know?”
Riddle stared at their intertwined hands without a word.
“Why apologize?” Trey spoke up instead, “you guys did nothing wrong. Besides, it’s probably Cater’s fault that your peace was interrupted.”
“Hey!” Cater looked at Trey in horror, “how come I’m the only one to blame here?! You were there too!”
Azul chuckled, “It’s not a problem at all. In fact, I think it was a good thing, for the both of us. We don’t have to keep hiding it any longer.”
He turned to her, “Are you finished eating?”
“Huh?” She looked down at her now empty plate, “Uh, yeah…”
“It seems that Grim has finished as well,” He stood up and stretched his hand out in front of her.
“Shall I walk you to your classroom?”
She ignored the stares of disbelief from her friends as she took his hand, “Of course.“
“We’ll be off now,” Azul looked at the five Heartslabyul students with his signature smile, “I hope you have a good morning.”
“I’ll see you guys later!” She exclaimed, “let’s go, Grim!”
Her furry companion hopped off his seat and followed the couple as they walked hand-in-hand out of the cafeteria, leaving behind several stunned students in their wake.

[The Boyfriend Contract] Ch. 1 - The Cost of Opportunity
This is The Boyfriend Contract series, Chapter One. Inspired by The Love Hypothesis and The Business Proposal. Azul Ashengrotto x fem! Yuu (reader) You can view this on ao3. Ch. 2
Tumblr media
Opportunity Cost in economics is defined as the highest-valued alternative that is sacrificed when making a decision-- in this case, it's my dignity... and possibly my freedom.
Tumblr media
In Yuu’s defense, it was his fault.
She was supposed to be aiming for his cheek, if only he hadn’t turned his head to look at her, she wouldn’t have accidentally kissed him on the lips after claiming to some obsessed guy that she was dating him.
But she had to make it look natural, so deepening the kiss was the only way to go.
Thank the Sevens that Azul was a good actor— after hearing her ridiculous claim and feeling their lips together, he couldn’t look like the fool in the situation, so he adjusted himself to her kiss. His tense shoulders lowered, making it look like he was somewhat relaxed and he leaned closer to her. The kiss felt awkward, uncomfortable, fucking painful— but some delusional and lonely ass part of her thought it felt somewhat nice. Had Azul always been this tall? Although she was shorter than almost everyone in NRC (Riddle and Epel included), she had to tiptoe even further and crane her neck just to deepen the kiss, and that was kind of hot—
Nope. No no no no NO. She shouldn’t be enjoying this, not when she’s literally kissing one of the biggest red flags in all of NRC.
When the pain in the ass was gone, she pulled away— giving him the chance to finally stare at her in disbelief.
“…Did you just…?”
Simply hearing his voice made her want to jump into a ditch and die right there, but since they were still surrounded by people, she had to pull him outside and into some secluded corner before—
“I’M SO SORRY!”
He flinched as she bowed deeply, apologizing with all her remaining energy. As much as she wanted to bury herself six feet under, this was reality, and reality states that she couldn’t do that.
Maybe not now.
She heard him clear his throat. Maybe he was disgusted? Repulsed? She doesn’t know what her current relationship status was with Azul, though she had called him a friend once, she wasn’t really sure if he saw her that way.
“Can I get an explanation?” His voice sounded the way it normally was. Serene, like ocean waves on a nice summer day. The kind you can relax to, and it was suave, somehow. Befitting of a handsome businessman like him.
Did she just say ‘handsome’? Did she just think ‘handsome’?
Well. In all honesty, it was the truth. She was sure that anyone could admit that. If she didn’t know him personally, she might have been attracted to him. Azul was no average face after all— and if he was, he would be the “super handsome” average type.
“I—“ She stood up properly as she covered her face. It was hot. Her face was hot. Or maybe her hands were just cold. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“Is...that so?” His words drawled on as he looked at her skeptically, or uncertainly, she actually didn’t know. Normally she could read people well, but her brain was too messed up to understand what his face was trying to do. “Perhaps you can explain to me what’s going on?”
Ah, so he was trying to discern why the fuck she just kissed him. Easy enough.
“Well, um…”
Okay, not easy enough.
She suddenly remembered that this was Azul Ashengrotto she was talking to. If she decided to vent to HIM of ALL PEOPLE about a guy who wouldn’t leave her the hell alone, he would have taken the kiss as leverage for him helping her, and in turn, make her feel indebted to him for allowing her to use him to get away from a suitor.
Everyone knows that there will always be a catch when someone becomes indebted to Azul.
“Look,” She sighed, “No offense but this is really none of your business.”
He stared at her for a moment before nodding, returning to his ‘serious businessman mode’ (that’s what she and her friends called it), “I understand.”
She sighed, one of relief this time. She wanted to just walk away and forget everything.
“I suppose I’ll just go back to school and file a complaint on sexual misconduct with academic peers.”
She nodded, “Yeah, okay I’ll— wait…what?!”
“I’ll be on my way.”
“WAIT!” She grabbed his hand to stop him from walking away. It was easy enough for him to shrug her off, but he didn’t. Instead, he actually stopped and turned back to look at her, as though to consider her desperation.
“Explain the kiss.”
She groaned, letting go of his hand in order to fiddle with her own. Even if she ran away from him now, he would investigate her matter later. No one kisses Azul Ashengrotto out of nowhere, after all. Unless you want to be in complete debt to him or…you know, in love with him. Highly unlikely. For her, at least.
“Kelvin Watson,” She told him.
He raised a brow, giving no indication of knowing the name.
“He’s a regular in the cafe I work at during the weekends.”
“It’s Friday today.”
“Yeah, I know, but I told the owner in advance that I would be able to work today since classes ended early and he needed more hands. Anyway, I came to work today and for some reason, Kelvin knew I was going to be there. He always seems to know whenever I’m there, and the owner says he only goes to the cafe during the weekends, aka during my shifts. Isn't that kinda weird??”
He nodded slowly as if to process every word she uttered.
“He was nice at first, really sweet and all that. But then he tried to court me, and I’m not really into that whole dating scene right now —school, Grim, trying to get back to my world and all that— so I rejected him. But the guy just wouldn’t get the memo and kept trying to ask me out whenever he had the chance.”
He just…stared at her.
“And…what does that have to do with me?”
“I— ugh—“ she covered her face, dragging her hands down in exasperation, “After my shift ended earlier he tried to ask me out AGAIN and I was so sick of his advances that I got desperate, and I—“
She hesitated for a bit, only to continue when Azul’s eyes narrowed.
“…I saw you come in and thought to pretend that you were my boyfriend or something to drive him away since you were a familiar face, so I… I didn’t really think?”
“Obviously,” He muttered under his breath.
“Hey! I was only supposed to kiss your cheek, okay? I didn’t know you were suddenly gonna turn your head!”
“And your instinct was to continue kissing me?”
“I just—! I was trying to make it look natural! It’s not like I wanted to kiss—“ She felt her cheeks heat up at the memory, and she tried desperately to shake it from her head. “Listen, I’m so, so, so sorry about that, okay?”
“Are you really?” He crossed his arms.
“Please don’t report me,” She pleaded as she looked up at him, “I really meant to just go for your cheek. I’m sorry if I made you really uncomfortable…” and please don’t drag me into a contract.
Now that she had the time to think about it a bit better (without the stress of having an obsessive boy trying to get her attention), she realized the abomination of her situation. She really had just grabbed a random guy from her school, claimed she was dating him, and kissed him on the lips (even though it wasn’t her intention).
Not to mention, this guy was literally on the list of top students not to mess with unless you wanted a death wish (or everything you cherished taken away from you). Notorious for his elaborate and sly schemes, his greediness for money, and his perfectly put-together demeanor that made him appear like an angel. It doesn’t help that he was blessed with such a handsome face—
Ugh. There she was again.
There was no excuse for what she had done. She had practically harassed him by kissing him without his consent, intentional or not, so he had every right to report her if he wanted. Knowing Azul though, he would do anything to make sure he gains the upper hand in the situation, even if it cost her her time.
(One thing, however, is that she knows that she would agree to it as long as it didn’t involve handing him Ramshackle Dorm. Because at that point she will actually beat the shit out of him if he pulls that shit again.)
“No, I’m sorry. You have every right to report me… intentional or not, I’m sure you felt uncomfortable. I just… I didn’t…” She just wanted to go back home and sleep, maybe forget about the whole thing. “Look, I’m going to leave now, okay? Thanks and… I’m so, so, so, so sorry.”
She turned on her heel and ran away, leaving the Octavinelle housewarden in his own thoughts.
She sprinted through the streets, passing by stalls, shops, passersby, and some students from Night Raven who were still in their uniforms. She ran past a middle-aged lady walking her dog, a classic red car zoomed past her, and suddenly the next bus stopped at the station where she arrived just in time.
She made sure to sit at the very back, ignoring every other passenger as she pulled out her headphones and proceeded to lose herself in her own thoughts and guilt.
What a shitty day.
Unbeknownst to her, Azul Ashengrotto was still standing right where she left him— thinking about her. Her eyes, her red cheeks, her predicament, her cute face, her soft, soft lips… And the things she told him when they were in the Atlantica Memorial Museum…

Ch. 2 - The Economics of Rumors
This is The Boyfriend Contract series, Chapter 2. Inspired by The Love Hypothesis and The Business Proposal. Azul Ashengrotto x fem! Yuu (reader). You can view this on ao3.
Ch. 1 | Next chapter
Tumblr media
In most cases, the economic rumor makes consumers dubious of the product's type, quality, and effects on health, so it can be quite an issue... but rather than an issue, he saw it as an opportunity. To me though, it's a nuisance.
Tumblr media
It was foolish of her to believe that everything would be A-Okay after Riddle's overblot. Aside from the usual NRC mishaps (that she somehow got used to), she thought she would be able to live through her first year without any more major issues, maybe live long enough for her to get back home.
But then the Spelldrive incident happened, then the Octavinelle incident, then the Winter break incident, and then more incidents, and then the dreadful, gut-wrenching, absolutely breathtaking (not in a good way) kiss incident. Of all the goddamn incidents-- she did not expect any of them to involve a kiss.
(No. Vil's kiss on her cheek during the Styx incident does not count.)
She knew Azul well enough that he didn't like to involve himself with irrelevant matters unless it benefited him in some way. So even if she had some sort of obsessive guy chasing after her, she'd have to offer him something worthy enough for him to help her.
She hadn't received any message from him so far, and the Leech twins hadn't arrived at her doorstep yet, so... she assumed she was safe. For now.
Unless, of course, he actually did file a complaint for sexual harassment, in that case, the Headmage would have been the one at her door by now.
Yesterday's events had taken up more energy from her than she realized, so she contacted her boss and called in sick. Thank heavens he was kind, almost fatherly, and told her to rest until she felt better. She should have felt guilty for lying, but she was too exhausted to feel anything. She didn't really want to deal with any people right now.
However, as much as she enjoyed days off, Yuu became extra restless when she had nothing to do. Because doing nothing meant her mind was free to go in different directions, and that direction most often went downhill. There had to be something she could do, even if it was small or insignificant, anything to make her think of anything else other than what she didn't want to think about.
She had done as much as she could. She washed the dishes, did the laundry, cooked increasingly unsettling eggs (most of them went to Grim's stomach), washed the dishes again, cleaned the lounge, rearranged her bookshelf, created a new playlist for next week, watched some videos on Magicam, read a book on meditation-- She was slowly running out of things to do when she suddenly remembered the homework they had for History of Magic, it was a paper on any chosen topic among the ones they previously discussed during the past semester. Although the deadline was still in a week, Yuu figured it would be better to start on it early.
After making herself comfortable on her couch, Yuu opened her laptop (a very generous gift from Ortho, who noticed her lack of electronics, bless that sweet humanoid boy) and began to do some light research, but got side-tracked by the string of notifications that streamed from her phone.
With a sigh, she set her laptop on the nearby coffee table and grabbed her phone. A message from...Ace? And Deuce. Ace and Deuce. And Epel. And Jack. And...holy shit.
Was everyone out to get her or something? Why is she suddenly getting messages from Cater and Riddle? Even Sebek?! Of all people???
Before she could open any of the messages, several loud knocks pounded on her door. She knew well enough who it was that she didn't bother getting up to open it, they knew to knock first before entering after all.
The door to the lounge slammed open, startling the poor girl.
"Jesus Christ!" She clutched her phone to her chest, "Ace. You scared the shit out of me! Calm down will you?"
"Calm down?" Uh oh. She did not like that voice. Ace only ever used that voice a few times on other people, but never on her. She was usually the one using that voice on him. You know, to keep him in line.
Oh, how the turns have tabled.
"You want me to calm down?" His voice was like venom. He stalked over to her, almost stomping, as Deuce-- and... is that Epel, Jack, and Ortho?!
"Uh...what's going on?" She looked at their expressions. Ace looked displeased by something, Deuce looked uncomfortable, Jack and Epel both looked unsure, while Ortho simply looked curious. "Why is everyone here?"
"Yesterday."
She raised a brow, "Yesterday?"
"Yesterday!"
She rolled her eyes, "What about yesterday?"
"Yesterday! With Azul!"
She froze. Oh no. "What about him?"
"Don't play dumb with us, Yuu," Ace gave her one of his no-bullshit looks, "What's with you and Azul? Did you make a contract with him or something? Is he holding you hostage?"
"W-What?! No! What are you even getting at?" She didn't like where this was going.
PLEASE don't say what I think you're gonna say.
"Um, Yuu, yesterday..." Deuce started rather bashfully, "Cater and Trey saw you and Azul together, uh..."
"Kissing." Ace finished, "They saw you kissing."
Is it still possible to play dumb? "Me? Kiss who?"
"AZUL!" The ginger yelled as he hurriedly pulled out his phone and showed her what was on the screen.
It was... It was her. And Azul. Kissing.
The cafe she worked at had been gaining popularity for some time now so encountering students from both Night Raven College and Royal Sword Academy was hardly a surprise.
"Cater took that," He explained, "He and Trey were supposed to visit you, but then he saw you go up to Azul and then that happened."
Oh my fucking god.
A memory resurfaced from when Cater and the others heard that the cafe she was working in was gaining a lot of attention. He promised he would drop by sometime with Trey or Riddle, and as luck would have it, it just HAD to be at the time when she...
Oh god. This is bad. This is really fucking bad. If Cater knew, then EVERYONE knew.
"Yuu..." Jack started slowly, "You're not dating Azul, are you?" He grimaced at his own question. Everyone else looked at her waiting for an answer.
She sighed. Even though the reason was going to sound stupid (which it was), she couldn't lie to them when they were looking at her like that. There was no reason to hide it anyway, after everything she had gone through with them.
It's quite a depressing story, but even in her own world, Yuu was an outcast. Since middle school, she had trained herself not to make a fuss over things she couldn't control. If no one wanted to accept her, then so be it, all she had to do was accept herself. She never let other people's opinions deter her, instead, she worked her hardest not to let it bother her. She buried herself in her work, focusing only on her academics and her part-time jobs as a way to cope with the loneliness. It all paid off since she got accepted into her dream college.
She was supposed to start university in a month, but her sudden arrival in Twisted Wonderland changed all her plans. Despite all her hard work, she had to start over again in this new world where she had nothing, knew nothing, knew no one, and as far as the law was concerned, she didn't exist here at all.
Yuu, once again, had to navigate her way through NRC alone-- until... Grim, Ace, and Deuce. Then Jack, then Epel, then Ortho...
In a way, it was like falling in love. She entered Twisted Wonderland a feral stranger, but these people accepted her, as strange and quirky as they were in their own right, she felt right at home in their little group. Even though some of them would deny it, she knew that they always got her back.
"It's a bit of a long story."
And like clockwork, Ace and Deuce sat on the same couch she was sitting on, Jack took the armchair on her left while Epel proceeded to sit on the floor in front of her, propping his elbow on the coffee table next to him, while Ortho simply sat on said coffee table. They did this in sync, with all their eyes trained on her the whole time.
She let out a deep sigh, preparing herself for a lengthy explanation. She had a lot to say to them, and one of them was the fact that she didn't tell any of them about Kelvin Watson and his persistent advances.
"Listen, I promise you guys it's not—"
"Prefect."
Fuck.
She didn't need to look at the door to know who that smooth, melodic deep voice belonged to. But just like dominos, she followed the befuddled gazes of her friends as they turned to the doorway where Azul happened to be standing.
When the fuck did he get here and why do people keep barging into my house???
"Azul," she stammered, standing up to greet him.
"I didn't know you had company," he strode over to her smoothly. Was it that natural for him to be graceful?!
"Oh, uh.."
"Did you already tell them?" He asked when she was busy mulling over what to say. What was he going on?
"T...Tell us what?" Ace was the first one to ask. Well, the bravest one to speak up first, to be painfully accurate.
"I'm sure you already suspect it," Azul said with a modest smile that almost looked...kind. If the whole contract incident hadn't happened months back she would have believed him to be innocent, and she was sure her friends would have believed the same thing too. "We didn't mean to hide it at first, but with everything Yuu and I were going through... well, I hope you understand."
No way. There's no goddamn way.
"S-So it's true?!" Deuce asked this time, "That you two..."
"Well, we have been going on dates..." She felt a subtle but large and firm pressure on her lower back— no, not her back, but the spot between her back and her waist— steadying her, and she didn't need to turn around to know that it was Azul's hand that was precisely 3.5 inches above her ass.
Holy shit.
It was an intimate gesture that sent tingles throughout her body, nearly overriding her senses. Her friends were staring, and she was sure that they could see the heat rushing to her face in the form of the color rose pink.
How was he this good at being charming?! No, maybe it was the kiss that desensitized her— she shouldn't have to think or FEEL this way about Azul Ashengrotto of all people.
"Is everything alright?" Azul asked in a gentle voice. Azul was never gentle. He was calm, calculating, and cold, but Yuu found it so hard to think when she felt his hand rubbing her softly as if to comfort her, and when he stopped, his hand was now 2 inches above her ass. And it made her so, so, dizzy.
"Just tired, and overwhelmed," she managed to say without stuttering or fainting.
"That won't do," his brows furrowed, he was really good at looking concerned. "Come, let's have some tea at my office."
No. Nonononono— tea at his office means being alone with him, and she does NOT want to be alone with anyone right now. Especially him.
"You don't have to," she said politely, trying to hear her own voice over the sound of her beating heart, "you must be busy."
"No, please. With the disaster of a date we had yesterday, I wish to make it up to you," he continued the act (why was he even doing it in the first place?!?), "Still... I had no idea one of your admirers would be persistent enough to ruin it. I should have seen it coming." He added context. Great. Context means more questions from her friends.
"It's...it's really alright..." and please stop, my brain can't take much of this anymore.
He moved his hand straight behind her back before gently nudging her, "Shall we? I've acquired some rare sweets for you, as well."
Oh God. She loves sweets and he knows it.
"Um, I guess we'll see you then," Ace scratched the back of his neck, looking rather awkward, "Yuu, I'll text you later when, uh...yeah."
She nodded as Azul took her hand (and heavens his hands were so soft) and led her out of the dorm.
Tumblr media
"Is this some kind of joke? Are you trying to prank me or something? Do you have brain cancer? Do I have brain cancer? Is this a new business scheme where you scam a person into dating you so that you can get what you want from them?"
She ignored Jade's look of amusement as he poured tea into her cup, and Floyd's snort as he leaned against the bookshelf right behind Azul. The aforementioned boy was sitting on another couch across from her, leaning back with a deep sigh.
Why is HE looking exasperated?! Wasn't he the one who kept up the whole "dating" spiel?! Why did he do that?! I was about to tell my friends the truth!!
The walk to Mostro Lounge felt longer than it should have. Though it normally took several minutes (even shorter if you ran for your life, ideally away from it though), getting there felt like hours when you're being exposed to gawking students who happened to be passing by, and for some fucking reason there was a bunch of them on the street when they were walking. They surely noticed the hand that smoothly moved to her shoulder as well as their close proximity. She might have even seen a shocked Riddle and Trey.
"I'm not that enthusiastic about it either, okay?" He said, like, y'know, a liar.
"Then why?"
"Because I would like to make a deal with you."
"Of course you do," she rolled her eyes, picking up her teacup, "I've seen this coming. For the record, I'm not setting up Ramshackle for collateral again. I don't think I have anything significant to give you," aside from my newly acquired book collection of The Devilish Duke. A really hot and funny romcom set in the 18th century. Good shit.
"It's not Ramshackle Dorm that I want."
"Then what do you want?"
"You."
At that moment, Yuu experienced a feeling that was dangerously similar to what you call a "hypnagogic jerk", also known as that feeling where you think you're falling in your sleep, only to jerk awake, sweating like crazy on your bed and not falling off a cliff.
Yes, there's a term for that.
That sudden jerk in her body nearly caused her to choke on her tea. She quickly placed the teacup down and coughed into her sleeve several times before staring wide-eyed at Azul.
She expected to see him with his usual infuriatingly attractive smirk but...
Why is he looking away?!
"Ugh, whatever," she composed herself, taking a cookie from one of the plates. As it turns out, Azul did have some sweets in his office. Rare ones too... "The answer is no. Did you know that you're the very definition of a 'red flag'?"
"How flattering," he deadpanned. "Listen, this is important."
She sighed heavily, crossing her arms as she chewed the cookie. She stayed silent afterward, a gesture to let him continue. Azul told the twins to leave the room before speaking.
"I had a meeting with a potential business partner a couple of days ago. It was one that I was particularly looking forward to," he began, "the negotiation was doing well, but there was one setback."
She furrowed her brows, "Which is...?"
"He thought I was too young, therefore, not quite... experienced, or mature."
Her eyes widened. She wouldn't say it to his face, but despite his young age (they were both 17), Azul was already skilled in both academics and business, he gave off an air of professionalism and maturity, the very picture of a sophisticated businessman.
"That's...disappointing," she muttered.
"Very much so," he breathed out, almost exhausted. No wonder he was exasperated, that meeting must have been plaguing his thoughts the whole time...
She encouraged him to continue.
"Well, anyway, I tried to appeal to him to get an agreement, but he insisted that he just couldn't get into a business contract with someone who was 'too young'," he nearly rolled his eyes. Nearly. He didn't, but she had the feeling he wanted to. "Anyway, I looked into his background after that—"
"Of course you did."
"And I found out that before he was a successful businessman, he was the only son of the previous company chairman. When he was our age, he was the very definition of 'immature'. He was a spoiled, trust-fund, party-loving playboy who relied too much on his father's influence and money... well, you understand, don't you?"
She nodded. The guy sounded like every male lead of a typical contemporary romance. You know, the good girl x playboy trope where the playboy's whole world changes after meeting the "good girl" and he starts to change himself. She's read a good amount of those types of books.
"Due to his behavior, his father had him transferred from his elite high school to a public high school to teach him a lesson. He also had his allowance considerably lowered, so he couldn't throw any of his elaborate parties, and he was also given a bodyguard to watch his behavior."
She sucked some air through her teeth. For a trust fund boy, it must have been a hard-knock life. Not that she could really relate, she had to work for almost everything she had, so it was routine for her.
"Apparently, his behavior changed when he met his high school sweetheart and his current wife. He retired from his spoiled ways and turned into a responsible and loyal man. They've been married for twelve years now. They just celebrated their 12th wedding anniversary last month."
"Huh... that's actually quite cute," she smiled a little, thinking of how the man's life must have changed when he met his wife. Given that he met her in a public school, she must have come from humbler origins. "But wait, what does this have to do with me?"
"He's quite a family man, and he has a firm belief that a person becomes properly mature when they meet their soulmate," he shifted in his seat, leaning closer as he looked into her eyes. "He will be hosting a fundraising event next month."
"That is to say...?"
"I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend and go with me to the event. If he realizes I have a partner, he will surely consider me mature enough to pass as a potential business partner."
Wow, Azul must really want this guy's support.
"Is it really that worth it?"
"If it wasn't, I wouldn't be asking you to do this. Having a contract with him would increase the chance of opening a second establishment outside of school, not to mention Mostro Lounge greatly benefit from them due to their influence in the industry."
Leave it to Azul to think ahead. He's always been thinking of how to improve Mostro Lounge, whether it's the quality of their menu or their services.
"Have you considered getting a real date?"
"Have you considered getting a real boyfriend?"
"Touché."
She narrowed her eyes at him. Truth be told, as helpful as it was having Azul's aid with getting rid of Kelvin for a day, she didn't think there would be anything else in it for her to keep up this whole dating charade. It wouldn't have even happened if only Cater hadn't taken that picture.
She groaned, "It's gonna be difficult."
"What would be?"
"To pretend that we're dating."
"How?"
"Well... for one, isn't it suspicious that you and I weren't even that close to begin with? And suddenly we're dating?"
He shrugged his shoulders, "Not too difficult. We could simply tell them that we were trying to keep it a secret."
"Do you really think anyone would believe that?"
"Your friends certainly did."
"I'm pretty sure this agreement benefits you more than it benefits me."
"I beg to differ," he said, "I've prepared a list of benefits for you. I'm a rather generous man after all."
"Your tone is starting to piss me off."
"What?"
"You're starting to sound like Crowley."
He snorts, "Very well then. I'll try to avoid that in the future. Wouldn't want to upset my future girlfriend after all."
"I haven't agreed to your contract yet."
"Yet," he emphasized, she followed with a roll of her eyes. "Anyway, I obviously wouldn't leave any job uncompensated. As long as our contract is on, I will be at your service. I can help you with studying and homework. If you need study guides, I'll provide them for you. Given that you're already taking care of your financial needs, I'll take the initiative to pay for our dates. If you need protection from bullies and persistent admirers, I'll be one call away. If you get into trouble and you need a cover-up, I'll be there to help you."
He doesn't finish there, "Jade and Floyd will be at your aid as well. If there's anything that you need from them, you simply have to ask. If you follow my terms, I will follow yours."
She bit her lip, for a fake dating job, all those benefits sound... really nice. Considering Azul's standing and influence in Night Raven, all those would be possible.
"Still... It's not going to be easy keeping up this charade you know? No offense but considering your reputation, people are mostly gonna think that you're holding me hostage through a contract."
"We'll be fine as long as we greet each other in the hallways and walk to each other's classes. Your constant presence in Mostro Lounge will help as well."
She rolled her eyes, "Dude, people who are dating don't just walk to each other's classes together or say hi in the hallways, you know? Do you even know the first thing about dating?"
Azul clears his throat as he pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose, "I...admit I'm not an expert in this kind of field. But it's not like you can say you're any better."
She rolled her eyes. Again. "FYI, I've dated twice before, so I'd say I'm more of an expert on this than you are." No, she isn't.
Her first boyfriend was in middle school, and the only reason why she dated him was because he confessed to her in front of their whole damn class and all their classmates cooing and cheering pressured her into saying yes to him. They lasted a solid two and a half months.
The second one... was a bit more complicated. They lasted quite long, but that was because Yuu thought that they were going to last the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, that was too good to be true. Everything that seems perfect at first glance never turns out that way in the end.
"Ah... I see. Well then, what do people who are dating do?" For some reason, he sounded a little defeated.
"Well, uh, they...talk."
"About?"
"A lot of things. Their hobbies, their favorite food, the coffee they drank this morning, the shitty customer that keeps asking for the manager just because they thought the croissant they ordered tasted off and therefore demanded a refund even though they already finished it all-"
He snorted. She glared at him, "Hey, that's some serious stuff, okay? People like that are like, the worst."
He raised his hands in mock surrender, "I didn't say anything, but I do agree. Unreasonable customers are the worst. Anyway, what else do people dating do?"
"Uh...They pick apples together, frolic in fields, go on picnic dates." Sounds idiotic but—
"Sounds idiotic," Azul sighed as he crossed his arms, echoing the words in her mind, "Perhaps you should just go tell your friends that we went out and frolicked in the fields."
It was her turn to snort, "Like they would believe that."
"Like I said: idiotic."
"But hey, picnics are fun."
"Sure."
"Ahem. Anyway, aside from that..." she tapped her chin carefully as she continued to wrack her mind. "Well, people who date do a lot of things together, honestly. Hard to pinpoint but, they often eat breakfast together, get coffee together, they know each other's favorite pizza, they hug, hold hands...they...kiss."
"I can't imagine ever doing that." The twitch on his lips was enough to indicate that he was holding back a smile.
She giggled in response, "Like I would ever kiss you."
"Oh? I certainly wasn't the one who initiated it, unless I do have brain cancer and I'm misremembering things."
"I'm really sorry about that," she said, mortified at the resurfacing memory.
Surprisingly, Azul shrugs it off, "It already happened. There's no use crying over spilled milk."
What surprised her more, however, was how casual Azul seemed while they were talking. She failed to realize that at some point, he had dropped his businessman act and started talking to her like... a normal person. Like an actual Azul. It was strange, for some reason.
Silence stretched on for a few moments as she contemplated the offer once more. Dating Azul... even if it's pretend, wasn't an easy choice to make. The thought of fake dating wasn't a pleasant thought to begin with. It seemed more like a waste of time than an investment, but with all the benefits he's offering... maybe having him around would help...?
The biggest thing she was worrying about was keeping up the lie to her friends. They were her world, after all, and she wasn't ready to lose their trust just yet. But their reactions earlier were already enough to make her fall on her knees— Azul wasn't exactly the...best person to date. She was sure that Ace, Deuce, and Grim still have war flashbacks after what he made them go through during the incident with Octavinelle, and Jack trusts that she knows better than to suck up to Azul. Epel wasn't there during the incident, and so was Ortho, but she knew well enough that they were weary of him.
But...
"Well?" He suddenly spoke up, snapping her out of her thoughts. Her very... tired and messy thoughts. "I can write up the contract if you're willing to agree."
She bit her lip, "Can you...give me some more time to think about it?"
He stared at her for a moment before nodding, "Yes, of course. Take your time."

The Boyfriend Contract Series
Azul Ashengrotto x Fem!Yuu.
Yuu has been working at a port cafe in the foothill city at Sage Island during weekends and she’s been getting a lot of attention from the locals for being a sweet and beautiful girl. However, attention comes with its own consequences, and some guy who can’t get the memo has been obsessively pursuing her. Out of panic and desperation, she accidentally kisses the first familiar face she sees— and that face is none other than NRC’s most calculating businessman and well-known ass, Azul Ashengrotto. It would have ended there, with only (maybe) a small debt to the notorious Octavinelle housewarden, if it weren’t for the fact that not everyone in the cafe was a stranger… With rumors flying in the skies of Night Raven College and Azul becoming greedy for a particular business prospect, he presents Yuu with a business proposal. She was very skeptical at first, since there’s always a catch when someone makes a contract with Azul… and that catch might just be her heart.
Or: Yuu accidentally kisses the first familiar face she sees, which happens to be Azul, and shit goes down from there. Thoughts and prayers to our beloved Prefect.

Ch. 3 - Terms and Conditions
This is The Boyfriend Contract series, Chapter 3. Inspired by The Love Hypothesis and The Business Proposal. Azul Ashengrotto x fem! Yuu (reader). You can view this on ao3.
Ch. 2 | Next chapter
Tumblr media
Terms and conditions, in contracts, refer to the contractual rights and obligations of a party to any contract. Also known as that long list of word vomit you skip when downloading a new game or app— but when it comes to Azul Ashengrotto, one must lay down some sort of groundwork.
Tumblr media
A lot of unexpected things happen in Yuu’s life. A good example is suddenly waking up in a new world after accidentally falling into a nearby river upon seeing a carriage pop up behind her.
Not a fun story.
Aside from that, one of the most unexpected things she had done her whole life was what she was doing right now.
Standing in front of Azul’s office.
Floyd willingly escorted her there but left as soon as they reached the door. He gave her a toothy grin, wishing her luck before leaving her alone. Weirdo. But then again, that word alone wasn’t enough to describe Floyd Leech.
(As a magicless student, Yuu was at the very very bottom of the chain. This made her a consistent target of whoever felt like messing with her, fellow freshmen or upperclassmen. Today, however, people seemed too intimidated to do or say shit to her face, and she was sure that it was thanks to a certain rumor that spread like wildfire throughout the school.
During a joint class with a second-year class in Potionology, some students stopped stealing her vials and ingredients when she wasn’t looking, and none of them tried to put the chemicals she needed on higher, unreachable, shelves (which was a common prank they liked to pull on her, all thanks to her five-foot-three ass).
In Gym class, when one of her classmates accidentally hit her with a soccer ball, he apologized so profusely that Yuu almost felt guilty for getting hit.
In Sam’s store during a free period, when she wanted to get the last pack of her favorite Gummy worms, the student who took it from right under her nose had generously given it to her when he realized who she was.
And during lunch, no one dared to cut in front of her when she lined up, they wouldn’t touch Grim or her friends either.
“Damn, seems like being friends with a housewarden’s girlfriend comes with some perks,” Ace grinned as he took a bite of his lunch. He managed to snag one of the good items on the menu before they sold out, all because those in the line with them were too afraid to mess with Yuu.
“Guess Yuu dating Azul isn’t so bad after all,” the ginger boy added.
She felt a little guilty exploiting a huge misunderstanding, but this was Night Raven College. She will take what she could get.
And maybe… just maybe… this would help her out.)
She took a deep breath and flexed her fingers before knocking on the door.
“Who is it?” Azul’s voice, muffled by the door, called out.
“Um, it’s me. Are you busy?”
She heard a little bit of shuffling from the other side before hearing him say: “No, not too much. Come in.”
She took another breath before twisting the doorknob. He was seated behind his desk, and from the looks of it, he must have been working on some documents. He had a small stack of them on his left, indicating that they were done with, and on his right was a sheaf of papers.
“Take a seat,” he gestured to one of the couches before standing up to sit in front of her. “I take it you came here to talk about last time?”
Straight to the point, but then again, she wasn’t planning on stalling either.
“Uh, yeah. I thought about it for a bit, and…and it might actually be a good idea.”
For several reasons, the contract would get a lot of people off her back, persistent admirers, and bullies. Her friends didn’t seem to be as strongly against it as they had been during the weekend, and if they had their suspicions, they kept it to themselves.
Whatever happened during the weekend, Ace simply said that he and the others were willing to accept whatever she had with Azul as long as he wasn’t holding her hostage with a contract. They didn’t press for an explanation either, only saying that she could tell them and the others when she felt ready.
They may be troublemakers in their own right, but she loved these boys to death.
Azul had a small smile on his face, very professional, but it had a little something in it that Yuu couldn’t pinpoint, “Very well. Shall we get to the details?”
He stood up momentarily to pick up a sheaf of papers from his desk before settling back into his seat. He placed a piece of paper in front of her— the first page of their contract.
“I’ve written down the basic terms and conditions of our agreement after you left,” he said.
She tilted her head, “Did you already expect me to say yes?”
“To be honest, not really. But my foresight allows me to be prepared for any eventuality,” his face had its usual modest expression, it was as if he wouldn’t care at all if she decided to discard the whole fake dating idea.
To be fair, since it was Azul she was dealing with, she was sure he would have found another way to get the deal he wanted one way or another.
She picked up the paper and read it carefully. After dealing with his contract in the past, she learned to read all her contracts properly despite how long they might be. She made sure to look for fine prints that she might miss, just to be safe.
Once she was sure that the conditions were written correctly with no elaborate wording that may cause misunderstandings, she nodded and placed the paper back down.
“Is it sufficient for you?” He asked, “If you wish to add more to our terms, you may do so, but keep in mind that I might have to make some changes of my own as well, you know, to keep the balance.”
“The conditions are fine, and… actually, I would like to set some ground rules, my own terms, if you will.”
There was a hint of a smirk on his face, “You seem to have thought this through more than I expected you to. And here I was thinking you would thoughtlessly sign this one.”
She shrugged, “it’s standard protocol when it comes to fake-dating relationships.”
He raised a brow, “standard protocol?”
“Mhm.”
“Have you done something like this before?”
“The contracts or the fake-dating?”
“The latter.”
“Nope. I just know the trope.”
He blinked, “The what..?”
She ignored his confusion and shook her head, “Okay, first of all, you will not use our agreement as an incentive to lure my friends into a contract.”
He sighed, “I suppose I expected that. You’re strangely attached to those boys.”
“You’d know how it feels if you had people you consider precious to you, outside of business that is,” she said, waving his remark off. That seemed to shut him up. “Anyway. Second, before making any relationship-related decisions, you will always, and I mean always tell me first before deciding anything. Ask for my consent, and I’ll ask you for yours.”
“Deal.”
“Third rule,” it was going to be weird, but it was necessary. She braced herself, “No sex.”
His eyes widened as he stared at her with parted lips. He didn’t move, not even a single inch save for the way his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down. His reaction made her heart sink to her stomach, was he… was he expecting to…with her… at some point…? Was it…? Did he…?
Panic rose in her heart as she tried to stand up, “Um, I’m sorry, if you were expecting us to, uh, do that, then I’m afraid I can’t—“
“No!” Life returned to him in an instant, “No, no it’s nothing like that. I was just... surprised. I didn’t think it would be important enough to bring it up.”
Oh… then maybe she was the weirdo here.
“S-Sorry… I was just—“
He shook his head, “No, it’s alright. You’re straightforward. I wouldn’t want to do anything that made you uncomfortable. Terms like that are important for setting up mutual agreements after all…” he coughed into a gloved fist. “My apologies.”
His awkward movements weren’t hard to miss, the professional persona he had built up in front of her crumbled, and all that was left was an awkward teenage boy.
He then nodded firmly, “Okay, no sex.”
And, well, it is awkward, because she’s sitting in his office alone with him, talking about sex. Of all things.
“Yes, no sex,” she repeated.
Okay. Don’t think about it. Back to the rules.
“Anyway, uh fourth rule— or whatever. It’s not really a rule, but you can hold me accountable for it: during the duration of our agreement, I won’t date anyone else. Like real real dating. You know, to make it believable. I don’t do real dating anyway.”
He simply stared at her.
“Uh! But you can date others if you’d like!” She hastily added, “Just— just not on campus or anywhere anyone can see. It’ll look…kind of stupid.” I’ll look kind of stupid.
He shook his head, “No, it’s fine. I won’t.”
“Awesome! And if ever you do end up dating someone else, then—”
“I won’t date anyone else either.”
…Oh.
“Oh,” she said, rather dumbly. Well, what did she expect, honestly? If Azul was interested in someone else, he wouldn’t be asking her to fake-date him for a potential business contract. “Okay…cool, cool.”
“Anything else?”
“One last rule,” and the most important one.
He nodded, staying silent to let her continue.
“We must never fall in love with each other.”
Something changed within Azul when she said that. She couldn’t exactly pinpoint what it was, but even though the only thing that changed outwardly was the way his eyes widened a fraction, something with his aura, his being, wavered.
It’s like the way the music changes-- when the vibe of the song changes the atmosphere. It’s the way the air shifts when you realize it’s going to rain soon. It’s… well, it’s the way the look in his eyes changed into something she couldn’t comprehend.
It’s weird, but it’s there.
“Pardon?” He finally spoke.
“I know it sounds weird, but… well, I feel like it’s necessary to say it, as unlikely as it is to happen,” she replied.
It wasn’t as though Azul was unattractive, the complete opposite actually. He was handsome, intelligent, talented, ambitious— he’s probably a lot of other girls’ dream boy. Maybe in the future, he’d find someone for him, but they weren’t there yet. They were right here, right now.
Right now isn’t the time for her to fall in love, not when she has to go home, to the world where she belongs.
Right here isn’t the time for him to fall in love. No… he was ambitious, and she knew that he knew the time wasn’t right for him yet. Not when he’s chasing too much.
Right here, right now, isn’t the time for the both of them.
“Don’t fall in love with me, and I won’t fall in love with you,” she continued. “If any of us starts feeling anything similar to love for each other, we must terminate the contract immediately.”
“Understandable,” he said, pushing up his glasses. They reflected the light well enough that she couldn’t see his eyes for a moment. “No falling in love.”
“No falling in love,” she nodded.
“Are those all?” He asked.
“Yup! All five of my terms. Well, if you can even call them that… uh, is there anything else you want to add?”
“No. I’ve already put down what I wanted, which is everything you’ve initially read.”
“And you’ll consider my terms?”
“There’s no consideration needed. Your terms are reasonable, so I must comply.”
“You’re…weirdly compliant with this.”
“It’s a mutual contract, is it not?” He said questioningly, “While I don’t need to use my signature spell, a contract is a contract.”
And he stays true to them…
“Alright! Then I must keep up my end of the bargain. So how should we go about this? Should we start getting coffee together or something?”
“Coffee? Like coffee dates?” He asked.
“Oh? So you’re familiar with them? Have you ever had a coffee date, Azul?” She asked teasingly.
He frowned, “You know full well I haven’t.”
“I know. I was kidding,” she giggled, “it’s nothing to be ashamed of either. Well, unless you were me on my first date.”
He raised a brow, looking rather interested, “Oh? Sounds like a nice conversation topic--" he smirked, "--for a date."
“Well too bad, there are other more interesting topics,” she rolled her eyes, “when are you free? Since you’re a housewarden, your mornings must be packed.”
“We can have coffee and breakfast together in the cafeteria on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Occasionally Fridays too, but I will have to contact you on that every now and then,” he explained.
“Tuesdays and Thursdays then,” she said with a smile, "And maybe Fridays."
“Is that a deal?” He extended his hand.
With a deep breath, Yuu took his hand. His fingers wrapped around hers like tendrils, and he shook them, firmly and gently.
She noticed they were warm, big, and...... gloveless.
“It’s a deal.”
