The Awardist - Nicholas Galitzine & Taylor Zakhar Perez
I have to write down the best bits and record my thoughts while listening to this because I am completely losing my mind over what is our first real interview with the boys that was recorded in real time.
27:55 - right off the bat we got a great inside joke/reference from the host that had me cackle
28:19 - taylor being happy to see their faces and nicholas immediately shutting him down like "well i'm not happy to see taylor's face"
28:40 - taylor joking about putting a post-in note over nick's face lmfao
29:30 - the way they don't want to talk over each other, it's giving alex's bedroom flashbacks
29:40 - nick being like "oh! oh, it's good!" when dipping into the online response when the movie released lmfao 😆
30:33 - the silence following the social media question where they were apparently nodding followed by taylor saying they were texting each other like "mate" "mate" back and forth
31:20 - THEY TALKED ABOUT THE SIGNING WARS
31:44 - nicholas calling taylor "this little fucker" had me dying cause me and @meraki-yao were literally referring to him as that in our conversation on ig yesterday
32:00 - nicholas genuinely asking taylor "what possessed you to do this?"; it's giving storage closet in the children's hospital vibes when henry's like "why do you dislike me?"
33:04 - "take it nick" immediately upon being asked the dense question regarding fans reacting to their portrayals of henry and alex, and the way that nicholas laughs and stutters makes me think that taylor totally did that on purpose to mess with him lmfao
34:00 - taylor stopping to talk to fans regardless of where he is or where he's going and specfically mentioning how meaningful it was that people have said *TW* they were contemplating suicide when they read the book/watched the movie and that it helped them 🥺
35:40 - the host referred to the film as "a coming out story", which i don't really agree with as a label because the coming out portion is an added piece of their relationship as two public figures, but their love is the actual story
36:40 - nicholas referring to the film as "wholesome and funny" made me smile so much because it truly is wholesome
37:18 - not the host making the "top to bottom" joke 😭
37:58 - nicholas and taylor have talked about their friendship with each other and how they instantly clicked; nick knew within a few minutes of rehearsal that taylor was "his buddy" 🥺
38:41 - catch me squaring up with everyone who has made nicholas self conscious and self deprecating about doing so much intimacy work on the screen that he refers to it as "basically his thing" like that's all he's recognized for; i am so ready to punch some motherfuckers 😡
39:10 - "it's so fun now, seeing my mate at all these awards and stuff"; catch me fucking crying
39:24 - not taylor misremembering the "nicholas or joey" question as "who was the better kisser"; he totally combined the "is nicholas a good kisser" question with the "who has your heart tonight" question
40:05 - taylor talking about matthew's background in theatre and how they got to actually rehearse with each other; i will never stop being insanely grateful that matthew is a theatre guy
40:55 - the way i said "oh my god" out loud because i was so excited by the question
41:14 - improvised the "physicality" of the store room; i.e. they just fell on top of each other and clamored around 😂
41:32 - the way i literally gasped so hard that i started coughing when nicholas called taylor "tay", i am not even fucking joking, that was so fucking cute 😭
43:42 - fucking wheezed upon realizing where the question going
44:02 - the knowing way taylor was like "i will take this one" lmfao
45:10 - not me going so red from second hand embarrassment 🫣
45:44 - taylor bringing the jockstrap that nicholas wears in bottoms, and nicholas immediately adding "i won't even go into mary & george" 😂
47:51 - taylor finishing nicholas' sentence about matthew's direction for the cake scene; sharing a braincell lol
48:36 - taylor's dog passed away the night of the first day of filming like wow, that fucking sucks 🥺😭
49:05 - "everyone's looking at me with these sad eyes" made me so sad but then taylor said "do you want some tea?" in a terrible british accent lmfao
49:50 - nicholas complimenting and boosting taylor's performance while having such a hard time emotionally 🥺
50:49 - taylor bringing up running through the museum; i can hear the smile in his voice while talking about it 😭
51:28 - they filmed the kensington palace fight and the red room the week after nicholas got covid
52:40 - oh my god, the way you can hear nick grinning as he throws taylor under the bus for the sequel question 😂
53:30 - taylor wants a second book to base the sequel off of
54:03 - taylor used they/them pronouns for casey!! see? he knows, it was totally nerves
55:20 - it felt like it was over too soon, i desperately need more of them PLEASE 😭
This is the greatest thing that's happened in like, a month for me lmfao I am literally begging for more people to interview the boys about RWRB, I am so fucking desperate for more content of the two of them together. They are everything to me 🥺
Thanks for reading!! If you enjoyed this essay & would like to support me, you can give me a tip on my Ko-Fi! ☺️

The Awardist Interview with Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey (2024)
Tumblr media
Yes, Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey's sex scenes in Fellow Travelers consumed social media for a couple months during the limited series' run on Showtime. But the power dynamic on display wasn't just for sensationalism; it served a bigger purpose in the journey of the two closeted men.
They are also scenes that would've been difficult to put on screen just a decade ago, and the characters — Bomer's State Department official Hawk Fuller and Bailey's congressional staffer Tim Laughlin — very likely would've been played by straight men.
"I don't even know if I would have seen the script for it 10 years ago," Bomer says, laughing while seated next to his costar during a chat with EW's Awardist podcast. But the job was made easier, and "so much of my cynicism was obliterated," he says, thanks to the support of the network as well as production company Fremantle. "From the beginning, [they] were giving us notes that weren't constricting at all. They were actually really liberating," the Emmy nominee explains. "They were saying, 'No, go farther. Embarrass yourself. Go too far. Try to scare us. Try to see how far you can push it.' And that kind of permission, I felt, even bled into the acting work on set because it came from the people who were in power who could make those decisions."
Bailey, also Emmy-nominated for his work in the series, is quick to express his gratitude for the "brilliant gay stories" starring straight actors that have come before — "I would never for a second wish that I hadn't seen Brokeback Mountain or Gus Van Sant's Milk and Cate Blanchett playing Carol," he says — as well as even having the opportunity to star in Fellow Travelers.
"Had this been made five, 10 years ago, I completely believe that I would have been able to play a straight lead before I would have been able to play gay. And that's kind of wild," acknowledging the changing tides in the industry. But he also notes, "The majority of awards go to straight actors playing gay because there's this sense that that means that they're somehow brave or that they're mixing it up. And there is a bruise that, looking back now, there's a very real — and has been — sense that there aren't out gay men playing their experience," he says. "These characters, of course they're rich, of course they're complicated, of course they're exactly the sort of stories that you'd want to tell because it's so complicated, so much pain, and there's so much suffering, there's much resilience and there's much spirit in it."
That pain is on display throughout much of the series' eight episodes as they contend with McCarthyism and restrictive laws against homosexuality. But in particular for Bomer, it was episode 7, "White Nights," that he admits he was dreading the most. After a family tragedy leaves Hawk devastated, he flees to Fire Island, where his abuse of alcohol and drugs rightfully worries Tim, who travels there to find and hopefully help him.
Bomer says his nerves were routed in the big emotion switch Hawk makes during a sexual escape. "I was gonna have to go from a really drug-fueled kind of bacchanalian love scene that's really dark into the turning point for the character," he explains. "He has this tragic secret that he's trying to bury that is suddenly exposed in front of his face. And as Hawkins is want to do, when it's exposed, he attacks. And then to go from that to being able to rely on my scene partner and fall into the complete vulnerability of the character for the first time — and we didn't film those things separately, it was all one take — I knew that was going to be a scary day."
For everything Bailey experienced in the film, including the fear he had "of playing the last scenes" as Tim dies from complications of AIDS, it was a real-life scenario that reminded the actor of the horrors that queer people still experience. While in Washington D.C. for a Human Rights Campaign event in October 2023 prior to the launch of the series, Bailey, who was wearing an HRC hat, says a man in a coffee shop removed it from his head and threw it to the ground, physically threatening him before leaving when a woman started filming with her cellphone.
"It was really overwhelming and upsetting," Bailey recalls, noting the contrast between the "electric fervor" of the previous night's celebratory event. "I woke up the next day and I honestly felt like I was in a sort of montage of a B-movie because I was like, the sun was out and I was like, this is it, this is it, I get it, I get what this is about, I can see what my platform is and I can see how I can use this. [And I] went into a coffee shop and then someone threatens you and says, 'Get out of my country, you f---ing queer. If you don't do that, I'll shoot you.'"
Within a week, he called Jonathan Anderson, creative director of luxury brand Loewe, to create the Drink Your Milk t-shirt — a line from Fellow Travelers — to raise money for oppressed LGBTQ+ people around the world via Bailey's new foundation, the Shameless Fund.
"It was the most activating thing that possibly could have happened," Bailey says now, as Bomer wipes tears starting to well in his eyes. "There's a love letter I should write to the man from Pennsylvania."

I'm curious...what are your thoughts right now about Matt & Jonny and their friendship 👀
Gosh, what a question... It's hard to sum up everything that's happened.
In general, I feel (like always) that they're very "right person wrong time." They are pure soulmates, but a life together is probably not going to happen for them.
I do believe Matt fell madly in love with Simon, and that he's been right for him for a long time, but I'm not convinced he is anymore. A lot can be read from their body language, among other things. People change, and that's absolutely natural...
Also, the way some people talk about Simon and Matt baffles me a bit. Matt is an independent, grown man, not a princess, and he doesn't need someone protecting him 24/7. There's nothing even remotely cute about it.
I've never understood the nature of the affection between Matt and Jonathan, but it seems unwavering, unconditional, undeniable, joyful, deep, transformative even.
I think Jonny is the one person (now) who truly deserves Matt, because he has proven time and again that he really is there for him and supports him through thick and thin. Matt has mentioned this many times in different interviews - how Jonny was there for him on every level during FT. "Jonny was there for me physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually." (A.V. Club) Matt also said it straight to Jonny's face during the 92NY talk.
But Jonny is there for Matt outside of filming, too. Last time he proved this was during the Emmys, when Matt lost. According to an eyewitness, Jonny scooted forward in his chair, put his arms around Matt from behind and hugged him. In the selfie Matt posted (the last thing he has posted btw), Jonny holds him in a similar way. (Perhaps they took this photo during the break, when Simon was not there. There's a picture from the break where he isn't there.) Also, the beach selfie Matt posted a month ago is amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two last times they got together were magical, and so filled with love. And Jonny made Matt laugh in a primal way again, many times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they were very physically and openly affectionate with each other both times. Hugging, touching, kissing, holding hands...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Jonny has changed Matt in the relatively short time they've known each other. He's never been so soft, open, vulnerable and relaxed as with Jonny. This was especially clear during the 92NY talk, which should also be analyzed at length, but anyway. That was Matt completely out of his shell, the way we simply never see him. He was both purring like a cat and basking in Jonny's compliments, being extremely emotional and vulnerable, and showing overwhelming love for Jonny.
Tumblr media
This is remarkable compared to how Matt usually behaves. He has those walls he puts up around himself, maybe to protect himself from something (but Jonny always breaks down those walls so easily.) Ron spoke about this at the Emmys. He said Matt has a great ability to keep things hidden, while Jonny's emotions are "out there."
The last filmed interview they did together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there was the last podcast interview they did together (the very last interview they did) (The Awardist). Jonny talked about the incident when he was threatened after the HRC gala, and Matt got very distressed. He was breathing heavily and, like the interviewer said, wiping tears from his eyes. Matt said, "It's so upsetting to hear someone you love go through an experience like that, especially when they were there to support you…" to which Jonny said, "Yeah I know. Well I'd go anywhere to support you." and Matt replied, "Same!"
So they still have each other's backs, they would still do anything for each other. All this having to end now doesn't really make sense to me, it feels wrong. Are they supposed to continue being "friends" somehow? They're far beyond ordinary friends in the first place, so that wouldn't make sense either. Any thoughts?

Was re-listening to the Awardist podcast during my drawing class and this is the first time I've listened to it since the sequel announcement
And then I got to the end with the sequel question and heard Nick laugh and go "Go on Taylor" with a giggle
And I immediately went "YOU LITTLE SHIT'
These two bastards must have known at that point!!! But obviously, they couldn't say anything about it.
So Nick, the little vixen, deliberately pushed the question to Taylor, knowing full well that means they had to come up with a lie!
(if this wasn't clear, this is obviously all in good nature and playful banter)
Oh also candy: Taylor indulged him and took the question anyways : )

Saltburn (2023)
What I love about this movie is that it is a dark and indulgent satire, but also well-written and with regard to the (vague) genre it has been inspired from.
Fans of stories about yearning, of gothics with the manor being a gravitating point throughout the story, of the way Dark Academia approaches characters and relationships will see a lot of familiar things here.
I think that the movie is best perceiver if viewed from the lense of what Fennell said in her EW's The Awardist interview. Saltburn is about 1)this psychoting sort of desire and 2)with regard to what we want and how we're going to get it.
Oliver feels this sort of desire for Felix since the very beginning. This yearning is his driving force. But how is he getting what he wants?
On a surface level? He goes after the people in Felix's life. The girl that was waiting for him, Venetia, Farleigh. It's both about sex and about power with them. It is also not to make a point to Felix himself. What does he say to the girl in the beginning? For Felix it wouldn't even register. But it gives Oliver a sense of power and of conquering upon Felix's life nonetheless and that's what matters.
The deeper answer of course is that Oliver gets what he wants through Saltburn. Saltburn is this manor where real life lingers outside. It' does not really chage. Real life lingers outside. It maintains this manufactured and forcefully preserved beauty and people accommodate to fit in. Just like there is this sense of beauty and niceness about Felix, with people around him playing roles and being what they must be to remain close to him. Oliver's craving for Felix remains unconsummated in a way. Yet it manifests through Oliver's contact with the house itself as an extension of his desire for Felix (the bathtub scene, the grave scene). I think that this is a brilliant example of having a gothic satire that is extra and provocative, but with the writing choices that might raise a reaction playing a role in the actual story.
Venetia has two essential scenes to break down Oliver's character: 1)She mentions upon their first interaction that he's so 'real'. 2)She calls him out on several levels about being a moth etc. right before she meets her end. He is the real world that manages to creep in and corrupt Saltburns suspended beauty for those inhabitating it.
At the same time, Oliver's 'victory' lies in the fact that this beauty still exists for himself after the family itself is gone. His yearning has been fulfilled by owning the house of which Felix had been a reflection and through his naked victory dance within it.
Finally, an interesting thing to point out is Duncan's absence at the end. Per Fennell herself, Duncan IS Saltburn in a way. He is inspired from spirits that are part of the house in Gothic stories and he LOVED Felix and was a point of resistance to Oliver's 'corruptive force'. He was this person who kept that house preserved and running like a well-oiled machine with all its specificities. When Felix, the family and Saltburn have been 'conquered', he's gone. There could have been an explanation or a victorious scene of Oliver having him fired. But there wasn't. The last scene we see of him is when the house is signed off. In a supernatural story, this would have been the moment when the spirit of the house would be gone, and this is what Duncan is a nod to.

the category is journalists writing the intros to their pieces about their interviews with both nick & taylor:
(text version under the cut)
EW | The Awardist:
Tumblr media
Teen Vogue:
Tumblr media
GQ:
Tumblr media
EW | The Awardist:
From the moment they both enter the virtual video chat to talk about their 2023 smash-hit rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are roasting each other, throwing out playful jabs.Their friendship and connection are undeniable, and it's immediately evident that the bond they share in Matthew López's movie, based on Casey McQuiston's enormously popular book of the same name, extends off camera as well.
Teen Vogue:
Red, White & Royal Blue stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine couldn’t be less serious. In conversation, the banter is endless, the charm off the charts. They’re currently embroiled in a discussion about New Zealand vs. Australia. Zakhar Perez refers to New Zealand in conjunction with the “naur” meme and H2O Just Add Water, famously an Australian show, and it sets Galitzine spinning into laughter — before he schools his costar in the dynamic between the two countries. There’s something of a schoolboy zest, darting wherever their brain cells move them in conversation, that makes you think of the cheeky conversations had over the trash can at school, sharpening pencils over and over again to gossip. They jokingly narrate the opening of our interview, even though we’re on a Zoom: “This is Taylor and I’m done talking,” Zakhar Perez throws down, and Galitzine picks it up, “Hi I’m Nick, I’m about to start speaking.”
GQ:
Afternoon tea requires a level of decorum. But in a South Kensington hotel so posh there’s no sign outside, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine gleefully ignore the unspoken rules of etiquette when the latter pulls out his phone. “I need to find this video!” Galitzine says, feverishly swiping his screen. “I’m sorry, it’s my favourite video on TikTok.” Given the international nature of the story, we’ve been talking about accents – specifically, about whether Galitzine, who is British, had to adopt a more aristocratic inflection – when he turned the question around. “Are you Scottish?” he asked. (I am.) The revelation ignited something in his brain, and soon he was scouring TikTok. Galitzine is practically vibrating when he finally finds his prized clip. In it, two enraged young Scots lose it when a countryman claims that they pronounce “pie” as “peh.” “SHUT YOUR MOUTH, I HATE YEEEH!” one guy yells, face vermillion. It’s so, so dumb. It’s also hilarious. Zakhar Perez, 31, and Galitzine, 28, fold over and giggle, far too occupied to realise that the phone is on full blast in a tiny room filled with rich tourists. A group of suited Italians not-so-quietly mumble their annoyance from the next table, and Galitzine quickly offers an embarrassed apology.
