'Hogwarts school of Activism: Harry Potterâs Fandom for Social Change?'
Traditional notions of civic engagement often conjure images of town hall meetings, community volunteering, and grassroots political campaigns. William Galston, for instance, laments the perceived disengagement of young people, attributing it to their immersion in media and the internet (Kligler-Vilenchik et al. 2011). This perspective, however, overlooks the evolving landscape of civic participation in the digital age. Increasingly, scholars recognize that younger generations are embracing new forms of engagement, deeply intertwined with their personal interests and online social network (Kahne, Lee & Feezell 2013). Rather than being a source of apathy, popular culture and participatory platforms are emerging as powerful catalysts for youth-driven social action, enable by social media (Kligler-Vilenchik et al. 2011).
youtube
At the forefront of this shift is the rise of "fandom activism." But what exactly is fandom? More than just enthusiastic consumers of media, fandoms represent vibrant subcultures united by shared passions (Foster & Class n.d.). As noted by Leno, these communities foster a profound sense of empathy and camaraderie among individuals who connect over common interests(Leno 2024). In essence, fandom provides a modern iteration of social connection, offering a sense of belonging and collective identity, particularly in an increasingly digital world (Groene & Hettinger 2016). 1997 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, acclaim have earn the fandom; Potterheads. Today Potterheads are found all over the globe, standing in millions of stan fans.
youtube
This inherent sense of community and shared purpose within Potterheads creates fertile ground for activism(Kligler-Vilenchik et al. 2011). Leveraging their digital fluency and collaborative spirit, fans translate their passion into tangible action, mobilizing around causes that resonate with their values (Kligler-Vilenchik et al. 2011). From fundraising for charitable organizations to orchestrating online awareness campaigns, fandom activism transcends the boundaries of traditional civic engagement, harnessing the power of popular fanâs culture for social good (Foster & Class n.d.).
youtube
-Deathly Hallows Campaign-2011
The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), founded in 2005, truly embodies Foster and Classâs definition of fan activism. Taking inspiration from bookâs "Dumbledore's Army," the fictional student activist group in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) presents a compelling case study in the evolution of civic engagement, demonstrating how fandom can be a powerful catalyst for social change (Jenkins 2014). Far from a mere online fan club, the HPA strategically harnesses the digital landscape and the shared passion of Harry Potter enthusiasts to mobilize a generation of activists.
Their campaigns, often inspired by events and themes from the books, are carefully crafted to engage and mobilize fans to digital activism in their rights (Jenkins 2014). The "Deathly Hallows" campaign, for instance, mirrored the quest for Voldemort's Horcruxes, challenging fans to identify and combat real-world "Horcruxes" such as poverty and discrimination (Jenkins 2014). This approach translates fictional concepts into strong tangible actions, empowering fans to step beyond the screen and engage in meaningful change to people around them.
-Harry Potter Alliance's SocMed Hashtag Campaigns on Facebook
Beyond targeted campaigns, the HPA excels at grassroots mobilization through social media. Online forums from reddit to HPFF (Harry Potter Fan Forum) buzz with discussions, Facebook groups like Harry Potter Alliance UIUC and regional HPA groups transforming into virtual town halls, and Twitter hashtags from #BLACKLIVESMATTER serve as rallying cries. Through these digital channels, the HPA facilitates exchanges, disseminates vital information, and orchestrates collective action on a local and global scale (Jenkins 2014).
Fans are not merely encouraged to consume content; they are invited to become creators themselves(Jenkins 2014). Fanfiction, fanart, and music become powerful mediums for exploring social and political themes within the familiar context of the Harry Potter universe. This couple with social mediaâs reach not only nurtures a thriving sense of community but also allows fans to engage with activism on a personal and profound level, blurring the lines between fandom and social action whilst fostering a sense of ownership and agency among participants, making activism a more personal and empowering experience (Jenkins 2014).
HPAâssuccess lies in its strategic engagement with the existing Harry Potter fandom. Instead of creating a separate movement, the HPA taps into the shared passion that already unites millions of fans worldwide (Potter 2019). This allows them to leverage a pre-existing sense of community and shared purpose, providing a powerful foundation for collective action. By organizing campaigns and events framed within the context of the Harry Potter universe, the HPA makes digital activism more engaging and relatable to its target audience(Potter 2019).
These examples highlight the versatility and adaptability of fan activism. Whether harnessing the power of established fandoms or building new communities around shared concerns, fan activism offers a compelling model for civic engagement in the digital age (Leno 2024). By tapping into the passion, creativity, and digital fluency of young people, fan activism has the potential to reshape the landscape of social and political change.

Israel has cut water, electricity and food to Palestinians in Gaza. They are buying 10.000 M16 rifles and plan to distribute to civilian settlers in the West Bank to hunt down Palestinians. They're bombing the only way out of Gaza through Egypt, after telling refugees to flee through it, and have threatened the Egyptian government in case they let aid trucks pass through. Entire families, generations, are being wiped out and left to wander the streets hoping they don't get bombed.
Palestinians are using their last minutes of battery to let the world know about their genocide and are being met with a wall of "What about Hamas? What about the beheaded babies? Killing children on either side is bad!" even though the propaganda claims have been debunked over and over again. How cruel is it to ask somebody to condemn themselves before their last words? Or before grieving the loss of their entire families? When there's no such disclaimer to Israelis even though their government has shown over and over genocidal intent? Like who are you even trying to appease? What will your wishy washy statement do against decades of zionist thought infiltrating evangelical and Jewish stablishmemts?
Take action. Israel will fall back if public opinion turns its tide. The UK fell back on its bloody decision to cut aid to Palestine under public scrutiny. The USAmerican empire spends $3.8 billion dollars annually solely on this proxy war while its people suffer under a progressively military regime as well. News outlets are canceling last minute on Palestinian speakers while letting Israelis tell lies unchecked. Palestinian refugees are being targeted in ICE establishments and mosques are already being hounded by the FBI. France and Germany have banned pro-Palestine protests, while Netherlands and the UK have placed restrictions . You have the chance to stop this from turning into repeat of the Iraq war.
I want to do something but there's hardly anything for me to do from Brasil besides spreading the word and not letting these testimonies fall on deaf ears. I'm asking you to do this same ant work from wherever you are.

Wildlife Warriors: Youth Leading the Charge in Animal Advocacy | UNESCO Body and Mind Wellness
In an era marked by environmental challenges and the urgent need for conservation, youth around the world are emerging as formidable wildlife warriors, passionately advocating for the protection and well-being of Earth's diverse species. Armed with empathy, knowledge, and a fervent desire for positive change, these young individuals are leading the charge in animal advocacy, embodying a spirit of activism that is reshaping the future of wildlife conservation.
Education forms the bedrock of youth-led animal advocacy. With unprecedented access to information, today's young individuals are arming themselves with knowledge about endangered species, habitat loss, and the impact of human activities on wildlife. They are not merely spectators; they are informed advocates who understand the intricate connections between ecosystems and the delicate balance that sustains life on our planet.
The power of social media becomes a potent tool in the hands of wildlife warriors. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok allow youth to amplify their voices, share compelling stories, and raise awareness about the plight of animals. From viral campaigns to captivating visuals, these digital natives leverage the reach of social media to galvanize support, inspire action, and spark conversations that transcend geographic boundaries.
Youth-led conservation projects are making a tangible impact on the ground. From organizing tree planting initiatives to participating in beach clean-ups, young animal advocates are actively engaged in hands-on projects that contribute to the preservation of natural habitats. Through these initiatives, they not only address immediate environmental concerns but also foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the planet.
Advocacy extends beyond screens and projects, as youth actively lobby for policy changes and participate in conservation efforts at local, national, and international levels. Whether it's attending conferences, collaborating with environmental organizations, or petitioning governments, these wildlife warriors are determined to see tangible changes in legislation and enforcement that safeguard the welfare of animals and their habitats.
The commitment to ethical and sustainable practices is a hallmark of youth-led animal advocacy. From promoting responsible tourism to advocating for cruelty-free products, young individuals are reshaping consumer behaviors and encouraging eco-friendly choices. Through their influence as consumers, they are driving industries towards practices that prioritize the well-being of animals and the planet.
Collaboration and networking among youth advocates amplify their impact. By forming alliances, sharing resources, and collaborating on initiatives, these wildlife warriors create a united front against the threats faced by animals. The sense of community and shared purpose among youth advocates enhances their effectiveness and ensures that their collective voice is heard on a global scale.
In conclusion, wildlife warriors represent a generation of empowered and compassionate youth who are not bystanders but active participants in the fight for animal advocacy. Through education, social media, hands-on projects, policy advocacy, ethical choices, and collaboration, these young individuals are leading the charge to protect the rich biodiversity of our planet. As they continue to shape the narrative of wildlife conservation, their passion and determination inspire hope for a future where humans and animals coexist harmoniously on a thriving and sustainable planet.

EGLE's EnviroSchool for educators is back
EnviroSchool, EGLE Classroomâs webinar series for educators, is back for the 2023-2024 school year with a series of webinars covering community science, climate change, environmental justice, and Great Lakes issues. Register now for Fall 2023 sessions and save the date for winter and spring sessions in 2024.
The EnviroSchool webinar series is geared toward teachers, interpreters, and non-formal environmental educators who want to enhance their teaching with Michigan-based resources. Last yearâs sessions focused on the work of each of EGLEâs program divisions to advance EGLEâs mission of protecting human health and the environment through managing air, land, water, and energy resources. This school yearâs sessions will focus on EGLEâs efforts to engage the community in our work and to advance environmental policy through the departmentâs major Offices.
âThe EnviroSchool series has given Michigan educators a chance to learn more about the work that EGLE is doing to protect our stateâs environment and public health through environmental management,â said Eileen Boekestein, EGLEâs environmental education coordinator. âThis helps educators ground student learning in the most important environmental issues facing their own communities and start to see how they can come alongside EGLE to work for environmental sustainability.â
Each webinar in the 2023-2024 series will take place from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and includes presentations from EGLE experts and partner organizations, curriculum connections, and career highlights.
To learn about other environmental education resources and events, subscribe to the EGLE Classroom newsletter and follow #EGLEClassroom on social media.
Registration is open for 2023 EnviroSchool events:
October 10, 2023: Empowering youth through citizen and community science
Join EGLE Classroom as we explore how to empower young people as environmental stewards through the exciting world of citizen science. Learn how 'doing science' in the community both fosters deep understanding of the environment and actively contributes to real-world scientific research. Spiritual Awakening Breaks Out at Texas A&M Corpus Christi
A revival has reportedly broken out among college students at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and a young adult pastor says it shows "no sign of slowing" down. In a recent interview with CBN News, Tarik Whitmore, the young adult pastor at New Life Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, noted that a spiritual movement is underway among the students, with hundreds making professions of faith and getting baptized almost daily. View this post on Instagram  A post shared by New Life Church (@newlifecorpus) "In the spring of 22, we started to see people preaching in their small groups â people invite their friends who don't know the Lord to their small groups. And instead of the small group being a Bible study, they would have someone get up and preach, and every time it would happen, one or two kids would give their lives to the Lord," he told the outlet. Whitmore added that during the entire spring semester, he would open the church late at night to baptize students. "I didn't do anything or minister in any way. I'm just the guy with the keys at that point," he shared. Whitmore noted that many students have been "radically changed" amid their conversion. "We are seeing these people repent from compromise and make a decision to make a public declaration of, 'No, I want to give my whole life to Jesus starting today.' And then we see them radically transformed before our eyes where their lifestyle is radically different boldness to preach the Gospel to their friends like never before," Whitmore said. "The culture of holiness has really been remarkable among these young people. They are living in purity and righteousness even at this secular university," the youth pastor continued. In August, New Life Church held its annual outreach. One thousand students attended, and 124 made professions of faith and were baptized. "Literally, we preached the message, and then for the next hour and a half, we just had the worship team play because we spent the whole time baptizing people," Whitmore said. Students have also been going to college dorms, apartments, and homes to share the Gospel. "We've had about 21 small group gatherings young adult life groups. And I think the smallest one is 20 people and the largest one is 90 people. So over 400 in these small group gatherings since Labor Day," he told CBN News. "People are inviting their friends and saying, 'Something is happening. You need to come and see.'" Since Labor Day, 21 baptisms have taken place. An additional five students were baptized last Thursday. "It just keeps happening," he noted. "I'm very hesitant to use the word revival, but I'm to the point where I don't know what else to call it, especially in light of what is happening around our nation at multiple other college campuses. It really does seem like a nationwide move of God is taking place, and we just get to be part of it." Empowering the Future: Inspiring Young Voters to Make Their Voices Heard
In a world brimming with challenges and opportunities, the voices and perspectives of young people are vital for shaping our collective future. One of the most powerful ways to make a difference is through the democratic process, and that begins with voting. In this blog post, we explore strategies to engage and empower young voters, igniting a passion for civic participation and encouraging them to exercise their right to vote.
Amplify the Issues That Matter: Young people are passionate about a range of critical issues, from climate change and social justice to student debt and affordable housing. By highlighting the impact of political decisions on these issues, we can inspire young voters to recognize the importance of their participation. Provide clear and accessible information about how voting can influence policies and effect change on the causes they care about most.
Harness the Power of Digital Platforms: Today's youth are digital natives, deeply immersed in online communities. Leverage the power of social media, digital platforms, and engaging content to capture their attention. Create informative and visually appealing content that breaks down complex political issues into digestible formats. Encourage sharing, discussions, and virtual activism to foster a sense of community and collective action.
Educate and Empower: Many young people may feel disillusioned or disconnected from the political process. Bridge this gap by providing comprehensive and engaging civics education. Develop partnerships with educational institutions, community organizations, and online platforms to deliver interactive workshops, webinars, and resources that educate young voters about their rights, the electoral process, and the impact of their vote.
Cultivate Youth Leadership: Empower young leaders to spearhead voter engagement initiatives in their communities. Establish youth-led organizations, clubs, or task forces focused on voter registration, education, and mobilization. Encourage young activists to organize local events, town halls, or candidate forums where they can directly engage with elected officials and candidates. Foster an environment that celebrates and nurtures youth leadership, providing mentorship and guidance along the way.
Collaborate and Build Alliances: Forge partnerships with youth-oriented organizations, political campaigns, and grassroots movements to create a united front in engaging young voters. Collaborative efforts can increase resources, outreach, and impact. By working together, we can create a broader network of support that reaches young people in various communities and backgrounds.
Break Down Barriers: Identify and address barriers that hinder young voters' participation. Advocate for policies that facilitate easier access to voter registration and polling locations, such as automatic registration or extended early voting periods. Organize transportation to polling stations, educate young voters about absentee and mail-in voting options, and ensure they are aware of voter ID requirements. Empower young voters to overcome logistical obstacles so that they can fully exercise their right to vote.
The power to shape our collective destiny lies within the hands of young voters. By engaging and empowering them to participate in the democratic process, we unlock the potential for transformative change. Let us create a future where young voices are valued, where their concerns are addressed, and where their dreams can flourish. Together, let's inspire a generation of engaged citizens who understand the power of their vote and work towards a better tomorrow.
Remember, every vote matters, and when young people stand up and make their voices heard, they become agents of change, shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

#SpiritDay 2021 will take place on October 21st so start turning your socials purple and get your purple shirt ready to go!
Why is #SpiritDay important in 2021?
Bullying does not just happen on the playground. It happens in our classrooms, families, workforces, communities, in proposed legislation and laws. Media representation of LGBTQ people including film, tv, online and video games has the ability to help counter the dangerous effects of bullying and has become an even more critical means of connection during this unprecedented time for the LGBTQ youth experiencing this epidemic.
A 2021 national survey by The Trevor Project shows âthe majority of LGBT youth (52%) who were enrolled in middle or high school report being bullied either in person or electronically in the past year.â
For over a decade, #SpiritDay has been a day when LGBTQ youth can go on social media and find an overwhelming number of messages of acceptance from celebrities, networks, brands, landmarks, sports leagues, and other notables.
For almost two years now, many LGBTQ youth have not been in school, unable to attend in-person meetings of Gay-Straight Alliances, Gender-Sexuality Alliances or on-campus colleges LGBTQ organizations. During this time, LGBTQ youth have also become increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of cyberbullying, specifically with heightened levels of anti-LGBTQ hate and harassment on social media. Some LGBTQ youth may be confined to a home environment that may be unsupportive or abusive. Calls to The Trevor Projectâs hotline for LGBTQ youth have at times more than doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
#SpiritDay is an opportunity for everyone to take a stand against bullying and show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Men in dresses telling women what they need to do to be good feminists. Just like men in pants.
In the discussion and debate over the ways and means to include transgender people in sports, voices like Nadia Jacobsonâs need to be heard.
In years past, the 37-year-old club volleyball player was part of a menâs team striving to reach the higher-tiers of her nationâs volleyball pyramid. While feeling at home on the court, she felt out of step and out of place with herself.
âVolleyball was an escape from all my thoughts about my identity and my gender,â she said during an interview this week on The Trans Sporter Room podcast. âEven as I played on the court there still was this thing in the back of my head to where I couldnât commit to it one-hundred percent.
âIf I hadnât been able to play volleyball all these years I wouldnât be here today. The only highlight of my life all those years was playing volleyball. It was the only thing that kept me going.â
Jacobsen was among many transgender, non-binary and intersex people who told their stories to officials of the Danish Sports Confederation. The governing body spent 2021 working to revamp transgender inclusion policies across the nationâs sports leagues and clubs.
The results led to a report published two weeks ago, which called for changes similar to the sweeping new guidelines of the International Olympic Committee. Those are set to go into effect in March.
The effort ran into resistance by the usual suspects. Mass media in the country has been influenced to indifference or ignorance by online-powered anti-trans pressure groups.
The tactics mimic well-known anti-trans efforts in the U.S. and U.K., and drew the curiosity of one observer, cybersecurity consultant Maia Kahlke Lorentzen.
âItâs the relentlessness, the lack of other things of their lives and they just keep coming at you,â she said. âThey donât have any qualms about bullying and at the same time they talk about being feminists. As a feminist, one should be an accomplice or an ally.â
Lorentzen, a host of a popular podcast on issues of cybersecurity, internet literacy and digital self-defense, turned a scholarly curiosity into a special series on the online radicalization of transphobia. Much of the material has come from her own experience studying hate groups online and stories of individual trans people in her country like Jacobsenâs, who came out three years ago.
When Jacobsen came out, she was immersed into an online inferno of transphobic tweets, memes, and comment sections.
âOnline, especially on Facebook and Twitter, itâs insane the number people who comment and call us men and say we have an unfair advantage,â Jacobsen said. âAnd you have the Danish media who beginning to mimic the English press and they are awful.â
Denmarkâs television networks and newspapers have picked up some of the stories on the continuing trans inclusion debate in the U.S. Lorentzen paid particular attention to a news item by the Denmarkâs public broadcaster last August on the now-dismissed lawsuit against Connecticutâs department of education and the stateâs high school athletics governing body backed by the anti-trans Alliance Defending Freedom.
âTheir sports coverage of trans issues is extremely transphobic,â Lorentzen said. âPeople donât realize why the article are people, and people are not aware of how steep them are in transphobia.â
Lorentzen hopes her series can help educate and balance the transphobia that seems to be a dominant theme in Danish media. Jacobsen seeks to be the person she needed when she was younger with an ambition to mentor trans youth.
Sheâs had a positive recent experience to draw on. After coming out three years ago, endless misgendering forced her to leave her longtime club. A second act was stymied by trying to find a womenâs team, but there wasnât enough women available in her area to form a team.
She ended up on a co-ed team. The squad built a bond that led to playing at EuroGames 2021 in Copenhagen last August. The experience was not only affirming for Jacobsen, it was successful. Her team ended up with a gold medal effort in their division.
It was the perfect climax for someone who thought at one time that the game they loved would have to be left behind.
âIt was amazing to just be a part of a team again,â she said. âIt was something I missed since coming out. It was amazing and we have the gold medal.â
Nadia Jacobsen had much more to say at the intersection of her transition and playing winning volleyball. Maia Kahlke Lorentzen talking about not just facing the anti-trans trolls, but also fighting them. Hear the complete interview in the latest edition of The Trans Sporter Room.Check it out on Megaphone, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Apple podcasts, and many other platforms for Outsports podcasts as well.
