Ana shuffled across her rug in her favorite fuzzy socks, the materials dragging against each other with a sound that made Syvek cringe.
She then walked directly to Gene and very carefully poked the precise tip of his nose.
"Ow! Agh, dammit Ana!" Gene rubbed at the tip of his nose as Ana collapsed into giggles.
"How did hu- Ana harm you, Gene?" Syvek asked.
"She shocked me!"
"How were you shocked? You saw that she was walking to you, you saw her hand raise to touch your nose. I cannot imagine you are unobservant enough to have failed to notice her."
"No, she... here." Gene moved to the rug and shuffled across it just as Ana had. He then touched Syvek's "hand". A sharp, stinging pain erupted where human flesh met alien.
Syvek trilled high, harsh, and loud, as his people were taught as children to respond to pain. Both humans clapped their hands over their ears and stared, wide-eyed, until Syvek stopped trilling.
"Um... That was... Are you okay?" Ana appeared distressed. Gene still stood, staring at his little amphibious friend.
"How did you cause pain with a touch? You have touched me before without causing pain!"
"He shocked you, Syvek."
"I admit I was surprised, however-" Syvek broke off at Gene's expression of dawning understanding. The human male rushed to explain,
"Syvek, humans conduct electricity. We're like 90% saline. When we scuff our feet on the rug while wearing socks, we build up a static charge, then when we touch something or someone, the charge is released."
Syvek was silent. Humans conducted electricity. And could temporarily store a charge.
Oh, stars.
Deathworlders were walking batteries.
Humans are weird: Static Electricity
I’ve been looking at these humans are weird/humans are space orcs/Earth is space Australia posts and I’ve yet to see anything related to static electricity. Like how would aliens react to the idea that humans can just accidentally “shock” each other and how would humans explain that. Or what would it look like when an alien gets “shocked” for the first time, and the human that shocked them was not effected or not as effected as the alien was. What if aliens can’t accumulate static like humans can but they can still be shocked by statically charged humans.
Please feel free to take this idea and run with it, I would love to see the results.

The first time Gene tells Syvek to hold his beer, Syvek replies, "Gene, there are no alcoholic beverages on- WHAT ARE YOU DOING"
The second time Gene tells Syvek to hold his beer, Syvek replies, "Gene, do not jump off that- BLAST YOU HUMANS AND YOUR DEATHWISH"
The third time Gene tells Syvek to hold his beer, both of them end up in the med bay due to a "slight miscalculation".
The fourth time Gene tells Syvek to hold his beer, Syvek dives under the table.
“When a human says ‘hold my beer’, that’s a warning. That’s when you run. ESPECIALLY if the said human is not currently holding a beverage.”
