Roman’s mother never feels the same for more than a minute. Not about him, not about anyone, not about anything. He’s five years old and she’s on the couch sobbing, laughing, and yelling all in one breath.

She likes her drink. Almost as much as she her little bags full of powder she tells him not to touch. 

He’s very careful in the house- to follow her rules, keep quiet, and not touch anything.

(“You’re going to get hurt and everyone’s gonna think I’m a terrible mother! Is that it? Do you want everyone to hate me? Do you hate me? Don’t you realize how much I gave up for you??? I didn’t want a kid!!! I didn’t want you! You’ve ruined my life- oh don’t cry, I can’t stand to see you cry, oh I’m terrible mother I’m terrible I should kill myself right here, I’m nothing without you, no don’t try and stop me-“)

Sometimes she tells him she wishes she’d had a girl instead. Usually he’d want anything that would make her happy- but secretly he’s seen the men she invites to the parties, and he’s glad he’s not.

There are needles around the house. He’s very careful not to touch them, not to bring them up. He brought one to his mother once; asked her what it is, in his curious, five year old way. That upset her. She smacked it out of his hand, grabbed him by the wrist, already yelling had told him: don’t you touch that, don’t you ever ever touch those” 

He promised he wouldn’t, he would be very careful, it was alright please don’t be angry, please don’t be sad. Roman hated her sad.

She isn’t mean of course. She’s just sad. 

Later that same day he knocks something to the floor. Nothing breakable of course, but he knew his mistake the moment he’d done its

“She isn’t mean” he thinks to himself when she grabs him by the shoulder and shakes him so hard his head hurts for days, and his spit is stained pink. “She’s just sad. She’s just sad.”

Indeed, she comes back later, drunk as daylight, sobbing apologizes and grabs him so tightly it hurts - but he doesn’t want her to be sad, and it was his fault all along (She isn’t mean: she just loves me. She’s just sad)- so he tries to comfort her while she shrieks and wails. 

(Over the years various medics will offer Roman such substances, offering up syringes  full of morphine, codeine, or some other opioid, for a gunshot, stab wound, broken rib or concussion. He laughs them off with a dangerous sort of sneer. He’d rather die.)

Her drinks are cheap- beer, tequila, whatever someone offers her at the bar. She left bottles about the house as she pleased. One of Roman’s first memories of her, in the good part of her drug trip, reaching out to grab his tiny little wrists.

“Oh no, don’t touch that baby.” His mother had said with an airy chuckle. “Those are your mama’s.”

In ten years Roman will order single whiskeys- neat, or glasses of wine worth more than a small families income. He will drink them slowly- never more than two. He won’t touch the shots, doesn’t so much as glance at the beers. He never drinks out of a bottle. No matter the drink or the time, when he raises his hand a little voice in his still rings out, sickly sweet, and slightly slurred “Oh no, don’t touch that baby. Those are your mama’s”

She likes men. She likes them better than her son. She howls on a weekly basis about job father.

After a bottle from beneath the kitchen sink she was sad, always sad, and talked about herself - why didn’t he love her, what didn’t she have??? What had she done wrong???

Sometimes she was angry, coming after she’d emptied a little white bag- he was an ass, he was terrible, he was the one who abandoned his son, you should hate him, but don’t worry of course, you have me I’m a good mother I’m enough you love me right? You love me and you hate him right?

(Roman always nodded, ever eager to please, little green eyes ever full of love for his mother)

Sometimes, at random, for seemingly no reason, she breaks off in her rants, her self laments, and turns on Roman.

What is wrong with you? It’s just my luck to have a kid like this???

It’s your fault! , she howls, kneeling on the stained rug, it’s your fault your father left! You were supposed to keep him here!

She gets rid of him for a man. Or at least, that’s what started it. Roman doesn’t remember the man’s face. He remembers the flirting. The man leaning over her, her hands all over him, giggling like a child. He remembers the look the man gave him, when he noticed Roman in the corner. 

He remembered the way the man turned to his mother and asked in the same voice as every other faceless man in Mistral that stunk of cheap cigarettes and beer

“You’ve got a kid?”

His mother didn’t bring the man home after that- she only went out. Every night at least, stumbling back in at 4am, and sleeping until five, she went out with her new friend.

Roman remembers the man tucked a rose into his mothers hair, slipped one into her hand when he left her at the door- that he placed a bouquet of roses amongst the bottles of booze.

He barely remembers the rest.

There was a pot of water boiling on the stove, and Roman was inching up beside his mother. She’d left him alone, tired and hungry, to go out with her friend every night for past week or so. 

Roman can’t remember if he ever said anything to her. He isn’t sure if she’d gone into one of her fits if she’d been sad or drunk or raging when she’d flipped the silver pot of boiling water across her sons face and left the room.

He remembers the feeling of burning water on his skin, on his eye- so hot it didn’t even hurt. 

He remembers staring at the the cracked tile of the kitchen floor beneath him, ears ringing, head aching.

He remembers apologizing when she finally came back, biting his lower lip trying his best not to cry, doing his best to focus on her fuzzy outline.

He remembers the way she looked at him for the next few days- like he was some alleyway pest.

He remembers the dirty snow on the cold sidewalks, trying his best to keep up with his mother 

He remembers they walked for miles, that by the time they got to orphanage he couldn’t feel his feet.

He remembers asking her where they were going, apologizing as they walked, and promising, over and over, that he would be good whenever they got home.

He remembers her leaving him. 

He remembers all he wanted was a hug.
