That was a very cute fic! I am curious though: what made you decide for Var to fall for an NPC?
Thank you! :3c I’m glad you enjoyed it!
As for Var having fallen for their version of the Revolutionary Firebrand aka Aithinne aka Bertram Willoughby (which I say because there are so many Firebrands about the place), I originally did not intend to have Var fall for any NPC at all. It just kind of happened because the way that particular storyline developed suited who Var is as a character?
When I started playing further along the Firebrand’s storyline that I realised that he had traits that Var was partial to, particularly being near-perilously earnest. Var is totally weak to earnest people, not only romantically but in general. (Lorem is an important example.) Usually they sort of compensate for that by being standoffish in case that person is trying to deceive them, but they got caught off guard by how honest the Firebrand came across as being.
Also he’s a shy nerd (who goes to parties and stands around reading by himself) with some sort of moral convictions plus an interest in archaeology, and secretly kind of snarky, so also very much Var’s type in that respect, too. In classic Var style they sort of... Put the moves on him while telling themself that they were only after the information he had, and then accidentally fell for him. I thought that would be fitting and sweet and hilarious, so I went with it.
