I'm starting to really hate my job. I'm scheduled to work eight hours but they only give me six hours worth of work to do, but I'm not allowed to leave early. After I get done actually working I have to find two hours worth of nonsense to do to look busy because if anybody sees me doing something other than working diligently for those eight hours then they'll complain to my boss who will complain to me. And apparently there are some people who will also complain to my boss if they do see me working because they want everything to be cleaned but they don't want to deign to see the person that does the cleaning. They won't say anything to my face mind you, nobody in that office has ever said an unkind word to me and several of them have gone out of their way to pull me aside and thank me for doing such a good job. But one of them (and I have my suspicions who it was) emailed my boss who then spent way too long telling me all about how I need to be done before they get there so I'm not in their way. So now I'm no longer stretching six hours of work into an eight hour day, I'm cramming six hours of work into the first four hours of an eight hour work day and then I'm spending the next four hours looking busy so they know things are getting cleaned, but also avoiding being seen.
Also the day before that office emailed about not having to see me, they also emailed about things not being clean enough (all of their complaints centering on the fact that I'm not doing certain tasks which I was either never told to do or explicitly told not to do) so my boss spent almost two hours yesterday showing my how to do exactly what I've been doing 13 times a day every single workday for the past two months. So not only am I supposed to be doing everything almost twice as fast as I have been, they also don't want to see any dip in quality at all and in fact want me to do an ever better job at cleaning everything.
#I made that post a week or two ago about wanting to work in a restaurant again because I read Kitchen Confidential#At the time I was merely being wistful with no actual plans to leave my current job but now I am browsing through indeed#But the problem is that no other job I'm qualified for can match the hours and pay that my current job has let alone the benefits#The only exception would be if I got another job at the university because then I could keep all the benefits I just got#But every other job I could get requires a New Mexico driver's license which I don't have yet but will be getting probably next week#My boss has also been talking about transferring me to a different set of building to clean#I was very hesitant about it at first because I would have been cleaning a bunch of smaller buildings which seemed even more boring#but at this point if I don't get that transfer then I'm most likely going to quit sometime in the near future#That new set of buildings also requires a New Mexico driver's license though because you have to drive a work van to them#So I'm just going to have to suffer through the next week or so until I can get my license#and then either get that transfer or just get a different job

Article from NYT: To Build Emotional Strength, Expand Your Brain
The quest to understand something new is a key factor to building the resilience necessary to weather setbacks and navigate life’s volatility.
Monika Aichele
By Kerry Hannon
This article is part of a series on resilience in troubled times — what we can learn about it from history and personal experiences.
Eight years ago, while working as an assistant Cuyahoga County prosecutor in Cleveland, Gayle Williams-Byers was in the throes of a serial killer case when she decided to take horseback-riding lessons.
This summer, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Ms. Williams-Byers, 46, now a South Euclid Municipal Court judge, started free online classes in American Sign Language offered by Gallaudet University in Washington. She also took a webinar in labor trafficking. In recent years, she has enrolled in a variety of classes and workshops, including one on how to get a commercial driver’s license — not something she plans to act on any time soon.
“I don’t have a reason to use these things in my professional life, but learning helps me to focus better,” Ms. Williams-Byers said. “It’s also something that I have some control over. I take classes in subjects I am just wildly interested in learning about it. When I expand my brain, my wingspan is greater. It lets you get a little higher, to get above the headwinds.”
Ms. Williams-Byers’ quest to understand something new is an example of what many career coaches, authors and experts view as a key factor to building the resilience necessary to weather setbacks and navigate life’s volatility.
The theory: To deal effectively with change, it helps to be engaged in changing yourself. “One of the things that makes us resilient is that when we see a challenge, and when we face a struggle, we engage with it, rather than shut down,” said Simon Sinek, author of “The Infinite Game” and “Start With Why.”
“What I have learned from my career is that something I learned over here helps me over there,” he said. “Even if I don’t know that is happening, any kind of learning benefits all aspects of life.”
Embrace Your Passions
Mr. Sinek, for instance, is a dance lover. “My dancer friends kept telling me I should take classes, and it would help me and my love of the medium. I begrudgingly agreed, and I took some basic ballet classes.”
Even though it was for personal enrichment, those classes helped his developing work as a public speaker. “My posture is much better,” he said. “I move more effortlessly across the stage from my hips, instead of my shoulders.”
When you’re in the process of learning, your viewpoint changes, and you spot connections that you never noticed before. “Resilience is about being adaptable in a variety of different circumstances,” said Dorie Clark, who teaches executive education at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and is the author of “Reinventing You.”
“It is a combination of being able to pick yourself up when there are setbacks, but also it is about having the kind of cross-training necessary to be flexible in an uncertain world where we don’t know what is around the corner,” Ms. Clark said.
Learning Requires Determination
This all may require pushing yourself — not the easiest of tasks in times of crisis. “If they are relatively senior professionals, it has been years, or decades, since they have not been good at something, and it can be enormously psychologically stressful to have to face that,” Ms. Clark said. “Inevitably, when you are in the early stages of learning something you haven’t done before, you are probably going to be bad at it — at least not very good.”
Two years ago, Ms. Clark entered a program to train as a musical theater lyricist. “People in this program have master’s degrees in musical theater writing,” she said. “At first, having to surround myself with people who truly had exponentially more expertise was humiliating on a regular basis, but it was invigorating and inspiring.”
Stay Curious
Being resilient has a lot to do with perspective. “People who commit themselves to a life of learning show up with curiosity,” Mr. Sinek said. “They show up with interest. They show up with a student’s mind-set. You don’t have to be curious about everything. You have to be curious about some things.”
Those who routinely and consciously engage in learning become more confident about their ability to figure things out once a crisis hits, according to Beverly Jones, an executive career coach and author of “Think Like an Entrepreneur, Act Like A CEO.” “Each time they hit a bump, they spend less time lamenting and quickly turn to determining what they must learn in order to climb out of the hole,” she said.
Moreover, learners develop a more optimistic mind-set, which helps them jump into action, according to Ms. Jones. “In part, this is because each time you become aware of learning something new it feels like a victory,” Ms. Jones said. “You maintain the positivity that is a key to resilience.”
Tailor Your Learning
An important element to remember is that people learn in different ways, Mr. Sinek said. “I can’t read a book a week. I learn by having conversations. I like talking to people who know more than me about any particular subject. I love peppering them with questions. And I love trying to say back in my own words what I think they are telling me to see if I understand it.”
Right now, with his speaking engagements on hold, Mr. Sinek is studying kintsugi, the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with epoxy and a painted gold solution, which highlights the breaks. The concept: By accepting blemishes and flaws, you can produce an even sturdier, more striking, piece of art. On a deeper level, it functions as a symbol of the human experience.
For one thing, it requires patience. “It turns out the epoxy dries slowly,” Mr. Sinek said. “If you do all the pieces at once, it all just falls apart again. I want to be done with my project and move on to the next. I can’t. I have to stick one piece and hold it for an uncomfortable amount of time and then let sit for 24 hours.”
There are myriad paths to learning from taking part in a free online class to reading a nonfiction book to watching a documentary to a complete immersion in a grade-free educational experience.
Chip Conley, 59, for example, founded the Modern Elder Academy, in Baja, Mexico, a group dedicated to midlife learning.
The academy’s core curriculum is based on helping people move from a fixed to a growth mind-set in midlife and beyond, according to Mr. Conley. “Those with a fixed mind-set define success as winning, which becomes problematic when they face difficult circumstances,” he said. “Those with a growth mind-set define success as learning. They’re not trying to prove themselves, but instead improve themselves, so they get less focused on the results and more focused on the journey.”
At the academy, options include collaborative bread baking, improv comedy, learning how to surf or do yoga for the first time and penning a poem to offer to your cohort.
Academic and Online Options
There are also educational opportunities for nontraditional students at some top universities through academic or yearlong programs for executives and other professionals. Students can audit classes, attend lectures, and work on projects with graduate and undergraduate students.
These include the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute, Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative, the University of Notre Dame’s Inspired Leadership Initiative, the University of Minnesota’s Advanced Careers Initiative, and the University of Texas at Austin, which offers the Tower Fellows Program.
Three years ago, Glenn Lowenstein, 60, was ready for a new challenge. The Houston resident had sold Lionstone Investments, the real estate investment company he founded in 2001, to Ameriprise. “It was a hard decision,” he said. “The business had been my dream, and then I lived the reality of it for 20 years, and all of a sudden there was a void. It was scary. When there is nothing in front of you, that’s where the resiliency has to come in.”
His solution was to return to campus. Two years ago, he was a Towers fellow. “You have to put yourself out there in an environment you have not been in before,” he said. “It’s a combination of confidence in yourself, enjoyment in exploration and going toward your fear.”
As a fellow, Mr. Lowenstein, for example, enrolled in an advanced graduate philosophy seminar. “It was way above my head,” he said. “I would try my hardest to follow every single word of the conversation. It was fascinating to me the way the graduate students articulated their arguments. It was super esoteric stuff, but I would walk out and be ‘wow, I am learning a new way to communicate here.’”
The best part, though, was his time on campus: “It was so cool to be in an environment where I wasn’t the expert,” he said. “I wasn’t the person relied on to know everything, so I could sit back and enjoy the process of learning, and that’s positive energy. My aim is to keep my mind and body and spirit healthy. I don’t think you can do that without learning.”
For those who can’t afford the time or money required for a high-level fellowship or university program, there are myriad paths to learning. Free or reasonably priced online classes are available through sites like Coursera, EdX, The Great Courses, LinkedIn Learning, MasterClass, Skillshare, TED Talks and Udemy.
Other options (online these days) include adult education centers, local libraries, community colleges and universities, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes. One Day University, a subscription service ($7.95 a month), offers five livestreaming lectures a week and recorded talks.
For Ms. Williams-Byers, learning is “that extra oomph to turn off the crazy in life and pour yourself into something that is fantastic that you can benefit from,” she said.
That explains her decision to take up a new sport during a particularly difficult case. “I had dealt with murder cases before, but this was unsettling,” she said. “I could feel myself disconnecting from the case because of the emotional drain. The hourlong lessons refocused my mind, so I could bounce back when I returned to the office.”

Driving to the El Monte CA regional dealership is some times apparently a brisk or budget option to form a fresh key by the VIN, but in some events (for example GM) the dealer-ship need you to get a legal car title or registration with an equal street address on your photo ID. In some other circumstances, the dealer-ship dont have access to antiquated key codes by the vehicle ID number (for example Lincoln, Mercury and Ford), the dealer can form displacement keys merely for models from the last 10 years.
On top of the bureaucracy above, in varied manifestations, your car is locked on the expressway in in a backwoods area, with a broken key in the ignition or locked with the key in the truck and to choose the dealership will enclose nearby extra hundred dollars for the towing truck service.
About Nissan key-lock infrastructure
Assembled in 1933, Nissan is Nissan Motor Company Ltd subsidiary that build common vehicles marketed to North America, Mexico, the Middle East and China. Since 1999 selection of Nissan cars are applying transponder as a main electric and anti-theft lock and key structure. This keys that can be duplicated by a natural on board procedure or by diagnostic tools if one or more of the keys misplaced. In 2007 Nissan appoint the Intelligent Key with proximity key, push-button start and remotes to meet standard objectives like clicking a toggle to clench or unlatch the doors as well as pushtostart ignition or smartkey.
Ignition repair
The Nissan ignition use three phases that light up different instrument as the key is turned. The ignition cylinder will light up the electronic units on the 1st phase, light up the fuel pump on the second phase and kindle the car engine on the 3rd phase.
One of the most common question our agens confront over the phone for assitance with, is diagnosing ignition problems. Whilst our agent are generally pleased to try and diagnose your scenario, it can be very hard to perform over the phone. Besides carrying proper Nissan diagnostic and lock crackerjack tools, an elemental knowledge of how vehicle ignition works is required, but before you call an ignnition lock smith try to check the options below:
</p> <h5>No dash-board console lights</h5> <p> If you turn the ignition on and no lights come on on the dash board which means that no electrical power running from the car battery. It could be A deflated battery or some times a bad electronic wiring connection or alternator could be the reason for this. Light up the front lights, if they wont light up, it's in fact means the battery is dead which is a task for a electrician.
</p> <h5>Ignition key wont turn</h5> <p> Nearly all car accommodate a locking steering column that is being locked whenever you take the ignition key out of the switch when you finish a drive. Sometimes, the steering column can lock in a position that employs tension to the ignition , and prevents the key from turning (usually happens when you park up a hill) or when one of the front wheels is pushed against an obstacle (e.g. curb stone).
* Before you begin troubleshooting this problem, make sure that your car shifting gear is on park.
Grab the wheel and try to move the sized steering wheel to the sides right and left and left and right altogether with gently jiggling the ignition holding the key - which might help in releasing the steering column.
The ignition cylinder is highly important element of any vehicle and consisting manifold small components that can be difficult to diagnose by an incompetent hands, so the only thing a driver can do coming across ignition or key issues is to double-check you are actually attempting to start your own car and call a car lock smith to come down to your premise to repair, replace reprogram the ignition or key which will priced as about $150–$350.
Transponder chipped key generate
Due to the high rates of car theft towenty years ago, majority of motor vehicles starting at approximately 1995 apply electronic key lock utilizing passive anti theft system, transponder or vehicle anti theft keys.
When chipped key is entered into the ignition key-breach, the chip starts and conveys an RF indicator code to the car main computer. If the indication code is coordinated with the code in the ECM, the car will crank to achieve antitheft instrumentation for contemporary cars.
To construct or copy a key, on top of the fact that the key has to be physically cut to fit the cylinder, it also has to be rightly decoded to the immobiliser
Nissan keyless entry
Smart keys are a top choice in car user comfort and convenience, you are adept to unlock and lock your car door and furthermore igniting the car engine – without even holding the key. You just need to have it on yourself, whether in your purse or pocket.
Every time the car user walk by their vehicle, the smartkey is detected by a paired combination of audio and infrared chip inside the smartkey. The car door open and unlock when the car user yanks the lock handle. The car engine activates pressing a push-buttons on the dash-board. The push-buttons is taking the place of the mechanical key by opening the current on the car fuel injection.
Locking the car when exiting is just as convenient. The car user merely pushes a button on the door lock handle – some keyless entry device mechanisms even lock when ever the car user walks out of reach.
Copy vs lost car keys
Car keys lately cost way more then $2.50 metal blade keys at one of your local home depot or hardware store. Newer Nissan keys became computerized smartkey, switch-blade key, fob key and laser cut accommodating transponder keys that need to be programmed with key programmer to the vehicle immobiliser. If the engine control module does not detect a compatible transponder, the fuel injection will deactivate and the car will not crank. This instrumentation serves as a safety measurement ensuring the disabling of a misplaced or stolen key.
Even though dash board procedure is available on some outmoded models to easily duplicate keys, generally to get an additional key duplicated, the transponder in the key should be programmed by a suitable key programming machine owned by a locksmith or the dealer-ship which regularly priced at roughly $50-$120 on top of the cost of the blank key.
A lost key to an automobile is entirely different situation, because the engine control module should be re-synced to accept the new key and deny the old one which actually means that you’ll must call a mobile car locksmith or tow your car to the dealer-ship.
Employing this process serves as a safety measurement ensuring the disabling of the misplaced or stolen key, though lost key made, system available solely to a licensed locksmith or the Nissan dealer-ship and therefore will priced as about $175–$250.

Once Upon a Time in Guatemala AKA THE ANTIGUA MASTER POST
This post contains my crew’s entry to Guatemala and also photos and history of several places in Antigua I explored. All photos by moi!
There’s not much to say about border crossings other than they tend to be (occasionally) long and (always) tedious. Having a cary further complicates things, as they require their own set of documents, fees, and lines to take care of. Bringing a car into Mexico requires registration, a copy of your driver's license, Mexican car insurance, a copy of your passport, and the put down (in my case) a $400 deposit saying your car will leave the country when it’s permit, which begins when you enter the country, expires. To get that money back, you have to go to the office that handles that, in addition to filling out forms and getting your passport stamped. I hit another snag with that because my card had been cancelled while I was travelling, and I had to fill out another form to have to money put back on a different debit card. Fortunately, I remembered that the card the original deposit was tied to had changed before we left the country or that money would have been gone forever.
The drive into Guatemala was beautiful, but also long and tedious. The first hour or so was through a large canyon, following the path of a river, dotted by small towns that clung it’s banks between the road and the cliff walls. After that things opened up a bit and became rolling hills, large overlooks and distant volcanoes. However, this scenery was marred by the road itself being terrible. Potholes the size of cars in some places, straight dirt road in others, unpainted speed bumps, suicidal street dogs and the occasional spattering rain. While the scenery was something to look at, I could hardly appreciate it with everything I had to dodge. The day was a taxing one, and I breathed a sigh of relief when we reached Antigua at sundown. It was officially my first day in Guatemala, little did I know I would end up spending the better part of the next year in the country.
For the first few nights in the city we stayed at a hostel owned by their friends, a couple, he from Mexico, her from San Diego. Their spot, affectionately named “A Place to Stay” was home to several cats, two rabbits, and comfortable, homey vibe. Chris and Elena were only there a few days before they located their new home, an apartment on the north side of the city, up a hill that had a view of the volcanos Fuego and Acatenango. I did not spend as much time as I would have wanted exploring the city, as I had to make a trip to Lake Atitlan to leave my car with some friends, then jet back to Guatemala City to fly home for Christmas. However, even the little bit of time I got there made a huge impression on me. A lot of travellers seem to glance past Antigua, see it is a place to pass through on the way to something else. Granted, it is more expensive to stay here than many of the other places nearby, and it isn’t very big, either, but that never dissuaded me. I was besotted with the city once I first laid eyes on it the daytime, it seemed like something out of fairytale, a place with a strange and complicated history (like so many other cities) but this one existed as a partial time capsule, a monument to itself, a decaying snowglobe. I imagine cities that share the narrative of being built centuries ago, and largely abandoned by their populace, likely share a similar feel. I imagine Venice may be a sibling, though the sinking city draws far more tourists than this rustic town.
The famous Santa Catalina Arch, that once was a walkway between a nunnery and a church that no longer exist. Volcano Agua is in the background.
I think that is why I love it. Coming from a country that’s younger than many of the ancient buildings within the city limits, I have an appreciation for things from another era. I feel it especially coming from California, a state that has only boomed in population in the last century, where land is at such a premium that old buildings are constantly being torn down and replaced by new ones, leaving us with very little standing history. And that which still stands, is usually scarcely more than a century old. The only exception to this rule are the missions, built by the same kinds of people who built the churches of Antigua, during the same time period, but unlike the churches of Antigua, the missions are not at the center of California cities, and many of them you have to venture to find. In Antigua there are the remains of one of the oldest churches in Antigua, sitting abandoned on a hill stand just a hundred steps from my friend’s front door (pictured below, built in the mid-1500s).
The remains of Manchen
To walk through Antigua is to walk through history itself. Many of the buildings you casually stroll by are centuries old, and those that aren’t were built to mimic that same style. This gives the entire city central a feeling of falling back through time, somewhere in the 17th century. Much of the city has been felled and rebuilt, time and again, but many of the larger, more ornate buildings, have been left where they fell. Seismic activity has been the plague of this land since the Spanish first set foot here. The second Spanish capital, the one immediately preceding Antigua, was called Almolonga. On September 11, 1541, it was swallowed by a giant mud and ash slide triggered by heavy rainfall, that slid down the volcano Fuego. The slide killed many of the residents, including the first femal governor in the new world, Beatrice La Cueva, who had only been in power a few days, haven taken command after the death of her husband. The slide buried most of Almolonga, covering the local church in a layer of ash and mud so deep, that only the bell tower remains, standing at the crossroads of an intersection in the town that was built upon the remains, Ciudad Vieja. With no choice but to relocate, the capital was moved 5 miles away to the Panchoy Valley, and Antigua would remain the capital of Guatemala (which at the time was comprised of all of modern day Belize, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and southernmost state of Mexico, Chiapas) for over 200 years. Moving the capital to the valley, however, did not solve the geological issues. Due to its proximity to the volcanos Fuego, Agua and Acatenango, Antigua was rocked by violent earthquakes all throughout its history that damaged or all out destroyed several of its beautiful structures. The first church built in Antigua was the church of Santa Lucia in 1541, and it still stands on the outer edge of the city. The next three small churches built in Antigua, Manchen (1548), Candelaria (1565), and Los Remedios (1574) were built to serve various workers in different sections of the cities. The remains of these still stand, though they are not as revered as other, more magnificent structures. Candelaria, with what's left of an impressive Baroque facade, now sits behind a basketball court, surrounded by a low fence. Los Remedios stands along the road bears the stations of the cross, splitting the difference between two bigger and more famous churches, fenced in on what appears to be a family’s private land, judging by the small edifice set up in a corner. What is left of Manchen, which was later replaced by the larger church of San Sebastian further down the hill, is just a few hundred feet from the doorway of my friend’s apartment, open to whoever wishes to wander around it. I actually had a little bit of difficulty finding the names of these churches, as there are so many others still standing or partially standing in Antigua that are newer, better maintained, and more famous. These three are among the originals, even if their names and purposes are being lost to time.
Volcano Agua, as observed from Cerro de Cruz
The first version of Antigua’s cathedral, at the end of the central plaza, was also built during this time, with the first edifice constructed around 1545. Through the end of the century, earthquakes struck every decade or so, starting in 1565, 1575, 1577 and 1583. The original cathedral building was especially damaged by the earthquakes of 1583 and 1600, before being demolished in 1669. The new cathedral was completed in 1680, and an eight day celebration was held to celebrate it. The Santa Marta earthquake of 1773 that caused the city to be abandoned did extensive damage to the cathedral. After the capital was relocated, locals attempted to restore San Jose in 1830. They sealed off the back of the cathedral where the main altar was, and focused on repairing the front that faced the plaza. The bell towers of the church were removed in 1876, and the newly restored front was open for business, while the ruins of the 1680s building still stand behind it. You can wander through these ghostly halls, made extra eery by the fact that after the 1773 earthquake, the church ruins were used as a graveyard. The walls and pillars still stand, with high arches and crowns open to the sky, a layer of the dead resting peacefully, and some mysterious tunnels beneath them. There are also crypts beneath the church that are still used for Mayan rituals to this day.
There are old convents aplenty in the city. The Convento de Capuchinas has a particularly interesting nun’s quarters. The convent contains a circular room, with one entryway via a hallway and twelve doors, each leading to a small closet of a bedroom for the nuns. The rooms are open, and you can walk in and see for yourself the simple accomodations the women made due with. The convent’s remains also house a beautiful garden area.
The Convento de Santa Clara has lovely gardens and a beautiful baroque facade on the outside. It lost most of it’s roofs to earthquakes, but the two stories of halls around the central garden still stand.
The Convento de Santa Teresa has an interesting history, as it was used both as a wine-making facility and a prison after the capital was relocated to Guatemala City. The last prisoner walked out it’s doors in the 1950s after the building was found to be unsafe for people to inhabit, probably because of earthquake damage.
The last photos is the wine-making facility.
Semana Santa is huge in Antigua (though I admit, I have not attended it, mostly because I hate crowds). In fact all Catholic holidays are huge there, and it’s not unusual to witness a procession in the streets. One of the most famous churches, San Francisco, stands near the edge of town, along a road marked by stations of the cross that ends in a bright yellow church called El Calvario. During Semana Santa, each station is thrown open to reveal…..something ( I don’t know, I wasn’t there).
El Cavalrio
San Francisco is still a functioning church, the part that has been restored. The ruins house the museum of Hermano Pedro, the patron saint of Antigua, in its ruins. Hermano Pedro, devoted to charity, founded schools for the poor, helped heal the sick, and planted trees around Antigua. In the courtyard of San Francisco there is a tree said to have been planted by him, and it’s flowers are placed inside candles that you burn to call upon his aide, sold right by the church entrance.
There is one church that functions as a charity hospital still in his name. Hermano Pedro is the name of the (other) yellow church with a beautiful baroque finish, located near the pilas (wash stations) in the city. The church operates a hospital for the poor that runs on donations only, offering free health care to the sick and needy. The first hospital in Antigua was founded by Hermano Pedro in the 1600s. The hospital that bears his name was founded in 1663 by Dominican friars, Capuchin nuns took over its upkeep in 1800s and work was done on the building in 1869. While it was damaged by earthquakes several times throughout its history, it was rebuilt every time. In 1984, the Franciscan priest Guillermo Bonilla, felt called to follow in Hermano Pedro's footsteps in ministering to the poor, sick and outcasts of society. He rented small homes to house the abandoned elderly and orphaned children and appealed to the citizens of Guatemala for help. Eventually he began rebuilding the ruins of the hospital destroyed by the 1974 earthquake and the present day hospital facility continues in the Franciscan tradition of taking in those who need help and care. The hospital receives no government support and relies solely on donations. It is operated by the Franciscan order of the Catholic Church and is directed by Padre Jose Contran. I actually got to meet one of the doctors who worked at the hospital by chance and he filled me in on some of the details. The church still holds regular services as well.
The Pilas, oddly enough, I don’t have a photo of the hospital on hand, even though I know I took several. It might be saved somewhere else.
There is another (other other) yellow church in Antigua that holds services as well. La Merced church was founded by the Mercedarian order in the 1700s and completed in 1767. A lovely church on the north side of the city, with a yellow exterior, baroque details, and a beautiful dome flanked by lion statues, it was designed with lower arches to better withstand earthquakes. True to its design, it was less damaged by the earthquakes than other churches in the area, but was still abandoned after the capital was moved, and subsequent earthquakes caused the convent walls to collapse. It was then used as a stone quarry by locals, which further damaged the site. In 1853 reconstruction began and the main nave was restored, and now holds services, while the ruins were preserved and in the process of restoration. Among the ruins, Merced boasts the largest fountain in Antigua, so big that it was once used to raise fish for the inhabitants to eat.
My favorite set of ruins, second only to the grand Cathedral itself, are those of La Recoleccion. One of the last churches to be built in Antigua before the capital was moved, they had to ask for a dispensation to erect the massive structure at the edge of the city. Constructions began in 1701 and the church was inaugarated in 1717. It was one of the largest in the city of Antigua, it’s huge nave and dome dwarfing that of many of the earlier churches. Unfortunately, it was not to last, it was first damaged by and earthquake just months after construction finished in 1717. It sustained further injury in the earthquakes of 1751, and, like so many of its siblings, it was nearly destroyed by the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773. After the city was largely abandoned it served as home for various other endeavors such as a stable, soap factory and sports complex, which caused more structural damage, before eventually being retired as a landmark. Unlike it’s siblings (at least the ones that allow people in) a great deal of La Recoleccion rubble has been left where it lay, mostly inside the nave. This, combined with the two-story walls, still standing albeit at slightly odd angles, full of cracks, and what remains of the doorway arches, octagonal windows, and attached structures, gives it an ethereal feel of stepping back in time, like you entered the place just after it collapsed from the earthquakes. Bright white walls against blue skies, their facades peeling away, surrounding a floor you can only explore by finding your way through fallen pieces of columns and arches that once upheld the high ceiling, creates a dreamscape that harks to a time long gone, or maybe one that has never been. La Recoleccion would not be out of place in a historical epic, a fantasy world at war, or a high fashion photoshoot. My photos of this place barely do it justice.
There are several other church ruins scattered about Antigua, El Carmen in the market with its numerous winding columns for one, La Iglesia de Jesus Cristo, its red paint still intact, part of which now houses a school.
La Iglesia de Jesuscristo
El Manchen to the north side of Antigua, Nuestra Senora de los Remedios on the road to El Calavario, and Candelaria, a beautiful example of heavy baroque embellishments, were some of the first churches built in Guatemala to serve the indigenous workers that built Antigua. El Manchen was built on a hill in 1565 for ironworkers and carpenters, now it’s surrounded by apartments in a neighborhood dubbed “Colonial Manchen.” Nuestra Senora de los Remedios was constructed in 1574 to the southeast for rope and mat makers. It now resides on a private lot behind locked gates, sharing the plot of land with a small home. Candelaria, the first of the three, was built in 1548 for farmers and artisans. Today it sits, surrounded by a low fence, behind a basketball court.
Casa Santo Domingo used to be a monastery, but after Antigua’s growing popularity as a tourist destination, parts of it were restored and turned into the only 5 star hotel in Antigua, which opened in 1989. There is also a museum on site, and the ruins remain, what’s left of a massive fountain, as well as the crypts, some of which still contain the full skeletons and bone fragments of the former friars.
These are just some of the churches. Several were further out of the way, harder to find, or completely destroyed and rebuilt. There were more that, despite my digging, I could not find a title for, boarded up, undergoing restoration, or just sitting there, not being torn down, but nothing being done with them either. By the end of the 17th century there were 38 churches in Antigua and 16 monasterys and convents, and more came after that, it would take me many more months of living there and research to document them all.. It’s not just churches, either, there is the Palace of the Guards on the edge of Antigua’s square, row after row of neatly restores columns, or the college that shares a border with it, once attended by the sons of Spanish nobility.
Palace of the Guards, a face on the side of the college, and an elaborate doorway on the Hermano Pedro hospital.
There are the pilas, with their little fountain, erected so that women without running water in their homes could do their laundry throughout the city. There are the various fountains, still working after all these years, dotting various small parks and courtyards. There are the buildings themselves, though it’s difficult to say what is restored colonial and what is new, made to look like old. The fact that the whole city seems to agree that colonial is now and will continue to be the theme gives Antigua a cohesiveness other cities lack. Sure, the cobblestones are a pain to drive over, and the streets are narrow, the sidewalks uneven, and the market loud. But you just take your time, driving slowly, take your time in the market, crowded with various Mayan languages being threaded with Spanish, a cacophony that can be musical sometimes, overwhelming at others, maybe watch the volcano Fuego erupt, from up close or at a distance, as it does every month or so. All of this creates a curious tapestry of tradition and progress, a place laden with history, trying to compromise that past with the modern era, a net that so perfectly ensnared me for part of a year in 2017.

A Car-Free Vacation
New Post has been published on https://www.montanastravelagency.com/a-car-free-vacation/
A Car-Free Vacation
Want to really get away from it all? Away from computers, away from the phone, and even away from… cars?
If you’re ready to say buh-bye to traffic jams, parking tickets, and high gasoline prices on your next trip, here are a dozen beautiful vacation spots where horses, bikes, golf carts or walking shoes are the transportation of choice.
Mackinac Island, Michigan
1. Mackinac Island, Michigan
Visitors to Mackinac island in the Straits of Mackinac (pronounced MACK-in-naw), between the Upper and Lower peninsulas about 285 mi/460 km north of Detroit, can step back in time. Autos may have made Michigan’s fortune, but they’re banned from this island—horse-drawn carriages, saddle horses, bicycles and walking are the only means of transportation.
Although many visitors see the island on a day trip, we recommend spending at least one night there. The lodging isn’t cheap (though you may find some bargains in early spring and late fall), but it’s worth it.
Once the throngs of day visitors depart, the island becomes even more like the 1800s: The streets are dark and largely empty, and the utter quiet is broken only by the occasional sound of clomping hooves. An overnight stay will also give you more time to see the island’s sights.
Monhegan Island, ME, Photography by Navin
2. Monhegan Island, Maine
Artists and urban-dwellers have been seeking refuge on Maine’s car-free Monhegan Island for years, drawn in by its rugged terrain and timeless solitude. Photographers will find Lobster Cove hard to resist, with its many flat rocks on which to set up shop and capture the surf and even a shipwreck. Anyone interested in learning about the history and culture of the area can head to the Monhegan Museum, set in what was once the home of the lighthouse keeper and showcasing the works of many local artists. In fact, an artists’ colony on the island has been in existence for more than 100 years, with several works available for purchase at the numerous artists’ studios – an artistic reminder of the island’s peace and tranquility is guaranteed to top the typical gift-shop coffee mug, hands down.
Catalina Island, Photography by Joyce Collins
3. Catalina Island, California
Catalina Island lies 22 mi/35 km off the Southern California coast, but it feels like a world away. Just the name conjures images of the quaint seaside village of Avalon, picture-perfect harbors and sandy beaches. Catalina is everything that Los Angeles is not—small-scale, nostalgic and slow-paced—and therein lies its charm.
Visitors often compare the island’s compact town of Avalon with Amalfi, Italy, or a resort town on France’s Cote d’Azur. Perhaps it’s those rocky palisades rising from the sea that suggest a Mediterranean locale. Or maybe it’s the tiled fountain, quaint storefronts, and the Moorish-style casino. Foreign visitors have been known to ask local shopkeepers whether they accept U.S. currency. In all, the island promises a delightful departure from urban inconveniences—the more so because Catalina, alone in Southern California, disdains the automobile.
Lake Erie Islands by David Fulmer
4. Lake Erie Islands, Ohio
Situated across from Cedar Point Amusement Park on Lake Erie, Put-In-Bay and Kelleys Island (part of Ohio’s collection of islands) do not require a rental car when visiting. While vehicles are permitted on the islands and can be transported via ferry, golf carts are actually the best way to get around. Since the carts can be used on actual roadways, a valid driver’s license is needed to drive one. Families will love carting around town to explore the caves, wineries, and lighthouse. Bikes and walking are also great ways to get around either town. And when it’s inevitably time to visit the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World,” you can ferry over to Cedar Point Marina with ease.
Bald Head Island, NC
5. Bald Head Island, North Carolina
Located at the tip of Cape Fear and accessible only by boat, Bald Head Island boasts a rich history — it played a part in two American wars and was once a pirate hideout for the likes of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet.
Today the island is still the most secluded of the Brunswick Islands, offering a quiet, picturesque vacation destination. It’s only reachable by ferry and no cars are permitted. In fact, more than 80 percent of Bald Head is conservation land where visitors can enjoy nature hikes and view sea-turtle nesting areas, but the only way to get around is by foot, golf cart or bicycle.
San Juan Islands, Washington, Photography by Jeff Gunn
6. San Juan Islands, Washington
These 172 spectacular islands—lodged between the Olympic Peninsula, northern Puget Sound and Vancouver Island, approximately 70 mi/115 km northwest of Seattle—are a must-see for any visitor to Washington. Fishing villages dot the coves, embracing a simpler time, and many artists reside on the islands, drawn by the scenery and solitude. At the very least, take the four-hour ferry ride through the archipelago. The boats depart from Anacortes.
Bald eagles and orcas frequent the cool waters of Puget Sound near the islands, and the west coast of San Juan Island is one of the best whale-watching points in the U.S. Sightings are most common in summer when orcas hunt in groups (called “pods”). You can sometimes spot whales from the shore at Lime Kiln State Park.
Go bike riding (Lopez Island is the best) along the winding coastal roads, and go beachcombing after storms. Keep an eye out for eagles, deer, seals, porpoises, and otters.
San Juan Island National Historical Park documents an anticlimactic clash between U.S. and British forces in the mid-1800s. The “Pig War” started over a hog and ended with a standoff that redrew boundary lines. Another possibility is the Whale Museum (phone 360-378-4710; http://www.whale-museum.org) in the village of Friday Harbor.
Orcas Island is the most scenic of the four ferry stops, with rolling hills and the 2,400-ft/730-m Mount Constitution. The mountain is the centerpiece of Moran State Park, a place of hiking trails, forests, and waterfalls.
Sea kayaking is another great way to see this part of the state and allows for up-close observation of the wildlife. The Cascadia Marine Trail, a 150-mi/240-km route from Olympia to the border with Canada, runs through the San Juans.
South Padre Island Fire Walk
7. South Padre Island, Texas
This 1.8-square-mile barrier island along the Texas Gulf Coast may be best known for its bawdy spring break ritual, but the island equally boasts experiences for couples, families, and just about everyone in between – all within a compact stretch of surf and sand.
The Island offers thousands of hotel rooms, motel rooms and condominiums to rent and all the amenities and recreational activities you could want at a beach resort — boating, swimming, fishing, surfing, sailboarding, beachcombing on long white beaches, birding, camping, in-line skating, parasailing, bungee jumping and eating and drinking. You could even sign the kids up for a sandcastle-building contest.
Side trips include visits to Matamoros, Mexico (across from Brownsville), or the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, a 7,000-acre/2,800-hectare marshland that’s home to thousands of waterfowl, as well as coyotes, javelina, bobcats, and deer.
Nantucket Historic District, Photography by Daryl Grider
8. Nantucket Island, Massachusettes
Not designed with cars in mind, Nantucket’s narrow cobblestone streets are best explored on foot or by bike. Follow the island’s winding lanes past historic clapboard homes of sea captains and pre-Civil War buildings – many of which are now home to boutiques and galleries, as well as the island’s famous Whaling Museum (housed in an 1847 candle factory).
The island sits at the confluence of two bodies of water, 30 mi/48 km out from the mainland. The north side faces the gentler waters of Nantucket Sound, its main harbor nestled within the protection of a barrier beach. Facing south and up around to the northwest are the more temperamental waters of the wild Atlantic Ocean.
At Nantucket’s northwestern peak, Great Point is the long swath of sand and stunning beach that ends where the waters meet, tangling together in frothy, dangerous tumult. For years, the island’s position demanded a life dependent on the sea, a legacy that continues to shape its fortune.
Visitors to Nantucket are drawn by the island’s rich and storied history and its distinct culture, shaped and beautifully preserved by its isolated location at sea. The entire island is a National Historic District because of its wealth of architecture dating back to the 18th century. There are more than 800 buildings on Nantucket that predate the Civil War, a distinction that even historic Boston can’t surpass.
Halibut Cove, Alaska, Photography by Andrew E. Russell
9. Halibut Cove, Alaska
Located in Alaska’s Kachemak Bay State Park, Halibut Cove is nestled among mountains, glaciers, and forests and is accessible only by boat. It’s home to just 38 people, according to the 2010 Census, and one of the only floating U.S. post offices is located here, along with a popular floating coffee shop. The cove is lined with stores, cabins and art galleries, which are also accessible only by boat, and you’re likely to see a variety of wildlife, including sea otters, harbor seals, and humpback whales.
Tangier Island Virginia Photography by J. Albert Bowden II
10. Tangier Island, Virginia
There are few cars — but plenty of golf carts — on this 3-mile-long island in the Chesapeake Bay. Boating, biking, crabbing, and kayaking are popular activities. Tangier Island truly feels like a world unto itself because of its isolated locale and its history. British forces used it as a staging ground during the War of 1812, and the island’s residents speak with a distinctive Cockney accent.
Daufuskie Island, South Carolina
11. Daufuskie Island, South Carolina
Without a bridge to the mainland and only a few paved roads, Daufuskie Island harkens back to a simpler time. This small wooded isle is located between Hilton Head, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., and is accessible only by boat. Golf carts and bicycles are the only forms of transportation on the island, but what makes Daufuskie truly unique is its Gullah population. Gullah are descendants of freed slaves, and the inhabitants’ culture is evident in the island’s food, music, and local art.
Although the island is mostly undeveloped, it does have a resort, two golf courses, and a local art gallery. White sand beaches, ancient oaks, Spanish moss and historical landmarks all lend a deep country feel, while the eclectic arts scene keeps the spirit of the island alive and thriving.
Smith Island Pelicans
12. Smith Island, Maryland
Smith Island is Maryland’s only inhabited offshore island in the Chesapeake Bay, but it’s actually composed of several islands. In the last 50 years, the island has lost more than 3,000 acres of wetlands due to erosion, and restoration efforts are underway to restore the island and prevent further erosion.
Smith Island is a good place to bicycle, listen to the gulls, watch sunsets and learn about the work of the Chesapeake Bay watermen. Residents have been harvesting seafood from the bay for generations (settlement began in 1657, and a bit of the original settlers’ English accent can still be heard in the voices of some of the 400 residents). There are no supermarkets, no police and little worry about crime.
An active fishing community that boasts some of the nation’s best crab cakes, the island is also the birthplace of the Smith Island Cake, which was declared Maryland’s state dessert in 2008. The famous dish features six-15 thin layers of cake filled with frosting — but locals say it’s the cooked chocolate icing that really makes the dessert unique.

DealBook Briefing: Tech’s Cold War Just Started
Good Monday. (Want this by email? Sign up here.)
U.S. tech companies cut off Huawei
Google, Qualcomm and Broadcom are among the companies that have reportedly frozen their supply of components and software to the Chinese technology giant to comply with a crackdown by the Trump administration.
• “Google has suspended business with Huawei that requires the transfer of hardware, software and technical services except those publicly available via open source licensing,” Reuters reported, citing unidentified sources.
• “Chipmakers including Intel, Qualcomm, Xilinx and Broadcom have told their employees they will not supply Huawei till further notice,” Bloomberg added, also citing unnamed sources.
The moves follow a Trump administration clampdown. The Commerce Department announced last week that U.S. companies would need special permission to sell some products to Huawei.
It’s not yet clear how long or deep the crackdown will be. Some commentators have said that it could be a short-lived part of U.S. trade war posturing. But the administration has been vocal about its concerns over possible threats to national security, and Huawei has said that it was prepared for being frozen out.
How the moves could hurt Huawei. Existing products would continue to receive Google updates, but future devices would have to use the open-source version of the operating system, without services like YouTube and Google Maps. The chip freeze-out means it might be forced to use its stockpile of U.S. components.
“We can now expect China to redouble efforts to roll out a homegrown smartphone operating system, design its own chips, develop its own semiconductor technology (including design tools and manufacturing equipment), and implement its own technology standards,” Tim Culpan of Bloomberg Opinion writes. “This can only accelerate the process of creating a digital iron curtain that separates the world into two distinct, mutually exclusive technological spheres.”
More: U.S. intelligence chiefs have warned American tech companies of the dangers of doing business in China. Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is doing something similar.
Deutsche Bank staff flagged activity in Trump and Kushner accounts
Anti-money laundering specialists at the German lender recommended in 2016 and 2017 that transactions involving Donald Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, be reported to a federal financial crimes watchdog, David Enrich of the NYT reports.
Transactions set off automated alerts designed to detect illicit activity, Mr. Enrich writes, citing current and former bank employees. Compliance staffers then prepared reports to send to the Treasury Department.
Executives rejected the recommendations, and the reports were never filed. The kinds of all-cash deals made by real estate developers like the Trump and Kushner families can prompt anti-money laundering reviews, and bank executives can choose not to report activity if they conclude employees’ concerns are unwarranted.
But the decisions reflected Deutsche Bank’s lax approach to money laundering laws, former employees told Mr. Enrich. They saw the move as part of the lender’s tendency to protect relationships with lucrative clients.
“It’s the D.B. way,” Tammy McFadden, a former Deutsche Bank anti-money laundering specialist who reviewed some of the transactions, told the NYT. “You present them with everything, and you give them a recommendation, and nothing happens.”
The billionaire paying off student loans
Robert F. Smith stunned 396 young men graduating yesterday from Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta, by announcing that he, America’s richest black man, would pay off all their student debt.
“We’re going to put a little fuel in your bus,” Mr. Smith, the commencement speaker, told the crowd. He later said, “Let’s make sure every class has the same opportunity going forward, because we are enough to take care of our own community.”
“This was a liberation gift, meaning this frees these young men from having to make their career decisions based on their debt,” David Thomas, the college president, told the NYT.
Mr. Smith “had become increasingly concerned in recent years about the degree to which students leave college saddled with heavy debts, including many at Morehouse,” the NYT reported, citing a person familiar with his thinking.
But details remain unsettled, including how students will demonstrate the amount of debt they have and how it will be paid off. Also unclear: the total amount Mr. Smith will contribute.
Mr. Smith built his fortune, estimated at $5 billion, through a career as a Goldman Sachs banker and as founder of Vista Equity Partners, a tech investment firm whose returns are believed to be among the best in private equity.
Trump scrapped some tariffs
As of today, U.S. tariffs on metal imports from Mexico and Canada have been lifted, Ana Swanson of the NYT reports
• That removes “a major irritant for two important allies that in exchange agreed to stop punishing American farmers with their own taxes on pork, cheese and milk.”
• President Trump also “postponed a decision on whether to impose tariffs on automobiles imported from Europe, Japan and other countries for six months.”
The U-turn is tied to the newly negotiated Nafta, called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. “Mr. Trump had described the tariffs as a source of leverage in negotiating a revision to that deal, which has yet to be ratified,” Ms. Swanson writes. “But both Republicans and Democrats had said they would not sign off on that deal until the White House removed metal tariffs on Canada and Mexico.”
Together, “the actions remove the threat of an all-encompassing global trade war and allow Mr. Trump to focus on pushing China to agree to the United States’ trade terms, as well as pressuring Europe and Japan to reach a trade deal before the 2020 election,” Ms. Swanson writes.
More: Big companies have tightened spending as trade fears intensify.
Cleaning up Facebook brings its A.I. whiz to tears
Facebook says artificial intelligence is a solution to its toxic content problems. Mike Schroepfer, its chief technology officer, says it won’t solve everything — and the scale of the problem has made him cry, Cade Metz and Mike Isaac of the NYT report.
• Mr. Schroepfer “is the person at Facebook leading the efforts to build the automated tools to sort through and erase the millions of such posts. But the task is Sisyphean, he acknowledged over the course of three interviews.”
• “Every time Mr. Schroepfer and his more than 150 engineering specialists create A.I. solutions that flag and squelch noxious material, new and dubious posts that the A.I. systems have never seen before pop up — and are thus not caught.”
• “In two of the interviews, he started with an optimistic message that A.I. could be the solution, before becoming emotional. At one point, he said coming to work had sometimes become a struggle. Each time, he choked up when discussing the scale of the issues that Facebook was confronting and his responsibilities in changing them.”
• “I do think there’s an endgame here,” Mr. Schroepfer said, adding: “I don’t think it’s ‘everything’s solved,’ and we all pack up and go home.”
New York’s predatory taxi industry
Brian Rosenthal of the NYT takes a deep dive into how bankers and officials made money from the sale of New York City taxi medallions, even as lending turned predatory and Uber and Lyft devastated many drivers.
What the bankers did:
• “Between 2002 and 2014, the price of a medallion rose to more than $1 million from $200,000, even though city records showed that driver incomes barely changed.”
• “The investigation found example after example of drivers trapped in exploitative loans, including hundreds who signed interest-only loans that required them to pay exorbitant fees, forfeit their legal rights and give up almost all their monthly income, indefinitely.”
What city officials did:
• “For more than a decade, the agencies reduced oversight of the taxi trade, exempted it from regulations, subsidized its operations and promoted its practices, records and interviews showed.”
• Under the Bloomberg and de Blasio administrations, New York City “made more than $855 million by selling taxi medallions and collecting taxes on private sales, according to the city.”
• “When the medallion market collapsed, the government largely abandoned the drivers who bore the brunt of the crisis. Officials did not bail out borrowers or persuade banks to soften loan terms.”
‘Game of Thrones’ is over. What now for HBO?
The series finale for “Game of Thrones” concluded a major TV phenomenon. But HBO has a plan to move on from its hit, Gerry Smith of Bloomberg reports.
• HBO plans to increase its original programming 50 percent this year, “creating more chances for another blockbuster,” Mr. Smith writes.
• Shows in the pipeline include adaptations of the graphic novel “Watchmen” as well as “His Dark Materials,” the series of fantasy novels by Philip Pullman.
But “Game of Thrones” sets a high bar. The penultimate episode drew 18.4 million viewers across all HBO platforms.
“The finale was a mass live-viewing experience of the kind that is now almost unheard for serialized television — or almost any TV program that isn’t the Super Bowl,” John Jurgenson of the WSJ writes.
Replicating that in the streaming era will be difficult. Mr. Smith points out that “about 500 scripted TV shows” are fighting for attention.

How to Get a 6 Month Car Lease No Deposit
6 Month Car Lease No Deposit
Do you have to put a deposit down when leasing a car? No, you don’t. A $0 down payment is more affordable than an auto loan. Buyers usually pay 20-30% of the car’s price upfront. That means putting most of your savings into a car that you most likely won’t own after five years. Let’s look at how a 6 month car lease no deposit works.
1. Special promotions
When an auto manufacturer intends to launch a new series of either a saloon or SUV, they’ll use the first model to get feedback. This information enables them to create relevant features for upcoming editions. So, the company will launch the car with a no deposit lease option for buyers looking for short-term commitment.
You might also run into a new car dealership near you that’s offering no money down leases for a specified period. The main intention is gaining some market share in new terrain. As a buyer, you get to pay better monthly payments since the new seller wants you to market them by word of mouth.
2. Full-time deals
Due to the high demand for cars, some dealerships offer $0 deposit car leases every day. These usually are medium or large-sized brands have been in the industry for at least 10 years. Such dealerships generate high profits that enable them to offer this service consistently.
Buyers have more car options than in a special promotion because the auto manufacturer limits you to a specific model. When you become a frequent customer, the dealership might book the latest cars for you at no extra cost.
3. What do you need to get this type of auto lease?
1. An excellent credit score
Car dealerships offer no money down leases to buyers with credit ratings ranging from 680 to 850. Such a high score indicates that a buyer has experience taking on similar credit in his or her past. It’s also a strong indicator of high financial stability.
2. Meet the gross monthly income requirement
Each dealership has a monthly income requirement in order to filter out buyers with a high likelihood of default. Buyers have to prove their financial stability by presenting their pay stubs and tax returns.
3. Have a low debt-to-income ratio
Debt-to-income ratio refers to the percentage of your monthly debt payments compared to your gross salary. If someone makes $5,000 a month but his or her debt payments amount to $2,500, the debt to income ratio is 50%. That’s quite unsafe.
Dealerships mostly focus on buyers whose debt to income ratio is below 40%.
4. Driving license
Presenting your driving license enables the dealership to verify your identity. It also allows you to go on test drives, unlike unlicensed drivers.
4. What are the pros?
1. Ideal for people who’ve relocated to a new area temporarily
Assume you’re a doctor based in New Mexico working in the public health sector. You get a notice informing you to relocate to Atlanta in the next 30 days. In this situation, you can let your wife have the car and you’ll get a new one once you settle down in your new workstation.
It’s a better alternative to saving for another car because one ends up tying a lot of their money on car payments. You also get to choose the car that’s suitable for that environment. You’re better off in an SUV while working in a remote area than using a saloon.
2. More affordable than an auto loan
When your planning for an auto loan, one needs to pay 20-30% of a car’s price in order to get financing. If a buyer has bad credit, they pay expensive interest rates. This type of financing discourages many people from buying their dream cars.
A $0 deposit lease allows you to make your dreams come true because you don’t need to pay such a high down payment similar to an auto loan. The interest rates are friendly thanks to your excellent credit rating.
3. Access to new and used cars
Leasing gives you access to a variety of new cars. If you love small cars, you can use this approach to get a new 2018 Honda Fit or Nissan Versa. They’re among the best-rated subcompact cars and you can get to try both once your first lease expires.
If you’re planning to downgrade to a more affordable car that doesn’t guzzle fuel, you can still get a good quality used car. The monthly payments are lower than a new car due to depreciation in the car’s value.
Trading in your car
4. Best option if you’re planning a transition
A zero deposit car lease enables you to step out of your familiarity zone. If you’ve driven saloons all your life, perhaps it’s time to experience what owning an SUV feels like. It’s not a long-term commitment because you’re just signing up for six months.
Sampling allows you to learn how to manage a bigger car through practical experience. Doing this helps you to know the mistakes to avoid so that you can minimize repair expenses when you buy a similar car. For instance, learning how to pack a big vehicle between two cars requires a lot of practice.
How to qualify for an auto loan
5. Low car maintenance expenses
Buying a new car gives one confidence in knowing that all parts are in excellent condition. You won’t experience any problems or have to do any replacements. Car batteries last at least three years, which means that there’s no likelihood of you buying a new battery during the lease period.
On the other hand, an auto loan puts a toll on your pockets. You’ll have to purchase a new set of tires because they wear out after two years. After covering 25,000 miles, you need to replace your brake pads. The auto finance company won’t deduct these expenses from your next monthly payment.
Suggested topic: Car repossession
5. What are the cons?
1. Penalties for excess mileage
Signing up for a lease also means obligating to a long list of rules. It’s worse than borrowing your friend’s car because they won’t bother to check the odometer. Car dealerships, on the other hand, limit your freedom of movement by setting a maximum mileage limit.
What happens when a buyer exceeds their limit? The car dealership fines them for every excess mile. The rate can be as high as $50. If you use the car one week after your hitting your cap, the fines can be enough for two monthly payments.
2. You pay for scratches
Car dealerships usually do thorough inspections when buyers return leased cars. The inspector notes every crack, scratch, and tear no matter how small. Lenders expect you to pay for these damages even though they’re virtually negligible. This is why some people complain about hidden costs at the end of their leases.
Are these costs avoidable? Certainly not. Even if you drive your car just once or twice a week and keep it inside an enclosed parking spot, the inspector will always spot damage. This can ruin your leasing experience permanently.
3. Expensive monthly payments
When the deal sounds enticing, there’s always a catch behind it. A zero deposit lease deal sounds fantastic because everyone believes that they can get better cars using this option. Once the dealership baits you in, they slap you in the face with costly monthly payments.
These high payments don’t contribute to your equity. You’ll still walk away just the same way you came inside the dealership. Auto loan payments bring you closer towards full ownership and they build your credit score as well.
Suggested read: Credit score and insurance premiums
Is it worth it?
This type of financing is ideal for someone looking to own a car temporarily. It’s an advisable option when you want to upgrade to a luxury car. By owning a Mercedes for 6 months, you’ll learn the best cleaners for your interior and good mechanics in town.

NASHVILLE, Tenn | Tennessee GOP gov race turns to spat over Trump, immigration

NASHVILLE, Tenn | Tennessee GOP gov race turns to spat over Trump, immigration
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Loyalty to President Donald Trump tops the Republican checklist in the governor’s race in Tennessee, right up there with championing gun rights and low taxes and decrying abortion.
In TV ads and debates, the four leading GOP candidates are lauding Trump and his wall-building immigration crackdown while blasting each other as insufficiently supportive of the president.
It’s been a pricey message: The four have added $33 million in combined personal wealth to their campaigns and spent about that much, setting records and more than doubling what they’ve raised through donations.
And their strategy continues ahead of the Aug. 2 primary despite scandals swirling around the White House, because even though Trump’s approval ratings are low overall, he remains highly popular among Republican voters in national polls.
Republican Gov. Bill Haslam warned the GOP candidates in a letter, saying: “No offense intended, but a lot of what was talked about during the campaign will not be the issues that end up on your desk as governor.”
The biggest spenders say they’re simply addressing voter concerns.
“One of the first questions people will ask me is, ‘What is your position on supporting the president? What is your position on immigration?'” said Randy Boyd, a former economic development commissioner. “Once we can answer that for them, then we can talk to them about education, about jobs, about helping our rural communities, about getting broadband, about health care.”
U.S. Rep. Diane Black agreed, pointing to TV ads promoting her work on Trump’s tax law and her proximity to the president.
“We’ll have plenty of time after we get out of this primary to talk again more about what we’re going to do for the state of Tennessee, when I’m talking about things and opposing myself with a Democrat candidate,” she said.
In other ads, Boyd and Bill Lee cast themselves as Trump-style businessmen, while House Speaker Beth Harwell, the field’s only medical marijuana supporter, replays Trump’s 2015 comments that “medical should happen.”
A growing number of Republicans have criticized Trump for his appearance with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his reluctance to acknowledge Russian interference in his election.
Republican leaders in Congress distanced themselves from Trump’s invitation for Putin to visit Washington, saying he’s not welcome on Capitol Hill.
But Black and her rivals are showing no hint of disloyalty.
The “left wing just wants to find something to jump all over our president,” Black told Fox Business Network after sitting next to Trump as he tried to clarify his comments on Russian interference.
“He was strong when he was there in Europe and also with Putin and I’m very proud of him and his strength.”
Former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, who has outspent former House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh on the Democratic side, said the governor’s race “is not a referendum on President Trump.”
“Clearly, on the Republican side, you see that in the ads, and the candidates must have made a determination that they think appealing or tying themselves to President Trump is a positive thing.
But I think about what Gov. Haslam said … he said those really aren’t the issues that a governor deals with here,” Dean said.
Polls suggest a close 3-way race between Black, Boyd and Lee, with Harwell not out of it. Lee’s campaign grew more competitive as he talked about his farm, his business and his relationship with Jesus Christ, and now Black and Boyd are hitting at him.
“I figured I’d better tell you why,” a Lee ad says. “We’re winning, and they’re scared.”
On immigration, Boyd’s team accuses Lee of leading a group that lobbied for amnesty; Lee chaired the state chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors in 1999, before the group’s national team supported permanent residency for people here illegally in the 2000s.
Boyd’s campaign also targeted Black’s 2016 reaction to candidate Trump’s promise to make Mexico fund a border wall: She said “first of all, you can’t build a wall, that won’t work.” Boyd also criticizes Black’s vote for a 2001 state law that allowed people without Social Security numbers to have driver’s licenses. Black co-sponsored a failed repeal in 2002 and voted in 2004 to only offer one-year driving certificates, a program scrapped in 2006. Harwell voted for the 2001 and 2004 laws, too.
Candidate Black has padded her “tough-on-immigration” resume, introducing bills to crowd-fund the wall and make illegal crossings a felony, and claims her “can’t build a wall” comments meant that a wall alone won’t secure the border. She said she’s voted for border wall money 11 times.
Black paints Boyd, meanwhile, as weak on immigration for donating $250,000 in 2016 to Conexion Americas, which opposed anti-sanctuary legislation and supports in-state tuition for students whose parents brought or kept them here illegally. Boyd’s donation, however, paid to expand a commercial kitchen for culinary entrepreneurs.
Black also said Boyd’s pet product company, Radio Systems Corp., avoided paying millions in taxes, albeit legally, by structuring its business internationally. Boyd said he doesn’t think people want “a governor that encourages people to pay more taxes than they’re legally required,” and said his company paid $97 million in the last 12 years, a 34.77 percent tax rate.
Boyd and Black both targeted Lee for donating to Dean and other Democrats; Lee calls those business decisions by his mechanical contracting firm.
Harwell had some fun with her ad, dressing children as Lee, Boyd and Black. While they bicker, she says she’s delivered on low taxes, balanced budgeting and outlawing sanctuary cities.
“There’s no swamp here,” said Harwell. “We’re doing everything right in the state of Tennessee.”

[John K. Ross] Short Circuit: A roundup of recent federal court decisions
Please enjoy the latest edition of Short Circuit, a weekly feature from the Institute for Justice.
New on the podcast: the checkmate doctrine, the right to pre-indictment counsel, and an Uber antitrust action. Featuring special guest William C. Marra of Cooper & Kirk, who wields words like a blade and also literally owns a sword. Click here for iTunes.
For years, a Texas electric utility company and its union feuded over the installation of automated smart meters; the company wanted them; the union didn't, fearing they would put meter-readers out of work. A repairman for the company testifies to state legislators that the smart meters are combustion prone and damaging homes. Company: Which isn't true. You're fired. NLRB: Can't fire him. His testimony was protected union activity. D.C Circuit: Maybe not. We're very deferential to the Board, but even so, the NLRB's reasoning here is "too opaque."
Syracuse, N.Y. officials have a policy of cutting off water service to tenants when their landlord fails to pay the water bill. But, says the Second Circuit, there's no rational basis for punishing innocent third parties in the hopes of inducing their derelict landlords to pay.
A man and a woman work in neighboring Manhattan buildings but had never met until, "as often happens on crowded New York streets, [their] paths crossed." The start of an unlikely romance? No. She steps on his heel as he's crossing in front of her; they altercate. The woman presses charges; the man gets arrested. Yikes! Surveillance video shows that she, contrary to what she told police, was the initial aggressor, kicking, scratching, hitting, and threatening him, and not acting in self-defense. Second Circuit: So she can pay him $15k (including $10k in punitive damages).
Third Circuit: Consensual sexting between teenagers is a crime of moral turpitude that can get you deported. So petitioner, a 49-year-old caught with child porn, is definitely deportable.
Sixteen-year-old Elizabeth, N.J. drug gang enforcer ordered 1989 murder, is convicted of racketeering. Third Circuit: His sentence, which is essentially life without parole (he won't be released until he's 72), violates the Eighth Amendment.
Low-IQ drifter confesses to killing two gay men three days apart in 1980. He's convicted of first murder, acquitted of the second. Decades later, DNA exculpates him of the second murder, but DNA from the first no longer exists. Fifth Circuit: New trial. Evidence of innocence, like a third party's fingerprints at the scene (which was withheld from the defense) and a detective's propensity for beating suspects, is ample. Dissent: A finding that a convict is actually innocent isn't enough to grant him relief; he still has to prove that his rights were violated and that deference to the state court is out of line.
Man buys 144 grenades (from undercover ATF agent) intended for use in Mexico. Man: Since 143 of them were actually duds, I should have been sentenced as if I only bought one. Fifth Circuit (in the inaugural federal opinion by Judge Willett): Nope. The sentencing court properly considered what the man pursued, not what he procured.
Allegation: Sixteen-year-old (whose friend shoplifted a jacket) initially flees from Opelousas, La. police, but lays down. An officer slaps him, knees him, cuffs him, and then shoves him against a police car. District court: That's not excessive force. Fifth Circuit: Actually, there's enough evidence of excessive force to let the case move forward.
After early release from prison, former Colerain Township, Ohio high school teacher seeks to challenge her conviction for sex offense with a student in federal court, as well as requirement that she register as a sex offender for life. Sixth Circuit: Even though the consequences flowing from her conviction are "'grievous collateral consequences,'" they are not severe restraints on her liberty that would allow us to hear her appeal.
FBI agents shoot suspect dead in his home while executing a warrant (to look for child porn). Agents: He ignored repeated orders to drop a gun, and we only shot when we saw him remove it from a holster. Suspect's wife: The agents (who broke my nose when they kicked in the door) didn't identify themselves, never issued any such orders, and caused the volatile situation that they say justifies the shooting. Sixth Circuit (over a dissent): She can't sue.
Who steals credit card data? Scoundrels, says Judge Easterbrook of the Seventh Circuit. Moreover, bookstore customers who spent money on credit monitoring services, lost access to their cards briefly, and had to deal with the aggravation of the breach should not have had their class action against the store dismissed.
In most of Illinois, school boards are elected. In Chicago, the mayor appoints the board. Plaintiffs: Which deprives Chicago residents of their right to vote, disproportionately affecting blacks and Hispanics. Seventh Circuit: Neither a violation of the Equal Protection Clause or the Voting Rights Act.
Tigers and lemurs! Wolves and cougars! A Manchester, Iowa zoo must relinquish its endangered species to a facility that can properly care for them, says the Eighth Circuit. (After all, the zoo only provided a single bowling ball to entertain the tigers, and the lemur cage only contained one log to climb on.) But the activists who sued the zoo under the Endangered Species Act are not entitled to costs and fees, which they are pursuing in order to force the zoo to close altogether—in order to protect the zoo's non-endangered species, which is not what the Act is meant to do. (Though it seems the feds have forced the zoo to close.)
Fresno County, Calif. school system pays female math consultant less than male counterparts. Ninth Circuit (2017): The counterparts' salaries at previous jobs were higher than hers, so it's not necessarily unlawful. Ninth Circuit (en banc, authored by the late Judge Reinhardt): Nope. Any consideration of prior pay by employers who use a formula to set salaries (as opposed to individualized negotiations) violates the Equal Pay Act of 1963. Concurrences: Maybe prior pay can be part of the consideration.
California suspends the driver's license of a taxpayer who makes it onto the list of the state's top 500 delinquent taxpayers—which may not be the tops for the lucky few who make the list, but which the Ninth Circuit says is perfectly constitutional.
Tenth Circuit: Qualified immunity for Hutchinson, Kan. police who pummeled a disarmed and allegedly unresisting (but not yet restrained) suspect and choked him unconscious. But no qualified immunity for pummeling and choking him out a second time—after he was handcuffed and zip-tied.
And in en banc news, the Ninth Circuit will not reconsider its denial of qualified immunity to social workers who removed children from their home after their parents took post-bath-time photos of "their cute little butts." Nor will the Eleventh Circuit reconsider its grant of qualified immunity to police who shot a man in the back, killing him, in his home.
Does the First Amendment protect those who wish to privately teach or learn a useful skill? No, says a federal judge for the Eastern District of California. Last year, the Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School (PCHS) had to turn away 26-year-old Esteban Narez because California law prohibits teaching "vocational" skills to most students who lack a high‑school diploma—which Esteban never obtained due to a major injury his senior year. The law applies even though PCHS doesn't accept any government loans and Esteban's savings would have covered tuition. Because teaching is speech, the Institute for Justice teamed up with PCHS and Esteban to challenge the law under the First Amendment. IJ will appeal the judge's dismissal up to the Ninth Circuit. Read more about the case here.

Auto Insurance Coverage - How much coverage should I buy?
Next week, I'll be switching to another auto insurance. My previous limits with another company were: -minimum MD state 20/40/15 for Bodily Injury, Uninsured Motorist, and property damage -PIP $2500 -250/500 for Comprehensive/Collision, had road service, towing, and rental. I don't have many assets. I'm a renter and I live from paycheck to paycheck. I have no accidents, no tickets, and no violations for the last 8 years. I'm a cautious driver. I drive a 2003 Honda Civic. Why is insurance so expensive?
I don't know if it depends on what state we live in but I live in Arizona and my parents used to have insurance for everything like auto and health. My parents were legal immigrants from Mexico since 1987 in Los Angeles, California until we moved to Arizona around the early 1990s(I don't know if that also has anything to do with insurance but I guess it does with money). I'm thinking about using my 63 year old Godmother who's the original signer on the car because she doesn't have any tickets or accidents so I figured the full coverage would be cheap in her name. She's the one who signed for my car anyway. I'm the cosigner, but she's totally cool with putting the insurance in her name if it saves me money. So, four questions... 1) How much would insurance cost for me? 2) How much would insurance cost for my Godmother? 3) What's the cheapest insurance carrier? 4) What's the average for a full coverage sports car? So yeah, I'm FULL of questions :D Feedback is appreciated, merci! BQ) Who do you have insurance with? BQ2) What kind of vehicule do you have? <3""

600cc sports bike good for a beginner? gsxr600 or zx6r?
ive never ridin a motorrcycle before and im looking at getting a gsx-r600 or zx6r. Im taking the safety course which is 10 hours of riding and 5 of classes which i realize isnt a lot. I drive stick shift cars so i get the point of shifting the bike. Ive ridin a dirtbike once and quads once but i seem to be a natural on anything with a motor so im not nervous at all about getting a racing bike starting. A lot of people say a 600 is to big for a first bike but i know people that have them and say they arent that bad as long as you dont drive it like an asshole. I plan on really taking it veryyyyy easy the first summer out and not pushing anything untill i feel extremly comfortable with it. My question is should i get this for a first bike? Im not getting a 250 dont even bother with that. Ive seen the 650's which are more begginer friendly but i just feel ill outgrow that within the first year and ill lose my money by selling it and buying a 600 instead of getting the 600 in the first place
How much would the cost of my father's car insurance increase if I became a young named driver?
I'm currently 19, approaching 20 and haven't started my lessons yet. It has been arranged that if and when I pass I will be put on as a additional named driver on his insurance. He must have a significant no claims bonus and the car is about 6 years old. The car would not be considered sporty/powerful. I know you can't give me an exact number but if anyone has gone through this how much did your premiums increase by? And/or on a percentage scale how much this would likely increase.""
Car Insurance in CA with AZ vehicle?
Ok so I have a multi part question. My dad is about to get his car reposed. He lives in Phoenix AZ and obviously bought the car there. Its not under his name yet cause hes still paying for it. So he wants me to take over the payments and give me the car. I live in Los Angeles. So my question is, can I get insurance here in Cali even though its a AZ car and its still under the peoples name? If not, he can get insurance there. Also, isn't there a period of time an out of state car can be here being out off state still? What should I do? I don't want to get all sorts of fines or tickets. Car accident in dad's car. What will the insurance cover? Should I get a lawyer?
I was involved in a 3 car accident. The car behind me hit me twice (once on the back right and once on the side as he swerved and lost control) causing me to hit the car in front of me. I was driving my dad's car for the summer because I'm doing an internship away from home. Since my dad's car is useless now, I needed to get a rental car. I would also like to get some medical expenses covered because I am experiencing back and neck pain. My questions are: Will the other person's insurance cover the cost of the rental car although the car is not mine but I am the one using it for the summer? And should I get a lawyer to handle this situation? (Also, my dad is 8 hours away from here and the car is still in the tow lot since I am staying at an extended stay hotel and have no where to keep the car.)""

Uninsured Motorcycle Driver Question?
Recently a friend of mine wanted to purchase a motorcycle that he found a super great deal on. Because his credit is very average he asked me to purchase the cycle and he would make me payments plus interest. I agreed and took out a loan for the bike. However a few weeks later he decided it would be ok to take the bike out for a spin UNINSURED. He had a run in with several trick or treaters and their parents. Since it was an unlit road, they were in the middle, and he was going under the speed limit. The cops ruled it not his fault. However now two insurance companies are coming after me to subrogate the liabilities. Since he was the driver but I am the owner. What are my rights? Can they still blame him? Am I liable?""

Ignition lock repair
When the vehicle doesnt light up, there might be plenty of troubles which might be the source. Since the combustible system and car battery are coupled with the ignition, the problem might be difficult to inspect by a non-experience hands, but below are a few frequent troubles, which you might have to deal with.
</p> <h5>ignition key is stiffly turning</h5> <p> If the key wont turn in the ignition lock, it might be for a few reasons: Frequently this occurs when the steering sized by the ignition cylinder with the car front wheels shift aside (when you park up a hill) or if one of a two front wheels is pushed against something (e.g. curb stone). In this case, try shifting the steering wheel to the sides right and left during mildly shake right and left the ignition key - which may help to release the steering column.
</p> <h5>Dead car battery</h5> <p> Another typical reason why your ignition cylinder may go bad is a problem with the vehicle power supply. An empty car battery may happens because of electronic wiring or alternator failure. If the dashboard lights will not turn on when you turn the key, apparently you better call a vehicle mechanic shop.
The ignition switch is remarkably critical systems of any vehicle and consisting of manifold tiny detachments that might be difficult to inspect by a non-experience hands, so the best an owner can do running into ignition switch or key issues is to ensure you’re actually trying to turn on your very own vehicle and call a car keysmith to come out to your premise to reprogram, repair rekey the ignition or key which will priced as approximately $160–$360.
Transponder chipped key generate

When the chipped key is put in the ignition break, the chip send a unique signal for the vehicle computer unit to be verified. Without this exact signal, the car will not light up.
When GMC owner lose or want to duplicate his key, the chip must be programmed with the same key-code to be identified by the car computer.
Several vehicle producers models and years feed dashboard outline for duplication of keys, but if all keys are missing, the car main computer must be reprogrammed by suitable programming machine owned by a locksmith or the dealer.

Eminently all smart-keys incorporate a proximity detector structure that is turned on when the key-less entry located within a specific range of the vehicle. This Key-less entry are passive meaning that the car can be unlocked and locked or decommission and burst the ignition without owners input.
Copy vs lost car keys
Modernized GMC key and lock instrumentation contains transponder key and car immobiliser and though chipped keys come in an array of proximity key, flipkey, high security and key-fob keys, the preeminent concept behind this structure is that the transponder deliver a message to the receiver in the car.
