The Thar desert found in India. Most of it is found in the state of Rajasthan (Kings Land - Land of Kings), with parts stretching into Pakistan, the Indian state of Gujurat, Punjab, and Haryana. There is a unique tradition there in the city of Bikaner - the camel festival.
Some architecture from the area:
This is an utterly beautiful place in the world and just one of so many gems India has to offer. Bikaner has a nifty history of being an oasis trade path through central Asia and Gujurat.

In India, the camel festival is one of the most beautiful and memorable events in the country. The festival is taking place in the Indian city of Bikaner in the state of Rajasthan. Bikaner is located in the Thar desert and is famous for the fact that it is the only camel farm in India.
The highlight of this holiday is the original camel carving. Wool carving (the so-called artistic camel shearing) is an art that requires not only a high level of professionalism and certain skills, but also endless patience. Camels are sheared in a special way, creating exquisite patterns on the body. It takes about three years for the owner of the animal to create such an original hairstyle. For the first two years, while the camel's hair grows, it is only trimmed and prepared. And in the third year, when the wool grows to the desired length, before the start of the festival it is carefully cut in the form of various ornaments on the camel's back, sides and neck. Moreover, all this is done only manually, using ordinary scissors.
Some happy owners do not stop there either – they selectively tint the ends of their hair in a darker color so that the pattern looks more spectacular and more relief. So it turns out to be a real work of art, a living carpet with patterns of amazing beauty. Camels are also decorated with various colorful accessories for the beauty contest.

Beauty of the Desert
The Schokari sand racer is a snake known for its whip-fast speed and agility: their pursuits can reach up to 10mph (16km/h). Here, a sand racer moves through a shrub in north-west India’s Thar desert. Despite its inhospitable climate, the desert is a refuge for a variety of endemic and endangered species, including the critically endangered great Indian bustard, the mugger crocodile and the phog shrub sheltering this sand racer.

Permaculture Instructor Andrew Millison travels to the Thar Desert in Rajasthan India to see the 40 year water harvesting and community development projects spearheaded by Gramin Vikas Vigyan Samiti (GRAVIS). We spent several days touring the Thar Desert projects of GRAVIS, and found incredible inspiration in the deep resilience of that harsh and dry region.
DISCLAIMER: The wet season footage was filmed closer to Jaipur, which is a slightly wetter region of Rajasthan. So for those of you who are very familiar with the Thar Desert ecosystem, you may notice the trees are a little bit bigger and more dense on the land then you find West of the Arvari Hills.

The Great Raan of Kutch, one of the largest salt marsh deserts...in the woooooooooooooorld!
At twilight, you might be greeted with skies of soft rose quarts and washed amethysts.
This magical place is found in the Thar Desert in Gujarat India.
Once, this beautiful part of the world was part of the Arabian Sea as a large and long set of shallows. Over time, the slow geological uplift (what's also responsible for other parts of India - hi Himalayas), cut off the Raan and turned it into a still navigable lake. Then...with time, it began to dry.

In the Thar Desert of northwestern India in Rajasthan researchers found “a large number” of spiders they didn’t recognize. They named it Oecobius thar, or the Thar Desert wall spider.
The female Oecobius were also seen using a “dynamic strategy” to hunt ants and flies. They quickly tie up their prey to immobilize it before killing it.

Dust from Thar Desert significantly impacts glaciers on Tibetan Plateau: Study
The Thar desert dust, lifted by updrafts from northwest India, was subsequently transported by westerlies, exerting a significant influence on the southern glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau, they said.

NEW DELHI: Glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau are greatly affected by dust from the Thar Desert in India due to the influence of terrain and westerly winds, according to a study.
Dust deposited on a glacier’s surface can reduce the albedo — fraction of light that is reflected by a surface — of the ice and increase absorption of solar radiation, which has a significant impact on glacier melting and global climate change.
Accurately identifying the source of glacial dust on the Tibetan Plateau is critical for comprehending dynamics of glacial environment and reconstructing regional atmospheric environment, the researchers said.
The study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Pollution Research, determined dust sources for the three glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau and analysed the transport mechanism of the primary dust sources.
The researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences used two tracer methods to ascertain the origins of glacial dust and deduced that the dust primarily originated from the Tibetan Plateau surface soils, Thar Desert, Qaidam Basin, and Taklimakan Desert, both in China, before the monsoon season.
The Taklimakan Desert and Thar Desert were identified as the most prominent dust sources, they said.
Central and southern glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau were greatly affected by dust from the Thar Desert and Taklimakan Desert due to the influence of terrain and westerly winds, the researchers said.
The Thar desert dust, lifted by updrafts from northwest India, was subsequently transported by westerlies, exerting a significant influence on the southern glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau, they said.
“Our study provides a valuable reference for future efforts to analyze glacier element characteristics and reconstruct climate,” said Li Yuefang, corresponding author of this study.
