if you’re still doing the ask game – i really liked how you incorporated different readings of dahlia in your most recent fic (i thought it was very cool how it could be read as analogous to audience interpretation of a fictional character, which works especially well for a polarizing character like dahlia). was there anything in particular that made you want to explore this idea? do you have any director’s commentary on it?
hello yes!! i absolutely have MANY thoughts on the topic and would love to give some director’s commentary
the thing about dahlia hawthorne & mia fey are dead is that initial versions of it were way different than what it ultimately turned into. mind you, it was always going to be written as a play, always set vaguely in the afterlife, and always involved mia and dahlia speaking and trying to get to the bottom of why dahlia did what she did. but these earlier versions were a lot less meta, and stuck much closer to a single interpretation of her character that was eventually uncovered throughout the work**. the placeholder title was “theaters of cruelty” and i was drawing a lot more from no exit than rosencrantz & guildenstern are dead; one idea of mine was to maybe follow a psychelock structure and ultimately get down to the core of dahlia’s issues that way. obviously, this did not end up happening
so i ultimately went in a different direction, because the thing is that in the process of trying to get at the core of “why is dahlia like this” i kept running into the same issue: we don’t really ever get anything approaching a definitive answer to that question in the game itself—we get implication, the interpretations of other characters, we get a few things that dahlia tells us herself (if we can trust them), but nothing that ever feels truly substantial or complete to me. and in most cases this wouldn’t be THAT big of an issue—this is fanfic, the whole point is filling in the gaps with your own interpretation. so i tried to fight against the issue at first, create my own interpretation use that, but it never felt quite right, always like i was forcing it. i think creating and sticking to a single interpretation would have been easier for me to do had i been writing in prose, because that’s a medium where the world and the characters often feel more concrete to me in some way, it’s a place where it feels more necessary to stick to a single interpretation/version of reality. but in theater, at least for me, there’s this greater conscientiousness of the medium and its inherent unreality, especially since i tend toward a more metatheatrical mode in both what ive written and what i like to read—there’s a much stronger sense of the characters as characters, and as potential actors in/directors of their story. so eventually instead of fighting against the lack of finality in dahlia’s arc by imposing my own interpretation, i decided to embrace the problem as the actual subject of the piece
because ultimately i think what i realized in the process of writing the early drafts is that the tragedy of dahlia to me is not so much whatever deep dark secret that lurks inside her and makes her act the way she does, it’s the fact that she’s never given that full interiority in the first place. if we want that interiority we can’t look to the text, we have to invent her out of the scraps we’re given, which leads to such a wide variety of interpretations. and then we decide on which version of girl we prefer, but no version will ever be more correct, only more convincing, and we have to make peace with that as members of the audience.
but we as the audience also get to make peace with that. much like in rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, i wanted to highlight that there’s an absurd tragedy to being a character in a story, and more so to being an incomplete character in a story that’s not about you. the tragedy of the character dahlia hawthorne is that even if she wanted it, she could never get true closure about why she acts the way she does. there’s no answer! it’s all interpretation
anyway, i hope that responded to your question! thank you for the ask and letting me ramble about this!
**as an example of how different my approach to the character was in each version, compare dahlia’s introduction:
from an early draft: “In center stage, on a white couch, sits THE GHOST OF DAHLIA HAWTHORNE. Around her neck hangs an ill-fitting noose, and her neck is decorated by a collar of bruises/rope-burn, the moment of her death tattooed onto her phantasmal form. She wears a light blue prisoner’s uniform and her hair is a mess, braids falling loose. Her hands are stained with blood.] [In her hands she holds a picture frame, grip tight. We can’t see what’s in it.]”
vs the final version: “Enter DAHLIA HAWTHORNE. She is a beautiful young woman, and gives the appearance of never having been anything else. She wears the white silk dress she has always worn, although without the accessories she has always carried— no shawl, no parasol, no shoes. She walks to center stage, and takes a seat in the empty chair: the witness stand.”

ah, because ur fic inspired a lot, but in the same vain of me doodling all that, ehhhh here?
i did some of my own stuff/au, but hey, especially after the past days, maybe these can cheer u up. Ur fic really eats my brain from time to time, it's so good.
second solo-Marc is a statue of him, which is why there aren't scars. The one with Vale lounging behind Marc is inspired by Venus and Marc by Mars
hope u have better day, good job on getting free Krapfen and adopted ✌️
Not joking when I say I stared at these for whole minutes ohhhhhh my god. As mentioned by many, things are kind of bad right now, and not to be too serious in the face of the sheer cunt being served here but I love fic community and fanartists. And specifically this is the a great thing for a zine fic, u know? It’s designed to be played with and illustrated and what-if-ed and I’m so happy you liked it and drew it 😭😭😭
Also Marc’s neck in the second one is going 2 haunt me. His lidded gaze from beyond Vale’s shoulder!! Worst power couple (and power-divorce) in history!! I wish u so many good things
#Leah battling thru hosting the summer zine fest the first little domino currently culminating in me experiencing some healing thru#Marc Márquez toga tiddy#thank u again!!#again just bc I want to have it findable for myself ->#my fic#princeps vale au

1-2 & 10 for the Princess Diaries fic?
HELLOOOO SO SORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG TO ANSWER also thank you!!
Start to finish, how long did it take to plan and write? Did you take breaks during the process?
this is my favorite story about writing a fic. ALRIGHT so on january 2nd, 2021, i made this post about my idea for a princess diaries au. i started writing the next day (january 3), and finished five days later (january 8). that fic happened in a week. from idea to finish, it was seven days. i went shopping with my brother one day and took a nice break from it, but uh. no other breaks. i want whatever high i was on that week to come BACK TO ME.
2. How did you come up with the idea?
honestly, i don't remember. i don't THINK i was watching the movie, but i very well could have been. i know that my inspiration for making it prince alex was because i didn't feel like the movie did a good job of capturing mia's anxiety well, so that was a goal of mine!!
10. How did you approach writing the fic? (e.g. wrote it start to finish in order, started with the ending, starting with the twist)
i wrote this fic extremely out of order with no plan. like, to the point where i'm genuinely surprised that it created a coherent fic in the end. i had a vague idea in my mind of what i wanted to happen, and somehow... it worked? looking back, i really wish i had sat down to actually plot, because i feel like i could have done SO MUCH MORE with that story, but i also don't regret it, yk?? is it my favorite fic i've written?? no. but it does mean a lot to me and i do love it and hold it close to my heart.

🌵 ⇢ share the link to a playlist you love
oo, this is difficult! while i do seek out playlists to find new songs i don't actually. listen to a lot of playlists? even mine i only have one that gets put on shuffle / listened to as a playlist! otherwise it's just to make finding songs easier xD
i do like those compilation videos, though, and this is one of my favorites <3
🌻 ⇢ tag someone you appreciate but don’t talk to on a regular basis
ohh i could tag so many people here lol xD i am. bad at talking to people. trying to be better! but still bad at it <3
so! you @thesandsofelsweyr <3 & @bi-bats <333 @monkeymindscream even though our fandoms have diverged~ @cheetahleopard! <3 um. i will leave some in case i get this question again! but <33 i appreciate all of you very much!
📚 ⇢ what’s the last thing you wrote down in your notes app?
oh!! i love that you asked me this <3 bc i pulled p much everything shareable from my most recent note (a fic planning note), but!! the note before that is one i made bc of your blog xD specifically i was going through your masterlist and i saw that you had linked some smut headcanon lists so i've been having fun going through those, just for my own private enjoyment lol.
anyway! here is one:
Jason LOVES kissing. He loves controlling kisses, and he adores submitting to them. He likes being kissed everywhere, from head to toe. And he loves, loves, loves marks—bruises, teeth marks, lipstick prints. You name it. His body is a canvas.

read chap 3-13 of theogeny this morning since i was free until 2pm (wanted to wait until it was complete before starting, and did 1-2 last night since i had some time). very nice story! the tone and style of your writing feels totally professional (and honestly surpasses many published authors i’ve read LOL). however, i was especially blown away by all of the historical details about ancient athens & greece. i’m as close to the opposite of an expert on the time period as possible, thus am not fully convinced this isn’t based on a true story where you got sent back in time, but then chose to come back to the present afterwards. were there any sources you leaned particularly heavily on? even my own experience writing a gen-ed history paper about the original Olympic games during my undergrad felt about as straightforward as navigating a swamp of hopelessly entangled, greek-speaking, arguing jellyfish, what with all the completely speculative secondary sources and glaring holes in the firsthand accounts of the events.
i’ve been away from the depths of the hp fandom scene for a year or two, but my recollection of your blog was that you’re a law student? given that law ≠ classical greek history (as far as i know), i’d say the fact that you specifically researched all of this for the story makes it even more captivating. (although the attention to detail does also align exactly with the depth of case-research i’d assume is possessed by the top-tier, most competent lawyers, though that is purely speculation). but if your real answer is the time travel thing, just blink twice and cite wikipedia or whatever ;)
also, i’m curious how realistic it is for a classics scholar to know enough ancient greek that she can carry even a stilted conversation with native speakers. if so, i find it mind-blowing that such depth of knowledge of a dead language is wrapped up into a subset of a history PhD—makes my own discipline seem like 3rd grade times tables.
LOL thank you so much! this is such a wonderful, detailed review! I can safely say that I have not traveled back to ancient Athens, but if there's any way I can visit for about a day and then return to the modern era please LMK…
so: I tended to use a lot of sources from Google Scholar, JStor, my own university's online library, what have you; there are a few times I went back and read through my old Classical Civilizations lecture notes, but I only ever took an intro class so I wasn't exactly delving into the minutiae. many of the sources are listed in the end notes, but I have an entire bookmarks folder (which I should probably delete) that looks like this lol
of course, I had to suspend my disbelief and expect/hope the reader would suspend their disbelief at the things that I just couldn't really know; but that was my moment for artistic liberty, which I used a lot of let me tell you.
and yes! I'm a second year law student. but I started this story when I was still applying to law schools :") I have worked as an archival and online research assistant/hired researcher/research fellow since I was 19 in my undergrad days, so I've become very familiar with the process of sifting through online archives. I also just really enjoy it! I love learning about areas of history I don't know a lot about, so this was just such a perfect passion project.
so — in terms of speaking Ancient Greek, I think it's absolutely possible that students at the PhD level would be able to communicate, given that many programs have really robust Greek language curricula. however, and this is something I touched on in the early chapters and something I researched to the best of my ability, the way that academic accents from non-Greek native speakers (aka, modern Greek people) sound is very different in pronunciation and would likely sound strange and unnatural to someone in Ancient Greece; such is the nature of language development. so, I think would have been pretty much like any non-fluent language speaker being thrown into an immersive program with no preparation.
I'm not here for any discipline ribbing, though! I'm sure whatever it is you study is just as challenging and engaging as Lily's field :)
