By Jesus’ sacrifice, God reveals and defends His justice in two ways. First, Jesus’ suffering for the sins of His people means that any sins unpunished beforehand are now fully punished in Christ. God leaves no sin unpunished. Mercy and grace do not come at the expense of justice. Second, because the sins of the faithful are fully punished in Jesus, God may justly declare righteous those who have faith in Jesus. That’s what it means to be justified in God’s sight-to be declared righteous by faith in Jesus. The cross, rightly understood, is God’s own answer to any objection that He is unfair to substitute Jesus for the unrighteous.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied // Matthew 5:6
"At the cross, God got justice, and we got righteousness. So now, in the church, we who are righteous ought to be found fighting for justice." (Charlie Dates)
In the biblical imagination, the words "righteousness" and "justice" share a common root. While this should not be shocking to us, it often is, especially for those who think of righteousness merely as some disembodied, inward piety. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of God's throne (Psalm 89:14). In this world, wrongness and injustice abound. In the kingdom of God, all things are set right, Christ's reign expanding until all creation is restored.
The one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness desires what God desires. They desire God himself: "O God, you are my God...my soul thirsts for you" (Psalm 63:1). God is the one who fills the hungry with good things (Luke 1:53) and satisfies the thirsty with living water (John 4:10).
Those who hunger and thirst for justice also desire that God would establish his kingdom here and now, in time and space. New Testament scholar Esau McCaulley says, "Hungering and thirsting for justice is nothing less than the continued longing for God to come and set things right." Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile says, "We preach and we do justice because we wish to be like our Lord and see His righteousness fill the earth." Hungering and thirsting convey something more than mere wish. Rather, it is the material outworking of the inward desire.
The end of the beatitude gives a promise: that they will be satisfied. The question, naturally, is when? When will the oppressed be met with relief, the hungry with food, and the robbed with reparations? For so many, the hope of all things set right feels like cruel dream. But in the kingdom of God, we are not permitted to revel in either cynicism or sentimentality. We know we will be fully satisfied at Christ's bodily return, and yet the kingdom of God also propels us toward justice now. With the deep confidence this assurance brings, we take responsibility to act, realizing that the question of justice's "when" is asked to us.

It is arrogant, rebellious, self-reliant, God-indicting pride to conclude that the church is an optional extra to the Christian life. We need everything God designs for us. Everything. Pastor Dwight McKissic to Beth Moore: "History Will Record That Your Impact Upon Southern Baptists is Equal to or Greater Than Lottie Moon's"
Prominent Southern Baptist pastor Dwight McKissic is joining Thabiti Anyabwile, J. Lee Grady, and a few other male Southern Baptist ministry leaders in publicly standing in solidarity with Beth Moore. The well-known evangelical Bible teacher and founder of women's ministry, Living Proof, set off a firestorm in the conservative Christian community last Thursday when she released "A Letter to My Brothers" via her blog. In her powerful open letter, Moore addressed the pervasive sexist and misogynistic attitudes and actions coming from some male ministerial leaders in conservative Christian circles that she and fellow Christian women have had to endure as they strive to serve God. Moore also used her open letter as an opportunity to issue a prophetic challenge to her Christian "brothers" to cut off this "dangerously malignant root" which leads them to dismiss and disregard women as nothing more than objects to satisfy their desires. Pastor McKissic reached out to Beth Moore via Twitter with the following words of support and encouragement: "Love you Beth Moore. History will record that your impact upon Southern Baptists is equal to or greater than Lottie Moon. You are a gift from God to Southern Baptists for this generation. Your future will be even greater than ur past. Unconditional love & respect from this SBC pas." https://twitter.com/pastordmack/status/994333344761597957 - Seraya Rivera

Prominent Southern Baptist Pastor Thabiti Anyabwile said conservative opposition to the idea of reparations for slavery is of the devil.
In a series of tweets last Friday, Anyabwile, who leads Anacostia River Church in Washington D.C., argued that conservatives who believe the broadly unpopular idea of reparations for slavery and Jim Crow is about blacks who “want to steal whites’ money” appeared more concerned about the idolatry of money instead of righteousness.
“I’m sad for folks who hear the word ‘reparations,’ w/o any specific proposal attached, who start exclaiming, ‘Blacks just want to steal whites’ money!’ It’s a retort that reveals possible idolization of mammon and willful blindness to 250 years of stealing Black ppl themselves,” Anyabwile began.
“And the hypocrisy of some self-professed ‘conservatives’ who argue all day long that a person should be able to control their labor but who do not think any recompense is owed for CENTURIES of stolen labor is mind-blowing. It’s a glaring inconsistency,” he argued.
Democrat presidential candidates, like former HUD Secretary Julian Castro, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, have expressed their support for reparations for slavery. They have yet to offer specific proposals. And, there is a debate among them about whether reparations means direct cash payments or can be broader policy programs, such as financial aid, aimed at reducing the racial wealth gap. Warren has also suggested that native Americans should be included.
Anyabwile continued that Christians who argue that supporting reparations will only further divide the church is simply a continuation of “gospel escapism” that will do nothing for racial reconciliation.
Honestly, I hope he pushes this further. He’s not the only idiot in the SBC and the sooner is dies out, the better.

Thank God It’s Friday
Sharing Free Online Resources and Fun Internet Deep Dives.
While I link to fresh weekly content as part of my Recommended Reading, the weekend is here for us to relax, enjoy some free resources, and do some deep dives into the Internet.
You can find all of my Friday posts with the TGIF tag. I love reading links and your comments, so please keep in touch. Have a great weekend!
CROSS19 Resources
The Cross Conference exists to see our generation live for the most loving cause in the universe: bringing people from every tribe, tongue, and nation into the everlasting joy of knowing and worshiping Jesus. New resources include main session messages from Piper, DeYoung, and Platt. CROSS Book
World missions is the marvelous venture of crossing cultures to rescue unreached peoples from eternal suffering, renovate their broken lives, and see them reflect God’s glory through joy in Christ. Inspired by the inaugural Cross student missions conference, this book includes contributions from John Piper, David Platt, Matt Chandler, Thabiti Anyabwile, Kevin DeYoung, D.A. Carson, and more.
Inside The Office
We just finished watching the very last episode of The Office this week. I immediately jumped on to YouTube for more, and found this interview of the cast and creative team behind The Office gathering at the Goldenson Theater in Hollywood for a discussion panel presented by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. And if that is still not enough, you can watch a video essay on The Day The Office Died. Mary Poppins Returns - Making The Impossible
There is a tweet that shows how they filmed Mary Poppins sliding into the bathtub. I checked YouTube for more and found this 30-minute documentary on the making of the film.

The Whole of His Language
The Whole of His Language
It was still the early days of what came to be known as the New Calvinism or the Reformed Resurgence. The Together for the Gospel Conference had been formed in 2006 and now, in 2008, was gathering for the second time. The four founders were joined again by guests John Piper, John MacArthur, and R.C. Sproul (and, for the first time, Thabiti Anyabwile). R.C. Sproul led the conference’s fifth…
