2018 Drabble Challenge

Day 358 Bonus - Christmas

Christmas - time for giving, receiving and spending time with friends.

And Kuroko had a lot of friends. Again, they all decided to meet and spend some time together. But this time, out side, at a festival for the holiday. Everyone was dressed properly, the puppies calmly walking next to their humans so as not to get lost in the crowd. Only Aomine seemed a bit weird as he brought a basketball along with himself. Like always.

The friends went along the stands, being swept by the mass of people. Sometimes they would stop for food, other times to play a game.

"We should get together like that more often!" Kise proposed excitedly.

"We're in different schools with different schedules. It's kinda impossible." Aomine grumbled, spinning the ball on his finger.

"Dai-chan, will you stop playing with the ball?" Momoi pouted.

"And what, play along with you?" He asked, smirking. The girl rolled her eyes and hit him on the head.

"Behave." Midorima said. "Don't create a scene."

"Like this?" Kise asked, laughing as he jumped on Midorima's back. The boy just sighed.

"Yes Midorima, as a Christmas present, I want you two give me a piggy back ride everywhere." Takao also jumped on him. "I can't be the only one to drive you everywhere."

"I don't want to walk alongside such little kids as you." Kuroko deadpanned and Momoi was immediately running towards him, linking their arms.

"Let's go somewhere, just the two of us." She said cheerfully.

"Oi, don't steal her all to yourself, Kuroko!" Aomine yelled. The whole group of humans had suddenly gotten quite wild and noisy.

And their puppies weren't about to tolerate such behavior.

"Want to go somewhere else?" Yoshi asked the group.

"To the big shining tree!" Choco barked excitedly, jumping up and down. The others agreed and so six puppies weaved into the big sea of humans, turning their backs to their own humans.

But two humans saw them and decided to follow them.

"Where do you think they are going?" Riko asked, a bit shy since she wasn't that close to Murasakibara and suddenly the atmosphere was weird. To her at least. The boy, too focused on his food, didn't seem to notice.

"The Christmas tree. Choco really liked it when we passed it." He said nonchalantly. And the pups really walked in that direction.

Once there, as if they were little kids, they ran towards it, easily walking between people's legs and getting right under it. Murasakibara and Riko couldn't follow them though so they stayed behind, hoping the puppies wouldn't get lost.

"Don't worry." Murasakibara said. "If I yell 'chocolate chips' he will jump and bark unless I yell 'eaten'. It's our code when we need to find each other."

"Clever." Riko admitted.

"Hey, where is Riko?" Kagami suddenly asked.

"Murasakibara is gone too..." Tatsuya said.

"They went somewhere with the puppies." Akashi said calmly, eating a tangerine. Deciding that no one would get lost, the group decided to continue on with their walk. Momoi sent a message to Riko, just to be sure.

Fifteen minutes later the two groups were still separated. But there was a big change. Suddenly, something white began falling from the sky.

"Guys, snow!" Kise yelled excitedly.

"Snow! The white floating stuff." Choco barked.

Everyone looked to the sky, humans and puppies alike. There really were small floating things, cold and falling the the ground.

"Let's go have a snow fight!" Aomine proposed.

"You need more slow than this for that." Midorima rolled his eyes.

"There will be enough eventually. We can play basketball till then."

Riko got a message from Momoi, reading it and learning their plan.

"They are going to play basketball until there's enough snow to play with."

"Oh, good idea." Murasakibara said. Before he could yell for Choco, the pup himself let the puppies to them. And so they also went to where they friends were going.

By the time they got there, the snowing had gotten a lot stronger. It wasn't melting so the group of friends could actually make a few snow balls and fight with them. When Riko, Midorima and the puppies arrived, Aomine and Kise were actually making a small snowman. Yoshi jumped right at him and made it fall.

"It's time then." Aomine said.

"To battle!" Kise yelled as he made a ball and threw it as Midorima.

"Oi! Behave yourself." The boy shrieked from the cold.

"Your puppy ruined our snowman." Kise defended himself.

"It wasn't much of a snowman anyway." Murasakibara said. Which, of course, moved the attack to him.

There rarely was a white Christmas in Japan. But this group of friends made the most of it, enjoying every snowflake that fell to the ground. Or even if it didn't reach the ground. The puppies jumped at every small pile of snow, making themselves white with snow. Which then ended up on the humans anyway.

And through all of this, Chi preferred to hide in Midorima's (and on some instants, Akashi's and Kuroko's) collars. Snow wasn't really her thing, she liked the warm much better. And the puppies, for her liking.

Once the fireworks began, Midorima had to endure the pain of the kitten's claws, too. As if the children he was surrounded with weren't enough...

Day 336 - Challenges

The show was over. For today at least. Tomorrow was the first match. 

The boys were cleaning up after the opening ceremony. They still couldn't take a break even if the event was over. Besides, there was not going to be a break for a while, the matches had to begin.

The pups at least were having a break, napping under one of the benches around the court. They were tired from the playing and running around, from all the attention and people. So their humans let them be. For now. Tomorrow there was going to be no break.

Only Toshiaki and Choco weren't sleeping, one was nomming on some food, the other actually helping with the cleaning. 

"Shouldn't you tell him to rest? You have a match tomorrow after all." Kise asked. 

"No, he is fine." Akashi said calmly.  

"Kuroko should be more worried." Murasakibara said. The others looked at the tall boy. 

"Nigou and I trained a lot. Akashi won't win this easily." The blue-haired boy said quietly, his eyes glaring, that light in them ignited. 

"I wouldn't want an easy match, Tetsuya." Akashi smiled. "But unfortunately Toshiaki has a reputation to uphold, he won't be losing and neither would I." 

This was an obvious challenge, all the boys saw it. Kuroko stared at Akashi who petted Toshiaki. The pup looked up at Kuroko at that moment, as if he himself was challenging him.

Day 331 - Not fun

Three days later Kise and Aomine still didn't talk to each other. No one expected this or that it would continue for this long. And the puppies suffered the most, everyone know Hissori and Senshi were best of friends, just like their humans.

"We should do something This can't go on, especially if the Puppy Tournament begins soon." Midorima reasoned one day. 

"What can we do though? It's their thing to figure out." Murasakibara said while crouched down, giving snacks to the puppies.

"Maybe it was just nerves. Or overworking, too much training." Kuroko wondered.

"If they haven't resolved it in three days, I say we forbid them from participating in the tournament." Akashi proposed calmly, sipping his tea.

"What? You can't, that's not very fair now." Midorima raised his voice.

"Besides, Kise did so much for the tournament this time around. He really wants to play." Kuroko too defended the boy.

"Neither of them is helping the tournament much now though. More like creating problems."

"Aka-chin is right." Everybody looked in surprise at Murasakibara. Usually he didn't say much if anything in these type of conversations but he actually decided to chip in now. "They're not making it fun anymore. It looks like a proper tournament with fights and audience. Reminds me of our tournaments. Not fun."

After that remark the boys left the topic, hoping Kise and Aomine could figure it out on their own without making the other boys fight, too. The atmosphere was suddenly too somber.

2018 Drabble Challenge

Day 352 - Tomorrow

By the end of the first half of the match, everyone was dripping with sweat, panting for air. The boys' fighting spirit and want to win had gotten the better of them. Their pup could barely keep up. Even Momoi and Riko could barely follow the game, even if they knew the boys wouldn't commit any fouls. Willingly, at least.

So the second half was more focused on the pups since they had more energy in them. Every pup did its specialty, the ball flew and jumped. Toshiaki tried too, he didn't want to hinder his team. 

Thanks to him and the opposite team not expecting him to play that much, his team won. Little Tetsuya, Toshiaki and Yoshi won.

It was time for a little party before the serious matches tomorrow. The pups decided to rest for once, acting more responsible than their own humans. Only Akashi stayed behind to check on how Toshiaki was.

"Will he be able to play tomorrow?" Ask Murasakibara.

"He will. He is strong." Akashi said, petting his pup. "Why didn't you and Choco win?"

"I don't know. It wasn't our day. You know how we play." The taller boy shrugged.

"Yeah, I know. But Midorima and Yoshi have been playing for longer, they will give a good fight tomorrow." Murasakibara only shrugged.

Akashi didn't really care for the win. But Kuroko, Aomine and Kise obviously did. Their match was going to be interesting. And truth be told, Akashi had the feeling no one really knew how this new system of theirs would work out.

Tomorrow, they would all see.

2018 Drabble Challenge

Day 279 - Serious training?

Everyone who had played against him, knew that Murasakibara was really serious when he tied his hair. Then he really could create troubles for even Aomine and Akashi. But no one had seen him tie his hair when playing against the puppies.

One day though, when Aomine and Kagami had decided to have an impromptu training at Yosen (they were good at attacking but defending was needed too), they say Murasakibara running around with a basketball. And with his hair tied. That hardly ever happened, especially during practice. S of course, the two boys wanted to see who he was playing against.

It turned out that the tall boy had a very small opponent. His own puppy Choco.

Now even Senshi who had come with Aomine was curious. Was his friend that good to make the Tree struggle? Soon enough the strange match had two humans and a puppy for audience.

After a few minutes of watching, the match seemed more like a training for the pup to take the ball as it always returned it back to his human. So this wasn't a match at all. Making it even more interesting why Murasakibara had his hair tied.

Maybe he was just that serious to training his pup. Or maybe... Choco had some secret weapon.

2018 Drabble Challenge

Day 358 - This Tournament

It was time for the final match of this tournament. It seemed like the whole event had passed in a blur and yet that the matches had been hours long. Kise was proud of the work he had done for this tournament but now he had to do one final thing for it. Play in the final match.

Aomine had been reluctant about the size of the tournament. And truth be told, about these new matches and rules. But in the end it had turned out to be fun. So why not finish the last match with a bang. The boy was getting both himself and his puppy for the last match. And it would be even better if they won, too.

Kuroko was happy he was in the final match now. They had done better than in the previous tournament, little Tetsuya and him. But, like Akashi, he wasn't really playing for the win. He liked the fun that this tournament brought. Both for the participants and the audience. Kise had outdone himself, really.

"One last match to ref, huh?" Momoi asked.

"No, I'm sure they will repeat this. The puppies love it, too." Riko said.

"Mainly because of all the attention they get." Momoi joked and both girls laughed.

Riko grabbed the ball and everyone got on the court for the start of the last match for this Tournament.

Day 275 - Trying out football

It was time for the pups to learn a new sport. Only because their humans wanted something for a change. They were going back to basketball tomorrow. 

Now though, it was time for football. 

The whole gang, humans and puppies alike, were on a football pitch. A white ball was flying around, Kise and Aomine kicking it while a few of the pups chased it. 

Finally Murasakibara and Kagami were persuaded (forced) to join the match too so it could be two versus two. Aomine and Murasakibara against Kise and Kuroko. Again, Kise and Aomine played the most. Kuroko just walked around while Murasakibara yawned in front of one of the goal posts. 

Soon enough all the pups were made to play too. Their cause wasn't so good though. They were supposed to distract the other team. So it was Hissori, Tetsuya and Yoshi against Senshi, Choco and an unapproving Toshiaki. 

The pups' mission was to walk in the humans' legs and prevent them from playing. Choco, Hissori and Senshi actually seemed to have fun while Toshiaki lied down next to Murasakibara who had completely given up and sat on the ground. Tetsuya and Yoshi were playing at the other goal post, a football game of their own. Kuroko preferred to play with them. 

Obviously, football wasn't their sport. Soon enough they had switched back to basketball. And everyone was playing.

Day 354 - This ball

Not wanting the win for once didn't mean Akashi wasn't going to play for the show and for the audience. Midorima noticed it too late. How Toshiaki looked away and closed his eyes. He didn't want to see what his human was going to do next.

The Ankle Breaker. Immediately everyone on the court was literally on the court, down on their knees or butts, giving Akashi enough time to run closer to one of the baskets and shoot with no problem, scoring.

"Your ball, Shintaro." He said, walking back to his own basket to defend. He had scored in Midorima's basket so the ball was his, yes, those were the rules. The green-haired boy had the feeling Akashi had noticed him noticing where this play was going.

It was over now though. Midorima had to get some points, too. He walked forward, towards Akashi, when out of nowhere Murasakibara appeared in front of him.

"This is not your basket to defend." The boy scoffed.

"But I want this ball." Murasakibara growled. One of his hands shot forward but Midorima managed to move the ball to his other hand. Or so he thought. A purplish shadow flew past his left side and the ball was there no longer. Choco had taken it.

Yoshi was right there though, running after him. He hit the ball with his paw, making it fly away from Choco. And away from himself. And right into Toshiaki.

Day 353 - A three way match

The audience was divided in three, all parts of it moved to different places of the court. The change was needed as the court was a bit modified, too. Kise had helped Momoi and Riko to change up the pattern on the ground a bit and moved another basket on the new court. So now it was modified to have a three way match.

Everything was ready, both Momoi and Riko were ready to be referees. Then, Akashi, Midorima and Murasakibara stepped on the court, too, their puppies following them. Toshiaki looked all better now, seemingly ready for this battle, Yoshi was serious, knowing this was a serious match for him, he had to beat the newbies, Choco was just his usual happy, jumping self.

It was decided the puppies would jump for the ball, considering the hits there wouldn't be as bad as if three humans jumped together. At least they shouldn't be. Surprisingly, Toshiaki jumped higher than anyone, taking the ball. He quickly passed it back to his human before the other two pups could take the ball.

Now, how did the points work? Easy, just score a basket that's not in your own hoop, and you get the points. Meaning the players had two baskets to decide from. You could use a player's weakness or lead the other teams away from one of the hoops. Those were the basic tactics at least.

What were these guys' tactics though?

Day 346 - No need

Turns out Hissori wasn't exceptional only at passing. He was very good at stealing the ball too, his skill enhanced by the fact that he was always so quiet. Again, only Kise was on the attack. 

The third and last part of the match had begun and Midorima and Yoshi still couldn't make the difference in points disappear completely. Even the pup was getting aggravated now. But now matter how much those two attacked, Kise and Hissori always seemed to be there to defend or steal. 

And yet Kise's tactic was simple, Midorima could see it. The boy was preserving his stamina now, probably to use it in the last minutes for his Perfect Copy. Simple but working. And annoying. 

Kise's cocky smile was always there. He knew the win was his and Hissori's, even if Midorima and Yoshi were trying and sometimes scoring their shots. But something was off. Even if Kise wasn't moving that much in order to preserve his energy, his pup was always there, like a shadow, preventing his opponents from shooting. 

It was quite astounding though, how the pup managed this. Midorima had to admit he was impressed. Kise had trained him well. 

The match finished with no more needs for Perfect Copy. Kise and Hissori won but neither Midorima, nor Yoshi were really sad about it. It was a good match in the end.

Day 341 - A bit under the weather

"How is he?" 

"What are you going to do now?" 

"I'm really sorry, Akashi-kun..." 

The boy turned to Kuroko, no malice in his eyes, no scowl on his face. 

"Don't worry, Kuroko, it's not your fault. Toshiaki overdid it, he knows it. He was just doing his best." Akashi sighed. "But he is fine now, the vet made sure of it." 

Everyone around gave a sigh of relief. But one question remained unanswered. 

"So... What about the tournament?" Aomine asked. 

"I'm going to play. Alone. I'm not letting Toshiaki play anymore. I'm probably going to lose but at least I won't go down without a fight." Akashi smiled. "Toshiaki is going to be there but please don't let him come on the court." The boy looked to Momoi and Midorima as he said the last part. He trusted them the most to keep his puppy safe for now. So they both nodded. 

"I'll play without Nigou too then." Kuroko said. 

"No, you won't. This is the Puppy Tournament. With puppies. Mine is just... A bit under the weather." 

No one could protest. The match was going to be resumed this afternoon. They were a bit after schedule but they could manage it. The most important thing was that Toshiaki was fine. 

I’m doing fillers left, right and center when I have less than a month to wrap this up, huh... guess what is going to happen, as always I’m gonna go over my own set limits xD

Day 278 - Little puppies

When Kuroko, Kise, Midorima, Aomine and Murasakibara arrived, Akashi was sitting in a cafe, eating a cake while the puppies were running around, Toshiaki training them in his own way.

"You could've told us they were here. With your pup." Aomine growled.

"I didn't know this myself until half an hour ago. When I told you guys, too." Akashi said calmly, taking another bite of his cake.

"I knew. When Choco disappears, he is always here." Murasakiabara shrugged, taking a menu from a nearby table and flipping through it, both Momoi and Riko quickly joining him.

The other guys just stared at the tall boy, eventually rolling their eyes or sighing.

"What are they doing anyway?" Midorima asked, sitting at Akashi's table and fixing his glasses while also watching the pups.

"Ask Toshiaki, he knows best." Akashi shrugged this time. The green-haired boy wasn't satisfied with this answer though.

Meanwhile, the puppies in question were running up and down the street, training some intense exercises. Even their humans didn't do this to them. But Toshiaki was different. And his gang didn't complain at all, they all did everything as they were told to. Tetsuya and his gang were old enough for all these exercises and running, they should be able to do them all. And they will.

A few minutes later all the puppies from the gang had gone to their humans, tired. Only Toshiaki and Choco and their old friends continued their regimen. This was insane, now Tetsuya and his gang preferred to stay little puppies so they wouldn't have to train this much ever again.

Day 340 - Fight or give up

"Toshiaki!" Akashi ran forward to the fallen puppy, afraid to touch it but still petting it lightly on the head. "Are you alright? Does it hurt?" 

All the boys from Teiko gathered around, the audience got quiet, Momoi and Riko ran closer, too. 

The pup was alive, of course. A hit with a ball wouldn't kill it. But it was whimpering, it was in pain. Akashi immediately got his phone from his bag, calling the vet he usually went to with Toshiaki. They said they'll be there as soon as possible. 

After a quick talk with the other boys, Kise went to speak to the audience. 

"Guys sorry for this but we have to end today here. We didn't expect any serious injuries like that. So please, we should be back here tomorrow but for today the show is over." 

The crowd slowly dissipated with quiet whispers and murmurs. Meanwhile, the other boys moved away from Toshiaki, the pup needed space to breath easier and feel calmer. Akashi though stayed right next to him, never leaving until the vet came. 

" What now? Does Kuroko win?" Kagami had stayed behind, too, not wanting to leave his friend alone. Kuroko was actually feeling guilty having apologised profusely both to Toshiaki and his human. 

"No, it can't end like this." The blue-haired boy mumbled. "Akashi will fight." 

The group looked to Akashi who was following the vet into his car, Toshiaki in his hands. No, Akashi wasn't one to give up.

Day 339 - Mirage hit

The second part began. Kuroko and his puppy had the ball. The boy let out a breath. 

He had a new tactic. Both him and his puppy were going to disappear.

He gave the command and little Tetsuya began flying forward, right towards Toshiaki and Akashi. The pink-haired boy actually looked surprised but still moved forward according to their tactic. But Toshiaki moved forward, too. 

Then, Kuroko threw the ball in the air. Akashi and Toshiaki looked at it, both surprised now. It was just for a second. But this second was more than enough. Once they looked back down, there was no one in front of them. No puppy, no human. 

"What..." Akashi barely mumbled, turning around and seeing both Kuroko and his puppy near his basket. Toshiaki too was surprised but quickly got ahold of himself, running after them. 

Kuroko heard the older puppy coming from behind though and made his own pass him the ball back. He was taller, the chance of a puppy stopping him was less. 

Until he actually saw a puppy flying towards him. A reddish pup. Akashi's pup. 

But it was too late, Kuroko had shot his Mirage Shot. It was over. 

Toshiaki had jumped far too high. This jump wasn't his best. It was a secret weapon of his, jumping towards the basket post and then jumping off of it in the opposite direction. It was a way to stop shots. But now he was flying too high, too forward. 

He blocked the shot alright. It hit him in the stomach.

Day 297 Bonus - A day for a break

"He is serious about this then." Akashi said thoughtfully. 

"Seems so. I managed to escape but doubt Aomine will manage it. And then there's you, too. I warned you but you would've realised it anyway." Midorima shrugged. 

"Still, thank you, Shintarou." The shorter boy nodded with a small smile. 

Midorima knew Akashi was clever enough and knew Kuroko well enough to be wary of such tactics. The blue-haired boy wasn't doing this because he wanted some bonus advantage, it was just his way of dealing with opponent's. Even if it was a Puppy Tournament. 

"What will you do?" Midorima asked. 

"Will decide when Kuroko makes the first move. No need to hurry, he too knows I'll be tougher than the other guys." Akashi smirked. "Besides, Toshiaki knows not to share plays and moves, just like on the street. You don't give away your strongest weapon." 

Midorima was amazed yet again at how much the other boy believed in his puppy. He had seen that there was a reason for it but what if Akashi went overboard and the pup didn't manage to meet his expectations? 

Then again, this was Akashi. He knew when he went overboard. Right? 

After that the two boys continued their conversation as they normally would. Tactics weren't discussed anymore though, it was a day for a break after all.

Day 293 - Home sooner

The older dog made all the ruckus, Tetsuya knew that. But how could he explained it to the humans... 

The other animal had gone berserk, howling and barking, jumping in his box. In between those sounds he explained to Tetsuya that this plan was sure to get them out and back on the street again. The small pup tried to explain that he didn't live on the street, he had a human. He was going home soon. 

The older animal didn't believe it, finally managing to break the door of his box and running out of it. Then, he attacked Tetsuya's box, baring his fangs and biting the lock. Soon enough, he broke it but at the same time, a human entered the room. 

"Hey! What..." But the older dog ran between his legs, barking for the younger pup to follow him. Tetsuya only moved his head to the side, watching up at the human. He didn't run, didn't move. He didn't want to, what was the point. 

The other animal ran away, Tetsuya didn't understand anything about him. How he got here or why he ran away. But soon enough the human in the room called his human and little Tetsuya knew he was going home sooner than planned.
