The Hunt for Red October (1990): Adaptation of Tom Clancy's book of the same name. Stars Sean Connery (Marko Ramias), Alec Baldwin (Jack Ryan), Scott Glenn (Bart Mancuso), James Earl Jones (James Greer), Sam Neill (Vasili Borodin), and also has several other actors I like. Since this is a Marvel blog, I will add that Stellan Skarsgard, the actor for Erik Selvig, is Tupolev. During the late Cold War, the Soviet Union built the Red October, a massive submarine built with new technology so that SONAR could not detect it. Ramias, captain of the Red October means to defect to the United States. Ryan, a CIA analyst, deduces this and has to prove his theory to the US Navy before it's too late.

Ocean's Eleven (2001): Remake of a 1960 film, Ocean's 11. Stars George Clooney (Danny Ocean), Brad Pitt (Rusty Ryan), Matt Damon (Linus Caldwell), Julia Roberts (Tess Ocean), and Andy Garcia (Terry Benedict). Again, Marvel blog, I'll let y'all know Don Cheadle is in it as Basher Tarr. Danny and Rusty plan a $160 million heist of a Vegas casino owned by Benedict, the lover of Danny's ex-wife Tess. They assemble a team to steal the casino's money

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016): Adaptation of the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump. Stars Sam Neill (Hector or Hec), Julian Dennison (Ricky Baker), Rima Te Wiata (Bella), and Rachel House (Paula). Again, Marvel blog, so I'll tell you it's directed by Taika Waititi. So he has a cameo in it that is hilarious. Hec and his foster son, Ricky, don't get along all that well. After a crazy turn of events leaving Ricky and Hec stranded in the New Zealand bush for a couple weeks before social services were supposed to pick up Ricky, the authorities assume Hec kidnapped Ricky. The two live on the run in the bush and grow close. It's a Waititi movie, meaning that it is a comedy used to discuss a more serious topic, in this case chosen families. It is hilarious and had me laughing so much when I watched it.

Invictus (2009): Based on John Carlin's book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and The Game That Made a Nation, which is in turn based on real life events in South Africa. Stars Morgan Freeman (Nelson Mandela) and Matt Damon (Francois Pienaar). It is shortly after apartheid and Mandela's election as president. There are lots of racial tensions in South Africa and Mandela wants to find a way to unite the country. Mandela decides to help the national rugby team win the 1995 Rugby World Cup in order to create something both whites and blacks can agree on and hope for together.

The Sixth Sense (1999): Stars Bruce Willis (Malcom Crowe) and Haley Joe Osment (Cole Sear). Malcom Crowe is a child psychologist trying to help Cole. Malcom eventually learns something supernatural is happening. Can't say too much, I don't want to spoil it since it blew me away.

Hatari! (1962): Swahili for "danger." Stars John Wayne (Sean Mercer) and Elsa Martinelli (Dallas). Sean and several others are professional game catchers in Africa. Dallas, a photographer, shows up unannounced. A series of funny events happens afterwards.

Swiss Family Robinson (1960): Based on Johann David Wyss's book The Swiss Family Robinson. Starring Johann Mills (Father Robinson), Dorothy McGuire (Mother Robinson), James MacArthur (Fritz Robinson), Tommy Kirk (Ernst Robinson), Kevin Corcoran (Francis Robinson), and Janet Munro (Roberta). A Swiss family is on a boat to New Guinea when pirates attack and the ship flees into a storm. They shipwreck not far off from an island. They have to build a life for themselves on the island and learn to love the island. But they have to be careful - the pirates are still out there.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959): Based on Herminie Templeton Kavanagh's Darby O'Gill stories. Stars Albert Sharpe (Darby O'Gill), Janet Munro (Katie O'Gill), Sean Connery (Michal McBride), and Jimmy O'Dea (King Brian). Darby captures King Brian, king of the Little People, who grants Darby three wishes. At the same time, Darby's landlord sent Michael to live in the townhouse and expected Darby to move elsewhere that required less maintenance now that Darby is old. STUDIO CITY, CA – January 4, 2021 – Lacey Chabert (“Time for Us to Come Home for Christmas,” Mean Girls) and Brennan Elliott (“All of My Heart,” “Cedar Cove”) star in “Crossword Mysteries: Terminal Descent,” a new original movie premiering Sunday, February 14 (8:00 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. Barbara Niven (“Chesapeake Shores”) and John Kapelos (“The Umbrella Academy”) also return for more mystery in this latest installment.

Have a cracktastic birthday, Ororo!

After a certain age, birthdays stopped mattering so much to the person turning a year older. Tess McKay was no exception, and she doubted Ororo was much different. However, Tess McKay was also not a shitty gift-giver. Unless she wanted to be. Or there was a mutually agreed upon “hey, let’s just figuratively throw a bunch of gift cards at the wall and you can keep whichever sticks”. Or–well, that was beside the point. The point was that at some point amidst the chaos of their lives, she had to figure out what she was supposed to do for the woman’s birthday.

 Donation to Ororo’s favorite charity followed by a middle finger in the direction of Feed the Children headquarters? Done. The obligatory ‘happy b-day ro!’ text message? Check. Basbousa?

 Every single Middle Eastern bakery in the greater New York area was sold out.

 Hours later, Tess sat, dumbfounded, before her laptop, her sleep-deprived mind struggling to process the fact that she had no possible way of providing one of her closest friends with her favorite dessert for her birthday because… everyone else had beaten her to the punch,  some of them weeks in advance.  “What–” she asked the otherwise empty living room of her Pelham Parkway apartment–”the fuck.”

 Damned beloved storm queens. How many were purchased by Doctor Doom alone? 

 In the end, cursing under her breath at all the lovely handmade (and regionally specific) jewelry from Kenya that wouldn’t arrive until January, she slapped some flour, water, and milk onto the griddle. ‘Bannock,’ Tess decided, her lips parted in a fierce snarl of utter determination. (ETA? Six hours until the end of Ororo’s birthday. Eight hours until the start of Tess’ next work shift.) ‘Grease bread. Yield: approximately ten servings. Serve with sugar or chokecherry jam. 

 Five hours later, most of that spent on the train from NYC to Westchester County, Tess was skidding through the grounds, a hastily wrapped package tucked under one arm like a football. “Look out, Drake!” she bellowed, stiff-arming Bobby to one side and sending him flailing into a nearby bush.

(ETA? Fifty-six minutes until the end of Ororo Munroe’s birthday. Why were so many people out of bed this time of night?) 

Inside. Upstairs. Down the hall. 

“I have a present here that needs to be heated up! G-d help any of you in my path right n–”

Her shoes practically smoked as she backtracked just long enough to twine a loose curl around her finger and exclaiming, “Oh, hi, Kurt,” to the nearby teleporter before she was charging down the hallway all over again. 

Thirty seconds later, she realized she could have utilized Nightcrawler for her own birthday-related purposes. Well. Hindsight when it came to BAMFing was twenty-twenty, wasn’t it? By then, she was literally plowing through Ororo’s bedroom door, sending wood splintering. Tess, it was worth noting, had no history of superhuman strength in this particular body. No one got in the way of a McKay woman when something important was in need of doing. Everyone knew.

Everyone.

(“I’m kinda worried about Kurt,” Iceman muttered as an aside, still nursing his ‘wounds’. “Shhh! You let them figure that out for themselves.”) “HappybirthdayI’msorryI’mlateIthinkthebreadiscoldIloveyou!” Tess panted, shoving the box of old bannock and strawberry preserves into Ororo’s hands.
