Are the Justices’ Opinions Emotionally Charged and Does it Matter?
A Sunday morning article in the New York Times begins, “Last February, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. sent his eight Supreme Court colleagues a confidential memo that radiated frustration and certainty [referring to the D.C. Circuit’s decision in the Donald Trump immunity case].” The article continues describing Roberts’ Feb. 22nd memo to the justices, “He wrote not only that the Supreme…

MUSIC
fave genre? Punk. Or anything of that sort
fave artist? Green Day. Always has been, always will be
fave song? Depends on the artist, I don’t have a singular favorite song of all time. Considering I listed Green Day as my favorite artist it seems only appropriate to pick Basket Case for this question
most listened song recently? Looks like that would be Small Talk - Briston Maroney or at least that’s what Spotify says
song currently stuck in your head? None at the moment which is surprising. Last few days though it’s been songs from Bo Burnham’s Inside
5 fave lyrics? Now this is completely random and based on me picking random songs but:
1. “Waking up this time to smash the silence with the brick of self control“ - She - Green Day
2. “Someone who'll help me see things / In a different light / All the things I detest / I will almost like” - Somebody - Depeche Mode
3. “It's not a miracle we needed, and no I wouldn't let you think so“ - 1901 - Phoenix
4. “The passion that makes me feel alive again / It's gonna be the death, the death of us” - AWOL - Every Time I Die
5. “If dreams came true i might have been a better man. / If dreams came true you might have set me free. / But god is kind, for you he had a better plan / And saved you from the pain of loving me.” - A Tale of Two Cities Musical Cast
radio or your own playlist | solo artists or bands | pop or indie | louder or silent volume I slow or fast songs | music video or lyrics video | speakers or headset | riding a bus in silence or while listening to music | driving in silence or with radio on
BOOKS
fave book genre? Fantasy or Science Fiction
fave writer? I have no idea. I love a lot of writers but I don’t think there’s a singular writer I would call my all time favorite
fave book? Venomous - Christopher Krovatin
fave book series? The entirety of The Shannara Chronicles (like every book and individual series combined)
comfort book? Venomous isn’t just my favorite book. But also if I had to provide something else maybe The Child Thief - Brom
perfect book to read on a rainy day? It would have to be something that could stand alone and not be a series so maybe The House of Tomorrow - Peter Bognanni
fave characters? So many. 5 choices are: Peter Pan (The Child Thief), Ender Wiggen (Ender’s Game), Walker Boh (The Shannara Chronicles), Katsa (Graceling), and Cadel Piggot (Evil Genius)
5 quotes from your fave book you know by heart? - I have a notebook filled with favorite quotes from books I’ve read. Here’s a few
1. “The only stupid man is the one who doesn’t know he’s ignorant” - Pathfinder - Orson Scott Card
2. “It was written I should be loyal to the nightmares of my choice” - Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
3. “There is more to family then shared blood. There is trust and friendship and committment” - The Gypsy Morph - Terry Brooks
4. “She was trying to construct a life that made sense from things found in gift shops” - Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
5. “The truth will set you free, but not until it is done with you” - Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace
hardcover or paperback | buy or rent | standalone novels or book series | ebook or physical copy | reading at night or during the day | reading at home or in nature | listening to music while reading or reading in silence | reading in order or reading the ending first | reliable or unreliable narrator | realism or fantasy | one or multiple POVS | judging by the covers or by the summary | rereading or reading just once
TV AND MOVIES
fave tv/movie genre? Anything if I’m being honest. It just has to interest me plot-wise
fave movie? Tie between Spring Forward and Velvet Goldmine
comfort movie? At the moment I’d have to say The Sword in the Stone
movie you watch every year? The only ones are holiday movies so Jack Frost (1979)
fave tv show? I don’t have one, at least not one I’d watch all the time over and over again. I suppose I could say something like New Girl mainly because I’ve not tired of that yet
comfort tv show? Again I don’t think I have one although if I had to choose I would most likely say something like Halt & Catch Fire
most rewatched tv show? I don’t rewatch shows a lot only because there’s so much tv to catch up on that it’s hard to find time for something new and a rewatch. Truthfully though it’s probably an old cartoon or something like Looney Tunes, Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, etc.
5 fave characters? Nick Miller (New Girl), Frederick Chilton (NBC Hannibal), Eames (Inception), Randal Graves (Clerks), Shawn Hunter (Boy Meets World)
tv shows or movie | short seasons (8-13 episodes) or full seasons (22 episodes or more) | one episode a week or binging | one season or multiple seasons | one part or saga | half hour or one hour long episodes | subtitles on or off | rewatching or watching just once | downloads or watches online

Blackpool have made an enquiry to Newcastle United over the availability of young striker Elias Sorensen. Terry McPhillips' side currently sit in 11th place in League One, ten points shy of the play-off places, and an injection of firepower in the final third could be the boost their promotion push needs. Elias Sorensen has been at NUFC for less than 2 years and already has a full-on Geordie accent. This is incredible. Rooting for this young man! pic.twitter.com/AKAUu4FlRI — Oliver Maroney... #MeToo Works Final Post
The #MeToo movement is perhaps the most recognizable online movement next to #BlackLivesMatter. The recognition that this movement created has caused a significant culture shift that has successfully combatted the well-established patriarchal society. There are many examples in Hollywood, news, politics, and sports that support the fact that the #MeToo movement has been working in increasing the attention to sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape culture.
Tarana Burke is the individual that coined the term back in 1996 when she was a youth camp director (CNN). A one on one session with one of the girls explaining what was happening to her was enough emotionally pulling and Tarana could not pull herself to say “Me too” in response. This event is the point in which the culture would never be the same again.
It is not until last year where the #MeToo movement gained some traction and awareness. It was on October 15. 2017 that Alyssa Milano famously tweeted out an idea from a friend to bring “Me Too” to Twitter and called out all to those who have been sexually harassed or sexually assaulted to come together and quantify the magnitude of these issues. Shockingly, 200,000 #metoo tweets were put out by the next day and carried on to other forms of social media (Washington Post). This event is extremely important as it became prevalent that men that used their power and position in the industry for their sexual advances would then begin to feel the consequences of their actions.
Harvey Weinstein became publically shamed and scrutinized. Many people shared a sub hashtag called, #myharveyweinstein in which women shared their workplace sexual harassment and assault stories. A powerful man in Hollywood, Weinstein was ultimately dethroned, as of May 25 following the start of #MeToo, and arrested to be charged with rape and sexual abuse (CNN).
Days after the initial tweet by Alyssa Milano, Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney sent out a tweet that expressed how she was sexually assaulted by a gymnast doctor Larry Nassar. More than 156 woman had come out and accused Nassar of sexual abuse of some kind. In one situation he had impregnated a girl and she miscarried. Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison (NBC).
The #MeToo movement brings shock value to any industry but really shows how well of a cover up can exist to keep someone’s image. Take Bill Cosby for example, once thought to be America’s Dad is now going to prison after he been found guilty of drugging and raping multiple women (NBC). Bill Cosby going to Jail represents a time where no matter the status and illustrious career built through decades, #MeToo is stronger.
Something to understand about the #MeToo movement is that it is not exclusively a hashtag reserved for women. It is a hashtag that is meant to be used as a way for victims of any gender, race, age, and orientation to speak out against sexual crimes. During the many accusations from high profile actresses towards Harvey Weinstein, Terry Crews felt it become necessary that he mentioned how the situation gave him PTSD because he himself was a victim of sexual abuse. He admitted in a series of tweets that he did not take any actions at the time in fear of being blacklisted in Hollywood (TheGuardian). Now Terry Crews is the face of redefining masculinity and certain stigmas that men cannot be a victim of a sexual crime. This is another example of the changing of culture due to the #MeToo movement.
The #MeToo movement is working in every industry and at every level not only promoting the awareness of the issue, but putting into place policies that can acknowledge and hopefully prevent the issue. The changes including redefining and clarifying existing policies to all workers. Training videos on anti-harassment at work now become a focal point of the HR staff. Because the issue is now out in the open and been justified as an extreme issue, behaviors that demonstrate any type of sexual harassment, including language and sexual advances, are no longer tolerable. Matt Lauer from the Today Show was fired for raping a woman in his office. Rather than hide this issue and pay this woman for her silence, the network, NBC, confronted this controversy directly, showing both the co-hosts surprise and disdain now to their former co-worker while justifying his firing. Because of #MeToo an environment not only in the workplace but anywhere no one should be afraid to speak their truth about sexual crimes. We now hold leaders and public figures to be exemplary role models for this newly forming culture. This is why we cannot take lightly accusations against Brett Kavanaugh raping a woman while drunk or Donald Trump with the “locker room talk” language he uses when referring to woman. As a society we have begun to disdain people for behaviors as such and it is due largely to #MeToo and the brave victims that spoke out.

555 Clayton Street (Haight Ashbury)
The vacancy blight personally offends me. I think it’s a crime against cities, and a crime against its residents to treat these neighborhoods as nothing more than safe little pockets in which to stash cash.
I am uncovering all I can about all of the persistent vacancies in my neighborhood. I’m a homeowner and would love to sue them for a dollar in tandem with a bunch of other homeowners.
All of the information here was gathered from internet searches or conversations with people in the neighborhood.
Owner:
“Borgfeldt Company Inc” which seems to have no income source other than this single building, at least which I’ve been able to find. It was incorporated in 1957.
Since the entire goddamned behemoth building is appraised at 215,000 (!!!) it’s reasonable to assume that’s probably when it was purchased. There’s no record online of the building’s last sale. I can’t link directly to the history of the page on the website for the SF planning department, but you can run a search here. This is a screenshot, though.
The agent for service of process is Dawn Maroney, who appears to live in Danville. There’s another agent listed on a different website named Margaret Steiner, so I looked her up on google to get a phone number. She’s an attorney in Arizona at Lane and Nach. I called her to complain about the blight caused by the vacant storefronts. She was first condescending, and then highly irritated by my questions about the blight, and said she’d “pass it on to her client and maybe they’d call me back.” I could practically hear her rolling her eyes.
Looking up Dawn Maroney, she appears to be married to a Terry Maroney, who runs an insurance business and seems to have once donated to Rudy Giuliani’s campaign? I found that on one internet search but can’t seem to replicate it. If so, fucking fabulous. Suburbs, stay in the fucking suburbs, please. If not, they’re still assholes. I wonder if they’ve walked the neighborhood in the past twenty years.
This is a giant building at the corner of Haight and Clayton. It has five storefronts, and three are currently vacant. The windows are covered over in paper, and there are expired notices forbidding trespassing, and there is often trash strewn about on the sidewalk.
I went into one of the businesses which is currently open to inquire about renting one of the vacant spaces. The employees there told me that there would be signs posted in the windows, and that the owners had no plans to rent out the space until the city was done tearing up the roads.
There’s some permit that seems to have been pulled for a soft story retrofit back in March; however there does not seem to be progress on that front, and there’s no indication from the other businesses of having to close. The owners seem to have not responded to the complaints about the vacancies.
It’s possible that they need to rip up the bottom story for a soft story retrofit since there are large windows, but it’s awfully weird that they let it sit that long and then ramped up the effort around the time that people started complaining.
Landlords who are real estate professionals lose no cash flow whatsoever, effectively, for vacancies; they charge an impossibly optimistic amount justified, they say, by the building’s cap rate, and fueled by a slim to none chance of getting a major retail chain in the building, and then write the money off on their taxes, and get it back from tax shelters. It’s very common; what’s so insidious about this building in particular is that they don’t even try to pretend that they’re looking for tenants.
1614 Haight Street used to be Haight Street Shoe Repair. It’s been vacant since Carlos retired at the end of 2015. That’s 33 months at the time of this writing.
1608 Haight Street, formerly the store “Kids Only,” vacant since the end of February, 2016. That’s 31 months at the time of this writing. Photo stolen from Hoodline.

NBA scores 2017: Victor Oladipo can’t stop, won’t stop
Oladipo’s 38-point outburst is becoming commonplace for the East’s breakout star of the season
The Indiana Pacers found themselves down 19 to a 12-19 Brooklyn Nets team. They were getting out-hustled, out-gunned and flat-out outplayed.
Then Victor Oladipo reminded the basketball world and Pacers fans alike why he’s the new face of a franchise that dealt its old star for him, and why he’s a sure lock for the 2018 All-Star Game, possibly even an all-star starter.
Victor Oladipo posts 38 PTS, 6 AST to propel the @Pacers to victory in OT!#Pacers http://pic.twitter.com/msV0Yutsol
— NBA (@NBA) December 24, 2017
Oladipo finished with 38 points on 13-of-23 shooting to lead the Pacers to a 123-119 overtime win over the Nets. Twelve of those 38 points came in the fourth quarter with another six in overtime.
Saturday night was Oladipo’s 24th game with 20 or more points this season. Before this year, he never had more than 26 such games. Barring a catastrophic setback, it’s safe to say he’ll reach a new milestone.
After a seemingly joyless year last season, the Pacers have become fun to watch again, and Oladipo is at the center of their resurgence. Vic is averaging 25 points, 5.4 rebounds, four assists, 1.8 steals and a block per game. If those aren’t All-Star numbers in the Eastern Conference, I don’t know what is.
What’s more is that a Pacers team few tabbed to be successful this season is now 19-14, a half-game above the Detroit Pistons for the fourth seed in the East. And if Oladipo continues this tear of a season, there’s no telling where Indiana could end up come playoff time.
Even the Warriors go cold sometimes
Despite a 11-game winning streak, Golden State lost on Saturday and hot potato’d the best record in the league back to Houston. Sure, they miss Stephen Curry, and sure, a matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas looms large. In this matchup, it was really just a matter of the Warriors missing every shot imaginable, though — it’s not like their opponent, the Denver Nuggets, is typically a defensive juggernaut.
Specifically, Klay Thompson exploded for ..... 15 points on 6-of-21 shooting, while going 1-of-10 behind the arc. Kevin Durant lit it up with just 18 points, and he missed all five three-pointers attempted. (He was 6-of-17 shooting for the game.) It was a miserable all around showing for the Warriors stars, who never found their footing as the team shot just 39 percent overall and 3-of-27 behind the arc.
But hey, every winning streak ends eventually. See you on Christmas Day.
The Celtics made the Bulls look foolish
Forget the scoreboard, just look at ankles.
