absolutely bananas headcanon about why Aurora Legion and Illuminae files are in the same universe
ok… so like, I’m almost sure of this, because of that one plague that’s mentioned in both books, lystergia or something. So, you may ask, “But Mr. Metal what about [fold/aliens/spaceships]” and I say shut your mouth please I’m getting there:
The Fold: they just…. Stopped using it. They decided it was too dangerous after the rahaam because of rouge spores or some shit and also annoying that realistically your most veteran combat crews are like 25 years old generally (looking at you aurora legion) so they started using wormholes instead. Much cleaner, no weird ancient aliens leaving their old glassware around, no psychosis, just good old fashioned giving space time a good wedgie. This is why the Alexander has a big bugger off wormhole in its belly, and has low ranking crew that have like, spouses and kids.
why no aliens? Because Kerenza is like, 10000 people tops and most of them are dead, and it’s in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. You can’t take much family along, so I would bet against beretreskans (even fin talks about needed connections) and I just don’t think the syldrathi would work on a shitty little backwater for a human company. It’s just… not in their nature.
governments: is it that big of a stretch to assume terragov did a big rebrand after it turns out their intelligence wing is full of fun guys? (I know very funny you can shoot me later) also the other governments aren’t mentioned because like… why would they be? Nobody knew what was going on until after the events of the book, so why would they be mentioned?
the ships: I forgot what I wanted to say here but something something still have marines something something.
AI, AKA AIDAN you cannot kill people: is it that much of a stretch to assume that AIs can go from little crazy pocket pad sized giga brain intelligences to city sized “I can calculate all of space time to rip holes in it” Uberbrain in like 150-200 years?
more to come maybe but I need sleep to regain energy to scream at more maybe tommorow.

Okay I don’t normally fuck with angst because I’m emotionally softer than a marshmallow but I do have one (1) angsty AC headcannon
My hc is that when Orion happened, there was a small force of free Syldrans who heard the call for TDF reservists and responded to fight the Unbroken. Their aid was wiped from record by TerraGov to justify continuing the Terra/Syldra war.
The part where this gets angsty is that I reckon that the Jones’ mother would have been a part of that aiding force. Meaning she would have had to be there to watch the man she loved and father of her children die, knowing said children’s birthday was the following week and neither of their parents would be there to see it.
Anyway… do with my headcannon what you will

Auri and Tyler have a lot in common?
Not in a romantic way, but like...he's got the best grades of anyone ever, she's canonically very studious too, and talks about winning competitions and studying to get the best grades to be allowed on the Hadfield mission.
She's furious with her Dad and Patrice, but that doesn't stop her going on the Hadfield mission. Like Kaufman and Kristoff could have made her more ordinary, and just written her as a 17 kid being sent to live with their dad and worked canon around that. But they didn't, becuase Auri's clever and she's determined and she's brave and so's Tyler.
There are other things too: the way neither of them use proper curse words, the way they sass people (I don't know the proper way to explain it but its not the same bitchy or funny sarcasm that Fin, Scarlett and even Cat use. It's charming, I think?, for Auri as well as Tyler. I can't find a good example rn but to me they just have that vibe), the way they get angry (and they do: Ty's willing to throw the first punch onboard Bellerphon, Auri never lets anyone insult her to her face, and people try), the Gilwraeth siblings, the telepathic powers, the plans that are 90% good luck and 10% Being Very Skilled, the way the both have faith even though the story highlights Tyler's more (Auri woke up in the future and placed her faith in Battle Leader de Stoy's warning above the TerraGov, she trusted Squad 312, she followed the Eshvaren. I can't remember a moment when she ever truly wavered in what the right thing (or the Next Right Thing) to do was?).
Anyway. I might have had another point but I've forgotten it now.

[SF] Luna for the Rich, Terra for the Poor
And on and on, Luna circled over all of Terra, in her countless and predictable orbit. But no longer was Luna the friendly and welcoming moon that it had been to the people of Terra in the days of yesteryear. All across the face of the Planet, the people now looked up, and saw no longer the man on the moon, but the cold, snarling face of the TerraGov, as well as his strong arms reaching down as if to strangle the people of Terra itself. Luna indeed cast a permanent, suffocating shadow upon the once vivacious planet.
Across all of Terra, the tired workers of that globe now toiled to produce nearly everything, just to sell up to Luna. And it was not endearing work, either. And Luna ruled with a cold, uncaring, iron hand. They did not pay well. It was illegal to sell products to anyone before the quota ceiling was reached, it was illegal to slaughter and eat their own farm animals, or their own food, it was illegal to express resentment towards Luna, it was illegal to demonstrate any budding individuality (that was greatly frowned upon, all actions must serve Luna) and countless other things that Luna herself was allowed to enjoy but Earth wasn’t.
There were administrators everywhere, to enforce their rule, to quash revolts, to keep the cheap products flowing upward, to keep the collective minds of the workers withered, dark, and repressed, and to keep the wealthy administrators completely free and decadent. Many even began to revere and respect their chains. But not all. Some desired to break them.
…
“Good day sir,” The messenger said over the radio, across the solar system. “but I’m afraid to tell you that the working members of the American Continent have fully revolted! “Revolted?!” The Head Administrator of South America yelled, pounding his desk. “How do you mean?” The messenger continued,“They seem to have seized most of the continent at this time. They are declaring that all of your rightful agricultural and industrial machinery belongs entirely to themselves. They have announced that they will no longer trade openly with us, instead keeping their products all to themselves. They are mob-killing our ground-level administrators in the streets. They have seized the Andes Space Elevator. We now have almost no access to Terran goods. They seem to be violent towards any diplomacy, and have said that they will declare a state of war unto any force that tries to directly intervene. It is important that we act fast, lest they incite more revolutions! I myself would advise simply striking their ports and communication centers directly from orbit, but this is of course for you to decide.” “In due time,” The administrator said, trying to gain his wits. He disconnected the radio. His hands clasped onto his face.
“I never believed I’d see the day, but holy shit, they’ve finally snapped,” he said to himself, “those damned Terrans and all this ‘motherland’ shit!” He looked thoughtfully, yet angrily, out of the window of his lunar estate. “My great-grandfather, he built this moon up from the ground! Almost every domed city here is ‘cause of him! We’ve done countless amounts of good for the Earth, given them my tech, my countless innovations! Yet those damned Terrans now want to starve us! God Damnit.God. Damnit.” He phoned back into the radio. Tears of rage were boiling in his heart. He pounded his desk some more while the radio established a good link with the relay.
He sighed. “I’ve decided it best to simply destroy their ports, their cities. If these revolutionaries claim any more ports, we up here are doomed. I command you to Launch everything we got from Mare Imbrium and Tycho Crater. Sink them into the sea!”
If you, say, put your ear to the floor, you may have heard the sound of churning machinery resonating distantly inside the tinny moon, as missiles were loaded for launch. And perhaps if you listened more closely, you would hear the rumble of the mass drivers as they propelled the rocket payloads into a hyperbolic impact trajectory. Or, if you looked closely, you would see dozens and dozens of star-like objects flying at ludicrous speeds, impossibly quickly at the Earth, all in lines converging upon the spaceports of North and South America.
“I have a small request for you rebels. That is, that you stand down, and surrender. You will enjoy home rule of your continent, we will allow you to settle your own disputes between yourselves. We only ask the small favor that you promptly return the elevator to it’s rightful owner, or face ultimate and total nuclear destruction.”
In the pages of history, this was not a wise saying, even if you could sympathize with the lunar parasites. The rebels were really no idiots. They expected that something like this would happen, and made the right preparations. The de facto generals and leaders, they actually laughed at how timely the preemptive lunar strike had occurred, and how ironic his words would be. Very quick math showed that the moon would soon in fact be in the perfect position, actually.
The rebellion would soon indeed return the elevator to Luna. In fact, the anchor point, held taught by the Earth’s spin, could be flung directly towards the administrator’s estate at the push of a button, given split-second timing.
And on and on, Luna circled over all of Terra, in her countless and predictable orbit. But no longer was Luna the mean and punishing moon that it had been to the people of Terra in the days of yesteryear. All across the face of the Planet, the people now looked up, and saw no longer the cold, snarling face of the TerraGov, but the man on the moon returned to his rightful throne.

Aurora Legion Installations
this has been bothering me for a few days and I figure now is the time I write it out
so without further ado:
Aurora Legion permanent installations:
struck through numbers indicate a deactivated installation
AL-01: The Aurora Academy. Stationed in the Aurora system, this is the beating heart if the legion. It hosts primary training facilities for all legionnaires, Rearm and Refit facilities, The offices of both current admirals (or admiral equivalents), Centcomm for all Aurora legion missions, a small exclave of Aurora Labs, and [Data Redacted]. The oldest station in the fleet, currently undergoing phases 6 & 7 of expansion (circa AL:152)
AL-02: Aurora Yards. Stationed in the Aurora system’s Asteroid belt, this humongous shipyard produces everything from AL ground craft, to the Blockhouse class carriers. Any heavily damaged craft arriving at any Aurora Legion installation will be shipped here to upgrades, refit, and repair. Currently overseen by Chief Mechanical officer (the big gear head), Tobias Crookes. [Admin credentials accepted, Welcome Founder_03] Next designated CMO: Finian De Karan De Seel. Due to cycle from Flight status in AL:157
AL-03: Aurora Labs. Stationed in [Admin Redacted]. Aurora Labs is the foremost research laboratory in the known galaxy. It is from here that the designs of everything from the lowliest disruptor pistol to the Greatest of prototype AL battleships flow. Manned by a mix of Flight duty retired (FDR) Gearheads and Brains, it is widely considered to have the highest number of brain cells per capita in all of the Milky Way. [Admin Credentials Accepted, Welcome Founder_03] Aurora labs is also where various Rahaam hulks were taken after AL:150, current priority is salvaging Terran Nuclear ordinance and reverse engineering Syldrathi Pulse cannons. The Aurora Legion has many enemies, it’s time we can fight them on equal footing.
AL-04: Aurora Base, Initial headquarters of The Aurora Legion, in service until the end of Phase 1. Stationed on Luna, based out of a former TDF Sigint site. The legion rapidly outgrew this facility, and it was officially struck from the registrar in AL:45 [Admin Credentials Accepted] AL-04 was reactivated in AL:148 At the command of Admiral Adam’s to catalogue GIA transmissions for evidence of the Rahaam. Current status: still operating, Monitoring Unbroken Communications.
AL-05: Aurora Summit: Informally known as the Face Space, This is a station located in the neutral Zone, manned primarily by FD:R Faces. It is here where most AL sponsored peace talks take place. Also Acts as the inrout for most non AL goods into the Legion. Faces make for good trade negotiators. Expansion needed After AL:150 due to Rahaam induced instability.
AL-06: Aurora Barracks: Aurora Barracks, located in the Aurora System, as a trailing substation behind Aurora Academy, is the base for Large fleet elements (like Blockhouse class carriers, and formerly the ex-TDF Indefatigable and Dauntless battleships), and AL ground forces. These so called “Pounders” are FD:R tanks that have chosen to renew their enlistment. These pounders then become everything from drop troops to station security. They generally get where they need to go on Blockhouses, and will act as semi-permanent peacekeepers and occupation forces.
[Further entries Hidden]
[Admin credentials Accepted, Welcome Founder_03]
AL-00: The Blacksite. Created in AL:151 from the hulk of the Ex-TDF dauntless, AL-00 is the place where the Aurora legion sends things that they don’t want known. It’s two main functions are R&D and Prisoner Detainment. Research includes Weaponization of Eshvaren Crystal, Stealth vessels, and high yield low contamination Nuclear Warheads. Originally the AL handed prisoners over to the GIA and TerraGov, but given the general institutional distrust of The AL after AL:150, it was decided to keep the most dangerous, and most valuable prisoners, under legion control.

disjointed, disconnected, and downright dumb thoughts that have occurred to me over the past few days
There is no way the “go with plan b” necklace that scar wears doesn’t look gaudy as all get out. Like diamond encrusted golden cross gaudy. Like god lord. To fit the script, the gem, the backing and everything? That thing must look downright awful.
does the Aurora legion have dog tags? They are a militarized institution so it’s a bit odd we never hear them mentioned
why is there never any discussion of like, any of the other governments of the galaxy? We barely know how terragov, the AL, and the unbroken work, so what the hell are the free syldrathi and the beretreskans doing?
how did the Rahaam get their hands? Claws? Tendrils? Into the GIA? Did they just like, try and attract them with something? Did they hijack a routine visit? What even is the deal with the GIA anyways I feel like we need to know more about how they go about being an evil gestalt weed entity.

Forever?
much like a falling air conditioning unit, inspiration has struck me as I wander.
So, I present, an outline for an AU, where things didn’t turn out well.
Situation Report:
15th October 2390
Compiled by agent 736782
For the eyes of Admiral Tyler Jones Only
As it stands, the Legion is stretched thin, beaten, and bloody. We are fighting in all sides, and can no longer in good conscience call ourselves a humanitarian organization. We are peace keepers now. We have occupied 1/3 of the former Terragov holdings, including Earth, are the only reason Sempirternity hasn’t declared independence, and now are the only reason the Waywalkers exist. The situation is rapidly becoming untenable sir. At this rate, we have 10 months before we can no longer replenish our losses.
The Main Players:
The Aurora Legion: Once the shining city upon the hill the entire galaxy looked towards, the legion is now fighting a desperate war it cannot hope to win. The Reforged close in from all sides, TerraGov has collapsed outright and much of the TDF is now AWOL. The legion is unrecognizable in its current state, having now occupied Sol, and much of Terra Govs other colonies. Forced to subsume much of the GIA, the legion has resorted to betraying its founding ideals in the name of survival. Currently led by Admiral Tyler Jones, who fights tooth and nail against the dying of the light he fought to hard to save before.
The Reforged: The assorted factions of the splintered Unbroken now rebuilt by the hand of a New Archon. Stripped of the old xenophobia and elitism, the Reforged accept any into their ranks provided they can prove their martial might. The dominant power in the galaxy, and the sworn enemy of the legion for their sheltering of the Waywalkers. Their armadas prowl the stars, hunting for prey. Led by the vicious Archon Idrabann.
The Changed: A nomadic mass of quasi-religious Zealots, this mysterious group wanders the galaxy, helping and harming in seemingly random patterns. Officially neutral in the war, neither side wishes to risk their ire, for their weapons are the finest in the galaxy. LED by a pair of unknown individuals, one seemingly human, and the other seemingly Beretreskan, based on voice patterns. these individuals are known as the Cured and the Forgiven. Significance of this is unknown. Reports indicate all members are mechanically augmented, with high augments corresponding to higher status.
Squad 312:
Tyler Jones: Admiral of the Aurora Legion, fighting a losing battle. Personality growing increasingly fractured from mounting stress, PTSD, and Depression.
Catherine Brannock: Revived. Currently serving as Tyler’s right hand and Head of Intelligence. Prone to referring to self as “we”. Aurora O’Malley: Deceased as of 2384. Killed by Free Syldrathi Way walker terrorist cell. Consciousness currently in the Rahaam Constellation.
Finian De Karen De Seel: missing since 2390. Lost after freak gravitational anomaly in the Fold on an expedition with Scarlett jones. Possible connection to the Changed.
Scarlett Jones: missing since 2390. Lost after freak gravitational anomaly in the Fold on an expedition with Finian De Karen De See. Possible connection to the Changed.
Kalliis Idrabaan Gilwraith: Last seen 2384 during the Massacre at Idron. Wanted by the galactic court for 193 counts of Murder. Rumors suggest he fled the planet and took control of an unbroken ship nearby.
Ok spoilers below for the major things I want to do with the characters
What actually happened:
Tyler is currently fucked up by basically being stretched across multiple timelines. The AU we see at the end of the first book is inexplicably tied to him. He is basically being ripped apart by time itself. Completely reliant on Cat emotionally.
Cat wasn’t removed from the Rahaam cleanly. And she dragged some of it back with her. Also now the spymaster of the legion. Maybe has some plans to drag Tyler back with her to the Rahaam.
aurora fucking died. Simple as. Some waywalkers were mad about Kal being on the planet and so tried to blow him up. They missed him and killed Aurora. She is also in the Rahaam now.
Scar and fin got fed to the eshvarens library. And they survived. Barely. Also ya know total psychological collapse and regeneration. They are fucking freaky. Now are attempting to ascend all life to mechanical perfection. Still very in love and it’s cute when they aren’t both eldritch horror robots.
Kal. Kal kal kal.
yeah Kal became his dad but insane. He butchered 193 people with his bare hands when Aurora died and then became the archon on the new unbroken. He hates the way walkers for killing his besh’mai and hates the legion even more for sheltering them. Started war when he heard about project Returner through spies. Tyler refuses to allow them to use it, because ripping consciousnesses from a giant gestalt that can warp reality is a bad fucking idea. Flip flops between basically his dad and completely deranged.
Oh and Saedii died. No particular reason I just couldn’t make her fit in here.

I’m so interested in Tyler looking more like his mum! Can we have a part three?
sure can!
~~
The prison cell was cold and Scarlett was confused and exhausted. Her mind raced as she tried not to show anything, instead just resting her head on Fin’s shoulder.
“Are you okay, what was up with you getting dragged away for questioning?” Fin whispers, although she knows he would drop it if she asked. She shrugs.
“Honestly, I’m not sure. But I think I knew my interrogator,” she says and frowns, mirroring Fin’s furrowed eyebrows.
“Oh, you’ve had a lot of run-ins with Unbroken soldiers?” he asks, a touch of his signature sarcasm lilting the words.
“No, that’s the problem. I can’t shake that I know him but I have no idea how or why he’s familiar,” she says and Fin hums and consider.
“Was it that green-eyed Waywalker that was near scary boss lady?” He asks after a minute and she nods. “You know, this is gonna sound absolutely batshit, but from the quick look I got, it seemed like you two are related,” he says and she sits up and turns to him.
“What?”
“Well, I- uh, you know how I like looking at your face? And I don’t hide how I do so often,” he starts and she blushes a little, “what that means is that I know your facial features. And I know that that Waywalker had your nose, your cheeks and your hairline. And usually those are the sorts of traits shared by closely related family, y’know?” he explains and she just sits there processing.
“I suppose my father would never tell anyone if my mother was Syldrathi,” she says. “But that’s crazy, not possible,” she shakes her head and rubs her face. “I think we’re both just too exhausted to think straight,” Fin looks like he wants to say more but thinks better of it, continuing his look out for Zila.
~
“I think something is off with the story of them killing all those Syldrathi. They were in GIA custody when our ship was blown up, only their Longbow was around when the Free Syldrans went down. Half their squad looks they could be blown over by a gust of wind and one of them is half-Waywalker anyway, so she would feel their deaths. It just doesn’t add up,” Tyler mutters to himself, pacing back and forth. Saedii looks up from her uniglass.
“What solution does make sense then, Ty? The GIA may be an intergalactically formidable entity, but we all now TerraGov won’t move against the StarSlayer,” Tyler waves a hand at that.
“What if there is a corruption at the GIA. I’m just saying that it is strange that a seemingly well-ish behaved Aurora Legion Squad went that rogue,” he muses and Saedii considers his words.
“Look, yes, I think it odd, but we don’t know enough about them to say that what we have been told isn’t the truth. I know that the knowledge of your sister has thrown you, but you can’t let it cloud your judgement or your orders. You don’t know what she is capable of or whether it is different to what you’re capable of. Regardless, the StarSlayer wants them all in his custody,” she argues and he turns to her, running a hand over his braids.
“I suppose you’re right. Just have a feeling I can’t shake,” he concedes.
“Yes, I know what that’s like, why do you think you share my bed?” Saedii asks sardonically and he blows her an over exaggerated kiss.
“Ha, you’re so funny,” he approaches her desk and leans over it towards her and just as they are about to kiss, the ship shakes.
~
Scarlett and Fin race along the corridors, trying to avoid Unbroken soldiers and fight their way through the shuddering structure to the Zero. There’s too much smoke in the air to really see in front of them properly, but they can make out enough.
Apparently not enough to stop them from barrelling into another pair as they crossed the near the bridge.
Scarlett hauls Fin back right before he walk into the same Syldrathi that had interrogated her earlier. He is holding up his Templar, who had a large gash in her side, bleeding purple steadily down the side of her uniform.
Scarlett stares at the man across from her and he stares back, his knife at the ready, green eyes calculating but she can also see in the set of his brows that he is immensely more worried about the woman in his arms.
The ship rattles around them again and the man looks around, seems to come to a conclusion with a groan.
“An'la téli saii, sister mine,” he finally says, such quick Syldrathi that she thinks he must have misspoke. And then, with a concerned look, he fully picks up the Templar and walks away.
Scarlett stares after him, wide eyed, until Fin grabs her arm and drags her along until they hit the steadily evacuating docking bay.
As soon as their on board and the Zero is closed, Zila goes pedal to the metal and they are thrown around in their cockpit chairs.
Scarlett just stairs back at the retreating ship, wide eyed, confused and really wishing her dad hadn’t died before telling her she had a brother.
~~
*peace*
