“The known portraits of Prince Arthur show a tall boy, possibly in his early teenage years. He has auburn hair and pale skin and a long, far, angular face. He has a slim and wiry build and is dressed very richly with intricate pieces of jewellery in his hat and around his neck.

His father Henry VII was also known for these physical characteristics, and the prince also shares the hoods and bagsed eyes of his grandmother Margaret Beaufort.

Some Cod Empire Headcanons

Clothes in the cod empire are often seen as bland and boring to outsiders but its generally full of symbolism.

While the mostly green, grey and brown fabrics appear to all look the same intricately woven or embroidered accents on the clothes made from red and blue fabric usually tell you a lot of the wearer.

From the embroidery and the kind of jewellery they wear you can tell who you're talking to and what their believes are.

Jewellery is worn often and proudly even if its made from "trash" as the other empires would say. Bits of Mezalean clay pots and seaglass are often found, edges washed away by the waters that got them into the swamp in the first place, amber and spun glass contrasting the unnatural colours of the glazed terracotta. Metals and the rare precious gems washed ashore or unearthed by the citizens tell of wealth. Bones of cattle are usually carved into intricate animal shaped beads while teeth of all kinds of fish accent and contrast the rounded appearance of most of the beads used. Generally, theyre worn as bracelets, necklaces or fastened to clothes with intricately designed pins made from all kinds of material (although metals are favoured due to longevity)

For big events theres usually some salmon to be burned ritually, the fire is thought to cleanse them from their sin against codfolk which in turn bestows blessing on the codfolk for being so considerate (it is believed that this ritual was started as an excuse to burn large amount of salmon)

Along with handmade beads or jewellery the most common gift is amulets of varying kinds. Each 13 months they renew home blessings, usually inscribed on a clay plate and hung over the doors of their homes. Family and close friends get gifted amulets made from various metals, copper being the most common as it is a great conduit. The lines carved into these is usually filled with a lapis paste and then hung to dry over fire.

The lapis paste itself sometimes has different materials worked into it although usually this is mostly done by priests. Most commonly found are crushed up pearls for a fine shimmer or the finest shaved gold youll find on the continent which is meant to enhance spells regarding luck and health.

You can often find pretty and unique bottles of water in the homes of Codfolk as they collect water from the nearest body of water during an important event in ones life. Examples for this are a birth, marriage or death of a loved one.

Vanitas

Vanitas, emptiness or worthlessness in latin stemming from the idea that material goods are empty (traditional Christian). 

Vanitas painting surfaced in Norway during the 16th and 17th century, encouraging it’s audience to reflect on matters such as life and death, things like skulls, books and flowers were very common amongst these works as a result of their power to illustrate the temperance of life and passing of time collectively. While there are pieces that contain all of the above, there was a distant spilt between two categories of paintings at this time . With skulls and candles representative of death while flowers, jewellery and books expanded on the “fleeting nature of earthly pleasures”. 

One of the most important aspects of the Vanitas genre was that it was considered to be a sub-genre of still life painting. Thus, Vanitas paintings were simply a variation of the traditional still life form. Typical still-life paintings consisted of inanimate and ordinary objects, such as flowers, food, and vases, with the attention of the artwork being placed on these objects alone.

1. Still Life with Books and Manuscripts and a Skull by Edwaert Collier, 1663

When I first saw this painting, I felt very drawn to it. I feel it is a good example of the blend between chaos and calm in the sense of minimalism. With the open books and curled up pages, I get the sense of things unfinished, as thought the creator thought they would have more time left and death came unexpectedly, as supported by the skull and glass timer. The layout of the objects is messy, disorderly as though the end came as a shock, things fell and then were captured where they lay. The ivy suggests some time may have passed or adds a sense of hope and possibility with something new. The more luxurious looking green tablecloth adds a pop of colour that comments the more neutral tonality in the overall image while symbolising money, growth as well as nature and new beginnings. The piece of art has been painted in a way that creates the look that the scene has been lit from above and to the left, creating a smooth highlight on the glass and cuts through the heart of the works. 

2. This painting stood put to me because it is a calmer, more subtle example of Still Life and Vanitas. With dark shadows in the top left very apparent, the skull stands out with highlight like affect. It sits on top of books and papers, with a quill adjacent reiterating the idea that death takes over and stops us in our tracks. With neutral background and plain surface under the objects, there is more focus on the textures and details of the well considered objects. Also looking closer, there is the remains of a candle wick attached to the terracotta coloured object in the far left, adding a more subtle texture and element.

I came across this photograph which led me to the original works. I discovered that many of the objects I had already chosen to include in my image could be found in the Vanitas or vice versa.  I feel this is a strong image because it is clear when the inspiration stems from with careful consideration in regards to placement, lighting and choice in objects. It looks like the set has been lit from the upper right corner which casts light onto the 

For my image I will be using a handful of personal objects that have a lot of meaning to me. This includes books, crystals and statues, all of which I feel have different significance. I also tired to include various sizes, colours and textures. I will be photographing this on my kitchen table, as it is where the best light comes in where I live and I can leave it to observe. For this brief it is my aim to create something more meaningful to me as I feel all of the briefs so far have been less so and I enjoy putting myself finto my work when there is opportunity. Time, life and death are things I find myself thinking of often, but also things I feel I have ties with. So when I found the concept of Vanitas, the research and set up for my image came easy.
