Miami WS Q1: Julia Grabher [10] def. Priska Madelyn Nugroho [WC] 7-6(7), 7-6(2) Match Recap + Stats
🎥 Miami qualies feed
One of the matches to start the day in the Women's Singles sector in the Miami Masters was a stand-off between the tenth seed Julia Grabher and wild card Priska Madelyn Nugroho. Priska has been on a roll by winning numerous singles and doubles titles in 2022, while Grabher has been building up some interesting results on the ITFs and 125s as well along the way. Although on paper this might have been straightforward, this turned out to be an extremely competitive match.
Initially, the turning point was how Grabher converted her second break point (which was made as a result of Priska's double fault) to 3-1 with a forehand winner, confirming her controlled aggression throughout the match. However, Priska found her way back to break thanks to her running forehand winner before holding to 3-3. Six games later, although both players came in a clutch when they were at least 2 points behind, the first set still ended with a tie-breaker. Here, the initial differential was Grabher's forehand winner won on Priska's serves for 2 set points to 6-4, all of which were saved because of an unreturned serve and Grabher's volley error. Unfortunately, a minor mistake here was proven to be costly, as Priska's double fault resulted in Grabher's fourth set point, which was converted by the latter's unreturned serve to take the first set 7-6(7).
To follow, the second set had a similar flow, although it turned out almost differently. At the almost same scoreline, Grabher broke first to 2-1 thanks to her forehand winner in response to Priska's slice, before Priska broke back again to 3-3 thanks to her return depth. She indeed was back on serve, but it was a tough hold as she had to face 4 deuces and an additional break point before her half-volley assured her hold at 4-3. Somehow, while the net game had been the slight edge for Priska in most points, the failed volley was the reason behind her being broken to 5-6, hence Grabher had the opportunity to serve for the match. Priska dug again, hence she was able to convert his sixth break point at the expense of Grabher's error, crediting the former's volley again to create her fifth break point.
In contrast to the first set tie-breaker, the second set tie-breaker was more straightforward. Priska started more nervously by double-faulting, followed by Grabher's continued controlled aggression thanks to her cross-court winners and accurate service games. Priska's failed forehand moonball attempts resulted in Grabher's match point creation to 6-2, before she converted it to take the second set and ultimately win the match 7-6(2) after her working cross-court forehand winner.
Then, the stats would like to have a few words:
Tumblr media
📸 Miami qualies feed
According to the stats, Priska had the slight edge on her first serves thanks to her 7 aces, then her ability to land the first serves in 67%, and how she won 6% more points from her first serves compared to Grabher. However, her second serves appeared more vulnerable because of her 6 double faults and 33% second serves winning percentage, hence Grabher could go after Priska's second serves and produce winners from there as well.
Furthermore, Grabher won more points thanks to her controlled aggression despite her dysfunctional net game at times. Priska had her chances thanks to her net game and matching Grabher's pace with 11 opportunities to break. However, Grabher converted 60% of her break opportunities there thanks to her more composure on how she controlled the rhythm in the pressure points, maximizing her chances thanks to producing some critical cross-court forehand winners, which were proven working at times.
In tomorrow's second qualifying round, Grabher will face Tereza Martincova, who earlier defeated Simona Waltert 6-3, 6-2. While this could be an interesting match to follow, this completed first round match could also be an experience-enriching, learning opportunity for Priska to move forward. Hopefully, we can see more from her in the future!
