re: the canon square, i will freely admit that i had no reason to make him and hop scottish other than I Felt Like It cuz that definitely has no basis in canon lol. i also don't think they intended for leon to be that much older than hop? but forget that too i gave them a ten-year gap. hop has never known a world before champion leon. this is of course Fine And Not Poignant At All

oh yeah also i didn't mark any of the fandom-related squares because i know even less about what the swsh fandom thinks about anything. (other than, like, they could stand to calm down about rose somewhat.) i'm over three years late and everyone's moved on anyway! but you know? that's ok. i like being the person i am now while liking swsh characters :)

♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon

Quirks & Hobbies: I haven't done a lot of embellishments on how I role play Tenzō and what he does on his alone time for his hobbies to be really explored yet. However, I imagine I'd write him reading a lot and not just about architecture. He likes to read cheesy romance novels because it helps him learn about his own feelings towards people, romantic or platonic. He never really had family or friends in his younger years, and in Root that was taken advantage of. I would also think being out in a garden of his own creation would be something he would enjoy doing as well, creating new life, sustaining it, it's how he learns how to care for/about something. Also, mediation in his older years. It helps quiet his mind and reflect on some things to help him overcome some of his traumas. As for quirks, I would think he has a thing for always keeping his bedroom/house/apartment organized. He has a quirk of always trying to fix anything that is broken, or replace something that is damaged. He also likes to take care of others, and tries to keep up with taking care of himself. He's good at hiding whenever he's not taking care of himself though, so no one ever knows when he's not at his best unless they see it first hand happening or catch him in a vulnerable moment unexpectedly. He doesn't reach out very often unless it is someone he absolutely trusts like Itachi, Kakashi or Temari. Even so, he doesn't like to burden others with his problems because he knows that they are his problems and no one else's, he is mindful that everyone has their own that they're dealing with, but he will absolutely be there in a heartbeat if anyone comes to him with their problems.

Sleep HC: Tenzō doesn't sleep well at all by himself, he has night terrors and PTSD from Root and the beatings he received from Danzo. Though no one would know it besides Kakashi and maybe Itachi since he's worked with them on missions, he hides it very well otherwise. It's something he's ashamed of and he doesn't really like to talk about it, though it would be healthier for him if he did. Remarkably, he manages to get the best sleep curled up beside Itachi or Kakashi.

Living Quarters HC: Depending on what age/AU or segment of life Tenzō is in a role play, he either lives in the barracks of Anbu, an apartment, house, or treehouse. To which he has furnished himself with typical items using his Mokuton. He doesn't have much in the ways of decorations or chachkies, what little he does have are things that were given to him by his teammates or by the very few friends that he makes when he's older. Drawings of Sharingan landscapes that Tenzō received from Itachi for his birthday, pictures of Team Ro [and Team 7 after he starts training them], and maybe one or two tapestries of the forest and jungle [mostly for his Ninneko to enjoy]. He has various cat toys around his place at all times, as well as indoor plants, small trees, and flowers. No matter where he is living his place is always clean, always organized, and maintained. When he moves into a house he paints his walls a dark forest green because he loves that color, it's wick, it reminds him of the place he feels the most at peace, the woods.

Quirks/Hobbies: This can be found in the last post I made for these ask HCs. 😅

Cooking HC: Tenzō never learned how to cook until Kakashi pulled him from Root, where every meal was provided to him and tasted bland. He had always been taught that food was just an essential part of maintaining and sustaining bodily functions. He never knew that you could enjoy the taste of food before, so when he tries something new he gets excited. It's become a habit for him to always try new things, and he's found that he doesn't particularly like oily or overly salty foods, but on a rare occasion he'll indulge in them. He enjoys sweets to a degree, mostly chocolate based though and he loves walnuts. After Kakashi teaches him how to cook, he's been an unstoppable force of collecting new recipes to make and try out new foods. Though in Anbu, it's hard to find the time to cook but he still tries his damndest.

Likes/Dislikes HC: Tenzō loves the smell of pretrichor, especially on hot summer days. He likes being out in the forest/jungle/woods, anywhere there are plants, trees, and flowers, he spends a lot of his free time out in nature with his Ninneko. He also enjoys pleasant surprises, it's not often he can be caught off guard. Another thing he likes is being huddled up around the fire close to someone on a cold day. In fact he loves to be touched in general, hugs, holding hands, being leaned against; his only issue is he doesn't ask for any of those things or initiate very often because he's afraid of rejection and the beating he got trying to hold Danzo's hand once as a child. His dislikes are when someone speaks ill about his friends and teammates, and he'll gladly put up a argument or fight about it. He doesn't enjoy messes, so he often cleans any mess he sees because it bothers him. Another thing he doesn't like is when he's in the spotlight or receiving too many compliments. He doesn't know how to react, but that is mostly because he has a low self-esteem or thinks that he's undeserving; unless the compliments and praise are coming from someone he trusts and admires.

☠ - angry/violent headcanon ☆ - happy headcanon (break my heart and then mend it please ❤️)

Tenzō doesn't get angry very often, frustrated and annoyed maybe. That being said... I do have a headcanon for him of having a fractured sense of self [Dissociative Identity Disorder]. If his anger becomes too much for his psyche to handle, his mind begins to slip into one of his other two personalities, Cat or Kinoe. It's a headcanon I don't use often, but with all of the traumatic events that happened in Tenzō's life it's hard to imagine that he doesn't have at least some mental health issues.

I usually denote his mind slipping by changing the names that I use for him while writing a scene for it. So when Tenzō slips into Kinoe's personality he is lethal, apathetic, cold, calculating, and downright murderous. It was his personality that was once all consuming when he was on Root missions. As Kinoe, he no longer feels anger because his anger is too traumatic for him to deal with so his mind copes by taking away all of his feelings.

Cat on the other hand, Tenzō makes himself slip into this personality on purpose to fulfill his duties as a member of Anbu. This personality only takes away half of his feelings, making it the most rational personality he has. It is also the one he experiences a majority of in his Anbu years. Altough he is aware of when he needs to shut it off, though sometimes it can be difficult to pull himself out of it. Especially since he doesn't want to dwell on the horrible things he's done for the sake of the village.

Eventually as Tenzō gets older [around age 23 or 24], he seeks out treatment for his mental disturbances and disorders. Finally he begins the difficult task of integrating his personalities to become unified into a whole so he no longer has these painful episodes.

As for a happy headcanon, Tenzō loves his Ninneko and couldn't imagine his life without them. They've seen him at his worst, at his best, and everything in between. They know when he's depressed, upset, happy, or hormonal. They never judge him, they remain by his side like loyal companions and the leader of the pride is Oso the Ocelot. Oso likes to call Tenzō his cub, or meowster while on a mission.

Tenzō acquired his summons scroll as Kinoe on one of his solo Root missions to Sora-ku at age 6. He was sent to investigate the Uchiha's business dealings within the black market there. However, he was caught by Nekobaa and interrogated. During the interrogation, she realizes he is a tortured soul who only wants to live a life free of his charge.

Nekobaa takes pitty on Kinoe and decided to strike a deal. In exchange for his silence she offers him his life and the Ninneko summoning scroll. Accepting her deal, Kinoe signs the scroll and summons them for the first time right then and there.

When Oso appears he takes one long silent walk around Kinoe before sitting down in front of him, accepting Kinoe as his cub and meowster. Oso has been his trusted companion ever since, though Kinoe had to hide his summons from Danzo upon returning.

Romantic Headcanon:

Tenzō is very much a romantic in the sense that he reads romance novels in order to try and understand what the feeling of love is like.

When he's with someone, he likes to surprise them, most commonly with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Occasionally he will grow flowers around his partner's dwelling when he comes to visit, although not on purpose. The Mokuton likes to do that all on its own whenever he feels strongly about someone.

He also lights a lot of candles with delicate scents in order to achieve a desired mood or aesthetic that he feels will add to his endeavors.

Reading a book while curled up with his partner beside a fire is something he considers to be romantic, so is draping a blanket around them, or laying in bed all day with them given the chance.

Walking through the woods is another one of his personal favorites, as well as watching a sunrise, sunset, or looking up at the moon and stars in the night sky. If you can't tell, he has a thing for nature.

The most romantic thing he can think of is a shared comfortable silence between him and his partner while just listening to the rain and simply holding hands.

His #1 personal favorite however, is leaving notes around for the person he cares about, or writing them love letters to find when he's not around. He's better able to communicate his feelings that way, rather than saying them out loud.

Old Age/Aging Headcanon:

When Tenzō starts to feel his age he often thinks about when he should retire from being a shinobi and what he'll do with all his free time.

The first thing Tenzō does is erect a house outside the village walls on the edge of the woods. He likes the peace and quiet there that you don't get while living inside the village. It's a modest house, nothing too big or extravagant. Just enough for himself, maybe a partner, and his Ninneko summons; he'll adjust his house to accommodate guests though. If he ever does have a family, there are two spare rooms for his own kids, or grandkids.

If he's with someone, he'll try to include them into his plan. Either way, it's not hard for him to figure out. Tenzō knows he likes nature, so his first thought is to become a Aborist, or teach Dendrology. Yet, he likes the animals that live in the forests as well so another thought is becoming a Forest Ranger because he can't get over his feelings to protect something.

When he gets old enough though, he eventually decides to tone down working altogether. Tenzō becomes a helping hand at the Yamanaka flower shop; either growing flowers, or arranging them.

Finally, Tenzō is able to rest in peace.

ok here’s the dealio. there are some assumptions i’m not gonna make about the language situation of the hylics world wrt things like uhhh how many languages are in use, how many people speak a given language and where they are, etc. we’ve seen like two settlements in the games so far. but it’s reasonable to assume that the people of both settlements (i.e. the h1 region and the h2 region) speak the same language, or at least highly mutually intelligible varieties. therefore (and i hate to do this because most of my data will come from h1, but there aren’t any canon place names in h1, so) i will call the variety of language spoken by the characters of h1 and h2 the new muldul dialect of an unnamed language in the current hylics world. (i’ll, uh, workshop that later.)

i really don’t want to account for <viewax> and <disthlarn>; for the former i can’t shake the association with a “view” + “wax” portmanteau, and for the latter i’m not happy about that consonant cluster in the middle. i’ll still try somewhat to make them work, but if i can’t then i think i can figure out excuses to exclude them from the data set.

speaking of exclusions, you might be asking, “hey! where’s [character name] on these lists?” well here’s the rundown

<pongorma> and <dedusmuln> are actually comprised of parts from the h1 place name generator

<wayne> is a real-ass name, of germanic origin, and thus ineligible

similarly, <gibbulus> and <dracula> are latinate as hell

<cineast> is a real word, believe it or not! it means cinephile. what does this have to do with the enemy itself? hell if i know

i’m on the fence about <ectrolan>... afaik it’s not a word in any language itself, but ectro- seems to come from ancient greek? so i’m leaning towards no

i think <decres> will also be excluded, since it’s probably derived from “crescent” or something? and it’s arguably not a canon name?

why exclude words of real origin? ideally i will make a language unrelated to (as in, did not descend from) any current human language; i think that just makes sense. whether you hc that the hylics world is a distant-future earth or a place entirely removed from our universe, it’s clear there is a gulf between our world and the hylics world.

how does it make sense to mix nmd names and real-world names in the game? well, it kinda doesn’t. so play along with me and call it a localizer’s prerogative: the characters of hylics are implicitly speaking in nmd, but the video games provide almost all text “translated” into english* for the benefit of the audience.

(*do the hylics games have official translations into other languages? they don’t, right? ah, but that would be neat...)

anyway. here are my current goals with the nmd conlang. i’d like to create a phonology for nmd, providing a chart of phonemes as well as some info on phonotactics, allophony, and other things, based on the canon data sets. and i’d like to... well, That’s Basically It ! everything beyond that will be firmly in the realm of speculation and headcanons, so whether i do fucking anything with syntax vocabulary etc will be highly dependent on if i feel like making that stuff out of whole cloth. i mean, it’s not out of the question! a lot of interesting cultural features reveal themselves through those things, so maybe it’ll be fun to imagine what the funney clay people’s societies are like. but let’s start with the sound system and see what happens from there

how’s my conlanging cred? honestly, pretty shit! i’ve never made a conlang before, i’m not super interested in conlangs in general, and i only have a working knowledge of linguistics overall. so this project defs isn’t something to take seriously, yeah? let’s just have fun thinking about one way (out of infinite possibilities!) the hylics characters could talk in-universe :)
