The high desert can make for excellent winter walking. However, depending upon the weather, it can be as cold and wintry as anywhere on the PCT. We included "Winter Hiking in the Tehachapis" by Karen 'Whisper' Friedrichs in Crossing Paths. In her end of December walk, she experienced the beauty and isolation of winter hiking in the desert but also the cold, short days. Of course, she wisely delayed the start of her walk to allow a storm to blow through, she took appropriate cold weather gear, and did make the trip with a companion.
Gone are the crowds of April and May . . . as a result she encountered a herd of feral horses and a very different PCT experience.

Draco from Have a Heart Humane Society in Tehachapi, California

Click here for a link to Have a Heart Humane Society's main website.
Step into the world of Draco, a male black and grey tabby cat whose very essence is a blend of night and twilight. Draco is not just a cat; he’s a presence, a personality, a little guy with a heart as vast as the cosmos. He’s embarked on a noble quest to find his forever home—a sanctuary where his playful spirit can soar and his affectionate nature can flourish.
Draco is an artist of amusement, painting joy with every leap and bound. His sleek coat shimmers like a starlit sky, and his agile movements are a dance to the rhythm of life’s most playful tunes. He finds wonder in the whirl of a falling leaf, sees adventure in the corridors of your home, and turns the simplest game into a spectacle of delight.
But Draco’s allure goes beyond his entertainment prowess. He’s a companion who will share your quiet moments, a confidant who will listen to the whispers of your heart, and a friend who will stand by you through thick and thin. He’ll be the shadow at your feet, the warmth at your side, and the gentle purr that lulls you into tranquility.
If you’re ready to open your life to a creature of magic and mirth, consider Draco. In return for a corner in your home, he offers a lifetime of companionship, laughter, and love. Let Draco enchant your days, enrich your nights, and become the cherished guardian of your happiness. He’s not just looking for a home; he’s looking for a heart to connect with—yours.

Almost High Noon at Woodford by Greg Brown Via Flickr: When I went on railfanning trips with my friend Mike Devlin, he tended to shoot throughout the day. Sometimes that meant we caught great subject matter in some uninspiring midday lighting. As we were returning from our trip to Arizona in July 1988, we spent a full day on Tehachapi. Since we were railfans from Southern Oregon, we rarely saw General Electric power on our home turf. Even though it was still fairly early in the afternoon, we were elated to catch this westbound Santa Fe drag with four big GEs and an EMD kicker. In this image, the train is hitting the east switch of Woodford siding. We would chase this one all the way down the hill to Caliente.

Where the elk and the muleys roam
While in California around the start of the new year, Sharon and I were out for a stroll in the Tehachapi Mountains with our daughter-in-law's parents - Chris and Satsuki - when we met this handsome mule deer and his harem.
The area we hiked is not particularly remote and yet deer, elk and an occasional bear wander through the subdivision as freely as the human residents.
In fact, Satsuki's wildlife photos, taken from her back door, played a roll in convincing me to get a real camera.
For this shot, I had only my cell phone camera.

I got real lazy about posting but here's an update!
Hey folks it's been a minute. It was extremely hard to post updates while on the trail. I would go to libraries along trail towns to upload photos and try to write out a post since its much easier on a computer ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Well I'm going to try to sum my PCT experience up in the next few posts :D
Last time I left off, I was at around day 30. Doing this almost six months later seems a lil weird lol but I'll try my best. Better late than never!
After Agua Dulce, I cowboy camped a bunch and went FAST. I was doing marathon days (26+ miles) and my pack felt super light by that point. Fast forward a few days, I got to the LA aqueduct, which is a flat and exposed part of the trail spanning about 20 miles.
Well my pals and I got ready for this part at Hikertown, which is a super cute hiker haven with a western town look that provides lodging. I'm going to be very transparent and blunt here lol As many hikers do, here I dropped some acid here and decided to continue on the aqueduct.
Absolutely beautiful here. Maybe it was the acid, but this day still remains my favorite day on the trail! Afterwards, I heard a lot of people didn't like hiking the aqueduct because of the hard pavement and long flat expanse but for me, that day was absolutely gorgeous. I even saw a shooting star hiking at night <3
I could go on about my trip ★ but I'm going to keep it brief!
Okay moving on, here's a gorgeous sunrise I saw in this stretch.
I guess next up is Tehachapi. This is usually the last town hikers hit up before ending up in Kennedy Meadows!
I stayed at the hippie hiker haven if you couldn't tell.
Here's a film pic I took and developed at the hiker haven :)
Ah good times. I also got a foot massage and stocked up on some necessities before heading to Kennedy Meadows. They also had the biggest jar (size of a water cooler tank) of weed free for hikers lol
Oh btw Secret Aardvark was my hot sauce of choice for the trail. Tehachapi is a really cute town and I would love to visit again. For those who read "Wild - Cheryl Strayed" this is also where she started her hike on the PCT.
Anyways I'm going to try to get this blog caught up soon and post whatever shenanigans I'm up to in the future. Next up - Kennedy Meadows

My ✨ post-apocalyptic Lesbian Cowgirl Mailman choose-your-own adventure✨ has just updated! Read it here for free on my Patreon and vote in the poll! Here is a guide to get you started, the summaries of each part of the story thus far, the complete collected text, and FAQ, all in one place. There is also a discord where Pony Express readers from all across god's green internet can gather, here!
✨Read the update for free on my patreon & vote on what happens next! ✨Excerpt below the cut.
When her vision cleared, she could see that a whole group of people had gathered around the infirmary door: Holliday, all of the divers, Mrs. Kikkawa, Kanon’s wife with her baby in a sling against her chest, Solitude, and Artie. Everyone looked so relieved to see her, but an air of palpable anxiety still hung around them. Mrs. Kikkawa laid her hand over her eyes, hung her head, and started to cry. Sol made the sign of the star and brought their hands together in prayer.
For a moment, Lou couldn’t understand why. Why would any of them care what happened to her? She was a stranger to them. Then, she remembered how much loss they’d all experienced, and so recently, too. It seemed that, in recent days, so many of their loved ones had gone into the infirmary and not come back out alive. Sumie’s side of the family had lost, at least, their mother, oldest brother, and baby sister from the same illness. Of course they’d been feeling anxious. They’d been hounded by death. They didn’t need any more of it. The only person who didn’t have their eyes trained on her was Artie, who looked out, over and past her, but close enough that nobody but Lou would notice she wasn’t looking at her. She sat close to Tsuneko on a short stone wall that bordered the garden adjacent to the infirmary. She looked right over Lou’s head, like she wasn’t even there, her expression neutral, but when Tsuneko looked back at her to whisper something Lou couldn’t hear, she smiled broadly at her. She was glowing. Her skin looked beautiful and all her scratches were almost faded. The dark circles under her eyes had lightened considerably. Like in Lou’s dream, the scabs that had been splitting her lips had healed. She didn’t even look sickly anymore. Someone had either cut her hair or lent her a buzzer because she had gotten her sides shaved back down to near-skin. The length of her hair was curly and charmingly messy; it was clear she’d been swimming. Everybody thought Lou was going to die and Artie was spending her days swimming in the ocean and hanging out with a beautiful girl. Lou felt the sting of betrayal like a thorn pressed into the flesh above her heart. She actually felt it. It hurt. Artie once again had on a little makeup and wore more jewelry than she ever had on the trail. Worst of all, she was beaming. She was so beautiful and so happy there, in the light of Tsuneko’s attention. Lou couldn’t stand to look at her but couldn’t manage to look away, either.
