"Invite me" for the ask game! :)
💖 Thank you for the Ask!! 💖
Alright, so trying to stick with canon only interactions for another one. Going with Teddy and Harold for this. Also posted on Ao3 if its preferred for reading:
Playing the Long Game
Fandom: The Stand
Characters: Harold Lauder and Teddy Weizak
Words: 859
(Drabble Prompts - Original Post)
"Hawk! Hey!”
Harold stopped mid step, but hesitated turning around. Unexpected interactions always threw him for a loop, and Teddy was no exception. Despite his playful nature, Harold was sure the man had to have something going on behind it all. He had to. They all did. Humanity. Nasty little tendencies behind the veneer. Some just took longer to reveal themselves.
Footsteps could be heard behind him. One last attempt was made to fix his expression, adjust his mask as it were, but he had already spent too much time in his head. Before he could turn, he felt the grip on his back. The light shake that rippled through his body. The laughing echoing in his ear as Teddy’s arm rested across his shoulders in a half hug. Little choice was left in the matter, and Harold reluctantly followed in step as Teddy continued to walk forward, oblivious to any resistance.
"Couple of us are going down to the dorms. Use the generator to set up a movie night. Whaddya say?"
"Oh, that's… I'm not sure—"
"C'mon, everybody needs a little break here and there!"
But that’s what Teddy failed to realize; this wasn't a break. Not to him. What Teddy was proposing was entering a social battle that required constant vigilance. Anticipate the moves, blend into the background when possible, and strike only with a sure bet. Practiced movements and rehearsed repertoire. Break? Exhausting is what it was, and Harold certainly didn't have the energy to put up a front for that long. Not after a full day of cleanup.
The thought of the daily activities only ushered in a wave of fresh memories. Sensory recall he wished he could will away. Smells that would threaten to upheave anything he managed to put down. Decomposition. It lingered in his nostrils and he could almost taste it. That’s all that was there for him. Death. Disgust…
All things he would put up with to position himself where he needed to. A place to get the most leverage when the time came.
But now… This?
"I don't know, Teddy. After today, I think I just need some time to clear my head."
"And what better way to do that than a little mindless entertainment, yeah? Shut down your brain and enjoy."
"Not sure that's the movie doing that."
Along with the comment, a slight incline of his head was made towards the joint tucked behind Teddy's ear to highlight his implication. As far as vices go, he could think of worse, but it served as perfect ammunition for a shot or two when needed. To break the tension. As a diversion.
Teddy, however, was undeterred. In fact, the jab only served to spur him on more. A twinkle picked up in his eyes as his head cocked to the side, smile bursting from ear to ear. Joy continued to course through him, reaching his limbs as he pointed Harold’s way.
"Ah, got me there!”
Another flash of enjoyment waved across his features before he fell back into his pitch. “When in Rome, am I right? But seriously, you’re tellin’ me you just want to go back to a dark house in the quiet and…”
Trying to think of the possibilities had already stumped him, and his face crinkled as he contemplated the right option. But while his thoughts had stalled, Harold found the pause began to slowly kill him inside. Building up until he couldn’t take it any longer.
“What? There’s plenty of things. Read. Write.”
“That’s clearing your head? Sounds like fuckin’ work, man.”
“Some of us enjoy that type of thing. You know, the ones that didn’t smoke away our brain cells.”
As the words came out, Harold stiffened. That had been too far. Too familiar. Was retaliation to follow?
But once again, his poking was answered with a goofy smile and a pleasant laugh. One that Harold could find himself adopting. One that now seemed to come naturally. A genuine smile. And a genuine laugh.
For once, interaction wasn’t forced. It had no agenda and it flowed freely.
It was accepted.
“Yeah, yeah. Duly noted. But even those types can still sit back and appreciate the wonder that is Keanu Reeves' career. How’d he get there? Did he know? Mysteries of the universe that can only be answered with another viewing of John Wick. Are you in?”
Before he even knew what he was doing, his head began to nod. Did he just agree to this? What was he doing?
“Yes! Knew I could count on you! I’m swinging by the station to get a few snacks, wanna help haul?”
And as he followed Teddy around the bend, the first turn straying from his path home, he contemplated his choice. Doing the hard tasks, the dirty work, that was a part of the long game, but he still needed visibility. If he chose the right moves, things like this could provide opportunities to do just that.
The ad hoc had their time now, but people were going to know Harold Lauder. Every dog would have his day.
Maybe there were worse ways to pass the time.
#Mouse is back on her nonsense#the stand 2020#harold lauder#teddy weizak#thank you again for the ask!!

Find the Word tag game:
Tagged by @mrsmungus (thank you for including me!)
My words were: Rain, Chase, Movie, Skin, and Animal
I just started the search in my current chapter of 'Just Keep Diving Down' and went backwards to find them. If you told me I would have to go back to Chapter 10 just to find an instant of 'chase', I would have called bullshit. Seems fitting that it's in reference to drinking too. Ah well... At least I didn't have to go back into 'Spiral'.
Absolute zero-pressure tagging: @asirensrage, @chickensarentcheap, @themaradaniels, @starryeyes2000, @anniesocsandgeneralstore and OPEN TAG for anybody who wants to join in - just '@' me.
Your words: hushed, cried, screamed, laughed, shuddered (emotion edition, I guess)
My Answers:
Rain: (Chapter 32)
Once more she squeezed down on the creature, while others like it drifted up into the air from where they previously stood. Floating above the ruins. Fighting against the invisible grasp keeping them there. Another trickle of blood wove down her arm, and as the slick warmth hit her elbow, she released her grasp, allowing this one to rise with the others.
And there, they hovered. Fighting for breath above the village they damned. Over the people they hurt. People they killed. Lives they destroyed.
Like his.
Like hers.
Screeching echoed out across the night, cries that were silenced only by the caller's departure from this world. Bodies stretched thin by an unseen force until they burst apart, raining blood and fur and feathers down upon the village remains below. Bloody scraps of cloth, and whatever miscellaneous articles had been kept in their possession, fell to the earth. And as the last drop of red struck against the beaten path, she fell to her knees. Crumbling apart with the pain and exhaustion. Grief.
Again time lost its meaning. All concept of it left her as she sat in the mix of dirt and blood, letting her senses be lost to the void.
Chase (Chapter 10)
"You really lost your shit on that thing."
"I did, didn't I?" She could see his confidence building back up, and she aimed to stoke the fire.
"No the fuck you don't!" His words thrown back at him as she acted out the moment in an exaggerated manner. "Good goddamn, sir…” Her antics seemed to loosen him up, and she continued in the same manner. “Scrappy. I approve.” She sent a wink before she downed another glass of burning liquid. “Thanks for the backup, by the way."
The effects of the drinks and change in tone were starting to show on Lloyd, and his hesitance was now almost non-existent. His actions followed suit, and he tipped his glass to her, before gulping down the drink. "Couldn't very well let you get your ass jumped, could I?"
She cocked another eyebrow. "Yeah, you could." It was the first serious note she had used since they left the hospital, and she didn't like how it sat with her. An involuntary shudder hit her spine, and she quickly chased it with her second shot, glasses refilled shortly after.
Movie: (Chapter 29)
Vampires. They were hunting vampires now. Vampires and unknown monsters, all running about their world from portals to other dimensions. His head spun at the thought. When did he become a character in one of his movies? The thought made him uncomfortable, and he shoved his hands in his coat pockets.
Warnings were given, loud and clear: monsters were coming. But outside of that, Steph had no solid knowledge of how to deal with them. Only their existence was known to her. So they prepared in the only way they knew how. Using the only knowledge available to them. Fiction.
And that’s how, in some sick twist of fate, Teddy Weizak had become an expert consultant.
Who knew useless movie knowledge would suddenly become so valuable?
Skin: (Chapter 33)
After a short distance, Celia came to a stop, stepping aside with a showy display to reveal a figure. Tied to the base of a tree in thick vines was one of their attackers. Most likely a lookout, remaining far enough outside of Haven to avoid Hayden's pull. Brandishing a cracked beak, no doubt from this encounter, its raven head tilted. Similar movements to the animal itself, but his human appearance remained still behind the restraints.
Pacing around the tree, keeping it under scrutiny, Gwen noted that it had not said a word. Thinking back, she realized, none of them had ever said a word. Could they? Maybe they couldn't.
No matter. There were other ways.
Moving to kneel in front of the creature, her hand went out to its neck, fingers buried beneath its feathers, and scraped at the bare skin underneath. Red stained her fingertips as she drew them back, observing the color, consistency, texture, noting the normalcy before sucking it off. The taste left much to be desired.
Animal: (Chapter 34)
Hayden knew she was antagonizing. Rayna wanted her to lose herself in blind rage, become reckless; she would be falling into a strategy that was regularly employed here. She knew this, yet it was still so effective. Just hearing his name come from her lips caused her breath to become ragged and forced. Emotion was bubbling over inside of her, and she was fighting to hold it back. Truthfully, she didn't want to. Not after everything. But she knew the right time would present itself, and she’d wait for it as long as she could.
"Yes. Well, death does have a way of putting everything in perspective doesn't it. Watching all of humanity fall in a bloody demise. And not just me and mine either. Everybody. Monstrosities like your new cohorts destroying everything that we are, everything we could be. Simply wiped out. How could you expect me to not make a move against that?"
"How did everybody else die down there, Rayna?"
The unexpected turn gave her pause. A question aimed to put her on defense, instead of allowing her to poke until she broke and lashed out like a wounded animal. Instead of pushing her until a fatal flaw was made in the haste. Well, fuck her; Hayden didn't intend to follow any script. Directing the narrative, as Glen would say. The thought caused another wave of red wash over her, and she dove into her own verbal attack.
"Tell me, what happened when you found it? How’d they die, Rayna?"
#i still cant believe#it took me that long#to find chase#seriously girl - what are we doing...#tw blood

Note
I think The Stand 2020 has some pacing issues also. I'm not happy with some of the character changes but others are really good. Stu Redman, Randall Flagg, Tom Cullen, Julie Lawry, Dayna Jurge& Teddy Weizak are all improvements or as good as they are in book or '94 version. Fanny is a bit more brash. Herold should be a slower decent into the darkside. Glen is ok. Lloyd is more a reluctant follower because Flag saved him. Although current Lloyd is fun to watch, I'm not in love with the changes.
I like Owen Teague in the role of Harold, but he really did just go straight into the deep end, didn't he? I chalk that up to pacing.

How The Stand Updates Randall Flagg’s New Vegas
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains spoilers for episode 5 of The Stand.
In “Fear and Loathing in New Vegas,” the fifth entry in CBS All Access’ nine-part adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, we get to spend a significant amount of time in Las Vegas, where the demonic Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) has established his sinister kingdom.
There are other important plot developments in the course of the episode, such as the aftermath of Teddy Weizak’s (Eion Bailey) murder at the hands of Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) — which they made to look like a suicide — as they construct their destructive plans; Frannie’s (Odessa Young) growing suspicions about Harold and her own plan to do something about it; and the abrupt departure of Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) as she seeks guidance from God.
But a good amount of time is spent in Flagg’s new version of Sin City, which is different from that of King’s book. While the Vegas in the novel (and the 1994 miniseries) was a strict authoritarian state, with things like the use of drugs punishable by crucifixion, the Nevada stronghold in the new version is still tightly run by Flagg but with his followers allowed to indulge in all the drugs, sex and general depravity they want.
“It’s funny, the ‘no drugs in Vegas thing’ never made a lot of sense to us,” says showrunner Ben Cavell. “I mean, just from Flagg’s general ethos, it never made a lot of sense to us. And we wanted to really dig in on what somebody like Flagg is genuinely offering. It was very important to us that Flagg never be evil with a capital E. That he really seem, at least initially, like a viable alternative to Mother Abigail.”
Cavell says that making Flagg palatable at least in some fashion would not just explain why so many people could be persuaded to join him, but would also make him a real-world metaphor. “He claims to have a real handle on what’s going on, and what it’s all for, and what it all means that we’ve had to live through all this horror,” Cavell explains. “I think that would be very attractive. We wanted to use Flagg to get at some of the genuine appeal of these charismatic, authoritarian strongmen that have been on the ascendancy in all sorts of places around the world, and what those guys might be offering.”
Robert Falconoer/CBS
He continues, “So it was very important to us that yes, our Vegas is more permissive in a lot of ways than the Vegas in the book. But it was also important to us to show that it functions, as does the Vegas in the book, and that in some ways it gets back up and running more quickly even than Boulder.”
That’s one thing that the show’s version of Flagg’s tiny empire shares with the book: the Vegas community gets Hoover Dam generating power again and lighting up the casinos even as Boulder struggles to switch the electricity back on. “That’s all because that’s how Flagg has it organized,” says Cavell, although watching all the debauchery taking place in the town in “Fear and Loathing in New Vegas” makes us wonder how Flagg’s followers have the stamina and sobriety to get the work done.
Of course, we see Vegas in this episode through the eyes of Dayna Jurgens (Natalie Martinez), one of the Boulder Free Zone’s spies sent to find out exactly what Flagg is up to. The others are the ill-fated Judge Farris (Gabrielle Rose) and the developmentally disabled Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke).
The Judge never makes it to Vegas alive, while Dayna is eventually found out after getting close to Flagg’s right-hand man Lloyd Henreid (Nat Wolff). She kills herself rather than let Flagg pull the identity of the third spy — whom Flagg can’t “see” — from her mind, but not before warning Tom to escape. Whether Tom heeds that warning or not will have enormous consequences later…but that’s yet to come.
