🎯 Samsara accuses rival Motive of stealing trade secrets in new lawsuit
On November 13, Internet-of-Things company Samsara (IOT.N) intensified its legal conflict with competitor Motive Technologies by filing a new lawsuit in California state court. The suit accuses Motive and its CEO, Shoaib Makani, of leading a "massive, years-long scheme" involving the theft of trade secrets tied to Samsara's business. According to the complaint, Motive allegedly sought confidential information from former Samsara employees to develop competing dashcams and fleet management technology, which purportedly allowed Motive to bypass "years of research and development."
Earlier this year, Samsara filed separate lawsuits against Motive in Delaware federal court and with the U.S. International Trade Commission, alleging that Motive infringed on its patents. In response, Motive filed its own lawsuit in California, accusing Samsara of imitating its technology. In a statement, Motive described Samsara's latest lawsuit as "another attempt to distract from the fact that Motive delivers superior AI technology and value to customers." The company also pointed to an ITC official's recent public finding on Tuesday, indicating that Samsara's case was unlikely to succeed.
In a statement, Samsara affirmed its commitment to "protecting our company's innovation and the hard work of our dedicated employees." Headquartered in San Francisco, Samsara, a provider of dashcams and fleet management solutions, went public in 2021 with support from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Its competitor, Motive, also based in San Francisco, rebranded from KeepTruckin in 2022. Samsara stated that through its ITC case, it discovered that Motive possessed documents detailing Samsara's confidential business strategies and other proprietary information. The new lawsuit claims the ITC case also unveiled directives from Motive’s CEO, Shoaib Makani, instructing employees to "interview former Samsara employees they had hired, gather as much information on Samsara's operations, products, and features as possible," and "use that information to support Motive's product sales."
Samsara is seeking an unspecified amount in monetary damages and court orders to prevent Motive from utilizing its trade secrets improperly. The case, titled Samsara Inc. v. Motive Technologies Inc., is filed in the Superior Court of California, San Francisco County. Representing Samsara are attorneys Josh Krevitt, Stuart Rosenberg, Ilissa Samplin, Brian Rosenthal, and Kate Dominguez from Gibson Dunn & Crutcher. Attorney information for Motive has not yet been disclosed.
